Full textArchaeology and museology are two scientific disciplines that are closely associated with Western society’s preoccupation with its past. The history of these disciplines has been marked by episodes of convergence and of divergence of interests with respect to acquiring and disseminating knowledge. Episodes of convergence have focused on the object, which for the last 200 years has brought museums and researchers together, often in the same workplace. By definition, the museum is a place of research, conservation and outreach; these are the roles that were played by the antiquarian, and later by the archaeologist, at the time when a museum was considered to be both a laboratory and a window onto the past. In contrast, episodes of divergence tend to be related to the disciplines themselves and arise from the needs of the scientific and professional community to establish certain parameters by defining their respective methodological frameworks and exploring the potential extent of their fields of activity. The development of archaeology and museology in Québec has been rapid and, for the last 40 years, has closely followed a disciplinary expansion in North America and Europe. It is argued here, however, that once the disciplines’ parameters have been established convergent interests should once more be able to come to the fore. The research presented here takes as a given the difficulty of reconciling the scientific interests of research with the dissemination of knowledge to society. The transmission of knowledge is a central concept in the problem addressed by this doctoral research. Since signs of interdisciplinarity are at present perceptible in the two fields of research, the proposed archaeomuseological model is intended as a concrete example demonstrating how and why the acquisition of knowledge is compatible with the dissemination of knowledge. After tracing the historical development of the two disciplines and placing them in the context of scientific discourse, the dissertation presents a conceptual model, based on the object and, more particularly, on the interpretation of the object. Interpretation acts as an interface for the two disciplines, making it possible to deal with the object as part of a single interdisciplinary concern, that is, the transmission of knowledge. The conceptual model is first used to project a three-step typology of archaeological museums and then to formulate the basic components of an analytical grid. This grid helps to identify elements related to interdisciplinary development and discourse, as well as those related to archaeomuseological treatment; in other words, elements that make it possible to activate the transmission of knowledge about the past. Through interpretation and its disciplinary interface, the model clearly shows the determining role played by the archaeological context. It is proposed that a study of the archaeological context makes it possible not only to evaluate the state of research on archaeological sites but also to better understand the visions of the past that are conveyed by museums. To verify this hypothesis, the model is applied to four archaeological museums in Québec: Pointe-à-Callière Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History; Archéo Topo Centre; Pointe-du-Buisson Archaeological Park; and Artillery Park Heritage Site of Canada. These institutions typify Québec museums in which the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge directly express Western society’s preoccupation with transmitting the past to the public. Far from developing in isolation, Québec archaeology and museology are actively involved in the scientific and public debates currently taking place in North America and Europe. The first step in the validation of the model is an exploration of interdisciplinarity and the connections that might be made between various disciplines. This exploration makes clear the importance of maintaining disciplinary independence with respect to research and the necessity of taking up the challenge of interdisciplinarity when it comes to interpretation. The second step in the validation offers a more specific examination of how visions of the past expressed in archaeological museums vary in their scope. By comparing the voices and echoes of the past with the visions of the past conveyed by museums, it is possible to observe the way in which ideological, cultural and social values are transmitted. Although such transmission is unavoidable, these values should at the very least be based on knowledge revealed by the object and its archaeological context. It is for this reason that the archaeomuseological model stresses the importance of using a site’s history, as revealed by archaeology and other disciplines, as a point of reference to ensure the transmission of knowledge. In this way, the local population, for whom the history of the site has a direct appeal, is encouraged to play an active role in the reflection that Western society wishes to undertake with respect to its past.

Full textCurious about the unexplained advent of the fashion museum, this study originated with the task of identifying and examining the basic characteristics of the “fashion museum, ” which it considers to be a historically specific construct. Since the 1990’s, the fashion museum has asserted itself in the cultural world as a new model of museum. This study inquires into the phenomena that undergirded this flourishing. If this institution first appeared in the 1980’s, it originated from an older model known as the “costume museum”. Thus I intend to undertake a study on the “fashion museum” using the observable phenomenon of the museum itself. To do so, this project inscribes the “fashion museum” in a long heritage tradition, demonstrating the conditions of its emergence and the trajectory that dress collections followed within the broader museum landscape, including the development of other forms of museums, from the first “costume museum” to the fashion museum of today. From a museological perspective, the fashion museum’s arrival as a new category of museum may seem truncated, and introduces ambiguity in the practices of dress collections. On the one hand, its discourse about objects is necessarily incomplete because it does not take into account the full range of typologies of vestimentary artifacts; on the other hand, it siphons interest away from older or less sumptuous collections. This type of museum exists in a state of tension, beholden to the insistence of speaking of “fashion” garments or of haute couture, rather than of costumes, which might appear outmoded. Indeed, the social sciences have show that fashion is a portmanteau word, a point of entry towards understanding the phenomenon of clothing: the history and culture of looks, the economics and sociology of appearances, the technical and industrial systems of dress. A new wave has begun for both research and museums. The passion that fashion elicits in the cultural sphere, with the attention scholars bring to the subject, has contributed to revisiting the approach of even the oldest collections and to stimulating the museological reflection this typology of museum objects that has attained an increasingly significant place within the heritage sector. Museum institutions connected with fashion are far from acquiring only contemporary pieces. The aim of this project is to generate a museology of the vestimentary heritage, thanks to research undertaken dealing with the fundamental characteristics of this phenomenon, a kind of inventory of the museum landscape, and understanding the future prospects of these collections. From the conditions under which the fashion museums emerged, this study seeks to establish a new category of knowledge about the cultural history of clothing: its genesis as heritage and its trajectory as a fitting set of objects for a museum context. On a theoretical level, this dissertation is concerned with the processes of “herigatization” and “musealization, ” essentially those processes by which a type of object becomes part of heritage and of museums. With the goal of explaining these processes, I have therefore conceived of an analytical matrix that brings together the observations of numerous researchers in museum studies and museology. Thus, this project’s theoretical framing has been refined by elaborating the concept of “regimes of museality, ” derived from French historian François Hartog’s notion “regimes of historicity, ” and the concept of “regimes of authenticity, ” adapted from Quebec historian Lucie K. Morisset. These concepts provide the possibility for determining the modalities, logic, and dynamics of the museological phenomenon. This research is based on a crossover study of French and Quebec institutions that form the relevant population: les Musées de la civilisation (Museums of Civilization) in Quebec City, Canada; le Musée des civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) in Marseille, France; the Cité internationale de la dentelle et de la mode (International Center for Lace and Fashion) in Calais, France; and the Musée de la mode (Fashion Museum) in Montreal, Canada. A microeconomic examination of the emergence and development of the dress collections at these museums clarifies four cycles at the macroeconomic level of investment of meaning, discursive construction, and elaboration of museum practices specific to vestimentary heritage… Four regimes of museality.

Full textThe growing popularity of the ecotourism industry in marine environments raises questions about its potential effects on animal populations. This project aimed at assessing these effects over the St. Lawrence harbour seals breeding colony of Petit-Gaspé. The study of short-term responses revealed that a reduction in the approach distance, increased noise or agitation, and to a lesser extent, speed of the disturbance source, increased the intensity of anti-predatory behaviour observed, and also that the pups were more sensitive to disturbance than older seals. The study of the colony daily activity budget also revealed a decrease in the time spent resting during periods of heavy touristic traffic. Moreover, the touristic affluence did not change the use of the haul-out to the spatio-temporal scale considered. This level of disturbance could affect the targeted harbour seals colonies and requires conservation measures to limit those impacts.

Full textMany bird species breeding in North America require long term tracking because of their unknown or declining population status. Of those, an important proportion is represented by species associated with open habitats. Open habitats are created every year by clear-cutting in boreal forest but they have been decreasing since last two decades in deciduous and mixed forests of Eastern North America. Due to the important media coverage with conservation NGOs accusing clear-cutting and other types of timber harvest for the loss of old forest and associated species, perception of perturbation of forest made by man is mostly negative. However, clear-cuts, as open habitats, may be important to wildlife. To understand their conservation value, it is necessary to better understand their use by wildlife. The present study focused on a species dependent on open areas, Wilson’s Warbler (Wilsonia pusilla). Populations of this species have been declining importantly since the last 40 years. We evaluated species occurrence in 43 alder sites and 90 clear-cut sites, at the Forêt Montmorency, Québec. We also measured 5 physical traits of captured males (weight, rectrix length, beak length, cap length and wing length) in order to establish if there is a difference between birds found in the two different habitats. Finally, we evaluated which factors of the landscape affected the occurrence of bird in a site, at four different radii (50, 100, 200 and 400 m). We found an equal proportion of Wilson’s Warbler in both habitats and no phenotypic difference was found. Percentage of open area around site was strongly associated with the presence of Wilson’s Warblers, at each radius. Presence of patchy alder and percentage of regeneration between 2 and 4 m high were also associated with the species’ occurrence. Those results throw new light on the habitat of Wilson’s Warblers and highlight the potential role of clear-cuts for the maintenance of its populations. However, the role of clear-cuts will need to addressed with data on reproduction.

Full textThis study examines the performance of historical characters as a form of heritage interpretation in museums and historic sites. We focus on Dramamuse, the former theatre company of the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, as well as at the Animation Department of the Plains of Abraham, a historical site in Quebec City. We examine the practical dimension of their different performances by describing and analyzing the elements needed to engage with the visitors. We investigate the roles of these elements, their relevance, their advantages and disadvantages, etc. Our results show that a combination of three pillars, namely the character, the actor and the tools used by the « character-actor », create a cognitive, emotional and sensorial experience of heritage for the visitors. These results shed light on a rich and developing practice in heritage interpretation.

Full textThis master thesis is an analysis of the current specific actions on representation and interaction taken in contemporary ethnographic museums. The aim is to highlight museology pathways used to represent local Indigenous culture and to explore how the public is involved with and relates to these specific discourses on heritage. Special attention will be devoted to the study of the shift of museums from authoritative places of education to socially inclusive spaces. The mission of heritage professionals in terms of representation will be analysed, as well as their work on the notions of accessibility and involvement for and with the public. The Huron-Wendat Museum in Wendake, Québec, serves to investigate these museum practices. Drawing from thorough fieldwork and extensive secondary literature, this master thesis will further probe the prevailing notions of identity, continuity and unity of the new museology in a postcolonial context.
