Abstract:

Abstract:
Pro gradu -tutkielmassani tarkastelen Oulun seudun murretta internetin keskustelupalstoilla. Aineistoni koostuu viidestä keskusteluketjusta, joissa on yhteensä 174 viestiä. Muita tutkimiani kielenpiirteitä on käytetty murteellisissa muodoissa prosentuaalisesti seuraavasti: yleisgeminaatio (91), jälkitavujen vokaaliyhtymä OA (91), tk-yhtymän assimilaatio kk:ksi (88), ts-yhtymän tt : t -edustus (86), svaavokaali (84), inessiivin pääte -sA (78) ja ts-yhtymän ht : t -edustus (14). Aineiston suurimman ryhmän muodostavat murretta positiivisesti kuvailevat kommentit, joita on kaikista kommenteista laskettuna 16 prosenttiyksikköä. Toiseksi suurin joukko koostuu murteen muutosta koskevista kannanotoista, joiden määrä kattaa kaikista kommenteista 14 prosenttiyksikköä.

This study aims to discuss the pedagogical ideas of Murray Schafer. “Pedagogical ideas” are here understood as the educational philosophy that guides and composes the practice of teaching. Through the bibliographic review of Schafer‟s work, alongside specialized periodicals and related literature, three central axes that comprise his pedagogical ideas are proposed: ecology, spiritual experience and the aesthetical experience. Each of these axes was considered as a result of a historical development that generates philosophical conceptions from a process of contradictions between ideas. Thus, we discuss the ecology and spiritual experience through the dichotomy between mechanistic thinking and ecological thinking, i.e. the connection/separation relationship between man and the whole. The aesthetic experience was considered by the educational perspective, and analyzed by the dichotomy between the pedagogical currents that are based on an ideal of man to build educational proposals (pedagogies of essence) and currents which take man as he really is (pedagogies of existence). This analysis was correlated with the work of Murray Schafer, inserting the author in the context of these dichotomies. With this, we can observe the construction of his worldview, as well as the structure, objectives and considerations which underlie his pedagogical practice. His pedagogical ideas show a pattern of interaction between the axes discussed: the sacralization of the aesthetic experience of soundscape as a mediator of the ecological relation between the individual and the whole, i.e. a spiritual relationship between art and the individual as a means of connection from the singular to the total, understood here from an ecological perspective. Rouliere, Camille. "Visions of Waters in Lower Murray Country." Thesis, Normandie, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018NORMC014/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Waters are contested entities that are currently at the centre of most scientific discussions about sustainability. Discourse around water management underlines both the serious absence and devastating overabundance of water: rising sea levels compete against desertification; hurricanes and floods follow periods of prolonged drought. As we increasingly pollute, canalise and desalinate waters, the ambiguous nature of our relationship with these entities becomes visible. And, while we continue to damage what most sustains us, collective precarity grows. It is therefore unsurprising that shifting our understanding, and subsequent use, of water has been described as one of the biggest—and most pressing—challenges of our time.My research answers to this challenge. It centres on spatial poetics, that is, on the manner in which people engage and interact with their environment through art. More precisely, I explore the relationships between humans, waters and sound—both intrinsic and human-produced—in Lower Murray Country (South Australia). My aim is to unveil, theorise and create maps of these co-evolving relationships to reveal an array of manners to perceive and relate to these waters; and then draw on this plurality to question—and potentially reimagine—their cultural construction and representation. In order to do so, I transform waters into a leitmotif which enables me to weave my investigation together and move in-between theoretical and physical spaces to bring people and their environments into dialogue, both at the local and global levels. In particular, I draw on the watery movements of flow and resonance to operate this weaving, and associate these with rhythmanalysis and resounding (after philosophers Henri Lefebvre and Fran Dyson, respectively). I am also inspired by the work of philosopher and poet Édouard Glissant and use his concept of Relation as a key to enable me to translate these watery movements textually.I apply this aqueous theoretical frame to nearly two centuries of sonic production—ranging from Ngarrindjeri performance and colonial ballads through to contemporary classical music and sound art; and to nearly two centuries of evolution in the sonic character of Lower Murray Country’s waters—ranging from disfiguring deforestation and damming through to rising salinity and irrigation. As such, this thesis is built on the “accumulation of examples” advocated by Glissant (Poetics of Relation 172-4). It is structured around four sections—four punctiform visions of waters written as a prelude to a potential infinity of others. Furtive, partial, oriented and fragmented, these visions denote times of particular significance: times open to challenge; times of hinges and articulations where radical alteration (can) occur

Tsiotsios, Chourmouzios. "Shape estimation in murky water using photometric stereo." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/57033.

Full text
Abstract:
Photometric stereo offers the possibility of object shape reconstruction via reasoning about the amount of light reflected from oriented surfaces. However, in murky media such as sea water light interacts not only with the scene but also with the medium particles. The resulting image formation model is complex and hard to optimize directly for scene orientation and albedo. The effectiveness of previous solutions has been limited since they were based on unrealistic assumptions about the imaging conditions or on external hardware for estimating some of the unknown model variables. In this thesis we propose a complete Photometric Stereo framework that yields useful reconstructions within a wide range of conditions in murky water. First, we show how the problem can be simplified by taking account of the additive light component that is backscatterd by the particles. A backscatter compensation method is proposed, based on the observation that the respective light signal varies smoothly across the sensor according to the pixel position with respect to the light source but is scene-depth independent. This makes its approximation experimentally appropriate using only the captured images and results in shape reconstruction similar to that in clean water. Second, we propose an uncalibrated method for solving Photometric Stereo in the presence of near-field illumination within murky water. In this case, the incident illumination on the scene is non-uniform as it varies according to the scene depth and the attenuation coefficient of the medium. We propose an algorithm for optimizing the resulting complex system of equations without resorting to external equipment or calibration. Finally, we design a novel Photometric Stereo system with dynamic lighting that can predict the validity of different photometric models in uncontrolled imaging conditions. Both our and previous approaches have been based on simplifications of the original-complex image formation in murky water. The effectiveness of such simplified models differs according to the imaging conditions and it can not be easily estimated as both the scene and the environment are usually unknown. Our proposed system can predict the validity of such photometric models, based on the observation that the change in estimated surface normals as the light sources position is varied with respect to the camera is a direct estimate of a model's effectiveness. In this way, the system can approximate the true reconstruction error and adapt automatically some critical factors in order to maximize the reconstruction quality, such as the camera-scene distance, the light sources position and the photometric model. Our work is evaluated through extended numerical simulations and real experiments in a water tank and real port water, and yields detailed reconstructions over a wide range of distances and underwater visibilities.

Thesis (MTh)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The central problem with which this research is working is: has there been a shift in the members of the Dutch Reformed Congregation Murray (De Doorns) concept of the church, and, if so, how did it affect the role expectation of the ministers? The purpose of the study is to determine the church concept and role expectation of the members of the congregation and to help the congregation to discover their missional identity. It is important that the congregation will learn spiritual discernment. For the purpose of the study the work was done within the field of practical theology on the basis of the cross methology as found in Studying Congregations in Africa ( Hendriks 2004). This practical theology methology works with a constant correlation-hermeneutic between the Word of God and the world, between context and identity. This correlation is called spiritual discernment and when this happens it will lead to a certain strategy, a way of life in which the members of the congregation do not think institutionally (regarding the role of the minister), but where the members themselves stand before God and are open for his guidance to be light and salt for the world. The theological foundation of missional theology on the basis of the doctrine of the Trinity and the practical implications for the church are discussed in Chapter 2. This is normative for missional theology. Chapter 3 is a discussion of the context of the congregation with regard to the current situation in the world, the wider community and the congregation. It is common knowledge that the world is currently in a time of major, fast and unpredictable change. It is important that the congregation will use the change in the way identity is formed in a positive manner by creating an alternative identity in Christ Jesus. The role expectations of the ministers are central to the research problem. In Chapter 4 the researcher gives what he believes to be the normative role of the minister should a congregation want to learn to live with spiritual discernment. For this to happen the ministers need to establish certain faith-forming habits. Without these faith-forming habits it will be impossible for the minister to lead the congregation to live with spiritual discernment. The Dutch Reformed congregation of Murray (De Doorns) which was the focus of the study, was researched by using a qualitative questionnaire and ethnographic research. The results were discussed by triangulation and it thus became clear that there are clear differences with regard to the church model of choice and the role expectations for the ministers. The research shows that there has been a definite shift in the church concept of the members of the congregation. This shift, however has not had a major effect on the role expectations for the ministers. There is thus some degree of conflict between the church concept of the members of the congregation and their role expectations for the ministers. If this conflict is not addressed and the role expectations of the ministers cleared anew, the congregation will not learn to live with spiritual discernment and will not be able to join the missio Dei.

Birkinshaw, Matt. "Murky waters : infrastructure, informality and reform in Delhi." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2017. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3770/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contributes a rich empirical analysis of urban water governance in Delhi, with particular attention to informality, groundwater and reforms. My research aims to develop understanding of the relationships between reforms, under both private sector management and a new progressive government, and existing informal water arrangements, particularly groundwater use, which households rely on in the absence of adequate public sector supply. I draw on interviews with 150 residents, as well as water suppliers, project officials, government staff, politicians and party workers over 18 months of multi-sited research in South Delhi’s unauthorised colonies and urban villages. I use the idea of ‘informal infrastructures’ or ‘infrastructural informality’ connects my empirical research across different sites and scales. Bringing ideas from the literature on informality and infrastructures together under this framing offers modifications to the ways that ‘informality’ and ‘infrastructures’ are often understood and used. I use informality in this way ‘as a method’ to focus on the contingently enacted, materially and socially constituted character of various infrastructure processes. I analyse the informal governance and politics of water supply at three difference sites and scales. Within Delhi’s government network at an all-city level I note the formally and informally differentiated nature of the network and the challenges of knowledge and control of it. Outside of the piped network, I examine the decentralised infrastructures of tubewells and water tankers, primarily in the South Delhi areas of Sangam Vihar and Deoli. These decentralised supply modes are socially embedded in systems of party politics, caste and land-ownership with a range of opportunities for discretion, patronage and misallocation. They illustrate the connection and contrasts between informality in different resources, such as land and water, and infrastructures. I then examine an additional layer of urban water governance, in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) for urban water reform, in a zone around the Malviya Nagar area, also in South Delhi. I argue that the complexity of India’s urban social hydrology, even in wealthy areas, has been underestimated by this initiative, and that despite an evolution of the PPP model concerns over the project’s equity and viability remain. The high level of informality across different infrastructural systems in my research sites suggests the coexistence of a submerged ‘technopolitics’ operating through bureaucratic and technical modes of governance, with both overt and covert uses of intercession, personalisation and force. The study makes contributions to knowledge in the following areas: informal urban water supply in India, particularly in unauthorised colonies and urban villages, in a region of high groundwater use, its relationship to water supply reforms from both government and a multinational public-private partnership.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports on some applications of murray polygons, which are a generalization of space filling curves and of Peano polygons in particular, to process digital image data. Murray techniques have been used on 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional images, which are in cartesian/polar co-ordinates. Attempts have been made to resolve many associated aspects of image processing, such as connected components labelling, hidden surface removal, scaling, shading, set operations, smoothing, superimposition of images, and scan conversion. Initially different techniques which involve quadtree, octree, and linear run length encoding, for processing images are reviewed. Several image processing problems which are solved using different techniques are described in detail. The steps of the development from Peano polygons via multiple radix arithmetic to murray polygons is described. The outline of a software implementation of the basic and fast algorithms are given and some hints for a hardware implementation are described The application of murray polygons to scan arbitrary images is explained. The use of murray run length encodings to resolve some image processing problems is described. The problem of finding connected components, scaling an image, hidden surface removal, shading, set operations, superimposition of images, and scan conversion are discussed. Most of the operations described in this work are on murray run lengths. Some operations on the images themselves are explained. The results obtained by using murray scan techniques are compared with those obtained by using standard methods such as linear scans, quadtrees, and octrees. All the algorithms obtained using murray scan techniques are finally presented in a menu format work bench. Algorithms are coded in PS-algol and the C language.

Abstract:
This keynote address was delivered on August 6, 2018 at Societas Homiletica at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and explores the relationship between preaching and identity. The lecture introduces Pauli Murray, a local saint whose activism, writings, and ministry challenged the church and broader society. After a detailed introduction, I consider three principal influences on Pauli’s voice: Cornelia Smith Fitzgerald, Langston Hughes, and James H. Cone. Cornelia Smith Fitzgerald, Pauli’s maternal grandmother, provided a lens for thinking about the ethical and spatial contexts in which sermons arise. Langston Hughes, a fêted poet and author, offered literary inspiration and a model for moving among different genres. James Cone, a path-breaking scholar, gave Pauli vital theological footing and a framework for linking preaching, identity, and activism. Overall, I argue that Pauli Murray makes a singular contribution to the study of African American preaching.

Banks, Kirsten Francesca. "The John Murray Archive, 1820s-1840s : (re)establishing the house identity." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/17858.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the continuing growth of the House of Murray during the 1820s-1840s. Prior to the 1820s, Murray had enjoyed massive success with the publications of the work of Lord Byron, whose celebrity, and the profits generated, contributed significantly to the House’s prestigious reputation. Murray’s move from Fleet Street to Albemarle Street in 1812 also signified the House’s shift from bookselling to publishing, which enabled Murray to attract an increasing number of high-profile names from the worlds of literature, travel and exploration, the sciences, and politics. Murray’s drawing-room at Albemarle Street became renowned throughout the trade for its gentlemanly gatherings, comprising of the luminaries of the day. The four chapters of this thesis explore how Murray (re)established the House identity in different markets during the 1820s-1840s, as the Romantic epoch diffused into an increasingly commercialised era, with new production methods, an expanding marketplace, and increasing competition. Chapter One considers Murray’s use of the drawing room at Albemarle Street to construct a House identity amongst selected members of his inner circle. It also looks at the importance of the Byronic legacy to the House and the means by which Murray sought to protect it. Chapter Two engages with the contrasting side of the House, namely the ‘cheap’ publications, which Murray published in response to the growth of this market in the late-1820s and early-1830s. During this time Murray used some of his well-established assets, such as Byron, Crabbe and the Quarterly Review, to retain the prestige of the House, while attempting to reach new readers within the burgeoning middle class. Chapter Three examines Murray’s correspondence with some of his female authors to consider how the House responded to authors of both genders, and, with reference to ongoing scholarship regarding ‘women’s writing’, questions the veracity of a gender-centric approach when applied to the study of archival materials; the chapter’s findings suggest that both Murray’s male and female authors were treated similarly. The final chapter explores how Murray strove to retain control over the House’s reputation as international trading possibilities developed. The roots of the 'Handbooks' and the 'Colonial and Home Library' are also traced back further than has previously been considered, and read within the context of the ongoing re-branding of Byron discussed in Chapters One and Two. The House’s literary figures, and the Quarterly Review, were used by Murray in the 1840s to promote the values and prestige of the House in America, Europe and the Colonies. This thesis offers much previously unpublished archival material from the John Murray Archive at the National Library of Scotland. It builds upon previous scholarship on John Murray and seeks to contextualise some of these lines of enquiry through providing a sustained study of the House during the 1820s-1840s. It uses quantitative analysis, where possible, to provide further grounding for some of its claims, and situates the findings within the growing body of research in this area. It is the underlying aim of this thesis to foreground the House’s shift from the ‘Romanticism’ of the early-nineteenth century towards the ‘commercialism’ of the mid-nineteenth century, whilst serving as a point of reference for further scholarship on the John Murray Archive during this time period.

Abstract:
The objective of this work is to prove that, within the framework of Vachet's "Crisis of Ideologies", the philosophy of Murray Bookchin does not offer the basis for an ideological renewal. By concentrating our efforts on his notion of complementarity, we will first attempt to prove that it is the central notion of Murray Bookchin's thought. Secondly, we will try to demonstrate, through the analysis of this notion, that we cannot find the basis for an ideological renewal. Our development is divided in two parts comprising of five chapters. The first part, which is divided into two chapters, outlines the theoretical foundations of the notion. In it, we analyze the role of complementarity on an internal social level, and on the new proposed relationship between humanity and the natural world. In the second part, which is divided into three chapters, we examine the forms of his notion of complementarity within his social project, especially, in relation to the notions of community, politics, and economy.

Abstract:
The research centres mainly around the following questions: * What is the nature of the role of the woman in society? * What is the nature of role conflict? * Does the female married teacher experience role conflict? In the literature study attention was paid to the nature of the role of the woman in society and the nature of role conflict. Six areas of the experiencing of role conflict were identified: negative role conflict in the role as mother, as teacher and between the two roles and positive in the role as mother, as teacher and between the two roles. Conflict can be time-based, strain-based or behaviour-based. An empirical research was conducted by means of a structured post questionnaire to determine to which extent the female teacher with children of her own experiences role conflict. Finally a summary of the literature study and empirical study was made. It was found that the female married teacher has a positive attitude towards her dual role. The only areas where she experiences role conflict are time-based and strain-based. Suggestions were made with regard to future research.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis comprises a biographical sketch of the 1st Duke of Atholl, Lord John Murray, the Scottish magnate and nobleman, 1660 – 1724. A background of his family tree is provided with instances of how his Murray ancestors raised their family into the peerage. Lord Murray would become the 1st Duke of Atholl less than one hundred years later. Discussion then turns to the religious situation during Lord Murray's life. He was raised Episcopalian but converted to Presbyterianism in order to wed Lady Katherine Hamilton, the eldest daughter of the 3rd Duke of Hamilton and his wife, Anne, Duchess of Hamilton in 1683. This marriage had a profound impact on the Murray family and his role in the ensuing years of civil battles and continental wars. Estate matters are set in place against the historical background of the era. Lord Murray's acquisition and control of the Atholl Estate from his father in 1689, is examined. His handling of the contentious Glenlyon Estate is prominently reviewed. The oversight of the Athollmen, the large, mainly Highland army loyal to the Atholl banner, who fought for the Crown in the Covenanting Wars of Scotland, and Lord Murray's youthful experiences during his father's leadership and later, his own, are explored. Murray's political fortunes from his early career through to his statesmanship in Westminster are examined. His leadership of the Commission of Inquiry into the Glencoe Massacre and his rise to Secretary of State for Scotland in 1696, resignation and fall, and his resurgence under Queen Anne, as the most vocal magnate opposing the Incorporating Union of 1707, the loss of his wife and heir, the repercussions of the early eighteenth-century Jacobite rebellions, his response to his sons' involvement in the uprisings and his final years finish the work.

Abstract:

George, Amy Kathryn. "Eucalypt regeneration on the Lower Murray floodplain, South Australia." Connect to this title online, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/37706.

Abstract:
Vegetation along the River Murray floodplains has been shown to be in a severe state of decline. This decline is amplified by the impositions of river regulation. In South Australia, where vegetation losses have been great, regeneration is limited and may result in not only individual tree losses but also widespread population decline. This study aimed to examine the relationship between river flows and the regeneration process in populations of Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eucalyptus largiflorens. The current structure of the populations was examined to determine if a viable number of varying age-classed trees were present. Tree surveys conducted at Banrock Station determined that while densities were low for both species, E. camaldulensis had a more sustainable population structure than E. largiflorens. Growth stages for both species illustrated highly clumped distribution, which is believed to correspond with river flooding magnitudes and frequencies. To address the potential link between tree distribution and flooding within the River Murray, a hydrological analysis was conducted for Banrock Station using river flows at the South Australian border from 1900 to 2003. The amount of time growth stages for each species were inundated was found to be greatly reduced under regulated flows compared to natural flows. This has resulted in shifted localized regeneration patterns corresponding with E. camaldulensis' greater demand for inundation than E. largiflorens. Moderate magnitude flows have been most impacted by regulation, and consequently these are the very flows needed for floodplain tree population maintenance. Flowering and seed fall for E. camaldulensis and E. largiflorens were monitored at Banrock Station for 22 months to identify losses in reproductive potential resulting from tree decline. While seed viability was not affected by vigour, trees with visually reduced vigour were found to produce less fruit and had reduced seed fall, as well as a reduced rate of fruit development. Dendrochronological techniques were applied to floodplain trees. Age and size relationships could be established, implying that such techniques can be applied in South Australia to high quality sites. Growth responses within cohorts were similar and easily matched between individuals illustrating cyclic, but not necessarily seasonal correlations. This work verified the preferential selection of younger trees for dendroecological studies, and identified a relationship between on moderate flows and measurable girth expansion in both floodplain tree species.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the question “What is the essence of the Murray Darling river system conundrum that is usually posed as an issue of environmental remediation?”- following perceptions of problems in catchment strategy formulation regarding project selection and public consultation. The question is initially seen as having four facets – governance, public, participation and remediation. An initial literature review indicated that previous examination of these topics seemed insufficiently radical or comprehensive for the enquiry’s purposes, seeming not to attribute full humanness to members of the public. A fieldwork program of quasi-anthropological nature was conducted. Interpretation of the fieldwork reports focuses primarily on the lack of attribution of full humanness to members of the public. Interpretive techniques including a phenomenological-style process was applied and found that the district houses a number of unrecognised people “nexors’ occupying linking or nexus roles who exercise personal skills and initiatives to underpin effective remediation outcomes. Towards the end of the fieldwork program, further literature indicated that the initial four-facet nature of the enquiry should be reformulated, to include the overall nature of western society as it appears in the district (in place of participation), to reconstitute the concept of remediation more radically. Governance as a topic is broader than the ways in which it appears in the examined district, and suitable hybridizing of competing world view concepts remains unresolved in this thesis

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis investigates whether different public accountability forums interact with one another when they oversee the same decision maker. It contributes to the larger study of how decision makers are held to account in constitutional democracies where the simultaneous operation of multiple accountability relationships has become routine. Looking beyond the dominant assumption that multiple forums autonomously assess a decision maker's accountability against different and diverging standards, I aim to understand whether forums can influence the standards against which other forums evaluate the same decision maker. I draw on political and normative understandings of public accountability to answer one central question: do different public accountability forums interact with one another in a way that influences the scope of what a decision maker is obliged to account for and the normative standards against which that account is evaluated? Answering this research question involves examining the mechanisms by which interactions might occur and the motivations of actors to interact. I begin by critically reviewing the literature on multiple accountabilities, arguing that existing approaches can only partially explain how public accountability is constructed in multiple accountability regimes. I argue the focus on typologies of accountability emphasise the attributes of individual forums and overlook the broader dynamics of the accountability regime. I then develop an analytical framework to examine how the interactions between different forums, and other actors, might reshape the accountability dialogue. This framework is used to analyse the case of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan in Australia (2008-2012). By presenting a contextSrich analysis of interactions between forums, and other actors, I find that multiple forums act in concert with one another and other actors to contest and then reshape the standards against which the two decision makers are evaluated. The thesis concludes by discussing the implications of recognising accountability interactions for understanding multiple accountability regimes.

Murph, Megan Elizabeth. "MAX NEUHAUS, R. MURRAY SCHAFER, AND THE CHALLENGES OF NOISE." UKnowledge, 2018. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/music_etds/118.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I analyzed Max Neuhaus’s (1939-2009) and R. Murray Schafer’s (b. 1932) commentary and work regarding noise, its control, and its relationship with the environment from the 1960 to the 1980s. Both Neuhaus and Schafer as well as those more directly involved with noise abatement research and policy were responding to the challenges and possibilities that noise posed in the latter twentieth century. In this project, I delved into these substantial links and argued that responding to and engaging with noise abatement policies was a key impetus to much of their work, which scholarship has yet to critically examine. Inspired by the listening strategies that Neuhaus and Schafer set forth, I also considered ways in which music educators and social activists might approach sound, becoming aural advocates or activists when working in their communities. The works selected for analysis reflected contemporaneous studies held in the USA and Canada investigating the psychological and physiological impact of noise on humans, animals, and their landscape. Just as these investigations grew into the 1970s, new attention developed towards acoustic ecology and public sound art, both fields dealing with the relationship between sounds, living beings, and the environment. Neuhaus’s works analyzed include the Listen series (1966-76), his New York Times op-ed piece titled “BANG, BOOooom, ThumP, EEEK, tinkle" (1974), and the Emergency Vehicle Siren Redesign project (1978-1989). These Neuhaus projects provided an alternative to the movement towards acoustic ecology put forward by his contemporary, Schafer. Analyses of Schafer and the World Soundscape Project’s (WSP) publications included Ear Cleaning (1967), The Book of Noise (1970), and A Survey of Community Noise Bylaws in Canada (1972). Featured were primary sources from the Max Neuhaus Papers (Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library), newspaper reviews, and clippings. Also included were interviews with artists/associates of Neuhaus from his performance career (Phil Orenstein) and his Sirens project (Ray Gallon, Owen Greenspan, Herr Lugus, Julia Prospero, and Wolfgang Staehle) as well as Schafer's fellow WSP collaborator, Hildegard Westerkamp.

Francis, Cathy, and n/a. "A multi-scale investigation into the effects of permanent inundation on the flood pulse, in ephemeral floodplain wetlands of the River Murray." University of Canberra. Health, Design & Science, 2005. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20061128.153926.

Abstract:
Using a multi-scale experimental approach, the research undertaken in this thesis investigated the role of the flood pulse in ephemeral floodplain wetlands of the River Murray, in order to better understand the impact of river regulation (and permanent inundation) on these wetlands. An ecosystem-based experiment was conducted on the River Murray floodplain, to compare changes in nutrient availability and phytoplankton productivity in three ephemeral wetlands (over a drying/reflooding cycle) with three permanently inundated wetlands. In the ephemeral wetlands, both drying and re-flooding phases were associated with significant increases in nutrient availability and, in some cases, phytoplankton productivity. It was demonstrated that the ?flood pulse?, as described by the Flood Pulse Concept (FPC), can occur in ephemeral wetlands in dryland river-floodplain systems, although considerable variation in the nature of the pulse existed amongst these wetlands. Results of this experiment suggest that factors such as the degree of drying and length of isolation during the dry phase, the rate of re-filling, timing of re-flooding and the number of drying/re-flooding cycles may be potentially important in producing the variation observed. Permanent inundation of ephemeral wetlands effectively removed these periods of peak nutrient availability and phytoplankton productivity, resulting in continuously low levels (of nutrient availability and phytoplankton productivity). It was concluded that alteration of the natural hydrological cycle in this way can significantly reduce nutrient availability, primary production and secondary production, essentially changing the structure and function, the ecology, of these wetlands. Equally, the results of this experiment indicate that some of the changes resulting from river regulation and permanent inundation can be somewhat reversed, within a relatively short period of time, given re-instatement of a more natural hydrological regime. A mesocosm experiment was used to examine the influence of the dry phase, specifically the effect of the degree of wetland drying, on patterns of nutrient availability and primary productivity comprising the flood pulse. Compared to permanent inundation, re-flooding of completely desiccated sediments increased carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) availability while partial drying generally decreased, or had little effect on, C and N availability after re-flooding. However, degree of drying had little effect on phosphorus availability or rates of primary production measured after re-flooding, and it is possible that these two factors are related. Partial drying reduced rates of community respiration after reflooding, possibly a reflection of the reduced carbon concentrations measured in these mesocosms in this phase of the experiment. Degree of drying also influenced the macrophyte community (measured after three months of flooding), with plant biomass generally decreasing and species diversity increasing as the degree of drying increased (with the exception of complete sediment desiccation which had lasting negative effects on both macrophyte biomass and species diversity). The results of the ecosystem and mesocosm experiments were utilised, in addition to results collected from the same experiment conducted at two smaller scales (minicosms and microcosms), to assess whether the effects of hydrological regime on nutrient availability at the ?wetland? scale could be replicated in smaller-scale experiments. None of the smaller-scaled experiments included in this investigation were able to replicate the specific response to hydrological regime recorded at the ecosystem scale, however the mesocosm experiment did produce results that were more similar to those at the ecosystem scale than those produced by the mini and microcosm experiments. The results of this study indicated that extrapolation of results from small-scale experiments should be undertaken with caution, and confirmed that a multi-scale approach to ecological research is wise, where large-scale field experimentation and/or monitoring provides a check on the accuracy, and hence relevance, of conclusions reached via mesocosm experiments.
