Nguyen, Tuan. "Queering Australian Museums: Management, Collections, Exhibitions, and Connections." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18169.

Full text
Abstract:
Queering Australian Museums addresses the problem of how queer or LGBTIQ communities can be further included in Australian museums on their own terms. It looks at four areas of museums—management, collections, exhibitions, and connections with audiences and communities—to consider barriers and enablers of queer inclusion in these often heteronormative institutions. Case studies of queer-inclusive efforts in public Australian museums are interpreted from institutional and community perspectives drawn from 25 interviews. The interviews are put into critical conversation with archival material and literature from museum studies and the emerging field of queer museology. The study evaluates the visibility of the history, cultures, and identities of queer communities in Australian museums. It establishes that many public representations of queerness have been driven by the efforts of LGBTIQ communities, particularly through community-based heritage organisations. It also gathers and reflects upon examples of critical queer inclusion that have occurred in public museums. Using these exemplars, it argues that queer communities should be empowered to make decisions about their own heritage with the support of museums and their unique attributes; that individual and organisational leadership, involving queer individuals and allies, should be brought to bear on this task; and that effectively navigating the tensions between museums and queer communities requires mutual understanding and accommodation. Through the process of queering the museum, it is suggested, each party might be transformed, leading to LGBTIQ diversity being valued as an integral part of society. The thesis addresses the gap in Australian museum studies literature on queer or LGBTIQ inclusion compared with Euro-American settings. It further contributes original case studies to the international field of queer museology, and to museum studies literature on including and empowering diverse communities. Both recognising the agency of queer communities and also engaging with the language and conventions of museums, it constructs a distinct account of how to navigate the historical tensions between the two. It thereby aims to enrich museum offerings for all audiences on the terms of those erstwhile excluded.

Abstract:
The State Government of São Paulo has applied its efforts in the past twenty eight years in order to accomplish the currently so called municipalization of the Statewide Historic and Pedagogical Museums Network of São Paulo. This set of museums, recognized as the first and largest museums network of the country and mostly created by Vinício Stein Campos (pedagogical professional), was understood, throughout the years, as having an eminently municipal nature; for this reason, the Secretary of State for Culture, at its core, realized that these collections should be legitimately given back to their towns due to their characteristics and meanings concerning the local communities. The text Historic and Pedagogical Museums in the 21st century: municipalization process and new perspectives intends to research, register and analyze the development of the process of municipalization of the Historic and Pedagogical Museums of São Paulo, which is still in progress, and the possible changes it may bring to these institutions, concerning management, technical and conceptual issues. Starting from a general overview of the constitution of the Historic and Pedagogical Museums Network, developed during the decades of 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, were examined, at first, the motivation for the custody transference of the statewide collections, located in São Paulo countryside, to their host towns. As a result, it analyzes, through the realization of case studies, the impacts such process has been generating over these museological institutions, and also evaluates the possible perspectives it gives to them concerning management, both museological management and municipal culture device management.

Fouseki, Kalliopi. "Conflict resolution in the management of in-situ museums." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2008. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1444269/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis suggests a conflict management model for the resolution of conflicts that occur during the in-situ conservation and presentation of archaeological remains that are discovered as a result of development projects. More specifically, the thesis examines the extent to which the creation of in-situ museums---museums that are usually located in the basements of modern buildings and preserve archaeological remains in situ---can function as a compromise solution among the conflicting parties. The thesis is divided into eight chapters. The first chapter presents the research aims and objectives of the thesis while the second chapter analyses the methodological approaches. The third chapter reviews from a critical point of view the basic conflict management theories that have been developed by a variety of disciplines including economics, management science and sociology. This chapter identifies the key conflict elements and suggests a descriptive conflict management model. This model constitutes a tool for analysing the conflict situations in the case studies. Chapter four conceptualises the case of in-situ museums and explores how some of their distinctive characteristics play a role in conflict genesis, escalation and resolution. The next three chapters analyse conflict situations within the theoretical framework and discourse that have been presented in the two previous ones. Chapter 5 examines conflict situations that arose when archaeological remains were discovered during the construction of private works. Chapter 6 analyses examples of conflicts that relate to the discovery of archaeological remains during the implementation of public works. Chapter 7 is exclusively devoted to the case of the New Acropolis Museum in Athens. Chapter 8 concludes with the suggestion of an operational conflict management model that can be integrated into the heritage management planning. The formation of this model was based on the descriptive conflict management model presented in chapter 3. The operational conflict management model is enriched with a series of guidelines and tactics for dealing effectively with oppositions and conflicts.

Abstract:
Today there are hundreds of historic house museums open in communities across the country. Many of these museums recognize a noted historical character or event while others are noted for their architectural styling and detail. How should these museums care for their collections and interpretations to keep their standards high and to attract visitors? The case studies look at how several museums in east central Indiana operate and manage under different types of ownership, including state, county, and city governments, foundations, and historic groups. From interviews and visitations these museums were analysed as to how they coped with finances, day to day operations, traffic, collections and maintenance policies. The histories and future goals of each site were also researched and documented. Conclusions were drawn after these case studies were finished as to what were the best methods of management in order to achieve a high quality historic house museum.

Abstract:
The issue of the economics of cultural institutions, their economic impact, and measurement of their performance has been paid systematic attention basically only in the past few years. PhD thesis analyses the methods of performance measurement in public art museums and creates economic models. Aim of my thesis is also to create a model for museum managers to measure the performance. Nowadays it is almost necessary to integrate performance measurement system in organization´s strategy decision making. The museum managers feel the pressure to prove that their organization is performing well by various stakeholders and we perceive the idea that multidimensional performance measures could fill the informational gap concerning performance, quality, and the artistic value of cultural programs. The mixed research method was employed in this research. Qualitative data was obtained from the questionnaire and interviews. Quantitative data was obtained from the questionnaire, annual reports and reports of The National Information and Consulting Centre for Culture (NIPOS). The aim of this study is to propose a comprehensive multidimensional model to assess art museum activities. This model takes into account the scope and character of museum´s mission. This model consists of implementation of Data Envelopment Analysis into Balanced Scorecard.

Blanch, Bofi ll Maria Teresa. "La gestió dels museus i el patrimoni en les polítiques culturals a Catalunya (1980-2018)." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/665944.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis “The museums and heritage management within the cultural policies in Catalonia (1980-2018)” aims to assess which instruments are the most efficient for the management of public administered museums and cultural heritage in Catalonia. Some instruments that, besides the required funding and the orientations of the cultural policies, help to find complementary income sources in a context of diminishing public funding. The thesis goes from the analysis of the traditional museology management until the new museologies, where the heritage is considered as another form for leisure purposes. This is why the ecomuseum model is emphasized. It is based in the diversity of the traditional lifestyles of the territory, which nowadays connect with the ideas of sustainable local development, the research of quality of life, associated with an increasing demand of the preservation of the natural environment and to the connection with the active involvement of the population, through the empowerment. From this perspective, the modern management of the museums and the cultural heritage focuses on the ideas of collectivity and territoriality. It highlights the value of the artworks and the museum collections as historical documents to understand the present. It is also used to create stories that develop critical thought, and with that support the creation of a fairer and freer society. Museums have to work to be spaces of experience, of entertainment, of education and for debate. They need to become observatories, allowing the management of criticism and self-reflection, helping to develop new researches on the interaction between society and heritage. The thesis approaches the situation of the museums within the framework of cultural policies during the last decades in Catalonia, and also, their legislative treatment, considering the assigned competences of the different administrations. The thesis and its conclusions draw on a range of sources including interviews with museology experts and cultural heritage management professionals, the participation in debate groups, and the meetings with specialists engaged with during various seminars. In order to support the conclusions, it has been important to use a specialised bibliography and documentation on museology management. My professional experience in museums management has also helped me to understand and analyse better the subject. The conclusions include, but are not limited to, the increasing importance of the relations between the museum’s management, the cultural heritage policy, and the touristic sector, alongside the new challenges that this brings up. These are linked to previously established hypothesis. These conclusions intend to provide significant elements to the modern debate around the management of museums and of the cultural heritage. They seek to support potential actions aimed at dealing with the problems faced in the management of the cultural heritage, and museum management in particular.

Abstract:
Museums are service-oriented information systems that provide access to information bearing materials contained in the museum's collections. Within museum environments, the primary vehicle for quality assurance and public accountability is the accreditation process of the American Association of Museums (AAM). Norbert Wiener founded the field of cybernetics, employing concepts of information feedback as a mechanism for system modification and control. W. Edwards Deming applied Wiener's principles to management theory, initiating the wave of change in manufacturing industries from production-driven to quality-driven systems. Today, the principles are embodied in the ISO 9000 International Standards for quality management systems (QMS), a globally-recognized set of standards, widely employed as a vehicle of quality management in manufacturing and service industries. The International Organization for Standardization defined a process for QMS registration against ISO 9001 that is similar in purpose to accreditation. This study's goals were to determine the degree of correspondence between elements of ISO 9001 and quality-related activities within museum environments, and to ascertain the relevance of ISO 9001-2000 as a technique of museum evaluation, parallel to accreditation. A content analysis compared museum activities to requirements specified in the ISO 9001-2000 International Standard. The study examined museum environment surrogates which consisted of (a) web sites of nine museum studies programs in the United States and (b) web sites of two museum professional associations, the AAM and the International Council of Museums (ICOM). Data items consisted of terms and phrases from the web sites and the associated context of each item. Affinity grouping of the data produced high degrees of correspondence to the categories and functional subcategories of ISO 9001. Many quality-related activities were found at the operational levels of museum environments, although not integrated as a QMS. If activities were unified as a QMS, the ISO 9001 Standard has potential for application as an evaluative technique in museum environments.

Burton, Christine. "Here to stay : the role of value creation, capture and exchange in limiting the liability of newness for new entrant museums." University of Technology, Sydney. School of Leisure Sport and Tourism, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/422.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the concepts of value creation, capture and exchange in limiting the liability of newness for nonprofit museums entering the sector. There has been considerable examination of cultural value in relation to museums. However, little is known about how value is created, captured and exchanged for stakeholders in new museums. It is posited that value creation, capture and exchange constitute a value cycle. Through this value cycle management in new museums detects and limits the liability of newness. The ability to detect and limit the liability of newness enables the continuation of the museum. If the liability of newness is not limited, it may mean that a new museum exits the sector or is transformed. The concept of a value cycle is derived from an examination of the nonprofit management literature, aspects of the for-profit management literature and the arts and museum management literature. Value creation is a key concept in the three literature areas. Value creation in this context, is specifically defined as the worth of the physical manifestation of the museum. It resides in the building and the collection, services and programs within the building. It is suggested that this value needs to be transformed and consumed by a range of stakeholders. The transformation of value creation is denoted as value capture. Value capture is the appeal of programs, projects and activities. Value capture includes how well the products and services align with particular stakeholders, how accountable the managers are to stakeholders and how products and services are consumed by stakeholders. The measure of how managers have been able to capture value is in the realm of value exchange. Value exchange is the merit of programs, projects and activities. Value exchange is in the form of revenue raised through sponsorship; continuation of revenue investment by the principal stakeholder, the state; time and money transacted by visitors; and intangible exchange such as leadership and reputation enhancement through collaborations. A Value Cycle Framework of New Entrant Museums is then developed as a working analytical tool to assess how the value cycle operates and how the liability of newness is detected and limited by museum management. x The Value Cycle Framework is used to assess four cases. These case studies include the National Museum of Australia as a purpose built new entrant; the Australian National Maritime Museum as a purpose built new entrant; the Mint as a recycled new entrant; and the Earth Exchange as a refurbished new entrant. Each case is assessed discretely using secondary and primary source material and analysing qualitative data generated from interviews with key stakeholders. The cases are then compared in order to track similarities and differences in relation to value creation, capture and exchange. The research findings suggest that a value cycle is operating in relation to new entrant museums. This value cycle is dynamic and non-sequential. Until value creation is floated for a range of stakeholders it is difficult for managers to know the worth of their content, location or their building. Value creation is a nominal starting point, signifying the arrival of a new entrant in the museum marketplace. However, value capture is the zone that is the most vulnerable and volatile for managers of new museums. Typically in these case studies value capture includes a disruptive episode, such as a review process that indicates the liability of newness. Managers within the museum who can respond and resolve contradictions between museological beliefs and the demands of stakeholders (and in so doing limit the liability of newness) are likely to continue museum operations. Senior executives who find such reconciliation more difficult, jeopardize the future operations of the museum to such an extent that the museums close or are transformed within the museum sector. Through these four case studies a revised Value Cycle Framework is developed as an analytical device. This analytical framework can assist in understanding the processes involved in new entry for museums.

This study examines the experience of blind people in science and art museums. It is important for two reasons. First, museums have the potential to become hotbeds for the development of inclusive technology and practices. Second, improving the experience for a small section of society with special needs, blind visitors in this case, can lead to a better experience for everyone. In the current landscape, museums are already on this path consciously or unconsciously. At this juncture, the right decisions could lead to a better and more inclusive future for everyone. As a first step in this direction, this thesis describes the use of the human centered design process to identify opportunity areas that can improve the experience universally. The three key areas were identified through extensive primary and secondary research involving interviews with key stakeholders and user observation. Major opportunities lie in the areas of Navigation, Multimodal experiences and Social Inclusion. These areas not only represent challenges faced by blind visitors, but also key improvement areas for all visitors. For example, navigation is important for all visitors, but more so for blind visitors because it represents independence. Current layouts of museums force otherwise completely independent visitors to depend on external help. Improvements in any of these areas is very likely to improve the overall experience of museums, while including an often overlooked segment of the population.

Hutchison, Fiona Catherine. "Socio-cultural impacts of museums for their local communities : the case of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14387.

Full text
Abstract:
In the English museums sector, an impetus for impact assessment stems from an internal ethos towards producing positive impacts for the public. Furthermore, as institutions largely dependent on national and local government funding, museums have increasingly been called to demonstrate their impacts to policy makers. Economic impact and valuation procedures are employed to help meet these demands. However, consideration of non-economic impacts has not kept pace. Reasons include the contested priorities in the sector, a fluctuating policy landscape and too exclusive a focus on theoretical debates rather than empirical research. Indeed, a great deal of attention and time has already been allocated to impact assessment with little accumulation of evidence at a museum-specific or national level. Accordingly, this research set out to reveal a detailed understanding of socio-cultural impacts of museums for their local communities. A thorough meta-synthesis of nineteen academic and non-academic sources, revealed the limitations of previous studies. These limitations relate to sampling, method choice, sophistication of analysis and transparency in reporting. Often, only potential impacts have amounted. The Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM), in the southwest city of Exeter offered a suitable research site for this large-scale study. Drop and Collect administered household surveys ensured the elicitation of views from residents across the city. A range of statistical analysis techniques were applied to cross-sectional samples (n=435, n=384). The main contribution of this research is to demonstrate a replicable approach to eliciting views from the public regarding the impacts of their local museum. Future evaluation can follow this model which is neither focused upon economic impacts, nor arrives at a monetised valuation. Cluster Analysis proves a preferable way of grouping the public rather than traditional segmentations pertaining to socio-demographic or behavioural characteristics. Furthermore, socio-cultural impacts are effectively assessed, monitored and prioritised through Gap Analysis. Factor Analysis reveals latent constructs of Personal-fulfilment, Objects and their Surrounding Narratives, Self-actualisation, Learning and Networked Leisure drive these impacts. Therefore, this research meets the museum management challenge of finding a suitable design for assessment of impacts in relation to different communities.

The present study broaches the universe of political and administrative organs of the Museum Managements, linked to the State of Bahia, in the period of 1967-2013, as well as cultural policies implemented at the federal and state levels, mainly in the field of the museums. The goal of this study is to identify how the Bahia museums, subordinated to these administrations, developed their socio-cultural and educational actions. To provide more specific contours to this approach were selected as exemplary cases, the Castro Alves Historical Park and the Museum Abelardo Rodrigues. The study also draws attention to the process of building a museum policy, highlighting the implementation of the National Museums Policy in 2003. The research in primary sources found that regardless of the guidelines issued by the power structure, the museums researched in this study, since their foundations, have socio-cultural and educational actions aligned with the National Museums Policy.

Abstract:
The purpose of my research was to investigate participative management at the Albany Museum with a view to generating knowledge and insights that can be used to support senior management’s engagement with participative management at mid-management level. My interest was to investigate participative management with regards to five HODs of the Albany Museum with a view to generating knowledge and insights that can be used to support senior management’s engagement with participative management at mid-management level. The research was informed by the interpretive paradigm. The interpretive paradigm does not concern itself with the search for broadly applicable laws and rules but rather seeks to produce descriptive analyses that emphasise deep interpretation and understanding of social phenomena through the meaning that the people assign to them. This study is mostly descriptive and presents the reality of participants from their own experience. Semi-structured interviews and observation capture ‘insider’ knowledge that is part of an interpretive methodology. The study found that participative management was both understood and generally accepted as a good way to manage an organisation, and even members who were critical of it could see its benefits. However, the fractured and diversified structure of the organisation calls for a particularly skillful application of this management approach, one which would also demand leadership and a greater sense of working towards what are called collegial models of management. Whether this is in fact desirable for a museum is debatable.

Abstract:
The present study aimed to analyze the general uses of the terms documentation, document and object within the context of the museums field. This context was characterized in two universes: the theoretical, represented by selected bibliography taken from Documentation, Information Science and Museology, and practical, consisting of two standards of museums area. The objectives of working with these two universes were to map, characterize and discuss ideas, approaches and tensions between the worlds of theory and practice, without the intention of getting any unique definition. In order to get those objectives, an exploratory, descriptive, comparative methodology was chosen, that also drew upon elements of historical research. As regards procedures, bibliographic record and use of terminological data collection form for the term documentation were used, and this last one was only to systematize meanings and not to elaborate a unified definition. The comparison between the uses of the terms being studied point out their polysemy and ambiguity and, in the case of term documentation, the idea of its connection with the control of the collections still remains. Results of this study also reinforce this diversity of meanings strongly influences what is done in professional practice. Furthermore, it consolidates different traditions and ways of conceiving documentation and objects-documents in museums - which should be increasingly researched to reinforce ties and review concepts and procedures. Finally, it is worth noting that the purpose of this study was to explore the terminological differences, so inherent to the universe of museums, and raise the issue of how to deal with them and from them.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, a high-level management strategy was developed for the museums and collections of the University of Pretoria. Specific areas where improvements to the current operations of the University museums can be made, were identified and solutions proposed. This analysis was based on a survey of the current operations of the University museums, as well as an analysis of the needs of all stakeholder groups. Proposals to improve the operation of the University museums include the following: - Rationalising collections to ensure that available technical and organisational resources are focused on the most valuable collections; - Improving the use and maintenance of collections to ensure that the needs of stakeholders are met; - Ensuring that sufficient financial and organisational resources are mobilised to support the operations of the museums. A brief overview of the steps needed to implement these proposals and to adjust the management strategy on an ongoing basis, is given. The author believes that the implementation of the proposals outlined in this report can contribute towards ensuring that the museums of the University of Pretoria help to fulfil the overall mission and vision of the University of Pretoria.

Abstract:
Information Technology (IT) has been put forth as a reasonable way to sustain visitor interest and encourage visit repetition in museums. Therefore, IT is becoming more common in museum settings and professionals express their need for more information about how their visitors interact with these systems. This dissertation is an attempt to answer this call. We propose three essays that deal with different aspects of museums and IT from a user-centered perspective. The first essay is an attempt to determine with a free simulation experiment how IT and more particularly websites can arouse interest for museological content. The second essay relies on a field study to analyze the influence of IT on affective and cognitive reactions during a museum visit, namely perceived enjoyment, perceived authenticity and learning. In the third essay, we use focus groups and questionnaires to explore visitor expectations towards a phenomenological experience and the role played by IT in visitor experience of the past. This dissertation contributes to research by (1) advancing our knowledge of IT dedicated to the cultural heritage area, and (2) identifying and understanding visitor perceptions of hedonic systems. By proposing a set of key dimensions that could be used for IT evaluation in the cultural heritage, this dissertation also offers actionable advices to museum professionals.

Abstract:

Single donor museums like the Isabella Stewart Gardner in Boston, the McNay Museum of Art in San Antonio, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and The Barnes Foundation in Merion and Philadelphia, provide an intimate experience for their visitors, donors, supporters and staff members. They must compete with larger, more encyclopedic museums, with larger budgets and more resources. Like all museums, they hold art in the public trust and are responsible to the public. Contemporary museology asks not only that all museums protect their collections and educate the public, but that they also engage with their communities. None of the single donors highlighted had to donate their art, their money or their homes, but all chose to. Each museum chose to expand or relocate in response to difficult problems, whether financial, logistical (need for more space) or legal. Each engages new publics in creative ways. Certain predictable problems arose for each and they creatively resolved (and continue to resolve) those problems. Lessons learned from the experience of four single donor museums may suggest new thinking for those anticipating similar expansions or moves.

Abstract:

This dissertation explores how California history museums represent the history of children and childhood. This work is inspired by earlier studies in the fields of anthropology, sociology, museum studies, and public history that question and analyze the underrepresentation or misrepresentation of groups, such as women and ethnic minorities, in US museums. How US museums represent children and their history has yet to receive scholarly attention.

This dissertation contributes to filling this gap in the literature and bases its conclusions on a state-wide survey of more than 200 California museums, interviews with 110 museum professionals or volunteers, site visits to 40 museums, and in-depth field research at 10 museums. I argue that too often the experiences, stories, and contributions of children are overlooked, absent, or marginalized in California history museums. When representations of children's history do emerge, they often reflect ideals rather than realities, universalize the historical experience of childhood, and, in the process, romanticize the past. This dissertation acknowledges obstacles that get in the way of richer representation and offers potential solutions.

During my study it became clear that multiple meanings of children's history are at work in the California museum community: the history of children, history for children, and history by children. This dissertation examines each in turn and demonstrates how conceptions of children, many with deep historical roots, influence not only museum exhibitions but also programming for children. Central to this dissertation is the study of history by children at the Pasadena Museum of History, which provides middle-school students the opportunity to teach history as docents to younger children. Drawing upon my three years of participant observation at this site and interviews with forty middle-school students, I contend that inviting children to participate, create, and co-produce in museum spaces improves children's attitudes towards museums, enriches representation, and brings to light perspectives that may otherwise remain marginalized.

Abstract:
Museum asset transfer is a process where responsibility for the operation and management of museum buildings owned by local authorities are transferred to external groups. Instances of museum asset transfer are increasing as local authorities attempt to reduce expenditure in response to austerity measures. While the politics of austerity have been thoroughly described and critiqued, its repercussions for local authority museum services are yet to be grasped. This thesis examines one of these repercussions, seeking to understand the processes, people and rationales involved in asset transfer. The methodology for the thesis takes the writings associated with actor-network-theory (ANT) as a point of departure. This provides a way into the detail of how asset transfer works, both inside the local authority and for the groups of local people involved. Chapter 4 illustrates the influence of limited numerical data and reductive valuation frameworks on decision-making, showing how certain types of museum are more vulnerable to cuts than others. Chapter 5 describes the mechanics of asset transfer, showing that transfer groups have limited leverage to shape transfer conditions. Chapter 6 investigates how organisational practices shape relationships, structure actions and circulate implicit logics as a means to understanding the experience of members of transfer bodies entering the museum profession for the first time. I show that perceptions of professional identity are important and are informed by encounters with organisational practices as much as with people. Chapter 7 provides empirical evidence of how the public nature of these buildings complicates as well as motivates transfer, with attempts to ensure this publicness was maintained having both limiting and enabling effects. While asset transfer involves separation from the public infrastructure of the local authority and the withdrawal, in part or in full of their financial support, this thesis seeks to show that transfer bodies and council officers remain concerned with the public nature of these buildings, exploring how this concern is translated into action in this context. The forms of management resulting from asset transfer are termed 'community' or 'alternative' management in professional debates. The term 'other-than-public' is proposed as a productive prefix as it highlights the central conceptual tension of transfer: interpreting and maintaining publicness in a setting where public support has been removed.

Potter, Elizabeth A. "Fund-raising systems in children's museums: An analysis of fund-raising behavior and philanthropic income trends." ScholarWorks, 1996. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/483.

Abstract:
The problem under investigation. This dissertation analyzed philanthropic donations and fund-raising behavior in children's museums. The research embodies a descriptive, inductive, and deductive study which infers that philanthropic donations increase gradually and are influenced by an organization's fund-raising behavior. The subjects. A stratified random sample of 15 small, 47 medium, and 20 large U.S. children's museums were surveyed; operating budgets determined museum size. The methodology. Time-series statistical techniques and economic data measures calculated the change in children's museum philanthropic donations from 1990-1994. Correlation coefficients determined the relationships between the income variables. The fund-raising behavior variables, nominal data, were calculated in percentage/frequency tables. The chi-square test statistic checked for dependency between the behavioral variables and museum size. The findings. This analysis showed the complex relationships between fund-raising systems and their philanthropic environment. The results demonstrate the strong tie between philanthropy and fund-raising. They illustrate that fund-raising cannot be an isolated management function. The data indicate how fund-raising behavior, donor attitudes, and economic conditions influence giving fluctuations. It discloses organizational donor preferences, and the control those donors might have over internal management decisions. The effects of donor networks, political lobbying, and geographic location were also detected in the figures. Conclusions. This study affirmed that persistent organizational funding requires diversified, balanced relationships between nonprofit organizations and the philanthropic sector. Children's museums need a fund-raising philosophy; voluntary giving must become a core institutional value. This philosophy must be espoused by the Chief Executive Officer who works with and through a Board President and Board of Directors who embrace the same fund-raising rationale. The organizations also need trained personnel to administer the philosophy.

Abstract:
The thesis investigates from a dual perspective the broad topic of collections management within museums. On one hand, it proposes an analysis of the largely unknown role of the museum registrar, by reporting the profile’s main characteristics and major tasks involving collection management. On the other hand, following a brief presentation of collections management processes, there will be an attempt to examine how these activities are now carried out in an almost fully automated way by means of the so-called “collections management systems” (CMSs). The thesis concludes with a short presentation of the Italian company Comwork and of their “Museum”, a software for the digital management of museums collections.

Abstract:
The discussion about museums and tourism starts from the notion that there are new emergent paradigms in our society to which museums cannot stay indifferent. Tourism and the tourist activity use the exclusivity and the singularity of places as main attraction poles of the destinations. Recent research shows that the post-modern tourist value and demands aspects such as: interactivity, authenticity, multi-sensorial experiences and emotional engagement at the places they visit. The main question is: Are there museums and their professionals answering to the visitor expectations and needs? Which are the main determinants of the touristic experience at the museum? Even at those non-profit organizations – such as museums- it is necessary to adopt a strategic thinking that enables the approach and answers to the different types of publics, but also the cooperation between museum and tourism professionals. Today the post-modern society evidences new ways of living. That is why we need new perspectives for leisure time, new ways of offering a visitor experience that answers four main dimensions: Education, Entertainment, Emotion and Experimentation (the 4 E’s of the museological experience).

With the rise of managerial aspects, such as infrastructure, industry personnel and assets of diffusion actions under their custody, he sought to understand how developed the management of museum spaces of UFPE, knowing their activities; that investments are being implemented in the sector and its origin; and what the central government participation level at the University in promoting its museums sector. The study was conducted exploratory and as a means of investigation we used the field research. Semi-structured interviews were the data collection instrument and these were treated based on content analysis suggested by Laurence Bardin. The literature also supported the study, with emphasis on recent theoretical frameworks on museum management, from the work of Manueline Cândido Duarte and Brazilian regulatory instruments, the Statute Museums and Decree 8124 of 2013. The work is structured in three chapters, which are the first topics discussed about the current challenges of managing museums and their regulatory frameworks; the second shows the search field and contextualization of the museums of UFPE; and the third shows the search results and the characterization of the panorama of the management of museums of the University. Once verified the institution a great distance between what define the legal theories and guidelines for the management of museums and the reality, there was the need for construction of a cultural heritage management policy in order to ensure the preservation and access to these goods by society.

Hammar, Jenny, and Erik Lagerborg. "Performance measurement and evaluation for cultural non-profit organisations : A model developed for Swedish museums." Thesis, Internationella Handelshögskolan, Högskolan i Jönköping, IHH, Företagsekonomi, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-35859.

Abstract:
This study highlights the difficulty for non-profit cultural organisations to measure and evaluate the performance of their operations. The goal was to suggest and test a model for performance evaluation that can be used by museums, more specifically it was developed for Swedish Museums. The theoretical framing of the study is Operations Management. With this being a practical and problem-solving research discipline, the pragmatic approach with Design Science research was chosen as the methodological foundation. Based on this strategy several research methods were used in the process of solving the problem and designing the model. Based on previous models for performance evaluation, with the adaptation to the setting of Swedish Museums a model was presented, tested and evaluated in the study. The study was delimited to the design phase and implementation was not part of the report. After having tested the model, a follow-up interview was conducted. In the interview, the test results were presented to a museum manager in order to validate that the model can be used as a tool for decision support and as a way to report non-financial results to stakeholders such as politicians or their representatives.

Mills, Cory C. "Olfaction and Exhibition| Assessing the Impact of Scent in Museums on Exhibit Engagement, Learning and Empathy." Thesis, Florida Atlantic University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10610506.

Full text
Abstract:

The aim of this investigation is to analyze the effects of incorporating scent-based elements in ethnographic exhibits. Specifically, it attempts to identify changes in patron response to a visual display, with and without a scent element. Groups of patrons were observed throughout their engagement with the exhibit, and interviewed post-engagement to generate data on information retention, opinion on content and empathetic response in relation to the exhibit. Findings suggest that the inclusion of scent did increase memorization of the limited facts reinforced through the scent element. However, there was no detectable difference between the groups on measures of overall comprehension of the subject matter, nor their empathetic responses toward the exhibited culture. The results of the study are discussed as a measure of the observer—observed dichotomy, and the argument is made that multisensory representation in the museum can aid in the facilitation of cross-cultural education.

The study of historic-period pottery cuts across many disciplines (e.g., historical archaeology, material culture studies, American studies, art history, decorative arts, fine arts). Studies of historic pottery with provenience from the United States are largely centered on fine-bodied wares, such as porcelain, white salt-glazed stoneware, creamware, pearlware, whiteware, ironstone (or white granite), and kaolin smoking pipes. These wares share the common attribute of whiteness: white paste and painted, slipped, or printed decoration that typically incorporate the color white into its motif. Disenfranchised groups had limited direct-market access to these wares due to its high value (Miller 1980, 1991). White pottery was disproportionately consumed by White people until the nineteenth century. This dissertation examines colonoware—an earth-toned, non-white, polythetic kind of coarse earthenware. Archaeologists commonly encounter colonoware in plantation contexts and believe that colonoware was crafted by Native American, African, and African American potters between the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries (Deetz 1999; Espenshade and Kennedy 2002:210; Gerth and Kingsley 2014; Heite 2002; Madsen 2005:107). Colonoware researchers have engaged with collections and archaeologically excavated samples from the lower Middle Atlantic, American Southeast and Caribbean for over fifty years since the “discovery” of the pottery at Colonial Williamsburg—then called “Colono-Indian Ware”—by Ivor Noël Hume (1962). Comparatively less research has been conducted on colonoware with American Northeast provenience (see Catts 1988; Sansevere 2017). This dissertation “excavates” evidence of Northeastern colonoware that has been deeply buried—buried within obscure literature, buried by centuries of soil accrual only recently moved by compliance archaeology, and buried by the fifty-something-year-old myth that colonoware was only manufactured and used in the lower Middle Atlantic, American Southeast and Caribbean. The lives of northern bondsmen have been largely concealed in the historical record, yet these individuals were clearly a very visible part of northern society and the examination of northern colonoware helps tell that story. The circumstances that precipitated the excavation of northern sites that contain colonoware, the individuals who chose to collect northern colonoware, and my own experience accessing northern colonoware collections shapes how knowledge of the past is made, provides perspective on the mechanisms that control access to heritage, demonstrates how bias is created in object-based research, and reveals the politics at play. Lastly, I speculate that colonoware contained significant meaning for northern users between the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries and discuss the changing value of this non-white pottery in contemporaneous society.

Perez-Alvaro, Elena. "Challenging the taken-for-granted in the management of underwater cultural heritage : ethical and legal perspectives." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6178/.

Full text
Abstract:
Management of cultural heritage depends on ethical decisions. These ethical decisions will bestow the heritage with a value and will protect it by establishing legal frameworks. However, sometimes, these legal frameworks can have the opposite effect and damage the heritage if they are not continuously revised and updated according to the new ethical challenges of the development in the field of cultural heritage. Although underwater cultural heritage has a legislative element that protects it from the relatively minor threat of treasure hunters, it pays little attention to ethical concerns that expose the heritage to more serious menaces. This study proposes (contrary to the traditional view of land heritage management as an example to underwater heritage management) a new vision where underwater cultural heritage challenges principles that in land heritage management have been taken for granted: valuation, use, management and preservation. The work presents four case studies as models both for illustrating the key ethical issues and for offering solutions: the violin of the Titanic, ancient lead for particle physics experiments, watery graves and the effects of climate change on underwater cultural heritage. Finally this work explores themes of value, ethics and the process in which a common object becomes heritage.

Kozak, Zenobia. "Promoting the past, preserving the future : British university heritage collections and identity marketing." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/408.

Abstract:
Collections of tangible heritage and material culture found in university museums present both challenges and opportunities for their parent institutions. The identification and recognition of objects and collections of material ‘heritage’ proves difficult to universities, due to the formation and utilisation of their collections. Although each university possesses a history of varied content, length and significance, the rich heritage collections kept by universities remain undefined and largely unknown. This thesis addresses new and changing roles for university museums and collections, focusing on the issues surrounding heritage. What purpose does an institutional collection of academic heritage serve beyond preserving or representing the history of a university? Using data collected during the field research programme and two case studies (University of St Andrews and University of Liverpool) the thesis explores the definition and role of heritage in the university. Through the exploration of these topics, the thesis provides a new model for university collecting institutions based on the concept of ‘university heritage’ and ‘institutional identity’, encompassing collections ranging from subject-specific departmental teaching collections to commemorative collections of fine art. By utilising these once undefined and underappreciated collections, universities can use the heritage objects and material culture representative of their academic history and traditions as institutional promotion to potential students, staff and funding bodies.
