Abstract:
The rapid rise in the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) mandates the discovery of novel tuberculosis (TB) drugs. Mur enzymes, which are identified as essential proteins in Mtb and catalyze the cytoplasmic steps in the peptidoglycan biosynthetic pathway, are considered potential drug targets. However, none of the clinical drugs have yet been developed against these enzymes. Hence, the aim of this study was to identify novel inhibitors of Mur enzymes in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We screened an antitubercular compound library of 684 compounds, using MurB and MurE enzymes of the Mtb Mur pathway as drug targets. For experimental validation, the top hits obtained on in silico screening were screened in vitro, using Mtb Mur enzyme-specific assays. In all, seven compounds were found to show greater than 50% inhibition, with the highest inhibition observed at 77%, and the IC50 for these compounds was found to be in the range of 28–50 μM. Compound 5175112 showed the lowest IC50 (28.69 ± 1.17 μM), and on the basis of (1) the binding affinity, (2) the stability of interaction noted on molecular dynamics simulation, and (3) an in vitro assay, MurE appeared to be its target enzyme. We believe that the overall strategy followed in this study and the results obtained are a good starting point for developing Mur enzyme-specific Mtb inhibitors.

Abstract:
The Diplotaxis muralis male sterility inducing cytoplasm (mur cytoplasm) and its maintainer genes were transferred from the winter rapeseed male sterile line Mangun mur CMS A-line and the mur CMS maintainer line Mangun mur CMS B-line, respectively, into summer rape lines genetically related to the open-pollinated population cultivars Regent and Karat using standard cross, backcross and test cross breeding procedures. Three genetically identical summer rape mur CMS A-line and B-line pairs, Karat I A-line and B-line, Karat II A-line and B-line and Regent A-line and B line were developed. Flower morphology studies revealed that the mur CMS A-lines had anthers displaying a complete absence of pollen and floral morphology modifications similar to that seen for other CMS systems in summer rape. Seedling emergence, days to first flower, days to maturity, and height of the vernalized mur CMS Mangun A-line and B-line pair and the summer rape mur CMS A-line and B-line pairs were similar among treatments and equal for A-line and B-line pair comparisons within cultivars for plants grown in the greenhouse. There was no evidence of biological benefits or costs associated with the mur cytoplasm. The male sterility for the vernalized Mangun mur CMS A-line and the summer rape mur CMS A-lines was stable at temperatures up to 30/24EC. Abstract:
The manganese uptake regulator Mur of Rhizobium leguminosarum is a close homologue of the global iron regulatory protein Fur. Mur represses the sitABCD operon, which encodes a Mn2+ transport system, specifically in response to Mn2+ but not Fe2+. In previous work the authors mapped the 5′ ends of two sit operon transcripts, termed TS1 and TS2, which were co-ordinately regulated by Mn2+-Mur, but this paper now shows that only TS1 is a primary transcript. DNase I protection analyses showed that purified Mur bound, with similar affinity, to two sites in the regulatory region of sitABCD, but only when Mn2+ was present in the reaction buffer. These Mn2+-Mur-binding sites, termed MRS1 and MRS2 (Mur-responsive sequence), were closely related in sequence to each other and were separated by 16 bp, spanning the transcription initiation site TS1. The extent of the protected DNA was 34 and 31 bp for MRS1 and MRS2, respectively, which is in accord with other members of the Fur family. The DNA sequences recognized by Mn2+-Mur are wholly different from conventional Fur boxes, but some similarities to a recognition sequence for the Fur regulator from Bradyrhizobium japonicum were noted. Transcription analysis of the R. leguminosarum mur gene showed its expression to be independent of Mn2+-Mur. Thus, Mur is a sequence-specific DNA-binding protein that responds in vitro to manganese, and thus can occlude RNA polymerase access to the sitABCD promoter. Moreover, Mur recognizes a DNA sequence atypical for the Fur superfamily and, like Fur from B. japonicum, defines a new subclass of Fur-like transcriptional regulators.

In June 2002, the Israeli government decided to build a wall to protect its citizens from "Palestinian terrorism". The Israeli government violates the international law by building most of the wall in the Palestinian occupied territories. From the Palestinian point of view, the wall is a "Machiavellian way" to create new facts on the ground, and to impose a unilateral solution. The Palestinian insists that the wall is an "expansionist policy" of fait accompli, and violates their rights to establish their independent state on their own land. The United Nations, the International Court of Justice, and the International Community call on the Israeli authorities to immediately dismantle the sections already built inside the occupied territories and halt the construction of the wall inside the Green line

Abstract:
Today, display walls driven by PC clusters are an efficient solution to increase the size and resolution of display surfaces. Taking advantage of such environments requires adapted softwares, able to aggregate efficiently the available resources. Most research efforts were related to the development of solutions dedicated for 3D applications. Porting 2D applications and windowing environments on display wall did not received such focus. The availability of such applications is however essential to ensure a natural continuity from the user's personal computer to the collaborative workspace of display walls. This work presents a proxy server solution based on the X protocol. It relies on a model of graphics primitive distribution. The approach proposed takes advantage of the features offered by the X server, like window clipping, to minimize the proxy work load. We developed two methods. The first one relies on a coordinate transformation at the proxy level. The second one uses pseudo root windows to report the coordinate transform towards the rendering servers. Our solution relies on a clear code and thus an easy to maintan code. A performance comparison between DMX, an alternative X Windows proxy solution, shows the significant performance gains provided by our approach

Abstract:
Nearly twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, many walls continue to divide countries and their populations, while others are being built and strengthened, why? The answer to this question calls for the definition of the nature of these walls: Firstly, the walls are erected in order to separate communities (in Northern Ireland, in the occupied Palestinian territories, in Iraq). The walls also define boundaries between two worlds (the wall between the United States of walls also appears as the extension and the consequence of imperfect peace treaties (wall separating Greek and Turkish Cypriots, the one aiming to divide the two Koreas). It can also be analysed as the paradoxical result of the globalization that is said however to open… The list is not exhaustive. How do these walls fit in with the international law? Insofar as these walls imply spatial closure, thus exclusion, do they not hinder the liberty of movement of goods and people, established by the international conventions? As they contribute to demographic and geographic changes, or even topographical changes of occupied areas (Iraq, Palestine), do these walls not violate the right of people to self-determination affirmed by the resolutions of the United Nations? Are they not in the limit a theatrical demonstration of sovereignty in decline? These questions define the content and scope of our problem

Abstract:

Osteoporotic fractures always bring morbidity to patients and in the proximal femur, also mortality. International studies have sought to examine the relationship between bone mineral density and hip fractures; however, Brazil and Latin America still need more data. This study aims to describe the bone quality of patients who suffered fractures of the proximal femur treated at a hospital in southern Brazil and make a comparative analysis according to gender, BMI and the different types of fractures. Patients and Methods: We analyzed in a transversal study 118 patients with proximal femur fractures, 56 with femoral neck fractures and 62 with trochanteric fractures. Of these, 16 were male and 102 female. Femoral neck fractures were classified according to the classification of Garden and later divided into Stable (Garden I and II) and Unstable (Garden III and IV). The trochanteric fractures were classified according to AO-OTA and divided into Stable (31A1 up to 31A2.1) and Unstable (31A2.2 up to 31A3.3). Results: Fractures classified as Stable showed T-score values lower than those unstable for all measurement locations in the proximal femur. Statistical significance was detected in the difference between the measurements obtained in the trochanteric region and the spine (p = 0.042 and p = 0.024 respectively) when comparing unstable trochanteric and femoral neck factures. Trochanteric fractures tend to occur in patients above 80 years old while cervical fractures are more frequent above 70 years old. Patients with trochanteric fractures had lower BMI than those with fractures of the femoral neck (p = 0.022). Conclusion: The trochanteric fractures tend to occur in older patients and are associated with the BMI lower than those patients with femoral neck fractures. Unstable fractures have higher bone mineral loss in the trochanteric region, which may indicate greater loss in this region with advancing age, favoring the occurrence of trochanteric fractures.

Abstract:
In the 21st century our image of a globalized world seems a priori paradoxical to the heavy increase in barriers designed to create or maintain divisions. We will focus on the artistic interpretation resulting from this paradox in the context of geopolitics, history and social situation. How and why the Wall should make think the artists? In a first step, historical development broadly reports the features and contexts of our phenomenal object. Then, effective phenomenology mainly refers to the Berlin Wall; this for an eventual metaphor to the two others studied objects-walls: the one located in Israel and Palestine, the other located between Mexico and the United States. Understanding of the Real is qualified by the sovereignty of States, understanding of the Symbolic via territory and cultural identity, and the realm of the Imaginary by the relationship with others and with oneself. The confrontation to the border (limologie) related to the strategy of the wall (teichos), would reveal an imbalance of principles of universality. Eventually, globalization as an exchange of interests is the one that would promote the existence of the object-wall; and a hyperreal perception of the object would be more the result from artists foreign to the phenomenon

Abstract:

Abstract:
The reactor coolant system (RCS) pressure transients under ATWS for Maanshan PWR with MUR conditions were analyzed in this study. The main concern was to observe whether the peak RCS pressure still maintained within 3200 psig limit (defined by ASME Code Level C service limit criterion under 100% rated power). The Maanshan RETRAN model, which had been developed for PWR transients, was used for ATWS safety analysis and related sensitivity analysis under MUR conditions. In document SECY-83-293, all initializing events were classified as either turbine trip or non-turbine trip events and their ATWS risks were also evaluated according to these two events. Loss of condenser vacuum (LOCV) and Loss of normal feedwater (LONF) ATWS were identified as limiting transients of turbine trip and non-turbine trip events in this study. In order to analyze the RCS pressure variations, a moderator density coefficient (MDC) model was included to observe the influences of moderator temperature and system pressure to the reactor reactivity, and the possibility of the peak RCS pressure reaching its limit. In addition, this report also covers the following sensitivity studies, (1) different MTC settings, and (2) different initial conditions of steam generator outlet pressure. The peak RCS pressure was found to stay within the criterion of 3200 psig even at a conservative MTC setting of −4 pcm/°F. Furthermore, a lower steam generator outlet pressure also resulted in a lower peak RCS pressure.

Abstract:
Abstract: At the same time as the initial development of air conditioning systems for indoor climate control in buildings were occurring in USA, Le Corbusier and Lyon made truly innovative proposals for different projects he was working on in Europe. These served to generate homogenous thermal environments and focused on the combined effect of his mur neutralisant and respiration exacte. The clearest example of their shortcomings is the City of Refuge in Paris (1930-33). Given the technological and economic mistrust towards these proposals, as it was impossible to execute these according to the original plan these were not pursued. CFD simulations carried out by our research team confirm that the mur neutralisant and respiration exacte for the City of Refuge in Paris would have functioned together if they had been executed following the original plans. The main aim of this paper is to confirm the validity of the mur neutralisant as an active thermal system for buildings. Firstly, the results of the tests carried out by the engineers of Saint Gobain are compared to the results of the CFD simulations. Based on the comparison of the results from the physical models tested in Saint Gobain laboratories and CFD energy model simulations, a possible calibration is proposed for CFD which might prompt the establishment of other operation hypotheses. Abstract:
Freshwater ecosystems in mountain areas are considered important water resources and biodiversity hotspots that are highly sensitive to changes in climate. The Alpine region is known to be particularly affected by climate change, including changes in hydrological extremes such as droughts and floods, which are expected to become more frequent and intense. Despite the importance of groundwater as a primary water resource, climate change impacts on groundwater quality, including those resulting from hydrological extremes, have been rarely addressed to date. Moreover, groundwater monitoring is currently focused on physical-chemical indicators, whereas groundwater ecological features such as biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are hardly considered. Against this background, this project addressed the following overarching research question: How do groundwater systems in an alpine and prealpine environment respond to extreme hydrological events in terms of water quantity and chemical quality as well as ecological status? To address this question, the valley of the river Mur from its alpine source area at 2000 m a.s.l. to the Austrian–Slovenian border at 200 m a.s.l. was considered. Thus, the investigation area included alpine and prealpine areas, different type of hydrogeological settings and different human impacts. Existing long-term data was complemented by high-resolution monitoring over time and sampling campaigns addressing wastewater-borne micro-pollutants, microbiological parameters, and groundwater fauna. Our results demonstrate a deterioration of water quality from the alpine source area towards the foreland, corresponding to the more intense agricultural and urban land use in the foreland. The vulnerability of groundwater systems to hydrological extremes is closely related to linkages between water quantity and water quality, which are found to be determined by the groundwater recharge mechanisms and their spatiotemporal dynamics. To achieve a more holistic assessment of groundwater systems, we recommend that their ecosystem nature is taken into account by microbiological indicators that complement existing hydrological and hydrochemical indices. The B-A-(E) index is proposed for this purpose but needs further development by transciplinary research involving local experts and stakeholders to define appropriate reference conditions that enable classifications into meaningful water-quality categories.

Abstract:
Despite some successes, however, there are still barriers for women at universities, which are reflected in the so-called "leaky pipeline", i.e. a decreasing proportion of women the higher their position in the science system. The University of Vienna is also characterised by a pronounced leaky pipeline. The mentoring programme of the University of Vienna - muv - was launched to counteract this development and to support women in entering an academic career. The programme has been continuously evaluated and further developed. This report continues this tradition and provides input for a discussion on the further development of the programme.
