Bucciantini, Alima Maria. "Museum, exhibition, object : artefactual narratives and their dilemmas in the National Museum of Scotland." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/7983.

Full text
Abstract:
National museums are spaces where stories of the past are told through the display and interpretation of material culture. The narratives that are created in this way reflect the ways in which the nation wants to be seen at that particular moment, and are often embedded in the larger political and social contexts of that time. This thesis looks at the National Museum of Scotland as having three levels of narrative: that of the museum as a physical space and national institution, that of the temporary exhibitions it hosts and develops, and, most crucially, as a collection of important and iconic objects. By tracing the artefacts that were given a central role in various exhibitions over the life of the museum, the narratives of nation and history which were most valuable at that time can be uncovered. The two permanent and five temporary exhibitions profiled in this work act as windows into the life of the museum, and the goals and challenges it had at that moment. The thesis begins with the story of museum history in Scotland, from the 1780 formation of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland to the debates in the 1990s about the potential form and contents of a new Museum of Scotland. From there we look at two temporary exhibitions in the 1980s which inspired the Museum of Scotland, before examining some more recent temporary and touring exhibitions – a pair that came to Scotland from Russia, and one that left Edinburgh to travel among other Scottish museums. The final chapter returns to the realm of what it means to have a national museum, as it investigates the 2006 rebranding that changed the Museum of Scotland into the National Museum of Scotland, and what the new nomenclature signals about the objects and narratives within. All together, this work is both the story of a particular national museum and an investigation into the ways in which national history is continuously made and remade for the public through the display of artefacts from the past.

Eames, Brittany A. "Uncommon historical object appraisals| appraising the south street museum collection." Thesis, Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1554301.

Full text
Abstract:

As the global pattern of severe weather intensifies, complex disaster-related appraisals are becoming increasingly more common. Post-disaster appraisals are particularly challenging due to several key factors: (1) the large number of objects in each appraisal, (2) the diversity of the objects and (3) the limited time frame for completion. Due to these complicating factors the methodologies that were once central to the structure of valuation are crumbling and new metrics are being formed to accommodate these labyrinthine post-disaster jobs. By way of a single case study undertaken post-Hurricane Sandy, this document explores the process of redesigning appraisal methodologies, of approaching uncommon historical objects found often in these now less exceptional cases, of identifying "value signifiers" for those objects and ultimately of reimagining the very core of what it means to appraise fine art.

Walker, Alexandra. "Beyond the Looking Glass : object handling and access to museum collections." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2013. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/374734/.

Full text
Abstract:
For many, a museum visit may consist of gazing at objects locked away in glass a cabinet accompanied by signs forbidding touch, and complex and often confusing text panels. But what message does this present to the visiting public? How can the public connect with museums and their collections if objects are beyond their reach? Why is handling reserved for the museum elite and not the general public? The value of touch and object handling in museums is a growing area of research, but also one that is not yet fully understood. Despite our range of senses with which we experience the world around us, museums traditionally rely on the visual as the principle means of communicating information about the past. However museums are increasingly required to prove their worth and value in society by becoming more accessible, not just in terms of audience but by opening up their stored collections, and government agenda is pushing for culture to feature in the everyday lives of the public. This research pulls apart the hierarchical nature of touch in the museum, demonstrating the benefits of a “hands-on” approach to engaging with the past, investigating the problems and limitations associated with tactile experiences, and puts forward a toolkit for tactile access to collections. It suggests that handling museum collections, not only enhances our understanding of the past, but provides memorable and valuable experiences that will remain with an individual for life.

Elizondo, Kristina Kay. "The Museum is the Object: An Action Research Study in How Critical Theory Curriculum Influences Student Understanding of an Art Museum." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc955032/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this action research study was to determine how a critical theory curriculum implemented in a college-level art appreciation course impacted student understanding of an encyclopedic art museum. A critical theory-based curriculum unit was designed and implemented, and students were given assignments to assess their learning. The most significant assignment centered on a self-guided student visit to the art museum in which students made detailed observations of the museum spaces and responded to articles critiquing museum practices. These documents, together with class discussions and my personal observations, were analyzed and described in this research study. The data revealed that students had a high level of regard for and interest in art museums, were capable of understanding how history and context influences museum practices, detected multiple instances of bias in art museum galleries, and self-reported high levels of cognition and empowerment based on their experiences. The data suggested that, in college students, both art appreciation instructors and museum educators have an ideal audience in which to facilitate sustained, higher-level, critical theory-based museum learning experiences.

Abstract:
Archaeologists are increasingly asked to justify the meaning and importance of their work to the public through the development of outreach and education programs. As repositories of culture, museums provide a perfect medium to assist in the promotion of an archaeology that is both relevant and engaging. Many archaeology education programs advocate “doing” or “learning about” archaeology, placing strict emphasis upon stewardship messages and the dangers associated with looting and site destruction. While this approach to teaching makes excellent sense from a modern cultural resource management perspective, it fails to portray archaeology education in any other light. Archaeology exhibits particular relevance within public schools, whose population holds one of the discipline’s largest, most inclusive captive audiences. This paper explores the most effective strategies for teaching archaeology to third and fourth grade students in the museum. I assess student level of engagement with object- and scientific skills-based activities, and results of a pilot study conducted at the Utah State University Museum of Anthropology indicate a need for more object-based curricula within archaeology education programs. Detailed consideration of archaeology’s relevance to skills developed within the social, physical, and life sciences highlights areas of focus and improvement in current and future programs.

Abstract:
The aim of the master thesis is to provide visitors of various types of objects - typically galleries, museums, etc. with additional information about exhibited objects with emphasis on visual display in augmented reality. It includes an analysis of already existing solutions, design and implementation of the entire system needed for deployment. From the point of view of the content creator (administrator), the system represents a complex solution enabling the creation of an interactive walk - scanning 3D objects, scanning 2D objects and adding content to the given objects. On the other hand, the tool for visitors (users) who are part of an interactive walk, provides additional information about objects primarily located near the user, which are automatically detected by the camera on the mobile phone. Solution includes augmented reality, which is implemented using ARKit technology, so the final application is built on the iOS platform. The work addresses the issue of detection of 3D objects and their subsequent recognition, along with the way to work with this information, how to store it and then use it for purposes of this thesis. In the final solution, emphasis is placed on the simplicity of the usage (guide marks, hints...) and overall user experience.

Archibald, Joanna. "Museums and music : an argument in favour of a broader evaluation of the object-based nature of music collections in the United Kingdom." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/15131.

Full text
Abstract:
This work seeks to show that the experience gained through music in its practical and aural sense is not represented adequately in music museums because of the necessarily object-based nature of most museum displays. Restricting the analysis to museums - or their equivalent - in the United Kingdom, a representative cross-section of different museums containing music collections is studied. This material is discussed in terms of type, display, interpretation and visitors. Music's problematic standing in museums is subsequently ascribed to its essentially non-visual and transitory nature. A further series of case study museums is then examined - dealing with Film, Theatre, Sport and 'Conceptual Experiences' as subjects - each of which share elements of music's difficulty in presentation. From this, it is shown that many of these difficulties may be overcome; and some of the solutions may be adapted for musical material in both a practical and ideological sense.

Nikolaou, Polina. "The diaspora of Cypriot antiquities and the British Museum, 1860-1900." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14988.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the invention of Cyprus’ ancient history through the diaspora of Cypriot antiquities in the latter half of nineteenth century and the role of the modern museum in it (1860-1900). It maps the movement of the objects from their excavation sites, to their circulation in metropolitan museums and, finally to their display in museum galleries. In doing so this thesis explores the emergence of archaeology as a field-based discipline in the broader colonial, imperial and geopolitical context. The research of this project was conducted mainly at the Cyprus State Archives, the Greek and Roman Departmental Archives (British Museum), Dartmouth College Archives (NH). The first part of the thesis provides the theoretical framework in which this research is situated. Chapter 1 introduces the project, its research questions, its research questions and outcomes. Chapter 2 discusses the literature providing the main concepts that formed the arguments of this thesis. Chapter 3 contextualizes the diaspora of Cypriot antiquities within the broader history of archaeology and Chapter 4 overviews the methodology followed and the archival sources that were used for this project. The second part consists of my empirical work and maps the diaspora of the antiquities. It is thematically divided in three chapters. Chapter 5, Law, looks at the colonial and legal context of the excavation and exportation of the objects. Chapter 6, Excavation, discusses the every-day conduct of Cypriot archaeology in the field. Chapter 7, Circulation, examines the practices of collecting Cypriot antiquities, their exportation and circulation in metropolitan museums, and their display in museums (particularly in the British Museum). Chapter 8 brings the thesis into a conclusion and highlights the main findings and arguments of this project. The thesis explores the production, circulation and display of scientific knowledge regarding the ancient past of Cyprus by following the antiquities in their various forms (texts, impressions, photographs, objects). By following the objects’ social lives it addresses the issues of the circulation of scientific knowledge, of the criteria for asserting its authenticity and credibility and of the local/global nature of archaeological science. It will demonstrate that the methodological tenor of writing the objects’ biographies links the different scales of science’s making and illuminates its hidden stories, such as the practicalities of collecting in the field.

Stiles, Emily. "Narrative, object, witness : the story of the Holocaust as told by the Imperial War Museum, London." Thesis, University of Winchester, 2016. http://repository.winchester.ac.uk/808/.

Full text
Abstract:
On June 7, 2000, the Holocaust’s position as an official part of British history and memory became solidified with the opening of a permanent Holocaust exhibition within London’s Imperial War Museum. This important national museum embodies Britain's cultural memory of war, of which the Holocaust has become a central part. Situated within debates of museology and memory, this thesis offers a compelling case study on the performative role of the museum in the construction of an official Holocaust memory within Britain and its relationship to national identity. While the Holocaust has become a ‘moral touchstone’ of contemporary society it seems urgent we raise questions of not only why we remember the Holocaust, but what, exactly, it is we are remembering. The oft cited dictum to 'never forget' requires remembrance of the Holocaust to serve a purpose; so that events of Nazi Europe may never be repeated. This ambition has proven hollow, yet countries invest millions of pounds in official Holocaust remembrance, commemoration and education. What purpose does the Holocaust serve in twenty-first century Britain? Questions of Holocaust narrative, material culture and testimony dominate the study, underpinned through wider concepts of history, memory, identity and museology in a British context. Using the Imperial War Museum as a case study, this thesis presents a challenge to the place of the Holocaust within British memory of war and questions how this limiting framework affects the way the Holocaust is remembered and understood throughout British society more broadly. Each chapter focuses on a specific aspect of the Holocaust exhibition and its display. A history of the exhibition provides detail on how and why the Holocaust became a central theme for the Imperial War Museum, while a study of the photographic, object and testimony displays in each dedicated chapter draws conclusions on how the Holocaust is shaped within this specific context. The relationship between the exhibition displays and Holocaust education more broadly throughout Britain is explored in detail in the final chapter of the thesis. Beyond the Imperial War Museum, this study points towards the future of Holocaust memory in Britain with an aim to highlight a limited understanding of the wider context of Britain and the Holocaust within popular narratives. How Britain connects to Holocaust history and memory remains central to this research, but it also considers how Britain could connect in more meaningful ways beyond learning the 'lessons' of the Holocaust.

Solway, Rob. "Developing a psychological understanding of museum object handling groups in older adult mental health inpatient care." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2014. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/12882/.

Full text
Abstract:
An emerging body of evidence indicates that museum object handling sessions offer short term benefits to people in health care settings. The aim of this study was to further understanding of the psychological and social aspects of a museum object handling group held in an older adult mental health setting. Older adults (N = 42) from a psychiatric inpatient ward with a diagnosis of depression or anxiety took part in one or more of a series of nine museum object handling group sessions. Audio recordings of the sessions were subjected to a thematic analysis. Five main themes were identified: “responding to object focused questions”, “learning about objects and from each other”, “enjoyment, enrichment through touch and privilege”, “memories, personal associations and identity” and “imagination and storytelling”. The first four themes were congruent with existing literature associated with positive wellbeing and engagement outcomes. Imagination and storytelling was a new finding in the group context. This study offers preliminary support for museum object handling group sessions as an intervention in this healthcare setting. There may be potential to develop the therapeutic aspects of the sessions. Further research is recommended and areas for enquiry discussed.

Hunt, Aimee D. "Beyond the Single Story: How Analog Hypertext Facilitates Representation of Multiple Critical Perspectives in an Art Museum Object Study Gallery." VCU Scholars Compass, 2016. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4642.

Full text
Abstract:
This project utilized a form of arts based educational research described as analog hypertext to develop interpretative material representing multiple critical, theoretical, and disciplinary perspectives on objects in a university art museum’s object study gallery. Drawing on scholars’ recommendations for postcolonial interpretation of non-Western art, the project created a web of information, which simultaneously revealed and critiqued the underlying ideologies and power structures shaping the museum’s display in an effort to change existing interpretive practice. The project developed five color-coded thematic self-guided tours—art as commodity, spiritual practice, technology and cultural evolutionism, mortuary rituals, and postcolonial perspectives—presented to the public as an interpretive exhibition invited visitors’ contributions. This paper explores how the analog hypertext functions as both a research tool and a content delivery device for the representation of multiple critical perspectives, fostering interdisciplinary perspectives and visitor meaning-making in the process.

Full text
Abstract:
As an academic discipline, the earth sciences generate, use, and retain vast quantities of objects. This ‘material archive’ exists, first and foremost, as a functional scientific resource; the objects that it contains were never intended to express culture. Since the earth sciences rely heavily on claims that its objects of study remain the same as they were in nature, it follows that the specimens contained in university earth science collections are treated as objective scientific evidence. In this sense, the material that is collected, used and retained by earth scientists may appear to be devoid of culture – passive, inert and neutral. This thesis sets out to challenge these assumptions by treating university earth science objects and collections as material culture. In material culture studies, geological materials appear in a variety of different forms and contexts, however, such work has tended to focus on either their occurrence in the landscape, or their use as raw materials from which objects are made. Thus, while the earth sciences provide an abundant source of ‘material’ for material culture studies, rarely (if at all) do they seem to provide the culture. Furthermore, while the treatment of ‘natural’ objects as cultural artefacts has become increasingly popular in museology, much of this work has concentrated on the processes and practices that are enacted on these things in museums. Museology has therefore tended to consider these things in what effectively corresponds to their retirement, meaning that with few exceptions, little attention has been paid to their active use as functional scientific objects. This research explores the implications of treating university earth science objects and collections as material culture through the empirical investigation of contemporary object-related practices in UK earth science departments and university museums. As such this thesis addresses questions surrounding the relevance of existing theories and methods, in both material culture studies and museology, for exploring natural scientific objects and collections. These questions are approached through four thematic chapters concerned with the coming into being of earth science objects, their transformation into collection items, their functions, and their mobility.

Abstract:
In this thesis I examine how Army Museum in Stockholm, Sweden, exhibits the heritage of war in their permanent exhibition “War and Peace”. The museum is a governmental activity. The aim of my research is to study how the Army Museum employees relate to the representation of war and how this is expressed in the permanent exhibition. I have chosen to focus on the representation of war at the permanent exhibition and therefore chosen only to interview people who have worked on the design of the permanent exhibition. No visitors were interviewed because it was how the staff relates to the representation of war that I wanted to study. I use qualitative methods in my study using observations at the study site and interviews with the museum employees. I'm using a museum and cultural scientific perspective in my study, which is the study of how society sorts out, preserves and convey cultural heritage. Researchers who have figured as my theoretical counsellors include; Sharon MacDonald, Gregory Ashworth, Laurajane Smith. All those researchers mean that the view and adaption of “dark heritage” are influenced by political values, time and how it is presented in the exhibit. The study comes to the conclusion that the Army Museum wants to convey that war is horrible, especial for those who live with it in their everyday life. Army Museum exhibits war in such a way that it is not glorified. Instead they have chosen to problematize war and let its horrors be presented. The museum employees think it is important to encourage visitors to understand that war often goes hand in hand with death and suffering. The staffs do not think any item, so far, has been difficult to exhibit. This thesis is a two years master’s thesis in Museum and Cultural heritage.

De, Villiers Olga-Marie. "The object of experience : a phenomenological approach to exhibition space in the Ditsong : National Museum of Natural History." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/30100.

Full text
Abstract:
The study will investigate the creation and manipulation of experience in interior space. With phenomenology as the premise, the object becomes secondary to the experience. The site will be an unutilized vault structure on the Ditsong: National Museum of Natural History grounds in Pretoria. To give expression to experience, the program chosen is an experience based exhibition that adds onto the current exhibition at the museum. The exhibition will change annually to ensure variation for yearly visitors. To facilitate changing the exhibition, the spaces will be designed with the senses as base layers. Each space will be experienced primarily through one of the senses, so that the user becomes more aware of the specific sense in that space. The exhibition that layers onto the sense layer can focus on that sense to convey facts about the subject. The chosen subject for the exhibition detailed in the project is the insect collection. The purpose of the exhibition will be to show how insects use their senses. The senses of the insect will layer onto the basis layer of human senses. Because everything we experience is through our own senses, we can only get an idea of what the insect would experience. There will always be the interlayer of our own senses.

"Designing for dream spaces : exploring digitally enhanced space for children's engagement with museum objects." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/304817.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an investigation into the potential of digitally enhanced exhibition spaces to foster the engagement of children within family groups with museum objects on display, i.e. where physical contact is prohibited. The main focus is on the influence of digital enhancement on visitors’ engagement with artefacts and not on the digital elements themselves. This study has taken the mixed methods approach. It combines ethnographicallyinformed field studies with a design intervention within an overarching methodology of action research. In the review of literature, research from multiple fields including museum studies, interaction design and play research was brought together and examined from the perspective of exhibition design. This led to the development of the Social Dream Spaces Model. This model, which describes how visitors engage with museum objects, was used as the basis for a design intervention aimed at enhancing children’s engagement with exhibited artefacts. In-gallery participant observations were carried out in Bantock House Museum, Wolverhampton. Insights, based on data analysed from the perspective of the Social Dream Spaces Model, were used to develop a prototype of a digitally enhanced space, which was implemented into the existing exhibition. Data gathered in observations before and after the design intervention were compared in order to determine any changes in visitors’ responses to the exhibition. This study demonstrates the benefit of using the Social Dream Spaces Model for designing digitally enhanced exhibition spaces that promote children’s engagement with artefacts and social contact around them. The findings also confirm that designing subtle and nonintrusive digital enhancement can facilitate intergenerational interaction in exhibition spaces.

Abstract:
Introduction: This thesis investigates the relationships that curators have with the collections they oversee. The aim of the study is to learn how this relationship shapes the curators, the objects, and the storeroom itself. An additional purpose is to see whether this relationship creates and maintains a hierarchy of objects in the storerooms. Method: Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with curators working in Sweden at Nationalmuseum of Sweden, Army Museum, Swedish Museum of Performing Arts, Museum Gustavianum, The Museum of Evolution, The Jewish Museum and Skansen. The interviews were tape recorded and the transcripts composed the data for the analysis. Analysis: A qualitative content analysis was carried out on the data. Object-love and material punctum were used as the study’s theoretical and analytical framework. Including three concepts defined by the author as formal-, informal-, and personal- object hierarchies. Results: Personal and emotional relationships to the collections did exist. They were intertwined with the professional relationship and formed a unique love called object-love. A love that defined and regulated both the personal and professional sides of the relationship. A combination of knowledge, intimacy, interest, and time were key factors for the formation of an emotional bond to the objects. The personal relationships further helped create personal and informal object hierarchies in the storerooms but were not exclusively responsible for them. Other factors such as formal object hierarchies and old hierarchical systems contributed to their existence. Conclusion: Object-love is a vital part of a successful curatorship, as it drives the curators to do a good job and go the extra mile. Since prioritization is a big part of the curator’s everyday work, informal and personal object hierarchies become a necessity in the storerooms. Because of object-love these hierarchies fall in line with the museums broader mission. This is a two years master's thesis in museum and heritage studies

Abstract:
This research is initiated through an examination and mapping of the contemporary ceramics discourse within the United Kingdom and is situated from 1994 until the completion of my PhD study in 2014. This analysis of the practical and theoretical fields of ceramics practice provides a framework within which my own education and development as a practising artist can be measured and authenticated whilst providing a critical overview of the changing critical landscape of ceramics discourse over the last twenty years. Ceramics as an expanded field is evidenced through case studies of artist peers; and interviews with key critics, writers and curators. It introduces the positions of the post-studio and post-disciplinary practitioner as paradigms of practice that acknowledge an artists’ capacity to operate within the field of ceramics, utilising a multitude of approaches, media and mediums. The practical element of the research is developed outside of the studio within the context of the museum and its collection. This is embodied by employing a bricolage methodology that identifies the artist as an individual who ‘works between and within competing and overlapping perspectives and paradigms’ (Denzin and Lincoln, 1994). The resulting practical outputs of Last Supper at the Glynn Vivian, 12 People 12 Objects and Teatime at the Museum created through the mediums of film and photography are presented as both completed works and constituent elements of contemporary ceramics practice. They offer an original contribution to knowledge by presenting an adjustable model of engagement with the ceramic object and collection implemented by the post-disciplinary, post-studio practitioner in collaboration with the institution and curator.

Abstract:
This dissertation defines the main lines to understand a museum – the Museum of Luz – performing a overview of his ten years of activity. In this route, we reveal the singularities of the museum, in the context of a recreated village and a displaced community - due submersion by Alqueva dam (Alentejo, Portugal). We highlight the museum processes and the meanings of objects, as tangible representation of the past, claimed in the production of memory and the reconstruction of the place. Revealing the museological practices, we propose a possible reformulation of mission’smuseum. This proposal is based on the principle that the Museum of Luz is a society museum, whose activity is not focused exclusively on their collections and, therefore, it mission must be renewed.

Cummings, Catherine. "Collecting en route : an exploration of the ethnographic collection of Gertrude Emily Benham." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3138.

Abstract:
In the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century the collecting of objects from colonized countries and their subsequent display in western museums was widespread throughout Western Europe. How and why these collections were made, the processes of collection, and by whom, has only recently begun to be addressed. This thesis is an exploration of the ethnographic collection of Gertrude Emily Benham (1867-1938) who made eight voyages independently around the world from 1904 until 1938, during which time she amassed a collection of approximately eight hundred objects, which she donated to Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery in 1935. It considers how and why she formed her collection and how, as a an amateur and marginalised collector, she can be located within discourses on ethnographic collecting. The thesis is organised by geographical regions in order to address the different contact zones of colonialism as well as to contextualise Benham within the cultural milieu in which she collected and the global collection of objects that she collected. An interdisciplinary perspective was employed to create a dialogue between anthropology, geography, museology, postcolonial and feminist theory to address the complex issues of colonial collecting. Benham is located within a range of intersecting histories: colonialism, travel, collecting, and gender. This study is the first in-depth examination of Benham as a collector and adds to the knowledge and understanding of Benham and her collection in Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery. It contributes to the discourse on ethnographic collectors and collecting and in doing so it acknowledges the agency and contribution of marginal collectors to resituate them as a central and intrinsic component in the formation of the ethnographic museum. In addition, and central to this, is the agency and role of indigenous people in forming ethnographic collections. The thesis offers a foundation for further research into women ethnographic collectors and a more nuanced and inclusive account of ethnographic collecting.

Abstract:
In seeking to create a richer learning environment in a junior high art classroom, the author develops a theory of presence. Closely connected to object-centered learning, a theory of presence in the art classroom places value on students being in the presence of, interacting with, and responding to artworks, artists, and other individuals and objects from the visual arts community. The author then describes how curricular plans are influenced by this theory of presence. Using an action research methodology, the author engages in the spiral process of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting on curriculum that explores the possibilities of connecting students with objects, artifacts, and people that privilege physical interaction and presence. Guest artist visits, utilizing a local art museum, and other methods are explored as possibilities for this to be achieved.

Abstract:
The present study aimed to analyze the general uses of the terms documentation, document and object within the context of the museums field. This context was characterized in two universes: the theoretical, represented by selected bibliography taken from Documentation, Information Science and Museology, and practical, consisting of two standards of museums area. The objectives of working with these two universes were to map, characterize and discuss ideas, approaches and tensions between the worlds of theory and practice, without the intention of getting any unique definition. In order to get those objectives, an exploratory, descriptive, comparative methodology was chosen, that also drew upon elements of historical research. As regards procedures, bibliographic record and use of terminological data collection form for the term documentation were used, and this last one was only to systematize meanings and not to elaborate a unified definition. The comparison between the uses of the terms being studied point out their polysemy and ambiguity and, in the case of term documentation, the idea of its connection with the control of the collections still remains. Results of this study also reinforce this diversity of meanings strongly influences what is done in professional practice. Furthermore, it consolidates different traditions and ways of conceiving documentation and objects-documents in museums - which should be increasingly researched to reinforce ties and review concepts and procedures. Finally, it is worth noting that the purpose of this study was to explore the terminological differences, so inherent to the universe of museums, and raise the issue of how to deal with them and from them.

The museum documentation works with treatment of collections information, from the registration until the dissemination of information, leaving it to operate a system that attends the information demand of its public. In this regard, we point out the need for the use of languages documented in the construction of systems documentary museum, offering to maximize the recovery and use of information. Some peculiarities of the documentation in museums must be met in order to justify the lack of standardization in the record of collections. Within the museum documentation, the research focuses on the cataloging of objects in museums as action mediator between the public and the body, helping in knowledge construction and preservation of memory. Thus, there was a study of the Museu Paulista aiming to subsidize the general documentary procedures and practices of museums with reflections from the Theory of Documentation. As to the specific objectives intended to reflect on the role of documentation in the museum informacional context and observe how the descriptive representation is used in the Museu Paulista.

Abstract:
For rare book collections, a considerable challenge is involved in evaluating collection materials in terms of their inherent value, which includes the textual and intangible information the materials provide for the collection's users. Preservation management in rare book collections is a complex and costly process. As digitization and other technological advances in surrogate technology have provided new forms representation, new dilemmas in weighing the rare book's inherently valuable characteristics against the possibly lesser financial costs of surrogates have arisen. No model has been in wide use to guide preservation management decisions. An initial iteration of such a model is developed, based on a Delphi-like iterative questioning of a group of experts in the field of rare books. The results are used to synthesize a preservation management framework for rare book collections, and a small-scale test of the framework has been completed through two independent analyses of five rare books in a functioning collection. Utilizing a standardized template for making preservation decisions offers a variety of benefits. Preservation decisions may include prioritizing action upon the authentic objects, or developing and maintaining surrogates in lieu of retaining costly original collection materials. The framework constructed in this study provides a method for reducing the subjectivity of preservation decision-making and facilitating the development of a standard of practice for preservation management within rare book collections.

Abstract:
Throughout history, objects of art have been damaged and sometimes destroyed in earthquakes. Even though the importance of providing seismically adequate design for nonstructural components has received attention over the past decade, art objects in museums, either on display or in storage, require further research. The research reported in this study was undertaken to investigate the seismic vulnerability of art objects. Data for this research was gathered from three museums in Montreal.
The seismic behaviour of three unrestrained display cases, storage shelves, and a 6m long dinosaur skeleton model structure was investigated according to the seismic hazard for Montreal and representative museum floor motions were simulated for that purpose. Particular attention was paid to the support conditions, the effects of modified floor surface conditions, the sliding and rocking response of unrestrained display cases, the location (floor elevation) of the display case and/or storage shelves, art object mass, and the dynamic properties of the display cases/storage shelves. The seismic vulnerability of art objects was evaluated based on the seismic response of the display cases/storage shelves at the level of art object display. The display cases were investigated experimentally using shake table testing. Computer analyses were used to simulate the seismic behaviour of storage shelves, and the seismic sensitivity of the dinosaur structure was determined via free vibration acceleration measurements. The floor contact conditions and floor elevation had a crucial effect on the unrestrained display cases, causing them to slide or rock vigorously. The distribution of content mass had a large impact on the response of the shelving system. As a result of experimental and analytical analyses, recommendations and/or simple mitigation techniques are provided to reduce the seismic vulnerability of objects of art.

Abstract:
This multi-case study creates a better understanding of the relationship between four museum educators' personal theories of teaching and their practice in university museums. The question that frames this study is, "How, in a university museum setting, do museum educators' personal theories of teaching relate to their educational practices?" The aim was to produce an account of museum educators' personal theories and practices in university museums and interrogate what factors may influence the relationship between the two. While there is some literature about the personal theories and practices of museum educators, no studies have been found that examine museum educators working in university museums in the United Kingdom. This study addresses this gap by exploring four museum educators' personal theories and practices in three museum educational programmes in two university museums in a university city. This study is positioned within a qualitative tradition. Data for this study was collected using semi-structured interviews and observations. In total four pre-interviews, 24 observations and 24 post-interviews were conducted with four museum educators in two university museums in a UK city. Thematic analysis was the approach taken for the analysis of each case study. Findings in relation to the museum educators' personal theories suggest that there were important similarities in the museum educators' personal theories. All the museum educators' personal theories consisted of elements relative to knowledge, learning and learners, and the facilitation of a positive learning environment. The museum educators' personal theories of teaching relative to the nature of knowledge, learning and learners, varied per the discipline of the museum they taught in. It was found that personal theories were influenced by the museum educators' shared background as former school teachers and, for some, their accumulated experience teaching in university museum settings. Thus, they tend to foster educational settings with characteristics typical of formal learning environments. The key finding in relation to the research question of this study, is that in a university museum setting, the personal theories of teaching of the museum educators were often aligned with their practices; in some cases, they were not. Whether the museum educators could align their practices with their personal theories of teaching appeared to depend on the sociocultural context they worked in. Despite, as previously noted, similarities in the four personal theories of teaching (i.e. relative to knowledge, learning and learners and the facilitation of a positive learning environment), there were differences in how these were translated into practice by each museum educator. This research contributes to the field of museum education by: i) enhancing our understanding of museum educators' personal theories of teaching and practice in university museums; ii) providing fresh insights into the relationship between the personal theories of teaching and practice of museum educators working in university museums and; iii) adding to our understanding of the breadth of learning environments in museum education. The findings of this study are significant because they enrich the empirical knowledge and understanding of museum educator teaching in university museums. This study provides insights that may benefit the training and professional development of museum educators in university museums.

This research aims to investigate the configuration of suitable places for teaching science in the early twentieth century, more specifically, how this process occurred at Colégio Marista Arquidiocesano de São Paulo, between the years 1908 and 1940. Both elementary and middle-school levels were analyzed and it was acknowledged that they had very different trajectories. However, these segments had in common the concern with the development of the senses of both children and young adults. In middleschool level the main concern can be related to science education and practical proposals. On the other hand, the elementary school was based on intuitive teaching. The observation, practical work and experimentation have been included among the dally activities of the school and should take place in appropriate locations, where it would be possible to keep teaching materials, as well as to propose practical situations with students. In this context, there were the establishment of school museums, cabinets and laboratories inside the school. These development were not only an indication that Colégio Marista Arquidiocesano de São Paulo followed the government guidelines but also the proof that they were a symbol of modern pedagogy. It could also be considered as advertising for the school

Abstract:
The work is based on the study of medieval objects with inscriptions (Vth-XVth centuries), recollected from Girona city museums where they are exhibited today: Treasure Museum of the Cathedral, Diocesan Art Museum, Jews History Museum, City History Museum, and Archeological Museum. The methodological purpose comes from a literary viewpoint applied to the museal framework, with epigraphic items viewed as “material text” converting the traditional figure of text reader into a visitor-reader. We also propose transposing the Gérard Genette’s paratext concept onto objects, with emergence of notions of “museal peritext” and “bibliographic epitext”. Each inscription is examined through connections with the other elements or with the temporal context of the object. The research was lead with museums archives files and bibliography from different frameworks as History and Philosophy of writing, Semiology, Semiotics, History and Catalan Art History. The thesis is divided into three parts: preliminary summary statement about writing in Middle Ages and the explanation of aims and methods of the study; then, the analysis of each piece with its inscription(s), some of which were unpublished or remain mysterious ; and at last a cross-sectional analysis, mixing various disciplinary areas (Communication studies, Museology, Literary analysis…), which shows multiplicity of receptions of epigraphic objects, and the importance of writing around them. It ends with transposing notions of advertising: the same cognitive processes identified in the current marketing theories were already at work in our medieval context, not with a commercial purpose here but in order to get adherence to values

Abstract:
The present study is aimed at building a referential framework that may contribute to the establishment of collections management methodologies concerning a specific category of objects - pre-electrical household utensils and appliances of industrial manufacture. The relevance of such objects lies in the role they played in a process of modernization and rationalization of the household which would culminate in the spread of electrical power for residential use throughout the 20th century. Thus, we present an outlook of the life cycles these products took part in, whether in the context of their production and mass consumption in the turn-of-the-century São Paulo - for which we investigate the advertisements published in this period - whether in the context of their posterior accessioning by museums. On the assumption that the acquisition of such objects by History museums reveals a trend linked to conceptual and methodological transformations that guide the fields of History and Museum Studies throughout the second half of the 20th century, we look into the collections of Museu Paulista and Museu da Casa Brasileira, analysing the history of these collections as well as the curatorial process they were subject to, aiming at the possibilities for research and development of this category of objects within the curatorial process of History museums.

Abstract:
*** Abstract - The urgency on building a school museum emerges from the need of preservation of an inheritance, which is plenty of objects and symbolic features, that has not been systematically preserved in our country. The aim of this work relies on the need of uncover the different messages that are compacted inside the objects through life documents. These objects represent a vast and tangible history, and even a memory, thus, it is very important and meaningful to preserve and collect them. The presentation of life documents beneath oral expression testimonies overflows the singular and individual version of memory since it is not build on a solitary way but it is generated within a culture in which the individual had been socialized. Thus, it is important to collect several testimonies, also based on other sources of information (scientific, technical and pedagogic informations, among others), in order to allow the construction to each object of a micro-history where the acceptable official memory is intersected with the one originated from the truthful life practice of each individual within its social group. These micro-histories allow a deeper knowledge of each object previously collected, when they are integrated on specific register cards. Not only is this knowledge composed of a physical and functional description, but it also enables a whole comprehension of the relationship between each object and its users.

Abstract: The museum is a unit of information that can provide various types of documentary support, such as the iconography, the three-dimensional and the bibliographic.

Abstract:
This study aimed to characterize the educational role of the objects / models in science museums. Thus, we consider in this study, the objects in the museum that were built with the intention of promoting relations of teaching and learning. We seek to point out the educational role of objects in museum exhibitions, as well as to characterize the potential of the object in expressing certain products and processes in learning to be presented in a museum exhibit. In addition, we sought to identify aspects related to the concepts and processes that subjects are able to perceive when observing the object in an exhibition. The methodological approach was based on the framework of qualitative research and was selected the Museum of Natural Sciences at the Catholic University of Minas Gerais. The choice of model of the skeleton of a giant sloth was because it is the object that by its size and position expographic draws the most attention. Moreover, it has an important role in the development of Biology and Paleontology studies, as well as meeting a wide range of important features, which made it suitable for this research. Museum professionals responsible for the production of models and makers of the exhibition were selected for interview. The five young people invited to participate in this study were 17 years old and currently enrolled in 2nd year of high school of a private school located in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil. We believe that choosing young people with the same level of schooling and affinities, of similar social levels and setting up friendship, ease social interaction, making the visit more fluid and natural. We took as reference the concepts of learning in museums, by some authors such as George Hein, Falk and Dierking, Hooper-Greenhill and Scott Paris. Even for theoretical research, we chose fields related to education and objects / models in museums, especially in science museums. To collect the survey data, we combine the use of multiple sources, in order to obtain the necessary information regarding both the pedagogical intentions of the object, i.e. the model of the skeleton of the giant sloth, exhibited in the museum chosen as the interaction of young people in relation to this same object. For data collection with young people the survey had three stages: before, during and after the museum visit. The steps were recorded on video and audio, including interviews. Based on these results, we articulated the data from the whole our eyes and look of the museum and analyzed this data from the two axes related to the dimensions of learning, the conceptual axis and the axis of procedure. We also analyze the interactions of each youth, with the object and the whole pedagogic exhibition, from learning these axes. We realize that the intentions of the pedagogical model were understood by mostly young visitors which evidence, from the elements that make up the axis of conceptual and procedural learning analyzed. The interactions with objects in museums promote the possibility of observation, description and express prior knowledge, to promote discussion, development and testing of hypotheses. They also promote imagination, prompting questions. However, with regard to the proper formation of scientific concepts, to think how to present the object, the texts and images in museums are fundamental.

Abstract:
Indeed, it is considered by several authors as the city of "beginnings", the cradle of the contemporary history of this territory that would later become the Republic of Cameroon. The history of this city is known through an abundant literature about it. However, the Cameroonian authorities and the people of the city have deemed it necessary to set up a museum dedicated to the country's maritime history. This is how the very first maritime museum in Douala was built in 1986. It was therefore part of a programme to preserve and enhance the cultural heritage and history of the Cameroonian coast in order to better understand it and know its evolution over the years. It is a place where the past and values of the people of Douala are safeguarded and studied, as well as communicated as signs to interpret absent facts. And so, as a vehicle for the transmission of cultural values, the Douala Maritime Museum, as part of this work, exalts cultural expression and brings Cameroon's maritime history to life. However, this museum has received very little research to document its objects and design a discourse that accompanies them. Especially since the staging of the history of the Cameroonian coast is not an easy thing. However, the people of this city should experience a certain satisfaction when visiting this place; even if museum culture is not yet really part of Cameroonian customs. It is with this in mind that we have focused our attention on this museum in order to participate in a real museum policy and in the enhancement of the heritage that abounds in the city of Douala.

Abstract:
The work is based on the study of medieval objects bearing inscriptions (Vth-XVth centuries), recollected from Girona city museums where they are exhibited today: Treasure Museum of the Cathedral, Diocesan Art Museum, Jews History Museum, City History Museum, and Archeological Museum. It ends with transposing notions of advertising: the same cognitive processes identified in the current marketing theories were already at work in our medieval context, not with a commercial purpose here but in order to get adherence to values.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores a shift in cultural memory theory and praxis that loosely coincides with the turn of the century. With Berlin as its focus, I trace this shift through three of its museum institutions (the Jewish Museum, the Masterplan Museumsinsel, and the Neues Museum). I specifically look at three aspects: their museum practices (how history is expressed), the main narratives embodied in their spaces (what history is being expressed), and the critical contexts in which they are embedded (what do these practices and narratives mean in the wider cultural context). Throughout, I develop the idea of a cultural memory that emphasizes how we use the past, or what we do with our cultural inheritance. This runs counter to the cultural memory that sees remembering as a categorical imperative ('never forget' or 'lest we forget'), a memory that is clearly embodied in Libeskind's Jewish Museum and is typified in critical work that either prioritizes trauma (Caruth, LaCapra) or stresses cultivating specific empathetic responses (Landsberg's 'prosthetic memory,' Hirsch's 'postmemory'). My cultural memory hypothesis fits within the general German field of Cultural Memory Studies, as typified in the work of Jan and Aleida Assmann. The outcome of thinking about memory as use, appropriation, and transformation of cultural inheritance is the characterization of the past as an analytical tool. This notion sits well amidst current work by Dekel and Arnold-de Simine who read museum/memorial spaces as facilitators of civic engagement. This new cultural memory can be found embodied in the architectural and curatorial framing of the Neues Museum, in its phenomenological approach to history, its narrative of fragmentary wholeness, as well as in its placing of the twentieth century in long narratives of historical continuity. These characteristics allow me to read the Neues Museum as an example of contemporary thinking about modernism, and thus as part of a discourse that looks to restore and transform crucial mythological tendencies.

Abstract:
Taking a problematic user experience with ubiquitous annotation as its point of departure, this thesis defines and explores the design space for Social Object Labels (SOLs), small interactive displays aiming to support users' in-situ engagement with digital annotations of physical objects and places by providing up-to-date information before, during and after interaction. While the concept of ubiquitous annotation has potential applications in a wide range of domains, the research focuses in particular on SOLs in a museum context, where they can support the institution's educational goals by engaging visitors in the interpretation of exhibits and providing a platform for public discourse to complement official interpretations provided on traditional object labels. The thesis defines and structures the design space for SOLs, investigates how they can support social interpretation in museums and develops empirically validated design recommendations. Reflecting the developmental character of the research, it employs Design Research as a methodological framework, which involves the iterative development and evaluation of design artefacts together with users and other stakeholders. The research identifies the particular characteristics of SOLs and structures their design space into ten high-level aspects, synthesised from taxonomies and heuristics for similar display concepts and complemented with aspects emerging from the iterative design and evaluation of prototypes. It presents findings from a survey exploring visitors' mental models, preferences and expectations of commenting in museums and translates them into requirements for SOLs. It reports on scenario-based design activities, expert interviews with museum professionals, formative user studies and co-design sessions, and two empirical evaluations of SOL prototypes in a gallery environment. Pulling together findings from these research activities it then formulates design recommendations for SOLs and supports them with related evidence and implementation examples. The main contributions are (i) to delineate and structure the design space for SOLs, which helps to ground SOLs in the literature and understand them as a distinct display concept with its own characteristics; (ii) to explore, for the first time, a visitor perspective on commenting in museums, which can inform research, development and policies on user-generated content in museums and the wider cultural heritage sector; (iii) to develop empirically validated design recommendations, which can inform future research and development into SOLs and related display concept. The thesis concludes by summarising findings in relation to its stated research questions, restating its contributions from ubiquitous computing, domain and methodology perspectives, and discussing open issues and future work.

Allsop, Jessica Lauren. "Curious objects and Victorian collectors : men, markets, museums." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14976.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the portrayal of gentleman collectors in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century literature, arguing that they often find themselves challenged and destabilised by their collections. The collecting depicted contrasts revealingly with the Enlightenment practices of classification, taxonomy, and commodification, associated with the growth of both the public museum and the market economy. The dominance of such practices was bound up with the way they promoted subject-object relations that defined and empowered masculine identity. In the Dialectic of Enlightenment Theodor W. Adorno and Max Horkheimer note that “[i]n the most general sense of progressive thought, the Enlightenment has always aimed at liberating men from fear and establishing their sovereignty” (3). That being so, this study explores how the drive to classify and commodify the material world found oppositional, fictional form in gothicly inflected texts depicting a fascinating but frightening world of unknowable, alien objects and abject, emasculated subjects. The study draws upon Fred Botting’s contention that gothic extremes are a reaction to the “framework” of “reductive and normalising limits of bourgeois morality and modes of production” (89). Examining novels and short stories by Richard Marsh, M.R. James, Arthur Machen, Vernon Lee, George Gissing, Wilkie Collins, Bram Stoker, Mary Cholmondeley, and Mary Ward, the thesis shows how gothicised instances of unproductive-masochism, pathological collecting, thwarted professionals, and emasculated heirs broke down the “framework” within which men and material culture were understood to interact productively and safely. Individual chapters dealing respectively with acquisition, possession, dissemination and inheritance, respond to the recent “material turn” in the humanities, bringing together literary criticism and historically grounded scholarship to reveal the collector and the collection as the locus 3 for concerns with masculinity and materiality that preoccupied a turn-of-the-century mindset.

Abstract:
The study of religious dimensions of visitor experiences in public museums is an under-researched area, partly because of assumptions of the secular nature of the museum space, the dominant assumptions and methods of museum evaluation studies and the relative lack of study of material religion in public spaces not intended to be devotional. This project addresses this by examining the processes through which visitors experience sacred presences in the museum. This research employed Actor Network Theory (Latour 2004) in order to decentre the more prominent components within visitor studies and evaluations (such as the visitor). Using ANT, this study conceives religious interactions as networks that combine objects, people and divine/supernatural presences, all of which have the capacity to affect the network. This network approach was then used to explore and analyse interactions at two religious-themed exhibitions at the British Museum, and the religious tour groups that visit its permanent galleries. The study found that the sacred was evoked in a number of ways in the museum; through embodied interactions with artefacts, as memories, and through engagements with scripture. Each encounter had to negotiate an array of actors that were both present and absent within the museum space. These actors, which had the ability to facilitate and inhibit visitors' religious experiences, included elements often overlooked by museum professionals and within visitor studies (such as overheard comments and glass display cases). The findings also revealed how perceptions of the museum as secular shaped visitor norms and thereby influenced whether the museum became a site of conflict or opportunity for sacred encounters. Furthermore, the research demonstrated the limited capacity of museum staff to influence visitors’ interactions as, irrespective of the museum’s intentions, the commingling of certain objects, spaces and visitors can facilitate experiences of the divine.

Abstract:
In the face of financial disaster, Dr Lydgate attempts to share his concerns with his wife, Rosamund, in George Eliot's Middlemarch (1871). Rosamund's refusal to engage with the crisis, or to sympathise with her husband's despair, is repeatedly presented by Eliot as a preoccupation with inanimate, decorative objects: Rosamund 'turned her neck and looked at a vase on the mantelpiece'. 1 The mid nineteenth-century novel increasingly explores what it means to own, collect and display objects, and how personal and public lives can be constructed and defined by 'things'. Recent critical discussion has examined the significance of the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, and the subsequent international exhibitions, as a catalyst for, and an expression of, new ways of producing and consuming objects. 2 These dazzling exhibitions, in conjunction with the foundation of the South Kensington Museum (1857), began to formulate principles of design and models of taste for the public. Increasingly influential, however, was the development of the smaller, regional museum collections of decorative objects which began to emerge in the second half of the nineteenth century. Most of these shared with their national counterparts an intention to educate the public; almost all retained the intimacy and distinct authoring of their roots with local collectors. This thesis draws together common impulses from real and fictional evidence to suggest ways in which people's relationships to their objects were becoming increasingly sophisticated and intimate. It explores the growing role of local municipal museums in presenting manufactured and decorative pieces, in reinforcing moral and social messages around collecting and display, and in popularising decorative 'things' in the home and beyond, while also examining the growing fictional fascination with, and the increasing visibility of, objects in the novel.
