Full textListening to music is an activity that provides a range of physical and psychological benefits (e.g., tension relief, decreased depression) for people across cultures and age groups. Adolescents, specifically, are among the most active consumers of music, and music appears to be a natural coping strategy for this age group. Research suggests that both music and the family context play important roles during the developmental phase of adolescence. Family transitions such as divorce have become increasingly common experiences for adolescents and may have long-lasting negative effects on an adolescent’s emotional well-being. However, research regarding music-based interventions for use with adolescents experiencing family conflicts or transitions is limited. Thus, this project involved the creation of a resource manual designed to help mental health professionals implement music-based interventions in their work with adolescents coping with family conflict or parental divorce. The development of the manual was informed by a review of the literature about music therapy, adolescents, and families, as well as by questionnaires completed by three certified music therapists, and this author’s own clinical experiences. The data was then integrated and synthesized into a comprehensive resource manual, which was evaluated by three clinicians who are not trained music therapists for its efficacy, relevance, and user-friendliness. Feedback for the manual was collected via an evaluation form. Results indicated that the manual may be a useful supplemental tool for mental health professionals. Strengths, weaknesses, and suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

Full textD.M.A
My final project for the D.M.A. in composition consists of a Requiem Mass honoring the victims of the Iraqi war, a conflict that has stirred public debate since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. It is not meant as a political statement; rather, it is intended as a tribute in the broadest sense--not only for the combatants who lost their lives, but also for the innocent citizens caught in the cross-fire, all the families left in grief, and the returning soldiers whose lives were altered if not shattered by the experience of war. It speaks to the devastating toll war has on society in general. The Requiem lasts approximately 56 minutes. Except for the Sanctus, the seven movements of the work are all performed contiguously. It is scored for mixed chorus; SSAATBB, a solo, coloratura soprano, solo tenor and orchestra (3333 2431, 2 harps, percussion and strings). Mass for a Time of War reflects a broad array of stylistic impulses from the medieval through the present day, all the while transcending the boundaries of the various musical gestures and resources. These influences include: Schoenberg's signature hexachord pair (012569) (013478), the tone row from Webern's Op. 21 Symphony (1928), Charles Ives's The Unanswered Question (1906), Stravinsky's Requiem Canticles (1966), Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time (1941), Franz Liszt's Via Crucis (LW J33) and the Kyrie from Haydn's Mass in C major, Paukenmesse (Hob. XXII: 9). Techniques of contrafactum, serialism, including a section of total serialization as well as an aleatoric passage, are of structural importance in the work. Several new compositional methods developed for the Credo include the use of a matrix multiplier on rhythmic and tone rows to produce a new row--albeit a tonal one--and a procedure the author calls "rhythmic resonances." In Mass for a Time of War, texts and chants from the Missa pro defunctis [Mass for the Dead] are interwoven with Czeslaw Milosz's poem Meaning, and serve as structural scaffolding throughout. The choices of additional texts and what the author terms "musical subtexts" that surround the scaffolding of the Latin are selected and positioned to heighten the unfolding narrative. The texts from the Mass for the Dead anchors the Requiem, while the emotional thrust is guided by Milosz's Meaning. Although the Latin texts are deeply religious, they have been taken from their familiar context by aligning them with prose and poetry. It was not intended to remove their religious connotations, but to instead expand their significance to a metaphoric stature. Additional texts include Emily Dickinson's stark poem on death, LXXVI, several lines from Rainer Maria Rilke's The Ninth Duino Elegy, texts from Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra, The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, Dexter Filkin's The Forever War, texts in both the Ancient Greek and English translation of Homer's Iliad, Erich Maria Remarcque's All Quiet on the Western Front, several texts from The New York Times Magazine and New Yorker Magazine articles, as well as the names of victims on both sides of the war. The arrangement of the texts and subtexts are consciously meant to imitate "cut-up" poetry or fiction, also called découpage, a form that takes small sections of words from existing poems as well as additional texts, such as those from newspapers and magazines and rearranges them to create new poems or other texts. The dichotomy of tonal and atonal impulses, compositional constructs that informed other of my compositions, form some structural basis for the work. Choice of these and other musical procedures is not arbitrary. They are not reasons in themselves, or meant to form a new mode of expression or imitate a particular musical style. Rather they support a dramatic narrative with deep resonances and historical allusion, one that draws the listener into the emotional substance of the difficult, often brutal dilemmas of war that humankind has wrestled and struggled with since before the printed word.

Full textThis work aims to analyze the process of constitution and development of several associative forms adopted by organizations of agricultural workers in the city of Lago do Junco - MA, particularly those allied to a major organization called Associa??o em ?reas de Assentamento no Estado do Maranh?o - ASSEMA. These associations were created in Lago do Junco within the years of 1989 and 1991, by the end of a period of intense and violent agrarian conflicts involving, from one side, a number of peasant villages and, from another, great land owners. Since the decade of 1970, changes in the preaching methods conducted by religious adepts of the Theology of the Liberation, added to the process of land expropriation that affected hundreds of peasant families, stimulated a collective response by rural workers to the process of land privatization. Most of the agrarian conflicts were solved by the end of the decade of 1980, with the establishment of Agrarian Reform settlements for the peasant population. From then on, in this region, the associative forms became a preferred modality of organization adopted by agricultural worker families, as means of ensuring their permanence on their lands. Through analyzing the consequence of the existence and the influence of associations linked to ASSEMA for the living in the studied towns, we noticed a certain ambivalence by which they are experienced by agricultural workers. Such ambivalence is related to the tensions occurred during certain periods, such as those referred to the procedures that made possible to afford selective advantages to their associates and the ones which triggered a deep degree of socioeconomic differentiation inside the villages. Also, conflicts emerged from the principles of conduct and affiliation demanded by the organizations for those who benefited from them, affiliated or not.

The academic field of music education has been consolidating significantly in the last 30 years. This period, in turn, has been marked by profound social changes: economic crises that appears in increasingly smaller intervals; the deepening of social inequality; the remarkable fragmentation that ravages individuals and the reflux of the organization of the explored classes; the mass diffusion of individualistic and conservative political ideologies, the process of intensive implementation of the Capital and its determinants through the deepening of economic globalization. Given this complex scenario, emerges a problem that has been poorly treated by our field: how does music education fit into this context? How the social determinants of our time affects music-education? Thus, the goal of this dissertation is to analyze the relationship between music education, the struggle between Labor and Capital and the construction of social being nowadays. I proposed the following specific objectives: to characterize the conflict between Labor and Capital; to point out how the political ideologies of capitalism, from those that advocate its reproduction to those that argue for its overcome them, influences human praxis, in particular education; to think about the characteristics of music education today, its possibilities and challenges before our historical time; and identify how the critique of capital has been developed by researchers of the field. I employed as the main critical-analytical references the historical and dialectical materialism and the Marxian- Lukacsian ontology. I conclude by arguing that the analysis of the field of music education, taking into account the limits of this practice, enables a significant deepening of understanding of the current configuration of our society. However, critical analyzes performed to date and circulated by the academic journal Revista da ABEM, published by the Associação Brasileira de Educação Musical, offer only partial critiques to the relationship between music education and the determinants of capitalist society, which demonstrates the need to resume the critique of social totality, an essential characteristic of the Marxist critical ontology.

Full textThis thesis endeavours to study pipe bands as a cultural practice in contemporary "post-conflict" Northern Irish society. By approaching music as an everyday practice and a repeated opportunity for exchange and interaction, this work seeks to evaluate how it contributes to the formation and renewal of collective norms and values. As Northern Ireland emerges from a conflict that continues to shape social relations and political life, this work also aims at approaching, through cultural practices, the dynamics of conflict transformation. Through this standpoint, this thesis whishes to consider the products of musical socialization in response to the legacy of conflict. Music as a practice is also thought of as allowing an action on the world and a reinvention of conflict

Full textThis research contributes to understand the concept of social fabric and its relationship with the field of collective music for the construction of peace. The research aimed to identify the contributions of the collective musical spaces with victims of the armed conflict to the reconstruction of the social fabric of its participants. Specifically, he focused on the Music for Reconciliation program of the National Batuta Foundation in Colombia. Through the methodology of life stories, the research approached 17 families participating in the musical and psycho-social training spaces of four different musical centers in the country. The investigation finds that the armed conflict and the processes of forced displacement after violent experiences leave families with human, economic and social losses that generate a high distrust and lead them to isolation. The foregoing generates a non-place where the subject breaks its link with society. The collective musical space manages to generate the conditions to provide participants with a temporary musical identity that gives them back their social place contributing to emotional relief, the reconstruction of their networks and the circulation of cohesive intangible resources that allow self-confidence and the rest.
