Abstract:
The promotion of mental well-being is an overarching aim of music therapy as a psychosocial practice. Music therapy is offered from a key principle that central to a person’s well-being is their need for meaningful relating. Music therapy can offer an alternative pathway of expression and connection with others that can help develop one’s capacity to engage with and maintain relationships outside of the therapeutic work. Music therapy can be offered as a stand-alone therapeutic process or as an adjunct to other standard mental health treatment. In the early years of music therapy’s development as a profession in Europe, Australia, and the US, it was introduced in large institutions through programmes that focused on the treatment of mental illness. Music therapy has now become a diverse practice that encompasses preventative care through community based models, wellness programmes, as well as continuing to provide services within mental health care contexts.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of a music-centered model of music therapy entitled Aesthetic Music Therapy (AeMT). AeMT was developed over many years of practice and theoretical reflection not only as a music-centered approach to therapeutic work, but also as a way to consider the myriad means by which humans experience the world of self and others. By placing AeMT within the framework of other present-day music therapy models, the need for music-centered thinking to be considered equal to those of medicine, community, and psychotherapy is endorsed. By expanding our knowledge and use of diverse musical cultures, music therapy will remain at the forefront of contemporary theories in both the field of health and the arts.

Abstract:
Legal and illicit substance use disorders are common conditions associated with substantial impairment in health as well as social and occupational functioning. Integrative medicine proposes modalities that offer promise for increasing the likelihood of undertaking treatment for substance use as well as retaining individuals in treatment. Of the integrative therapies discussed, mindfulness-based therapies have both the greatest number of and most rigorous studies for substance use disorders. Mindfulness-based therapies can significantly reduce the consumption of tobacco, alcohol, and other substances compared to control conditions. Complementary therapies reviewed include acupuncture, mindfulness-based practices, exercise, yoga, biofeedback and neurofeedback, art and music therapy, as well as diet and dietary supplements, both herbal and vitamin. Given the high acceptability and low cost of integrative medicine interventions, studies employing these techniques as adjunctive therapies to conventional treatments should be more vigorously supported if they are well-designed and include adequate numbers of subjects.

Abstract:
Part of the Weil Integrative Medicine Library, this volume provides a rational and evidence-based approach to the integrative therapy of mental disorders, integrating the principles of alternative and complementary therapies into the principles and practice of conventional psychiatry and psychology. Integrative Psychiatry and Brain Health examines what works and what doesn’t and offers practical guidelines for physicians to incorporate integrative medicine into their practice and to advise patients on reasonable and effective therapies. The text discusses areas of controversy and identifies areas of uncertainty where future research is needed. Chapters also cite the best available evidence for both the safety and the efficacy of all therapies discussed. The information is presented in accessible and easy-to-read formats, including clinical pearls and key points.

Abstract:
Clinical Acupuncture and Ancient Chinese Medicine provides health care professionals interested in learning or practicing acupuncture the essential theoretical foundation of Chinese medicine on which an effective acupuncture therapy must be based. It describes in detail the human energetic anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and etiology for both mental and physical functions of children, men, women, and the elderly. It offers a step-by-step algorithm for diagnosing physical or mental ailments with diagnostic techniques and formulation processes and treating them with effective strategies, plans, and acupuncture techniques. Clinical Acupuncture and Ancient Chinese Medicine also presents acupuncture as an energy medicine, in contrast to modern medicine, which is a more biochemically and structurally based medicine. Both are integral parts in the spectrum of human medicine, more complementary than alternative to each other. This book helps readers to study and practice acupuncture as part of their continued medical education (CME) and as a natural expansion of their practice to provide additional care for their patients at the energetic level at which a majority of ailments lay. The content is organized in a way that parallels modern medicine so readers can more easily relate and understand concepts that may be otherwise foreign to them. This book describes human health with the belief that a human being is essentially an energetic being and that the interaction of human energy with the energy of nature and the universe is critical to maintaining a healthy life. It provides useful contents for self-care and the ancient practice of life cultivation.
