Abstract:
Integrated algae pond systems are a derivation of the Oswald designed advanced integrated wastewater ponding system, and combine the use of anaerobic and aerobic bioprocesses to effect wastewater treatment. Integrated algae pond system technology was introduced to South Africa in 1996 and a pilot plant was designed and commissioned at the Belmont Valley wastewater treatment works in Grahamstown. Previous studies showed that this system delivered a final effluent superior to most pond systems deployed in South Africa but that it was unable to meet the general standard for nutrient removal and e

Anaerobic treatment has historically been considered unsuitable for the treatment of domestic wastewaters. The work presented in this thesis focuses on the incorporation of membranes into the anaerobic bioreactor to uncouple solid retention time and hydraulic retention time. However, the exposure of membranes to anaerobic biomass comes with its own inherent problems namely fouling. The major concerns with effluent reuse are primarily its impact on human health and environmental risk. As a result, effluent reuse should

ABSTRACT PERFORMANCE OF A WASTEWATER TREATMENT POND SYSTEM WITH MICROFILTRATION Eric Martin The Woodlands Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWWTP) treats wastewater from the Woodlands housing community near Nipomo, California. The treated effluent is recycled for irrigation of a golf course within the community. The treatment facility consists of three facultative ponds in series followed by a microfiltration system and chlorine disinfection. Microfiltration of wastewater pond effluent is a fairly new, and potentially challenging, application of microfiltration. This thesis describes the operatin

Dala Vatten AB has been operating two municipal wastewater treatment plant namely Gagnef wastewater treatment plant and Tällberg wastewater treatment plant since 1970’s and 1950’s respectively in Dalarna, middle of Sweden. These both traditional treatment plants have been updated with continuous and intermittent aerated biological treatment facilities: Moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) in 2012 and 2007 respectively. Recently, more detailed process performance and evaluation of both plants is required focusing on energy consumption. The objective of this master thesis is thus to investigate the

As one of the largest and most productive estuaries in the United States, the Chesapeake Bay is a great economic, ecological, and cultural asset to the Mid-Atlantic region. Excess nitrogen and phosphorus discharge, however, has contributed to reduced levels of dissolved oxygen in various locations throughout the Bay. In 2010, the EPA developed a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for the entire watershed that established nutrient reduction targets to achieve Bay water quality objectives. The TMDL required states in the Chesapeake Bay watershed to create implementation plans to meet nutrient redu
