Hughes, Sarah Anne. "Museum publishing : production and reception of museum books." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/9563.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the phenomenon of museum publishing to question why books are produced by museums. The answer to this question is sought through an empirical study that examines museum books from both their production and their reception as well as a detailed study of the relationship of the texts to the museum. The case study methodology supplies interview data from museum staff involved in writing, editing, designing and project-managing the production of books at the National Gallery and the Wellcome Collection, both in London. Interviews with staff involved with publishing in other national and provincial institutions broaden the basis of these case studies. Visitor responses are obtained primarily through questionnaires delivered electronically to volunteers who purchased exhibition books at these institutions. The cross-disciplinary research draws on theories from museum and publishing studies. Data are analysed from the theoretical position of an active audience (Abercrombie and Longhurst 1998) whose uses of books encompass functions of memory and representation. Genette’s (1997) concept of paratext forms the basis from which to characterise the reciprocal relationship between catalogues and their associated exhibitions. Books contribute to the communication resources of museums, but rather than being viewed merely as adjuncts to the exhibits on display, they are presented in this study as integral to the visitor’s experience both during the museum visit and later, as distributed objects in personal ownership and in wider society. The authority and cultural values associated with books when combined with those of the museum make them a particularly forceful resource for meaning-making for both the producers and the consumers.

Sheehan, Jennifer Karr. "Intangible Qualities of Rare Books: Toward a Decision-Making Framework for Preservation Management in Rare Book Collections, Based Upon the Concept of the Book as Object." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2006. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5213/.

Full text
Abstract:
For rare book collections, a considerable challenge is involved in evaluating collection materials in terms of their inherent value, which includes the textual and intangible information the materials provide for the collection's users. Preservation management in rare book collections is a complex and costly process. As digitization and other technological advances in surrogate technology have provided new forms representation, new dilemmas in weighing the rare book's inherently valuable characteristics against the possibly lesser financial costs of surrogates have arisen. No model has been in wide use to guide preservation management decisions. An initial iteration of such a model is developed, based on a Delphi-like iterative questioning of a group of experts in the field of rare books. The results are used to synthesize a preservation management framework for rare book collections, and a small-scale test of the framework has been completed through two independent analyses of five rare books in a functioning collection. Utilizing a standardized template for making preservation decisions offers a variety of benefits. Preservation decisions may include prioritizing action upon the authentic objects, or developing and maintaining surrogates in lieu of retaining costly original collection materials. The framework constructed in this study provides a method for reducing the subjectivity of preservation decision-making and facilitating the development of a standard of practice for preservation management within rare book collections.

Furgiuele, Peter M. "A museum about the city: an air rights proposal for Boston." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53068.

Full text
Abstract:
The John F. Kennedy Expressway, commonly known as The Central Artery, is an elevated highway running north-south through downtown Boston. It is an immense structure which cuts its way through the urban fabric, is a considerable source of noise and pollution, and visually segregates the city’s downtown from its vital waterfront. Recently a study was undertaken to explore the possibility of removing the elevated Central Artery and replacing it with a tunnel in order to alleviate traffic congestion and noise, curtail pollution and reunite the downtown with the waterfront. If this proposal were carried through, fifteen air-rights parcels (approximately twenty acres) would become available for development in Boston’s inner core. This thesis explores one possible way of using a specific air-rights parcel above the proposed tunnel.

"Policies for the acquisition of printed books at the British Museum Library, 1837-1960 : with particular attention to the procurement of works from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1991. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317768/.

Full text
Abstract:
Using Panizzi's 1837 declaration to the Trustees of the British Museum as the model, the acquisitions policy for a national library is a statement of the need to acquire the national printed archive followed by an indication of the desirable coverage of foreign publishing. Minimum requirements to achieve this are adequate finance, a knowledgeable staff, sufficient space for both the staff and the collections and the ability to make resources available. The role of Panizzi in ensuring the status of the British Museum Library as the national collection has been well documented. Less well known is the part played by his subordinates and successors in helping him and in ensuring that his ideals were implemented and amplified. The more notable of these have been neglected by library history, the more pedestrian completely forgotten. The period from the later 1850s through the 1880s were years of liberal funding and acquisitions growth matched only by that of the first decade of the British Library. It seems possible that even the recent halcyon days will not match the extraordinary development of the collections during the earlier period. Legal deposit, even though difficult to enforce overseas, and a system of international exchanges played an important role when government was forced to curtail the generous grant. It is not feasible to draw firm conclusions about the percentage of world publishing acquired by the British Museum Library as most countries do not yet have accurate figures for their printed output, nor is it possible to be definite about the quantities procured by the Library since the basis for reporting additions changed frequently. In order to gain a picture of what and how material was obtained it was necessary to make lists of registers and receipt books now in the departmental archives. These lists are reproduced in tables and appendices.

De, Pasquale Andrea. "Jean-Baptiste Bodoni, imprimeur d’Europe." Thesis, Paris, EPHE, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EPHE4051.

Full text
Abstract:
Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813) is one of the most famous printers of the western world and, for Italy, the last representative of the "Ancien Régime Typography" at the same time as the first "modern". It has indeed been able to make his own characters while exercising together printing and book trade. After him, the industrialization of the book begins: the activities he met in his company, according to tradition dating back to the birth of printing, divided without return, while print production is now addressed to both larger markets and different and wider audiences. Mass prints were accompanied by a decline in quality and of greater banality of style. With Angelo Pezzana, director of the Library of Parma in the nineteenth century, the tools used by Bodoni for making type, but also its archives and a complete collection of volumes produced by his typography, have been preserved until today. It is therefore possible to reconstruct Bodoni of life, with particular emphasis on its relations with the courts of Europe and the market for bibliophile, on the conditions and labor practices in the foundry of characters and in printing, and the genesis of the most famous works. His fortune follow his death and continues until today, where Bodoni characters are used in graphics and for publications and magazines, as well as for fashion brands. They are always, symbols of elegance, simplicity, and at the same time of the luxury and of the Italian style

The investigation is concerned to the textual criticism at Genesis book, transcript across the IX scroll rolls from the Museu Nacional collection, in Rio de Janeiro, named Pergaminhos Ivriim. These ones are a square consonantal Hebrew writing, as fragments and complete books, which have been brought by D. Pedro II, Regent of the Second Brazilian Kingdom, along his first travel to Europe, in 1871 and 1872. The analysis is related to the investigation about of massoretic features, divisions and scribal errors through the rolls I, II and III, concerned to the fragments of Genesis book, evaluated under rules formulated from the principles of Old Testament scholars. So that, some questions were posed, as the criteria used to find out the textual variants, the reasons to appoint the textual family and the period of its transcription. The conclusions were obtained by textual confrontation between the Genesis writing fragments according diferents periods of Hebrew text: ancient massoretic, late medieval and contemporary. These ones were closely connected each other under three stages of investigation: The first step related to the collation. The second step concerned to the analysis of the readings. The third step affected the textual family.

Watson, Carly Emma. "The legacy of an eighteenth-century gentleman : Alexander Thistlethwayte's books in Winchester College Fellows' Library." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2014. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4954/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the donation of books made by Alexander Thistlethwayte (?1718–1771), a Hampshire grandee and bibliophile, to the Fellows’ Library of Winchester College, the oldest of the English public schools. The first two chapters demonstrate the largely untapped potential of two unique books in the Thistlethwayte benefaction to advance scholarly understanding of topics relating to the copying and transmission of early modern literary texts. The second part of the thesis examines the collecting habits which shaped the physical configuration of Thistlethwayte’s books and the contents of his library. Chapter Three rediscovers the role of the anthology in late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century cultures of compilation, through a comparison of Sammelbände assembled by Thistlethwayte with those that he acquired from an Oxford graduate of the 1690s. Chapter Four traces the growth of Thistlethwayte’s library in the context of his life as a gentleman, taking in evidence from Thistlethwayte’s later donation of books to his alma mater, Wadham College, Oxford. The thesis concludes by reflecting on the conditions of access to the Fellows’ Library from which this doctoral project has benefited, and considers ways of extending the benefits of access and community engagement to scholars and the wider public.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is wrapped up in a comparison of book and museum, which raises questions about the visual technology of the printed page itself: a black and white space. Articles and histories on paper production of the nineteenth century stress the necessity of bleaching wood pulp or rags in order to produce “beautiful,” “polished,” “virginal,” “clean” white paper. Bleaching paper to create a normalized, aestheticized whiteness, upon which to craft the cultural capital of the book, largely anticipates the later use of whiteness in the modern art gallery, where whiteness becomes a “neutral” or “objective” or “normal” color upon which to hang visual art or print words. In certain contexts, especially during Reconstruction and later during the Harlem Renaissance, authors saw the black and white contrast of the printed page as a symbol of racial segregation—whiteness and blackness following strictly ordered patterns. This dissertation thus investigates the shifting symbolism of black text on a white visual field between 1880 and 1940. Several of the subjects of my dissertation have been largely overlooked by critics, (Celia Thaxter, Simon Pokagon, Melvin Tolson), although previous studies have examined the way books of modernist poetry become display spaces—the white space of each page like a wall or frame which affords the lyric poem similar attention to modernist visual art, and imitating styles of display made famous by Alfred Stieglitz in his galleries. Poets thus become curators as well as authors. My dissertation expands these studies to include works written before the modernist period (Thaxter and Pokagon), and after it (William Carlos Williams, E. E. Cummings, and Tolson), as well as analyze alternate material technologies of book production that vastly impact the visual experience of reading. Moreover, I also consider the political reasons for these material changes to the book, including racial representation, so that my work simultaneously explores both the aesthetics and politics of printed text.

Before the book museum of the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB) closed at its original location in spring 2002 , ready to move into a newly built library centre, a last spezial exhibition was opened in the former rooms in November of last year. The selected exhibits offered striking examples to illustrate the censoring, prohibition and persecution of the printed word during the 20th century, whether attributable to state regimentation or self-censorship on the part of authors and publishers. Libraries were equally involved, for example with restrictions on lending. A chronological structure was chosen to elucidate these perspectives and to present the distinguishing an common aspects revealed in prominent examples

Gramstrup, Louise Koelner. "Jewish, Christian, and Muslim women searching for common ground : exploring religious identities in the American interfaith book groups, the Daughters of Abraham." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25937.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how women negotiate their identification within and as a group when engaging in interreligious dialogue. It is an in-depth case study of the women’s interfaith book groups, the Daughters of Abraham, located in the Greater Boston Area. This focus facilitates an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of relationships within one group, between different groups, and as situated in the American sociocultural context. I explore the tensions arising from religious diversity, and the consequences of participating in an interreligious dialogue group for understandings of religious self and others. Categories such as boundary, power, sameness, difference, self and other serve to explore the complexities and fluidity of identity constructions. I answer the following questions: How do members of the Daughters of Abraham engage with the group’s religious diversity? How does their participation in the Daughters of Abraham affect their self-understanding and understanding of the “other?” What can we learn about power dynamics and boundary drawing from the women’s accounts of their participation in the Daughters of Abraham and from their group interactions? Two interrelated arguments guide this thesis. One, I show that Daughters members arrive at complex and fluid understandings of what it means to identify as an American Jewish, Christian, and Muslim woman by negotiating various power dynamics arising from ideas of sameness and difference of religion, gender, and sociopolitical values. Two, I contend that the collective emphasis on commonalities in the Daughters of Abraham is a double-edged sword. Explicitly, this stress intends to encourage engagement with the group’s religious diversity by excluding those deemed too different. However, whilst this emphasis can generate nuanced understandings of religious identity categories, at times it highlights differences detrimental to facilitating such understanding. Moreover, this stress on commonalities illuminates the power dynamics and tensions characterizing this women’s interfaith book group. Scholarship has by and large overlooked women’s interreligious engagements with explicit ethnographic studies of such being virtually non-existent. This thesis addresses this gap by using ethnographic methods to advance knowledge about women’s interreligious dialogue. Furthermore, it pushes disciplinary discourses by speaking to the following interlinked areas: Jewish-Christian-Muslim relations, formalized interreligious dialogue, interreligious encounters on the grassroots level, women’s interreligious dialogue, a book group approach to engaging with religious diversity, and interreligious encounters in the American context post-September 11th 2001.

This qualitative study aimed to raise and discuss ways in which the design field can contribute to science communication for children. Specific applied design processes and certain investigative axes of research were identified from a survey of cases of science communication for children in Brazil and abroad, of different natures and media: collaborative processes, participatory processes, playfulness and information design. In order to highlight and discuss questions relating to these four axes, we conducted a case study of the children\'s information book Lá fora - Guia para descobrir a natureza (texts by Maria Ana Peixe Dias and Inês Teixeira do Rosário, illustrations by Bernardo P. Carvalho, Planeta Tangerina, Portugal, 2014). The case study is based on literature review on: collaborative processes, participatory processes, processes aimed at playfulness, information design, picturebooks and children\'s information books. The analysis suggests that the design field contribution to science communication for children can be enhanced the more comprehensive its scope is and the earlier it is introduced in the design process. In addition, each investigative axis highlights specific contributions, linked to the form of participation that design takes on the production process of the publication, namely: the informative, investigative and critical accuracy, and the creativity in addressing the themes of science (collaborative processes); the defense of autonomy, leadership and respect to cognitive and emotional needs of the child (participatory processes); the poetic, open, imaginative and complex approach of subjects addressed (processes aimed at playfulness); the attention to the usability and readability of objects, and its information visualization (information design).

Abstract:
This research covers a vast period of times. It starts in the 18th century with the founding of L’Inguimbertine, the library-museum of Carpentras, by the bishop of the city, dom Malachie d’Inguimbert (1683-1757). The period of time includes the current project of transferring this atypical establishment into an ancient hospital, a historic monument born out of the conviction of the same prelate. This study evokes the ambitious work of the dignitaries of Carpentras to develop the library-museum in the 19th century, as well as the semi-abandonment of the collections from the 1960s onward. This research intends to show how a population appropriates, or reappropriates, the legacy of a man who imported the Roman style into Comtat Venaissin. It also highlights the mediation needed by the curator in order to preserve the balance between the necessary reappropriation and the respect for Mgr d’Inguimbert’s intention. The organization set in the 19th century is a direct result of the concept of a library-museum developed by the bishop of Carpentras. This original concept itself leads to the way the collections are presented at L’Inguimbertine at the hôtel-Dieu in the 21th century. Today, to ensure continuity, the main driving force of the establishment is to preserve the original intention of the prelate. Finally, this research paper aims at showing how scientific work within the profession is often sacrified for the administrative tasks of the curators

Abstract:
This study examines the functions of objects in a selection of British colonial travel accounts about Africa. The works discussed were published between 1863 and 1908 and include travelogues by John Hanning Speke, Verney Lovett Cameron, Henry Morton Stanley, Mary Henrietta Kingsley, Ewart Scott Grogan, Mary Hall and Constance Larymore. The author argues that objects are deeply involved in the construction of pre-modern and modern spheres that the travelling subject moves between. The objects in the travel accounts are studied in relation to a contextual background of Victorian commodity and object culture, epitomised by the 1851 Great Exhibition and the birth of the modern anthropological museum. The four analysis chapters investigate the roles of objects in ethnographical and geographical writing, in ideological discussions about the transformative powers of colonial trade, and in narratives about the arrival of the book in the colonial periphery. As the analysis shows, however, objects tend not to behave as they are expected to do. Instead of marking temporal differences, descriptions of objects are typically unstable and riddled with contradictions and foreground the ambivalence that characterises colonial literature.

Former National Library of Peiping is the first modern library of China and one of the important opera libraries at that time. The great collection of National Library of Peiping stood as a model for domestic public libraries at that time to collect Chinese drama rare books and brought important new development to libraries in China. Most researches took these drama collection of National Library of Peiping merely as literature reference for Chinese drama history or drama literary theory studies instead of an object for bibliography study. This study will focus on the 141 Chuanqi drama rare books, elaborating and investigating their sources, texts, values and editions. This thesis will include six chapters. Chapter 1 will be an introduction for the study motive, preceding researches, research methodology and target. Chapter 2 will be a brief history of National Library of Peiping. The history will include the library’s establishment, the collection and cataloguing of rare books, how the rare books were transported from Shanghai, Library of Congress (U.S.) to Taiwan, and how they were rearranged and preserved in Taiwan, to provide a clear picture for every stage for the collection. Chapter 3 will discuss the transformation of the idea of collection throughout the whole process, from the library history, rare book collecting records and the rare book cataloguing. The conceptual evolution of collection was resulted from the NEW Cultural Movement and many librarians who received new-fashioned education recruited in National Library of Peiping at that time. Thus, the Library began to take the drama rare books seriously and many rare books were collected. It can also be inferred from the collection seals and handwritten inscriptions on these rare books that collectors at that time includes Zhu Xi-Zu, Dong Kang, Xu Nai-Chang, and Li Ci-Ming. Chapter 4 will reexamine the Chuanqi drama rare books from the perspective of bibliography and conclude that the current collection in National Palace Museum (Taipei) is not the complete collection of National Library of Peiping at that time, as Chang Bi-De indicates. For example, almost all Block-printed edition of JiZhiZhai were not allowed to be transported. The chapter will also elaborate the evaluations and criticisms of Wang Zhong-Min and Zhang Di-Hua on these Chuanqi drama rare books. Chapter 5 will analyze and compile statistics on the editions of the 141 Chuanqi drama rare books in National Palace Museum. By periods, Ming dramas are mainly block-print editions while Ching dramas include handwritten copies and block-print editions. By editions, handwritten copies tend to be exquisite transcripts. They also include some single existing copies and manuscripts. Block-print editions mainly comes from the publishers in Nanjing at that time. They are usually printed in red and black, including woodblock print Illustration and Commentary Punctuation. The publishers at that time usually add “illustration,” “reprint,” “phonetic notes added,” “reedition,” “footnote,” “commentary” in addition to the titles for better promotion. Chapter 6 will be the conclusion, indicating the research achievements, solved and unsolved problem for follow-up researchers. Hopefully, the study will help to provide a clear picture for the history, source, text, value, and editions for the Chuanqi drama rare book collections of Former National Library of Peiping.

With human relationship and mother earth, a historic monument is not only buildings but also a space full of historic stories. Look forward to helping children have a new level of cognition on National Museum of Taiwan Literature and helping the follow-up researchers excavate and study the distinctive and unique narrative Taiwan Literature with multiple and rich historic monuments. Through historical research, research and analyze documents to understand the sequence of history and the reuse of historic monuments. Create narrative picture books on human history with units of the generalized integrated history. In the journey among historical monuments, readers get different points of view from different narration. Historical stories can represent the glory of historical monuments as much as children’s imagination. Imagining different stories taking place among the historical monuments, besides the understanding of people’s life and environment at that time, history may become a moving picture full of spirit.

"The Museum, the Flâneur, and the Book: The Exhibitionary Complex in the Work of Henry James." Master's thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.9032.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: The Victorian era was the age of museum development in the United States. In the wake of these institutions, another important figure of the nineteenth century emerged--the flâneur. The flâneur represents the city, and provided new mechanisms of seeing to the public. The flâneur taught citizens how to gaze with a panoptic eye. The increasing importance of cultural institutions contributed to a new means of presenting power and interacting with the viewing public. Tony Bennett's exhibitionary complex theory, argues that nineteenth-century museums were institutions of power that educated, civilized, and through surveillance, encourage self-regulation of crowds. The flâneur's presence in the nineteenth century informed the public about modes of seeing and self-regulation--which in turn helped establish Bennett's theory inside the museum. The popular writing and literature of the time provides an opportunity to examine the extent of the exhibitionary complex and the flâneur. One of the most prominent nineteenth-century authors, Henry James, not only utilizes museums in his work, but he often uses them in just the manner Bennett puts forth in his theory. This is significant because the ideas about museums in James's work shaped the minds of an expanding literary public in the United States, and further educated, civilized, and regulated readers. James also represents the flâneur in his writing, which speaks to broader cultural implications of the both exhibitionary complex on the outside world, and the effects of broader cultural influences on the museum. Beyond the impact of James's work, in the late nineteenth century American culture increasingly became centered around the printed word. The central position of books in American culture at the end of the nineteenth century allowed books and libraries to appropriate the exhibitionary complex and become tools of power in their own right. The book and the library relate to the museum as part of a larger cultural environment, which emerged as a result of modernity and a response to the ever-changing nineteenth-century world.

People always have lots of images and expectations for the city they live in, because people use different points to read / see / experience this city. To read a city has many ways. You can read a city by writing, speaking, or drawing. pictures are a way to step in the city. It can be different explanations by seeing, feeling, and understanding of different readers. However, the charming points of pictures are that it will give different image spaces to readers. Just like pictures books is an experience for flipping through, or like the chapters connected in the film become an outstanding story. Then, you can read the city and the life by many stories. This thesis is trying to discuss about imaginations of the city re-presentations. When pictures books becomes a way to re-present, how can it be built into real spaces? And how can real spaces be The conceptualization of picture-book narration into Scenario of space. By describing the process of this kind of concept design, it can reply the city imaginations that in my mind. Try to make the Taipei City Musuem to be the operation of the thesis. The main design operation contains two stages: The first stage is discussing about “Re- interpretations of a city by picture books”. Make “moving paths” be a process of experiencing a space. By empathizing and understanding in the process, make it become a picture book, then make the story in the picture book into the tension of real spaces. the design process as an attempt combining picturizing thoughts can help us to improve a design concept into a re-presentation of another space. Right now, we lack a city-museum that belongs to people in Taipei. So, I would like to advance a design project about Taipei City Musuem. The second stage is extended by the conclusion of the last stage. pictures books is a presentation of continuous pictures. It transform words and Perception into a series of imagination. Just like every cut of a film is being spread in flat. And I make the operation of the design of Taipei City Musuem to be the main story. Describing a process of space design by picture books. Thinking again the position of Taipei City Musuem in present times. Architecture and picture books are overlapping. Design is like pulling and dragging in sense and sensibility. You always try to find the balance point between them, and satisfy the self-awareness. This thesis is also satisfying self-imagination in the process of the pulling and dragging between sense and sensibility. This one has no correct answers, because self-awareness of everybody is different. I hope that this operation will provide us more imagination on city and space design. Break the old thinking and release your imagination, life will be lots of fun.

Sheehy, M. G. "Beyond the book: reshaping Australian public history in the Web 2.0 environment." 2008. http://repository.unimelb.edu.au/10187/3464.

Abstract:
With digital media and the web becoming increasingly pervasive in our everyday lives, few historians have considered in depth the impact that this is having on the ways that history is represented and communicated in the public sphere. This thesis is an examination of how the practice of public history in Australia is being reshaped in the Web 2.0 environment. In the context of new media theory, public history practice is considered in relation to identifiable changes in the ways the web is used and understood.
The public historian’s concern with interpreting the past to a public audience means that changing social practices and information patterns are pertinent to their work. This thesis highlights the ways in which different forms of history are being produced, distributed and consumed on the web. It focuses on the potential role of the web user as an active producer of personal and creative interpretations of the past and on how experimental public history practices in the Web 2.0 environment have emerged in response to changing audiences.
This study argues that the rise of Web 2.0 is reflected by personalised, ubiquitous, democratic and innovative public history practices on the web. Through an in depth analysis of The Powerhouse Museum collection search and YouTube as case studies, this thesis shows how increased participation, the proliferation of user-generated content, social networking and existing practices by users in the Web 2.0 environment reshapes public history.
This thesis goes beyond conceiving of the web as a site of historical source material, both digitised and born-digital, to an understanding of the value of participatory media and informal communication in enabling the sharing of historical knowledge and materials between and among networks of people on the web.

Relations between Christians and Muslims have often been strained due to mistrust, misunderstanding and cultural differences. This study focuses on prayer as a possible bridge to mutual understanding between Muslims and Christians. However, the motivation for this study goes deeper than a search for good neighbourliness. It stems from participating in the ''mission of God" in society. Chapter 2 gives a detailed description of Muslim prayer (salat), looking at the call to prayer, intention, ablution, prayer postures, the place and the direction of salat. Chapter 3 contains a Christian interpretation of Muslim prayer. It examines the invocation ("In the name of God"), the Islamic Creed, and salat as ritual. Chapter 4 draws a comparison between the opening Surah (Al-Fatihah) and the Lord's Prayer. Both the common and distinguishing features are highlighted. Chapter 5 draws some missiological implications, focusing on prayer postures and the relationship between dialogue and witness.

Abstract:
The dialogue between ethnographic and bibliographical collections is an imperative theme when preparing their exposition/disclosure.We propose the analysis of the ethnographic and bibliographical collections of the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra (MCUC) and the Life Sciences Department Library (DCV) of the Faculty of Science and Technology of Coimbra (FCTUC), with the aim of making an exposition proposal. We have chosen a qualitative approach of an exploratory nature: a literature review and a case study. In the case study, it is made the background history of the institutions mentioned above, with the description of their collections. The objects/books selection criteria is explained for a subsequent placing in an exhibition context. This research, with a strong practical component application, allowed the study of Angola and Mozambique (from MCUC) and Guinea´s ethnographic objects and books (particularly the Old Book) of DCV´s library, followed by the elaboration of a photographic guide, allusive illustrations, complementary texts and representative tables of the selected objects/books. We also made the elaboration of an exposition and disclosure proposal. We recognize that the dialogue between collections is fruitful and should be promoted in an exhibition context. This dialogue starts with a primary knowledge of the collections and is based in an appropriate research. In the case study for this specific thesis, this dialogue is imperative for the disclosure of the ethnographic and bibliographical collections of the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra (MCUC) and the Life Sciences Department Library (DCV).
