Abstract:
The Mexican collection at Lund’s Museum of Sketches in is an unusual and valuable collection both from a Mexican and from an international perspective: the collection was built by Gunnar Bråhammar in the late 1960s, and counts works by David Alfaro Siqueiros, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and Juan O’Gorman but also Francisco Eppens, Rufino Tamayo, González Camarena, Raul Angiano, Leopoldo Méndez and Desiderio Xochitiotzin. The article discusses especially “the New Deal” by Rivera, “the Image of Mexico” at the Museo Nacional de Antropología e Historia in Mexico City by Morado Chavez, and “El Pájaro Amarillo” by Goertiz, and the great stone mosaic at the Central Library of the National Autonomous University of Mexico by O’Gorman.

Abstract:
While preparing a review of the bivalve mollusk fauna of the Panamic Province, we encountered a conspicuous, colorful species of the genus Chama Linnaeus, 1758, that could not be identified with any named species. After examining type specimens at The Natural History Museum, London (BMNH), the United States National Museum of Natural History (USNM), the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia (ANSP), the California Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (LACM), and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History (SBMNH), we have concluded that this species is new to science.

Abstract:
Oligocene landscapes of New Mexico were dominated by andesite stratovolcanoes and resurgent domes of ash-flow tuff (ignimbrite) cauldrons (Smith et al., 1985). This pervasive volcanism produced volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks that have been neglected by vertebrate paleontologists, so that, until now, no Oligocene vertebrate fossils have been discovered in New Mexico. This documents the initial results of vertebrate paleontological investigations of Oligocene rocks in New Mexico, a lower jaw of the oromerycid artiodactyl Montanatylopus matthewi, the first Oligocene mammal from the state. Abstract:

The Cuban Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei) is native to the Bahamas, the Cuba Archipelago, and Little Cayman, but is now among the world’s most widely distributed invasive lizards. In Mexico, the species has been reported from the states of Campeche, Chiapas, Jalisco, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Yucatán. However, no complete compendium exists summarizing the locality-level distribution of A. sagrei in Mexico. Herein we provide an exhaustive compilation of vouchered Mexican specimens based on museum records and the literature. Supplementing this review are reports of five new localities for A. sagrei in Veracruz and Tabasco. We conclude with brief comments on the potential ecological effects of this species in Mexico.

Horta, Maria de Lourdes Parreiras. "Museum semiotics : a new approach to museum communication." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/35304.

Full text
Abstract:
The research explores the theoretical possibility of a semiotic approach to the Museum phenomenon, seen as a process of communication and signification, and the consequences on the determination of the social function of museums, in its semantic and pragmatic levels. It proposes a new discipline for the field - that of 'Museum Semiotics', as a theoretical background and a tool for the understanding of museums as 'semiosic spaces', acting in the cultural process through their 'communicative actions'. PARTS I and II propose the basic assumptions and premises for the study of the specific Museum Language, defining its terms and concepts, and considering museum objects as bearing a 'sign-function', as 'signifying units' used in the construction of messages and 'discourses', manifested or hidden in museum exhibitions. The mechanisms of the process of sign production and of sign interpretation in the Museum context, the concept of 'museality', the Museum 'mythological speech', the interplay of codes and the interaction between emitters and receivers in the museum communication process, are explored here. PARTS III and IV propose and develop a preliminary model of analysis of exhibition 'texts' and of their specific 'rhetorics', applied in a particular case study, the exhibition on 'Buddhism, Art and Faith', held at the British Museum (1985), in order to detect the multiple ways in which the public 'reads' a Museum message, and all the elements working in this process. PART V presents the conclusions and insights on Museum Communication, on exhibition production and evaluation, on Museum Education, and on new fields of research opened up through the approach of Museum Semiotics, proposing a strategy for changing the conditions of communication, through open and aesthetic texts, which may encourage the visitors to recover their freedom of decoding'.

Rose, Rebecca. "The evolution of the private art museum in Mexico." Thesis, University of Essex, 2016. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/19384/.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last thirty years there has been a proliferation in the number and diversity of privately- funded exhibition spaces for contemporary art in Mexico. Driving this development is a new generation of art collectors and my research project is concerned with how collector-led models of patronage have influenced the recognition, impact and public display of contemporary art in Mexico. My thesis begins by exploring what constitutes an art collection, the significance of a museum, and what motivates a collector. I then present an overview of the historical relationship between state and private art collections in Mexico, followed by a critique of landmark events in the genesis of the Mexican art market. In the second part of my research project I identify a group of influential mid-twentieth century collectors who established their own exhibition spaces in order to share their collections with the public, followed by an analysis of their legacy through the activity of the current generation of collectors, whose efforts to promote contemporary art within Mexico and abroad have spawned a new climate of creative enterprise and collaboration. This thesis seeks to present a survey of the evolution of the private exhibition space in Mexico by examining independent cultural initiatives whose ambition is to change the way the public engages with contemporary art. In my findings I examine how collectors’ objectives manifest a vision for the museum visitor experience and the impact of these privately-funded institutions on Mexico’s cultural identity.

MacLeod, S. "Museum architecture : a new biography." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1379543/.

Full text
Abstract:
What do we really understand about museum architecture? How are museums made through design, but also through use? What are the motivations of those involved in museum projects and how is the physical stuff of museums implicated in the creation of professional identities and social relationships? Recent decades have witnessed an international explosion of museum building, expansion and renovation and the development of a sub-discipline in museum studies as museum professionals and academics have sought to understand the myriad issues involved in capital development. Despite the number of texts and events dedicated to planning successful capital projects, there has been little detailed exploration of the nature of museum architecture. Dominant understandings of museum architecture as the aesthetic outcome and activity of the architect continue to inform much writing about museum buildings, and the histories these texts construct about museums and how they are made, continue to influence professional attitudes towards capital development projects. This thesis utilises an architectural history of one museum – the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool – in order to explore the nature of museum architecture and the multiple ways in which it is produced. Driven by critical thinking around the social production of architecture, the thesis develops a biographical approach to unearth detailed histories of architectural change and development and provide glimpses of tangled stories of occupation and use revealing of social and professional relationships and of the politics and tensions behind architectural development. Drawing on research in museum studies, architectural history and theory as well as biography, autobiography and life writing, the thesis explores aspects of the subjects, methods and outcomes of architectural history and argues for detailed and nuanced histories of museum architecture which expand our understanding of how museums are made. Biography emerges as a route towards meaningful histories of change with the potential to provide some sense of the ordinary lives, the human bodily experiences that have made and remade the architecture of the museum throughout its ‘life’ and tell new stories of museum architecture necessary for the ongoing development and, potentially, radical remaking, of the physical stuff of museums and galleries.

Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1994.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaf 50).<br>This thesis explores the potential of the sports museum as a major institution and resource. Drawing from the great tradition of sports and from the character of the New England region, the design of a New England Sports Museum is undertaken. The museum's design is formulated on a concept of architectural imbeddedness; the notion of a "world within" - a world which in preserving a contextual fabric and character becomes part of the life of that context, while engendering a distinct experience within which is its own.<br>by Christopher Valentino Miller.<br>M.S.

Abstract:
The New Orleans Museum of Art is New Orleans' oldest art institute and is the premier art institute of the Gulf South. From September through December 2009, I served as an intern in the Development Department at NOMA and then went on to fill the role of Interim Grants Officer from December through the time this document was written. I also have covered for the Special Events Coordinator during her leave of absence beginning January 4, 2010 through the present. NOMA has strengths and weakness internally, and opportunities and threats to functioning exist as well. Through a thorough examination of this institution, a consultantcy's report was compiled based on examination of NOMA and the best practices of comparable institutions and museum management standards.

Abstract:
A museum is an important type in the palette of public buildings. Most famous and iconic museums are mainly dedicated to house artworks or historical and cultural artifacts. Aside from the sheltering of the artifacts, museums often are landmarks, which contribute to the identity of a place. The few museums dedicated to the automobile is interesting because America, also called the country on the wheels has little more than very basic renovated warehouses or former factories, with little commitment to exhibiting cars in a beautiful manner. The proposal here seeks to define a space that both honors its Corvette exhibits and hopefully provides sufficient architectural character to be accepted as an institutional landmark.<br>Master of Architecture

Abstract:
Architecture has always been about connection since its primary purpose of building a shelter for humans. Among many other things, it provides connections between people, and connections between people and the natural and built environment. The design and building process is about connection as well. We design in the present, relying on the past to build in the future. In this context, time is the strongest connection that is present in most of the built environment around us. I consider museums to be a good building type that connects people with objects and materials of historical, religious, and cultural importance through preservation and presentation for the public. Since a very young age, I used to admire the buildings while walking the streets of Casablanca, where I was born. A city that is a combination of traditional Islamic influenced design and the European style of construction brought by the colonizers. My goal in this thesis is to explore, in an architectural setting, connecting the old city to the new city, and present this story to the general public.<br>Master of Architecture
