Full textMusic – making in bands represents a major musical practice within popular music. The objective of this work is to explore the relevance of this particular form of ensemble playing for music teaching in general. In the first part the music pedagogical discussion about popular music practics will be summarised and outlined in a retrospective way. The second part analyses the specific of band practics, so that important characteristics for an educational realization can be recognised. The balancing act between informal an formal learning, that this topic contains, will be discussed within a few pedagogical fields. The last part looks into two concepts of band practics, which will be checked for the found criteria of playing in bands

Full textThe article starts (in part I) from two theses about the impossibility of teaching classical music in the classroom and shows a solution to do so. Part II outlines the actual perspective, which is based on music and music education as and for aesthetical and cultural practice. The word “außeraustralisch” (out of australia) indicates a perspective at classical music from a foreign point of view. The crucial part III claims “characteristic qualities” as the main reference point to stage musical practice in the classroom and developes characteristical qualities of classical-romantic music in a “didactic interpretation of classical-romantic culture of music”. The development from an informal to a conventionalized and half public Hausmusik up to public concerts appears to be generic to comprehend special attitudes and concepts of this kind of music. Part IV goes one step further towards an aesthetical interpretation of classical music as it creates three drafts, which outline how to stage music in such a way, that makes characteristic qualities of classical music perceptible in the classroom. Altogether the article uses the classical music in the classroom as an exemple for a general music pedagogical approach

Full textRacism is a timeworn reality in Germany. But how does it manifest itself in the field of music education, i.e. in schoolbooks? The focus of the work is a quantitative and qualitative empirical investigation of the visual representations of black people in about forty music textbooks, approved in the federal state of Saxony (Germany). The theoretical basis of the analysis are concepts of Paul Mecheril and Stuart Hall (amongst others). 'Africa Bling Bling Hakuna Matata' shows how unequal power relations are (re) produced in music textbooks by referring to potentially racist and stereotyping myths: Black people are not shown in class scenes and are therefore not thought of as subjects of but as objects for educational purposes. In terms of 'music histories' black people are mostly shown in the context of enslavement and colonialism from a Western perspective. In addition, the qualitative analysis shows that above all the compositions of the pictures are stereotypical. One can conclude that the lack of a critical acknowledgement of unequal power relations can lead to the persistence of racist stereotypes. It is therefore necessary not only to discuss the depicted natioethno-cultural entities, their histories, functions, practices etc. in the context of music education, but also to focus the gaze towards them.

Full textThis work discusses the use and meaning of “praxis” (practice) as a technical term in music education literature. Relevant texts of the German-speaking authors H. J. Kaiser, J. Vogt, Ch. Wallbaum, and Ch. Rolle as well as of the English-speaking authors Th. A. Regelski, D. J. Elliott, and Ch. Small are analyzed and compared in terms of the authors’ understanding of “praxis”. Similarities are identified among (1) the work of Regelski, Kaiser, and Vogt and among (2) the work of Small, Elliott, Wallbaum, and Rolle. While the former group of authors refers to Aristotelian concepts and focuses on the ethical aspect of praxis, the latter group reflects the (positive) experience of “flow” (Elliott), the experience of the aesthetic (Rolle, Wallbaum), or the experience of ideal relationships (Small) – each possible through musical practice (or rather “praxis”)

Full textAre theories, which focus on the generality of situations, able to describe and analyze situations, which are characterized through uniqueness of persons and their relations to each other? The experience of this contradiction – between the general and the specific or unique – is the starting point of the reflections. The author observes – at first independent of any theories – the complexity of three music-classes and observes herself as observing person. Three central perspectives are the result: the different personalities of teachers and styles of teaching, the importance of verbalization and the crucial question about a „good musical lesson“. Subject of the final part is – on the meta-basis of theory – the indissoluble interplay between implicit theories which determine the observation, and explicit theories, which describe the special and individual as something that can be generalized

Full textThe article constitutes an approach on music education, which takes its starting point from a question: Does music appear in music lessons and how, assuming the phenomenon music appears in fulfilling praxis only. Fulfilling praxis is defined as a meaningful constellation of different characteristics, such as the attitude of perception, the topic, the ways of action, interaction and communication of the participating people. The introduction leads from observations in school settings to the keypoints of music didactics, focusing on three different scientific parts of the related issues. Part one portrays “praxis” as the key issue connecting different theories ranging from epistemology to videography. Part two and three depict aesthetical praxis as general form and culture-related meaning as specification of fulfilling musical praxis. Two times four criteria identify aesthetical and cultural aspects of fulfilling musical praxis in the classroom (=SchoolMusic) and are illustrated by the joint music lessons on DVD, which are appended to the book. While the main emphasis of the article is descriptive and does not aim for normative purposes, an excursus drafts a model of music education called “Experiencing and comparing different kinds of musical praxis”

Full textDealing with the musical technical terminology is required in most curricula for the teaching of music in the secondary school level. However, lacking in the curriculum and in the music didactic literature a substantive aspect of this requirement. About the content, scope and purpose of the applicable school musical technical terminology, there is no clarity. Empirical studies on the linguistic content in music lessons are also not available. In many other subjects, the research situation, the linguistic content is rare. With the use of language are connected communication processes and learning processes within the language of the vocabulary extension to the production of content and thematic connections. These learning processes are influenced by the choice of words the students and teachers. The wording of the learners can be at the same time a conclusion as to the state of knowledge and its networking. On this basis, the linguistic content of the music teaching is the subject of this study. The aim of the study was to find out discover what extent it possible to make by way of the use and scope of the technical language in music teaching learning process more effective and more successful and better align to current and future needs of the learner.
