Hans, Christian Tingelstad. "The Effect of Cold Acclimation on Changes in Muscle Activity." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/26256.

Abstract:
Human beings have been exposed to different cold conditions throughout time, and have through cold acclimation developed mechanisms to survive in these conditions. Cold acclimation can be elicited through exposure to natural cold climates, or artificially induced in a laboratory to study the body’s response to repeated cold exposures. Several studies looking at the effects of cold acclimation in humans have been conducted during the last 50 years, and have reported that cold acclimation can lead to a change in skin and core temperature, heat production and shivering. Subjects: Nine bariatric surgery patients. Methods: Patients had a DXA bone scan and fasting blood draw at baseline, three, and six months following surgery. Abstract:
Three novel mutations (G159D, L29Q and E59D/D75Y) in cardiac troponin C (CTnC) associate their clinical outcomes with a given cardiomyopathy. Current paradigms propose that sarcomeric mutations associated with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) decrease the myofilament calcium sensitivity while those associated with hypertrophic (HCM) cardiomyopathy increase it. Therefore, we incorporated the mutant CTnCs into skinned cardiac muscle in order to determine if their effects on the calcium regulation of tension and ATPase activity coincide with the current paradigms and phenotypic outcomes. Full text
Abstract:
Recently, it has been postulated that fatigue is a mechanism to protect the muscle fiber from deleterious ATP depletion and cell death. The ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel is believed to play a major role in this mechanism. Under metabolic stress, the channels open, reducing membrane excitability, Ca2+ release and force production. This alleviates energy demand within the fiber, as activation of the channel reduces ATP consumption from cellular ATPases. Loss of KATP channel activity during fatigue results in excessive intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) levels, likely entering the fiber throug

The morphology of NMJ was quantified in soleus and EDL muscles during postnatal development. Differences were extensively quantified in adults by measuring various parameters (e.g. junctional area, terminal area, width/length ratio, fragmentation of the terminal, shape coefficient). The fluorescent marker FMI-43 was used to label the presynaptic synaptic vesicles in the terminals, and postsynaptic acetylcholine receptors were labelled with fluorescent Rh α-bungarotoxin. Fibre type proportions and fibre diameter were also studied to see if there is any relation between NMJ morphology and fibre

Abstract:
Peripheral nerve injuries can cause serious health problems and result in lifelong disabilities. Although researchers have been studying peripheral nerve injuries, patients may not regain complete function of their muscles even after surgeries to repair their nerves are performed. However, animal studies have shown that after peripheral nerve cut and repair (muscle self-reinnervation), stretch-reflex in the affected muscles does not recover, which may affect the muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity of all muscle synergists, as well as joint kinematics. The purpose of this work was to determine whether arachidonic acid and other fatty acids might directly regulate the behavior of ion channels. Arachidonic acid is known to be liberated from plasma membrane phospholipid upon activation of cell surface receptors, and to subsequently act as a precursor to biologically active metabolites. This study was based on the rationale that the liberated arachidonic acid itself was a potential regulator of plasma membrane ion channels. Abstract:
Up to 85% of cyclists experience repetitive strain injuries (RSI's). During long bouts of repetitive tasks, muscle fatigue may cause mal-alignments in kinematics, having cumulative effects, leading to an RSI. Purpose: The study's purpose was to examine how changes in localized muscle fatigue relate to changes in movement kinematics in highly trained cyclists throughout a full fatigue protocol. Methods: Seven highly trained cyclists participated in a 2 session experiment. Session 1 included a VO2 max test and familiarization trial and Session 2 was the fatigue protocol.
