Abstract:
Baseball and rap music are often not considered culturally or historically synonymous, but a shift appears underway. This research examines how 239 rap lyrics reach across the formerly confined (mostly racialized) boundaries of baseball to engage the sport through its reference to 128 baseball players. A thematic analysis explores how the languages of baseball and rap culture intersect through linguistic translation. The authors develop a broad understanding of the positive and negative “baller” references, and how it could affect the future growth of baseball role models for Black youth athle

Residents adjacent to and up to one and a half miles from the ROC have reported disturbances from sound generated by the facility both inside and outside of their homes. A sound study was undertaken to understand these concerns and to make recommendations for thresholds to be used to balance the desire for facility events with the concerns of nearby residents and

This article takes the opportunity to reflect on future situations in which virtual musicians are traded like baseball cards, associated content-creator and autonomous musical agent rights, and the musical and moral conundrums that may result. Although many scenarios presented here may seem far-fetched with respect to the current level of artificial intelligence, it remains prudent and artistically stimulating to consider them. Abstract In this day and age a continuous flow of ideas and culture takes place, which is part of the globalisation process. These exchanges influence the development of a transcultural literature. Murakami Haruki is not only a transcultural writer, but one of the most popular and internationally acclaimed authors of contemporary Japanese literature who has changed the literary scene in Japan since the publication of his debut novel Kaze no uta o kike (Hear the Wind Sing). Abstract The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s in art, music, and literature brought pulsating black cultural life to the attention of many Americans. to some whites this cultural outpouring revealed that blacks had particular talents; but to most it merely established a new black stereotype--the exotic African, the uninhibited, emotional, irrepressive, immoral, alarmingly phallic stranger. Nativism became a major force, and the Ku Klux Klan revived. One Klavern even tried to get the owner of the Cincinnati Reds to declare Sunday, July 20, 1924, Klan Day at the park and permit the Klan, 40,000 s

Abstract Music is a difficult business. Many players compete for a small number of positions. Yet, this circumstance does not and should not deter legions of young people every year from applying to music schools for study. Each of these young people has a dream—usually to play in a professional symphony orchestra—that will probably not be realized. But it is not such an unlikely dream—it is not like dreaming of walking on the moon; it is like wanting to play major league baseball or to sing on Broadway. These are ambitious goals, but hundreds of people do sing on Broadway and hundreds do play

So the field of study for the many versions, variations, and subdisciplines that make up psychology includes such activities as solving problems, resolving disputes, making friends, remembering one’s mother’s birthday, playing cards, watching baseball games, listening to music, picking out the smoothest stone, being in pain, being sad, imagining winning the lottery, and so on. Chapter 1 begins with a detailed historical account of rock radio station WLUP’s 1979 Disco Demolition Night promotion at Comiskey Stadium. The infamous event, at which baseball fans detonated a pile of disco records, was a flashpoint that presaged the codification of Chicago house music as a distinct set of cultural practices and sounds. Building on the work of urban cultural historians studying Chicago’s Black and brown cultural economies (Mumford, 1997; Heap, 2010; Green, 2007), this chapter historicizes the geographic and social frameworks that gave rise to house by showing how the demolit

The period of time beginning in the late 1890s and continuing into the early twentieth century represented perhaps the lowest point of race relations in America, an era that some historians refer to as the Nadir. During this time, Black people were summarily stripped of their right to vote and hold office, and state constitutions were rewritten to take away the franchise through poll taxes, literacy tests, and other devices.
