Abstract:
Music Performance
D.M.A.
Throughout the history of European art music, the desire to portray “Other” cultures has been given voice by composers by way of exoticism. The ability to depict the exotic has, for centuries, held the fascination of listeners and composers alike. In spite of this, the identification and study of exoticism as an aesthetic trend in music has not been given nearly as much attention as it deserves. Drawing from and expanding upon the work of Ralph Locke and Jonathan Bellman, I explore and illuminate some of the deeper issues that undermine the potential study of thi

The fascination for things exotic or fairytale-like occupied Ravel throughout his entre life. In fact, one can safely assume that these fascinations may have prevented him from forming some sort of mental inertia in those difficult years for him following the First World War. On writing about his Shéhárazade triptych, Ravel stated : ... in them, I have succumbed again to the profound fascination which the East has held for me since childhood.""""' Violin virtuosos Henryk Wieniawski, Ole Bull, and Pablo de Sarasate each composed short virtuosic works based on their own cultural heritage. This thesis examines the exotic elements incorporated into the character pieces by the three violinists. It draws upon contemporary literature and newspaper reviews of their performances in order to demonstrate the ways in which the violinists and their music were perceived as representative of nineteenth-century exoticism.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents case studies of two distinct Ukrainian borderland groups: the Crimean Tatars of Crimea, and the Hutsuls of the Carpathian Mountains – two human collectivities that are both, today, Ukrainian by citizenship. Both of these groups also embody dominant stereotypes of otherness in Ukraine – Hutsuls as the ideal Herderian romantic folk, and Crimean Tatars as the menacing, mysterious, “oriental” other. This dissertation traces how historical stereotypes of both of these groups as “wild” have shaped and defined their contemporary expressive cultures, specifically addressing

In Toronto and Montreal, Brazilian popular music performances constitute a context for intercultural encounter. Performances offer Brazilians the opportunity to present their culture of origin while emphasising their identification with it. The issue of representation is quite complex, however, due to the involvement of a majority of non-Brazilian musicians, audience members, artistic directors, producers, promoters, and journalists. English abstract The master's thesis deals with different representations of non-European cultures and their inhabitants in musical dramas (operas and related genres) of the eighteenth century. Firstly it gives some typical characteristics of these musical artworks in historical context (focusing on Italian and French examples especially) than it concentrates on the topic of so-called exoticism in general. The final part of the thesis which is based on three case studies formulates some typical approaches to the problem of representation of non- european cultures by analyzing musical settings,
