Full textIn June 2002, the Israeli government decided to build a wall to protect its citizens from "Palestinian terrorism". The Israeli government violates the international law by building most of the wall in the Palestinian occupied territories. From the Palestinian point of view, the wall is a "Machiavellian way" to create new facts on the ground, and to impose a unilateral solution. The Palestinian insists that the wall is an "expansionist policy" of fait accompli, and violates their rights to establish their independent state on their own land. The United Nations, the International Court of Justice, and the International Community call on the Israeli authorities to immediately dismantle the sections already built inside the occupied territories and halt the construction of the wall inside the Green line

Full textToday, display walls driven by PC clusters are an efficient solution to increase the size and resolution of display surfaces. Taking advantage of such environments requires adapted softwares, able to aggregate efficiently the available resources. Most research efforts were related to the development of solutions dedicated for 3D applications. Porting 2D applications and windowing environments on display wall did not received such focus. The availability of such applications is however essential to ensure a natural continuity from the user's personal computer to the collaborative workspace of display walls. This work presents a proxy server solution based on the X protocol. It relies on a model of graphics primitive distribution. The approach proposed takes advantage of the features offered by the X server, like window clipping, to minimize the proxy work load. We developed two methods. The first one relies on a coordinate transformation at the proxy level. The second one uses pseudo root windows to report the coordinate transform towards the rendering servers. Our solution relies on a clear code and thus an easy to maintan code. A performance comparison between DMX, an alternative X Windows proxy solution, shows the significant performance gains provided by our approach

Full textNearly twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, many walls continue to divide countries and their populations, while others are being built and strengthened, why? The answer to this question calls for the definition of the nature of these walls: Firstly, the walls are erected in order to separate communities (in Northern Ireland, in the occupied Palestinian territories, in Iraq). The walls also define boundaries between two worlds (the wall between the United States of walls also appears as the extension and the consequence of imperfect peace treaties (wall separating Greek and Turkish Cypriots, the one aiming to divide the two Koreas). It can also be analysed as the paradoxical result of the globalization that is said however to open… The list is not exhaustive. How do these walls fit in with the international law? Insofar as these walls imply spatial closure, thus exclusion, do they not hinder the liberty of movement of goods and people, established by the international conventions? As they contribute to demographic and geographic changes, or even topographical changes of occupied areas (Iraq, Palestine), do these walls not violate the right of people to self-determination affirmed by the resolutions of the United Nations? Are they not in the limit a theatrical demonstration of sovereignty in decline? These questions define the content and scope of our problem

Full textOsteoporotic fractures always bring morbidity to patients and in the proximal femur, also mortality. International studies have sought to examine the relationship between bone mineral density and hip fractures; however, Brazil and Latin America still need more data. This study aims to describe the bone quality of patients who suffered fractures of the proximal femur treated at a hospital in southern Brazil and make a comparative analysis according to gender, BMI and the different types of fractures. Patients and Methods: We analyzed in a transversal study 118 patients with proximal femur fractures, 56 with femoral neck fractures and 62 with trochanteric fractures. Of these, 16 were male and 102 female. Femoral neck fractures were classified according to the classification of Garden and later divided into Stable (Garden I and II) and Unstable (Garden III and IV). The trochanteric fractures were classified according to AO-OTA and divided into Stable (31A1 up to 31A2.1) and Unstable (31A2.2 up to 31A3.3). Results: Fractures classified as Stable showed T-score values lower than those unstable for all measurement locations in the proximal femur. Statistical significance was detected in the difference between the measurements obtained in the trochanteric region and the spine (p = 0.042 and p = 0.024 respectively) when comparing unstable trochanteric and femoral neck factures. Trochanteric fractures tend to occur in patients above 80 years old while cervical fractures are more frequent above 70 years old. Patients with trochanteric fractures had lower BMI than those with fractures of the femoral neck (p = 0.022). Conclusion: The trochanteric fractures tend to occur in older patients and are associated with the BMI lower than those patients with femoral neck fractures. Unstable fractures have higher bone mineral loss in the trochanteric region, which may indicate greater loss in this region with advancing age, favoring the occurrence of trochanteric fractures.

Full textIn the 21st century our image of a globalized world seems a priori paradoxical to the heavy increase in barriers designed to create or maintain divisions. We will focus on the artistic interpretation resulting from this paradox in the context of geopolitics, history and social situation. How and why the Wall should make think the artists? In a first step, historical development broadly reports the features and contexts of our phenomenal object. Then, effective phenomenology mainly refers to the Berlin Wall; this for an eventual metaphor to the two others studied objects-walls: the one located in Israel and Palestine, the other located between Mexico and the United States. Understanding of the Real is qualified by the sovereignty of States, understanding of the Symbolic via territory and cultural identity, and the realm of the Imaginary by the relationship with others and with oneself. The confrontation to the border (limologie) related to the strategy of the wall (teichos), would reveal an imbalance of principles of universality. Eventually, globalization as an exchange of interests is the one that would promote the existence of the object-wall; and a hyperreal perception of the object would be more the result from artists foreign to the phenomenon

Full textAlthough « Street art » is today an inseparable part of the urban landscape, and its artistic recognition is beyond doubt, its apprehension and treatment by law remains problematic and raises many questions. As long as this form of expression meets the criteria of copyright, the work is protected and enjoys the same rights and prerogatives as other more classical works, we shall say, such as paintings of Masters, literary works of the most beautiful feathers of this world... However, when their creator decides to stage his art without consideration for the owner of the medium on which he fits, this protection even if legitimate is called into question. Criminal law and property law, for example, rise up to copyright, and compromises must be found to ease tensions arising from such a practice. Owner or author, do we necessarily have to favour only one?

Full textLast decade, a growing problem of antibiotic resistance has become true worries for public health. Since the golden age of antibiotics, their development contributed to improve new marketing active compounds with large broad structural varieties, especially against mycobacteria, pneumococcal or staphylococcal strains. However, pathogenic bacterial infections, still an urgent public health concern because of bacterial resistance, remove the efficacy of employed antibiotics. Therefore, the development of new structural compounds for new antibiotics is a most potent pathway to improve their biological powerful against multi- and/or resistant bacterial strains. This manuscript describes new nucleosidic analogues obtained by diversity-oriented synthesis (DOS) approach. Thus, new synthetic methodology for carbocyclic nucleosides cyclopentanone moiety was investigated and carba-nucleoside from virtual screening was synthetized. Small library of heterocyclic compounds containing an indole structure was developed. Key reactions was used like 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (CuAAC) allowing to develop a diversity-oriented synthesis approach (DOS). Furthermore, new methodology for pseudo-sugar of carbanucleoside synthesis use an allylic C-H activation cyclization palladium-catalyzed as C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond formation. These molecules have been shown to be active against Mur ligases from Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Full textSince german unification, a "new german question" emerges, because today unified germany has become again the central country on the European continent. The liberation of central european countries and the new economic and political strength of united germany produced much fear in europe. Germany's neighbours harbour much uncertainly regarding its political role in the new europe. The gaol of this thesis is to analyse this new european preoccupation. To this end, it is necessary to study german fereign policy since the fall of the berlin-wall. Two areas are of particular importance. On the one hand, relations between germany and its community partner (part one), and on the other, those with the central and eastern european countries and sx-USSR (part two). More than ever, for germany, belonging to the european union remains of prime importance, dispite increasing contacts with the eastern european states since 1989-1990. Germany consequently provides a link between the two Europes. As chancellor kohl has emphasized, "german unity and the unity of Europe should march side by side"

The present work aims at having an accurate comprehension of the formation of MUR (University ministry renewed) a student movement linked to RCC (Catholic Charismatic renewal) in its strategies of action carried out by the students at the universities. Later, we tried to approach the implications and/or applications of the ideals shared by the members of MUR in the professional life of members who took part in it an that after graduation came to participate in GPP (professional Partition group) The present study aims at evaluating the unfoldings of religious influence of these students in their public action and investigate the dialog between the subjectivity and wider layers of identity of these students , that roam from a supposedly scientific effervescence place (university) to another one that helps the mystic/emotional experimentation( Catholic Charismatic renewal) and share supposedly antagonic ideological values such as reason/ faith/ juvenile ethos.

Full textCities facing overpopulation amid shifting climates will require practicable solutions to meet the biophilic, health, and safety needs of city dwellers. The goal of this thesis is to determine the possibility of having a living wall system which is durable, environmentally sustainable, unlimited by location and building typology, and more affordable than currently available systems. The hypothesis of this thesis is that concrete, due to its durability, cost, and ubiquity, is capable of being used as a growing medium for plant life and is currently the most realistic material choice to significantly extend nature’s reach into the urban milieu. The thesis is multi-disciplinary and combines botany and material science, but architecture is the lens throughwhich the inter-disciplinary work is validated. This architectural lens will influence the trajectory of future system design, e.g., in determining if the system would have the potential of being structural and used for the interiors and exteriors of low, mid, and high-rise buildings. This doctoral thesis would determine the feasibility of concrete living wall systems and if validated provide the foundation for sustainable concrete living wall solutions

Full textFrom 1770 to 1914, wallpaper became the premier decoration in western interiors. Until recently, its study is concentrated on the history of style and little is know about the general context in which it was produced. It is necessary to investigate the circumstances of its creation; the firm, the studio, the factory, and to study its marketing and consumption. By focusing on these aspects we achieve a greater understanding of what is lying beneath its surface and which gives it meaning. During the 18th century wallpaper was still produced for elite markets, about which a good deal is know. By using the archives the King's house, and, the rich archives of N. Dollfus & Co in Mulhouse, it is possible to provide an answer to some of the questions about its context. During the 19th century, the consumption of wallpaper increased with the introduction of mechanization : the study concentrates on products intended for elite markets, such as the "scenics", "decors" etc. Documented in the archives of the Jean Zuber & Co, Rixheim. This study establishes wallpaper firmly as a fundamental element of the culture of the interior at every level of society

Full textThe study concerne the architectual polychromy of le corbusier, realized in the twenties. There is double aim : not only in order to understand the theoritic ground of the architect with regard to others artists of this period but also in order to expand the reflection about the notion of "synthesis of arts", appeared in hinself after the forties. The five buildings chosens are : la maison la roche-jeanneret (1923-25), les quartiers modernes fruges (1924-26), la villa stein-de monzie (1926-28), la villa baizeau (1927-30) and la villa savoye (1928-31). These polychromys are treated in each time as "theoric object" in itself. This approche allow to stand out new articulations in the question of color in architecture

Full textThis PhD thesis aims to understand and analyse the heat exchanges that occur between a building and its environment in the presence of intensive vegetated walls. In this manuscript, a numerical and experimental approach to evaluate the thermal impact of green walls is presented. A platform composed of three identical prototypes (3 thermal mini-laboratories) under real weather conditions has been designed and instrumented. As a first step, two screens permitting a rapid and gradual variation of coverage rate from 10 to 100% were added to the prototypes. Thus, several series of measurements were performed and significant reductions in temperature and heat flow were recorded and interpreted. The primary objective of this experimental approach was to implement an artificial shading and thus controlled. A first model was developed based on the writing of heat exchanges energy balance equations between the wall with variable coverage rate and its climatic environment. This model confronted to the experimental results allowed the validation of the theoreticalapproaches at the level of radiative and convective heat transfer. Secondly, the first model that was developed in this work has been adapted to the case of a "real" occultation by vegetation (Ivy or Virginia creeper) then validated experimentally. It was finally implemented in a dynamic thermal simulation code (TRNSYS), and thus the thermal impact of green walls were evaluated at the real scale of a building. Simulation results in a temperate climate show that the presence of evergreen plants has a negative impact on winter energy demand. Conversely, in summer, the results show that green walls have an interest in limiting overheating. Their presence significantly reduces energy consumption needed to cool the building and improves the indoor thermal comfort

Full textChanges occurred by using iron and steel in architecture in france, from the 19th century onwards, did not concern the structure only. The iron skeleton led the way for light cladding materials : sheet metal, for prefabricated houses which were shipped to colonies, and panes of glass for large urban buildings (railway stations, covered markets, department stores). These two materials contributed to the spreading of the industrial revolution through the city, with the help of hygienist theories (the combined search for air, heat and light), that prevailed until the middle of the 20th century. As the sheet metal and the pane of glass, compared with the masonry wall, rapidly showed their weakness in the case of extreme heat and cold, the thermal control matter is thus emphasised. Technical solutions issued from the experimental field of tropical construction: the metal wall foretold the light panel of the curtain wall, then the principle of double envelope of glass and steel was established. The environmental knowledge that specifies physical exchanges between the building and the city is analysed, as well as the structural knowledge, when designers and builders experimented the wall and the iron frame. Metal and glass buildings are then considered in their urban context, in order to explore the environmental control approaches. These case studies show that hygienist and thermal concerns are predominant in the architectural design during these two centuries ; today, with intelligent control systems, the transparent walls can react to the changing qualities of heat and light outside, and out-perform thick masonry walls

Full textUse of renewable energy is a necessary way to fight global warming and to anticipate scarcity of raw materials. The solar/storage wall used in buildings with lower energy consumption meets this evolution to renewable energy sources. In this thesis, solar energy is stored in a phase charge material (PCM), which provides latent storage. The latent storage is higher than sensible storage in usual building materials. This energy is restored to indoor air, by circulation and heating of inlet air through the wall storage element. In this thesis work, the solar storage wall was developed, based on previous published works dealing with similar systems. An experiment has been carried out with the solar storage integrated in a small wood building with a high insulation. The solar energy recovered by the wall reaches 2 kWh.m-2.day-1 and 1,5 kWh.day-1 was restored to air. In a second experiment, a prototype was developed to be used in controlled laboratory conditions. Special attention was given to PCM temperature measures to analyze the PCM thermal behavior. Two phenomena were observed: (i) liquid phase recovering solid phase, (ii) temperature homogenization in liquid phase. The PCM thermal behavior depends on interactions between three energetic flows: the charge flow (solar energy recovered), the restored flow (energy restored to the inlet air) and a vertical flow created by the liquid phase recovering. Furthermore, a numerical dynamic model for the solar storage wall was developed. It is based on a finite volume approach. This model simulates: (i) the ground effect in a solar wall, (ii) the thermal energy storage and phase changes, and (iii) heat recovery energy to air inlet. Numerical results were compared to experimental values. The model was validated for air temperature for daily cycle defined with a charge period (during sunning) and a continue air heating. The difference between numerical values and experimental values are lower than 0.6°C in mean temperature, and 10% in energy. This difference is lower than measurement uncertainties and energy calculation error margins. So the model is valeted and can be coupled with the dynamic thermal simulation code: TRNSYS

Full textObjective: This study aimed to verify the process of bone repair biomaterials forward the use of Bio-Oss ?, Osteogen ? and Bone Ceramic ? in an experimental model with defects created in rat femurs through histological analysis, evaluating also the rate of interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and TNF-α present in each inflammatory process existing in bone repair.Materials and Methods: 36 Wistar rats aged 8 weeks and about 300 grams underwent surgery femur bone defect creating a 5mm long and 3mm wide to get in medullary tissue. The animals were randomly divided into four groups: Group I - Bio-Oss ? (Geistlich Wolhusen Sons Ltd., Switzerland), Group II - Bone Ceramic ? (Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland), Group III - Osteogen ? (Impladent Ltd., Hollywood, USA), Group Control - clot. As each group, the femur had their bone biomaterial filled by correspondent, except for the control group that had filled with blood clot. Thirty days after surgery, animals were euthanized and each operated femur removed, decalcified, cut with a microtome and blade made for microscopic histological analysis. Results: In thirty days, no significant difference in bone formation between the groups. However, as the rate of the marking of proinflammatory cytokines, Bio- Oss showed the lowest rate of TNF-α and in only two places a rate slightly. The same occurred with IL-1, but showing slight rate at six sites. Regarding IL-6, the rate was moderate to severe in most sites. The Bone Ceramic showed higher rate of TNF-α in relation to Bio-oss, maintained a balance in relation to IL-1 and similar to IL-6. And Osteogen showed the highest rate of TNF-α and IL-1 and lower IL-6 when compared to Bio-oss and Bone Ceramic. Conclusion: The clinical implications from a study in animal models are controversial, but within the scope of work, a biomaterial with low TNF-α and IL- 1 and moderate content of IL-6 appears to be mature in 30 days , i.e., with optimal histological conditions of bone formation
(Geistlich Sons Ltd. Wolhusen, Su??a); Grupo II - Bone Ceramic? (Straumann AG, Basel, Su??a); Grupo III - Osteogen? (Impladent Ltd., Hollywood, EUA); Grupo Controle co?gulo.

Full textEnzymes of the Mur family (MurA-MurG) are essential for bacteria, since they catalyse the cytoplasmic steps of peptidoglycan biosynthesis, the major component of bacterial cell wall; they metabolize molecules that do not exist in eukaryotes, and are structurally and biochemically tractable. However, despite the fact that many anti-Mur inhibitors have been developed, few of these molecules have shown promising antibacterial activity, which has prompted the hypothesis that within the bacterial cytoplasm Mur enzymes may exist in a complex where the active sites are in closed proximity, blocking small molecule access from the outside. This suggestion is supported by the observation that in many organisms, genes encoding Mur enzymes are present in a single operon, often in the same order, and often pairs of genes are fused to generate a single polypeptide, advocating the possibility that complexes between these enzymes could be formed as soon as they are synthesized. We have obtained the first structural and functional information on the MurE-MurF fused form, present in the human pathogen Bordetella pertussis, and shown that it interacts with the peripheral glycosyltransferase MurG, suggesting the presence of a ternary enzymatic complex. Interestingly, we have found that B. pertussis MurG is able to self-associate and form different oligomeric species. This finding could strengthen the hypothesis of MurG as a scaffold protein capable of anchoring other Murs to the inner face of bacterial inner membrane, but could be also further explored to understand its potential role as a regulator of the activity of PG synthesis enzymes. These exciting results will open the path towards the understanding of how Mur enzymes interact within the bacterial cytoplasm, and could permit the eventual employment of Mur enzymes as de facto targets for novel antibiotic development

Full textThis project is a proposal for a new city hall in the small town of Strängnäs, located by Lake Mälaren. The area is characterised by its historic background and varying landscape. The given site for the project lies next to a public square, by one of the bays in Strängnäs. On one side of the building site, small wooden houses run up a hill where an old windmill stands. On the opposite side, blocks of brick houses rise up with Strängnäs cathedral in the background. The intersection of the two very different building typologies is unusual and although this kind of contrast is common in Strängnäs, it is ever so evident on the site of the new city hall. The new Strängnäs city hall is inspired by the characteristics of Strängnäs, such as the varying topography and mix of building typologies. It explores the unique and different qualities in the contrasting surroundings. The idea of the project is to preserve the fragmented structure and intimacy of the wooden houses, whilst simultaneously maintaining the solidness of the brick houses and the cathedral. The result is a scattered brick building connected by the terrain it stands on. The relationship between the disembodied building units forms a series of openings and outdoor spaces, creating connectivity, activity and flow between and around the city hall.
