Full textThe Elephant and the Journey is about what and how people see in the land and how this is expressed through art forms. The dissertation consists of three main parts. The first in the introduction explains the use of the narrative figuration form in Thai temple mural painting in my practice, and how I used it to apply to the contemporary context in Australia. The second concerns three main groups of work including Australian landscape paintings in the nineteenth century, aboriginal art works and Thai mural painting, which apply to the topic of landscape. The second part in Chapters I and II, examine how significant the perspective view in the landscape was for artists during the colonial period in Australia. At the same time I consult the practice in Aboriginal art which also concerns land, and how people communicate through the subject and how both practices apply to Thai art, with which I am dealing. Chapter III looks at works of individual artists in contemporary Australia including Tim Johnson, Judy Watson, Kathleen Petyarre Emily Kngwerreye, and then finishes with my studio work during 2004-2005. The third part, the conclusion refers to the notions of cultural geography as suggested by Mike Crang, Edward Relph and Christopher Tilley, which analyse how people relate to a location through their own experience. I describe how I used a Thai narrative verse written by my father to communicate my work to the Australian society in which I now live.

- 2. Following on from this, wall paintings would have been found in houses throughout the social scale, apart from the humblest dwellings.
- 3. The paintings were executed by itinerant painters who used pattern books as a source of design.
- 4. This form of decoration was most commonly found in the period 1550-1625, with few paintings prior to this date and a rapid decline in numbers after this period.
- 5. In some cases there is a connection between the content of the painting and the function of the room.

Full textThe purpose of this research is to investigate whether street artists make statements about current socia-political affairs as a form of popular protest and whether those statements can be reflected in another design discipline. such as jewellery design. while reflecting upon the work of Faith47. a South African social commentator. Cultural studies has been referenced as a theoretical framework in relation to cultural sup-groups and. a historic context is provided in order to better understand the significance of social commentary in graffiti, a form of street art produced by social sub-qroup, and made during a period known as Apartheid and currently. in Post-Apartheid South Africa. A range of jewellery then emerged from the research. dealing with the aspects of social-political commentary. as an interpretation of a form of protest art and applied to wearable jewellery. The products incorporate word and images that are provocative and invite the viewer to question and reflect upon what in my view was a contentions and significant period in the history of South Africa.

Full textThis PhD examines the mural cycle that decorates the upper gallery of the main cloister of the Badia Fiorentina in Florence, called Chiostro degli Aranci, in relation to the postmasaccian Florentine painting. The cycle consists of 10 lunettes painted between 1436 and 1438 with the buon fresco technique and a strip of basement decoration that accompanies them. This work is attributed in this PhD to Giovanni di Consalvo, painter of Portuguese origins, whose name comes from a ledger of the monastery of the Badia Fiorentina, now preserved in the ASF, that mentions repeatedly Consalvo as a recipient of payments for pigments and other materials to carry out the work of the frescoes. The frescoes in the Chiostro degli Aranci are the result of a commission Abbot Gomes of Portugal, who ruled the Badia Fiorentina during the period, and respond to his desire for reform monasticism and to return it to its origins, to the Rule and to the Desert Fathers. The analysis allows us to consider the mural cycle of Badia Fiorentina as the first introducer of Flemish influence on Florentine painting, mainly with the pictorial resource of the reflection of objects in the water. The role of the cycle as the introducer of this resource in Florentine painting was very important for the early work of some of the painters of the next generation as Piero della Francesca or Alesso Baldovinetti. On the other hand, teaches us today, over a period of the Florentine painting, dominated by large mural cycles as the apse of Sant'Egidio or the Gianfigliazzi chapel of Santa Trinita and that today we can only learn about them through its predecessor, the cycle of Badia.

Full textThere are nowadays many studies about aristocratic houses and their decoration. This study on decoration was achieved from the huge corpus of seignorial residences dated between the 13th and the 16th Centuries in the region of Viennois and Grésivaudan where a number of seignorial residences was found. Fifty-three selected sites gathered from a wide investigation were organized in two ways: firstly by documentary research in the archives, the libraries and the center of document resource, secondly by intervention in the studied area. This research focused on different categories of decoration: architectural, figurative, sculptural and painted decor. The research aims to establish the corpus of seigniorial residences which will enable it to study the entire decorative aspect of the selected sites. This will also allow for a new perspective of aristocratic house research. The castles and the fortified manor houses are known today as the existing aristocratic accommodation, which are in quite a large number and are unique in their architectural elements. The similarity of the two seignorial residences lies in their architectural characteristics. The quantity of them allows for an extension of the research framework for determining a sufficient number in terms of the studied sites. On the contrary, the difference of status between the castles and the fortified manor houses permits a comparison of their decorative aspects. Le Dauphiné has a great number of seignorial residences. The territory of Grésivaudan has been recognized for suitable settlement with fertile land in the mountains of Chartreuse and Belledonne. As for Viennois, this territory has a geographical variation which caused different characteristics of houses. Moreover, the history of Dauphiné presents a long period of independence with the succession of several Counts. The conquest policy was applied for defending the enemies in the surrounding areas and also for conquering more land. A great number of seignorial residences was included in this research. The study period from the 13th to the 16th Centuries is known as the transitional time from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the Renaissance, there were many changes in different domains. These changes reflect the evolution of the decoration of aristocratic houses. The study of decoration of the respective seignorial residences will enable us to learn about the characteristics of the architectural and figurative decoration. Understanding the architectural decor involves a study of the architectural elements: doors, windows, turrets, watch-turrets, brattices, arrow holes and chimneys. The figurative decoration means a study of figurative presentation. The elements concerned are painting motifs and mural painting, sculptural motifs and figures. Molding in architectural decor emphasizes the structure of decorative elements. The frames of the doors and windows can be noticed by volumetric and symmetrical effects which can be seen on the lintel and the lower part of the frames of the structure. The appearance of sculpted shields above the doors and windows help complete the decorative aspect of the elements. The chimney has the same decorative effect but the molded decor would be on the upper part and the corbel or side posts. As for the figurative decoration, the presence of different figures like trees, animals, men create an in-depth dimension and more narration or a narrative scene. The painting motifs and the mural painting form a narrative which show a series of pictures which tell the sequence of an event or several successive scenes. Besides, as the corpus of the research assembles a great number of several types of decoration dating from 13th to 16th Centuries, it consequently reflects a stylistic evolution of decorative elements

Full textThis thesis studies the decoration of baths in the 2nd-5th c. CE Algeria. The research studies edifices either published or kept in archives, including photos, plans and archaeological reports, and is equally based on fieldwork, revealing data firstly dealt with in this work. No scientific study of baths and their decorative programs has been conducted prior to this research. After a comprehensive study of the state of research of baths and their decoration in North Africa, these discovered in Algeria were thoroughly studied to constitute part of the larger context. Thus typology of the plans, chronology, and the place of baths in the urban tissue where also taken into consideration. Inscriptions found in various baths in North Afiica, including these of Algeria were newly studied, to reveal further indispensable information and to widen our knowledge of the materials used, the specific terminology, the patrons, the decoration, etc. The present research concentrat on two topics: first, the different types of decoration, floor as well as walls, were analyzed in view of their technique, iconography, and which part of the bath they were decorating. Second, statues found in the baths, which were studied according to their subject matter and their specific placement. The reading of the different decorative systems enabled to put the decoration in its architectural context and to disclose the particular elements characterizing baths worldwide as well as their specific regional and local manifestations. Following the analysis of the architectural elements of baths and their embellishment, the research tried to establish the coherence between both function and decoration
