Abstract:
ABSTRACT Setabuhan is a musical group consisting of three people who have different musical concepts from the others. The form of Setabuhan group music is rhythmic or percussion music in which two people are percussionists, and the other plays the exploration of vocal sound. The musical instruments used by Setabuhan are drums, percussion and vocal music using digital effects. The form of music used by this Setabuhan music group is not commonly used in structural forms of musical compositions because it does not use melodic musical instruments, and the vocal music does not have lyrics. The form of the Setabuhan group performance is a collaboration of rhythmic music with the arts of Pencak Silat, or martial arts. The rhythm and tempo of the beats tend to be loud with a fast rhythmic game. This group becomes very interesting and has particular characteristics because not many musical groups have the same concept as Setabuhan . The Setabuhan music group is not well known in Indonesia but has performed many performances in various other countries. The focus of the research on the Setabuhan music group is: 1) The form of Setabuhan music performances; and 2) The creativity of the Setabuhan music group. The research method used in this research is qualitative with descriptive exposure. The research subjects were musicians of the Setabuhan music group in Yogyakarta. Data collection techniques were observation, interviews, documentation, and data analysis. The results show that the form and creativity of the Setabuhan music group lie in the rhythmic drum and percussion music playing, which is filled with exploration of vocal sounds with musical effects and collaboration with the art of Pencak Silat. The conclusion of this research is the form and creativity process of the Setabuhan music group, which is very interesting and has the characteristics of its work and form of performance.ABSTRAK Setabuhan merupakan kelompok musik yang terdiri dari tiga orang yang mempunyai konsep musik yang berbeda dari yang lain. ABSTRACT
This paper describes the survival of the Minang Orchestra music today, specifically the Taman Bunga Orchestra Music Group in the city of Padangpanjang, West Sumatra Province. In the midst of the onslaught of market-oriented music industry. Using the premise of Gramsci's Counter Hegemony, how this group survives with their musical ideology. The research relies on a descriptive qualitative approach. The analysis in the perspective of Music Anthropology explains deeply and holistically the survival of this musical group. Counter Hegemony as an analytical tool in seeing what motivates this group to choose the genre of Minang orchestra music and the survival of this group in facing the current music industry. The findings show that the ideological struggle between this group's ideology and the market ideology is getting stronger, indicating the presence of hegemonic power in the music industry market in Indonesia. Persistence in their musical ideology is able to survive by not disrupting or changing the shape of their music. The principle of kinship is the main capital for the survival of this musical group.

Abstract:
<strong>Abstract</strong> This experimental research aims to investigate the impact of music training on students&#39; cognitive abilities. The study involved two distinct groups: an experimental group and a control group. Both groups underwent pre and post-cognitive ability assessments. The experimental group received a three-month music training intervention between the pre and post-assessments, whereas the control group did not receive any music training. It was found that, even prior to the music training intervention; the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher cognitive abilities compared to the control group, with a statistical significance at the .05 level. Now, after music training was given to the experimental group, their cognitive abilities exhibited a remarkable increase, reaching statistical significance at the more stringent .01 level, when compared to the control group who had no music training. The study also revealed that when examining only the experimental group, a significant improvement in cognitive abilities was observed when comparing their performance before and after the music training. Conversely, no discernible enhancement in cognitive abilities was noted with the control group across the two assessments, as they did not partake in any music training between the pre and post-tests of cognitive abilities. These findings conclusively establish that music training has a demonstrable influence on enhancing students&#39; cognitive abilities.

Abstract:
Background: Music interventions are promising therapies for the management of symptoms in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Globally, music interventions can be classified as active or receptive depending on the participation of the subjects. Active and receptive music tasks engage different brain areas that might result in distinctive clinical effects. This study aims to compare the clinical effects of two types of music interventions and a control activity. Methods: Ninety AD patients from six nursing homes participated in the study. Nursing homes were randomly and blindly assigned to receive either active music intervention, receptive music intervention, or the usual care. Effects on cognition, behaviour, daily living activities, and motor function were assessed. Results: Active music intervention improved cognition, behaviour, and functional state in a higher extent than both receptive music intervention and usual care. The effect size of active music intervention for cognitive deficits and behavioural symptoms was large (η2 = 0.62 and 0.61, respectively), while for functional state, it was small-to-medium sized (η2 = 0.18). Receptive music intervention had a stabilizing effect on behavioural symptoms compared to control intervention (mean change from baseline ± standard deviation = −0.76 ± 3.66 and 3.35 ± 3.29, respectively). In the active music intervention, the percentage of patients who showed improvement in cognitive deficits (85.7), behavioural symptoms (92.9), and functional state (46.4) was higher than in both receptive listening (11.8, 42.9, and 14.3, respectively) and control group (6.3, 12.2, and 17.1, respectively). Conclusions: Active music intervention is useful to improve symptoms of AD and should be prescribed as a complement to the usual treatment.

Abstract:
Buss (in Baron &amp; Richardson, 2004) says that aggressive behavior is an action that aims to hurt others. The highest aggression behavior is occur when the adolescence developed itself time to time, especially at ages 14 to 18 years (Farrel et al., 2005; Karriker-Jaffe, Foshee, Ennett, &amp; Suchindram, 2009). Music therapy is a healing process that uses music media to meet physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs in individuals of all ages (AMTA, 2005). Music therapy is predicted can be reduce aggressive behavior in adolescence, as evidenced by various previous studies. The purpose of this research is to determine the result of the decreasing aggressive behavior toward the adolescence in Jakarta. In this study, researchers included 30 students at SMA X, Jakarta using purposive-ciretrion sampling and quota sampling techniques. Participants were divided into 3 groups, and the groups are; (a) active music therapy group, (b) passive music therapy group, and (c) control group. The design of this experiment is using a true experiment with three-group pretest-posttest, which analyzes data with ANOVA test. The results showed that music therapy can significantly reduce aggressive behavior (p &lt;0.05). This shows that both active music therapy and passive music therapy can be applied to reduce aggressive behavior in adolescence.

Behr, Adam. "Group identity : bands, rock and popular music." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/3051.

Abstract:
Since rock became the subject of academic study, its attendant ideology has been scrutinised and its mythical and Romantic components exposed. Largely absent from this account has been a thorough analysis of the phenomenon of the ‘band’. The role of individual acts and the wider contexts in which they worked has been discussed at the expense of an examination of an important form of music-making. This thesis seeks to address that gap. Using a mixture of literary research and ethnography, I present an overall picture of the band as a modus operandum, charting its evolution during the emergence of rock and presenting evidence that it has become a key means by which people enter and engage with the field of popular music. I suggest that debates about ‘authenticity’ in rock, in seeking to see through industry rhetoric have overlooked the way in which creativity in bands is closely connected to social interaction. My historical analysis brings to light the way in which the group- identified band has become embedded into popular music practice through the power of narratives. Two case studies, contextualised with archival material and interviews, form the basis for a model for collective creativity. By demonstrating how social action and narrative myth feed into one another, I argue that the group identity of a band is the core of the industrially mediated texts to which audiences respond. Our understanding of how authenticity is ascribed in popular music, and rock in particular, has paid too much attention to genre-based arguments and not enough to musical and social methods. I propose a way of revising this to take better account of rock as an actual practice.

Sangiorgio, Andrea. "Collaborative creativity in music education : children's interactions in group creative music making." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/20648.

Full text
Abstract:
This study intended to develop a theoretical framework for understanding children's collaborative creativity in music. The focus was on creative interactions and on how early primary children interact when they engage in creative group music making. Related questions were on: 1) the different communicative media employed, 2) the component aspects of group work influencing children's creative endeavours, 3) the meanings that children attribute to their creative experience, and 4) the educational and ethical values of creative interactions. The study was carried out in a private music school in Rome, Italy. A group of eight 5-7-year-old children participated over eight months in 30 weekly sessions of group creative activities in music and movement. I was the teacher researcher and worked with a co-teacher. This exploratory, interpretive inquiry was framed by sociocultural perspectives on learning and creativity. A qualitative research methodology was adopted, which combined methodological elements derived from case study research, ethnographic approaches, and practitioner research. Data collection methods included participant observation, video-recording of sessions, documentation, and strategies for eliciting children's meanings. Thematic analysis, both theory-driven and data-driven, was conducted in order to identify relevant issues. The findings of the study suggest that in creative collaborative work in music bodily interactions and musical interactions have a stronger significance than verbal interactions. A conceptual distinction was made between 'cooperative' vs 'collaborative' which helped to characterise the different degrees of interactivity in the group's creative work. The study identified a range of component aspects which influenced the quality and productivity of children's collaborative interactions. These included: children's characteristics, context and setting, pedagogical approach, task design, collaboratively emergent processes, underlying tensions in creative learning, reflection on and evaluation of creative work, and time. Children actively gave meaning to their group creative music making mostly in terms of imagery and narrative, though they were gradually shifting towards more purely musical conceptualisations. Creating music in groups had the potential to enhance their sense of competence, ownership and belonging, and supported ethical values such as promoting the person, freedom, responsibility, a multiplicity of perspectives, and democracy. Three meta-themes run throughout the findings of the study, which are in line with sociocultural perspectives: i) a systems perspective as necessary to gain a more comprehensive view of collaborative creativity; ii) creativity as an inherently social phenomenon, and iii) creativity as processual and emergent. The implications for pedagogical practice highlight the importance of including creative collaborative activities in the music curriculum.

Abstract:
The context of this study is a street shelter, situated in the inner city of Pretoria. This was the first time that music therapy sessions were conducted at the shelter. This study is conducted within a qualitative research paradigm. The primary data source is five video and one audio excerpt. The secondary data source is session notes. The data is coded, categorised and organised into emergent themes. The emergent themes highlight five aspects of group music therapy that enabled autonomy in a group of children living in the street shelter. These five emergent themes are the basis of the discussion addressing the two research questions of this study. This study shows that group music therapy is an effective and appropriate way in which these sheltered street children are able to experience autonomy, including improved self-esteem and feelings of achievement and mastery. To my knowledge, there has been no music therapy literature published with regards to group music therapy with sheltered street children within the South African context as well as internationally.<br>Dissertation (MMus)--University of Pretoria, 2009.<br>gm2014<br>Music<br>Unrestricted

Abstract:
Abstract Sara Wall: The Real Group-Evolution  of Sound. Institutionen for musikvetenskap, Uppsala universitet, 2002. 60 p.  The purpose of this thesis is to track the cause of The Real Group's evolution of sound by means of analyzing song recordings from three chronologically  selected albums. The areas of components used for the analysis are self-formulated and based on a variety of material and sources. In order to heighten the reader's understanding of the relatively new and abstract term, sound is described within the realm of pop and rock and applied to a cappellajazz. This is mainly accomplished with the help ofFer-Erik Brolinson and Holger Larsen's  previous studies within the realm of rock. Certain sound components from their analysis have been selected for use in my analysis. In my thesis, the history of a cappella is overviewed, as is the history of The Real Group. Lennart Reimers' essay from Choral music perspectives  is used in combination with American Richard Sparks' book The Swedish Choral Miracle:  Swedish A Cappella Music Since 1945 to describe how The Real Group has been affected by the Swedish a cappella tradition. Reimers'  presents three sets of"isms" that contribute to the formation of the Swedish a cappella tradition and Sparks bases his six components  on Reimers' "isms." The analysis of the songs is based on the following areas of components:  Vocal skill, Choice of repertoire, Diction, Effects processing, Overall "feel" and Text content. The eight selected songs fit into the following categories: Ballads, Upbeat/fast  tempo songs and Swedish songs. The results of the study conclude that the most motivating factors of change include vocal maturity, steadily increased skill, need for musical growth and expansion and change in personal maturity and perspective. The results are highlighted  by personal accounts given by group member Feder Karlsson.

The study involved a music therapy treatment process, based on music-centered music therapy and music psychotherapy, that occurred in 16 sessions over a period of approximately four months. The study investigated the nature of the clinical process, the elements that characterized the intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics of the group, and the way participants engaged with and utilized the music in their intrapersonal and interpersonal dimensions. The research design was one originally developed by Smeijsters and Storm (1996) in which the researcher functions in an ongoing consultative role to the therapists as the therapy process proceeds. The study investigated and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of Smeijsters and Storm’s (1996) model. The analyses of the 16 sessions revealed that all the studied clients were able to operate, in terms of intra-relationship, according to Greenspan and Wieder’s (2006) first developmental stage: they demonstrated interest, curiosity, and initiative. In terms of inter-relationship, they were able to operate according to Greenspan and Wieder’s (2006) developmental second stage: they engaged and established relationship with others. It was concluded that music had a relevant role in the process of assessing, treating, and evaluating the individuals in the group.<br>Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
The possibilities and specific features of enhancing the efficiency of the educational interaction that penetrates the whole educational process by involving children in active musical activities as early as possible have been poorly explored in Lithuania so far. The aim of the research is to highlight educational preconditions of involving 3–4-year-old children in group musical activities by implementation Batia Strauss’s Method of Active Listening to Music in practice with a group of children in early childhood music education. The participants included fifteen children from a kindergarten in Kaunas district (Lithuania). The conducted qualitative case research help to distinguish the following educational preconditions of involving 3–4-year-old children in group musical activities using Strauss’s Method of Active Listening to Music: to feel and express contrasting rhythms through simulated, emotional body movements while listening to music; to conceive and demonstrate spontaneous body movements while listening to music; and to listen to music and express it through artistic expression and language. The aforesaid preconditions are considered as generalised and conceptualised research findings and enrich the didactics of early childhood music education based on reflective thinking, mediation, meta-comments and co-learning principles.

Dairianathan, Eugene, Larry Francis Hilarian, Peter Stead, Chee Hoo Lum, and Hoon Hong Ng. Learning through popular music, lessons for the general music programme syllabus in Singapore. Abstract:
This project sought to investigate the identity, role and function of popular music within classroom-based education in Singapore. Popular music is characterised by: (i) lnterdisclplinarity (music, dance, poetry, theatre, etc); (ii) It suffuses the lives of school-going youth in their out-of-school curriculum. (iii) Skill acquisition is frequently gained through more informal learning than is usual in institutional settings (Green, 2002). (iv) Participation in popular music by various communities seems to cut across ethnic, religious and age boundaries, which makes popular music participation an interesting study in social integration. (v) Engaging in popular music potentially provides students life-long engagement The impact of popular music in the classroom has not been fully explored. Creating, performing and responding to popular music genres arguably act as an apt medium of and for self expression considering the complex nature of an ever-shifting demographic mix and strategies to bring about more effective social integration across communities-of-practice (Wenger 1998) engaging the later cosmopolitan society in Singapore. The GMP (2008) document supports the value of popular music beginning with musical skills of composing, improvising and recreating extending to identity formation and multiplicity in identity negotiation in group dynamics (MOE 2008, pp. 7-10). Current broader educational aims are to develop creative, imaginative and socio-culturally well-tempered individuals and popular music has an important educational role to play in this respect. Dairianathan and Lum (2010) have discovered how popular musics re/iterate their place in the music curriculum for music as lived and living space. Secondary factors crucial to this research are: (a) to examine the place of popular music in local public and international schools across Singapore, (b) to draw out the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for school-going youth to be engaged in popular music and (c) to critically examine popular music immersion in relation to the objectives established in the GMP syllabus (MOE 2008).

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: Will music therapy be effective compared to other modalities for the control of dental anxiety and fear in pediatric patients aged 4 to 6 years who come to the dental office for the first time? Condition being studied: Music therapy is a non-pharmaceutical intervention used in medical and educational settings to provide feelings of physical and mental well-being. Therefore, people who receive music therapy experience greater motivation and ability to develop defense mechanisms against anxiety. The population group of greatest interest are children from 4 to 6 years of age, who are the ones who experience the greatest anxiety and fear when going to a dental office.

Abstract:
Northern Irish hip hop group Kneecap have been causing controversy as they have rose to fame. At the core of their music is the fight to keep the Irish language alive. They have made waves in music scenes across the world and in doing so, they have given young Northern Irish people a voice when representation has become so important. However, they satirise Unionist politics and for some, stir up painful memories of violence which plagued Northern Ireland up until the 1990s. This blogpost explores Kneecap’s provocative politics and their fight for Irish language rights in Northern Ireland via controversial performances, imagery and lyrics. Speaking to the post-peace generation, Kneecap have been injecting energy into Irish speaking youth, but is their approach making new progress or turning back the clock?

Pedersen, Gjertrud. Symphonies Reframed. Norges Musikkhøgskole, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.22501/nmh-ar.481294.

Full text
Abstract:
Symphonies Reframed recreates symphonies as chamber music. The project aims to capture the features that are unique for chamber music, at the juncture between the “soloistic small” and the “orchestral large”. A new ensemble model, the “triharmonic ensemble” with 7-9 musicians, has been created to serve this purpose. By choosing this size range, we are looking to facilitate group interplay without the need of a conductor. We also want to facilitate a richness of sound colours by involving piano, strings and winds. The exact combination of instruments is chosen in accordance with the features of the original score. The ensemble setup may take two forms: nonet with piano, wind quartet and string quartet (with double bass) or septet with piano, wind trio and string trio. As a group, these instruments have a rich tonal range with continuous and partly overlapping registers. This paper will illuminate three core questions: What artistic features emerge when changing from large orchestral structures to mid-sized chamber groups? How do the performers reflect on their musical roles in the chamber ensemble? What educational value might the reframing unfold? Since its inception in 2014, the project has evolved to include works with vocal, choral and soloistic parts, as well as sonata literature. Ensembles of students and professors have rehearsed, interpreted and performed our transcriptions of works by Brahms, Schumann and Mozart. We have also carried out interviews and critical discussions with the students, on their experiences of the concrete projects and on their reflections on own learning processes in general. Chamber ensembles and orchestras are exponents of different original repertoire. The difference in artistic output thus hinges upon both ensemble structure and the composition at hand. Symphonies Reframed seeks to enable an assessment of the qualities that are specific to the performing corpus and not beholden to any particular piece of music. Our transcriptions have enabled comparisons and reflections, using original compositions as a reference point. Some of our ensemble musicians have had first-hand experience with performing the original works as well. Others have encountered the works for the first time through our productions. This has enabled a multi-angled approach to the three central themes of our research. This text is produced in 2018.

Abstract:
Geelong and the Surf Coast are treated here as one entity although there are marked differences between the two communities. Sitting on the home of the Wathaurong Aboriginal group, this G21 region is geographically diverse. Geelong serviced a wool industry on its western plains, while manufacturing and its seaport past has left it as a post-industrial city. The Surf Coast has benefitted from the sea change phenomenon. Both communities have fast growing populations and have benefitted from their proximity to Melbourne. They are deeply integrated with this major urban centre. The early establishment of digital infrastructure proved an advantage to certain sectors. All creative industries are represented well in Geelong while many creatives in Torquay are embedded in the high profile and economically dominant surfing industry. The Geelong community is serviced well by its own creative industries with well-established advertising firms, architects, bookshops, gaming arcades, movie houses, music venues, newspaper headquarters, brand new and iconic performing and visual arts centres, libraries and museums, television and radio all accessible in its refurbished downtown area. Co-working spaces, collective practices and entrepreneurial activity are evident throughout the region.

Abstract:
This report focuses on approximately thirty French markets, contributing to local debates and research as part of the Global Media and Internet Concentration Project (GMICP). It explores the dynamics of diversified economic players in cultural industries (press, audiovisual, books, music), emphasizing the coexistence of 'traditional' and 'new' entrants. The study provides sector-based and global analyses, revealing a dual dynamic of diversification and concentration in the production, distribution, and broadcasting of cultural and information content. Audiovisual content broadcasting, both free and pay, demonstrates national dominance but faces challenges from foreign groups. Financialization and concentration affect media and cultural goods industries, posing risks to diversity of opinion. The dominance of North American groups in digital services, particularly in advertising, is noted, impacting traditional media revenues. Telecom operators lead the French market, with regulators monitoring concentration dynamics for potential negative impacts on diversity.
