Full textThe introduction and the source study are primarlily based upon 65 manuscripts : an examination of their contents (including identification of vocal compositions transcribed into tablature, noting their intrinsic similarities), a codicological, paleographical analysis of each source, a study of the material available and an investigation of the origin and a dating of each source. A characteristic syntax stemming from each source's provenience arises from the study of notation. In lute music, an examination of these "conditions" encompasses problems such as of temperament (an analysis of fretting proposed by hans gerle,1532) and of mechanism (an analysis of the publisehed instructions by h. Judenkunig, h. Gerle, h. Newsidler and m. Waissel). Ornamentation becomes a structural study outlining the generative grammar of this practise predominantly used by german lutenists. The repertoire is thus determined by idioms such as german song, fantasia, and dance (a systematic presentation of the "basse danse" form and of the pieces based upon a fixed bass is included). Its uniqueness is thereby assured - nevertheless, its dependance upon the italian lute style also becomes apparent. This reflects the general fluctuation between musical styles in 16th century germany. The appendix lists some index tables for music connected to the vocal idioms, a table of tunings unsuitable for the instrument, some biographical information about lutenists active in germany in the 16th century, and finally a modern transcription of published german fantasias (with the exception of those of already established italian origin)

Full textWhile many lute books have been published in France in the mid-sixteenth century, only four were printed in Paris from 1571 to 1623. These few sources reflect major changes in the language of the lutenists, but are isolated from one another and disconnected from the brilliant French lute school that blooms from the 1620s and 1630s. In order to reduce this perceived rupture during the 1571-1623 period and draw a continuous path in the development of French lute repertoire, this study proposes to locate the lutenists’ activities in a broader artistic and socio-historical context. The dissertation is divided into three parts: the place of the instrument in musical printing; its connection with dance as a choreographic art form; and the social context in which the lutenists evolved.

Full textThis thesis focuses on the diffusion of the Afghan rubâb in Central Asia as well as in the occidental Western countries. It is part of an anthropological and historical perspective, which tends account the organological and typological evolution of the instrument in the different countries where it is practiced. The emphasis is placed on the genesis of the parchment sounding board lute, in particular through morphological comparative analyses of various rubâbs bodies from Central Asia. Thanks to the modelings and an innovative and experimental approach we examined the structural and typological relationships between this instrument and other rubâbs or similar lutes. It has thus been found that there is no filiation between these instruments and the Afghan rubâb. A closer look at some of the bowed lutes from these areas highlights striking similarities with the Afghan rubâb. An attempt has been made to answer the question of a possible relationship between one bowed lute and the Afghan rubâb, a hypothesis which is also considered in the light of historical, philological and organological data. The comparative analysis of the various instruments is based on an abundant iconographic source, accompanied by modeling and organological experiments. This research results in a typology of the Afghan rubâbs, in relation with the requirements of the different repertoires where they are used. Finally, the practice of rubâb in the West has been discussed, under the question of the new means used to ensure the transmission of knowledge and know-how with the absence of direct contact with or follow-up with a master

Full textThe Cracow Lute Tablature (CTL) dated c. 1553-early 17th century, is the earliest and most comprehensive collection of Polish Renaissance lute music. The repertoire of CLT, 57 pieces representing a century's worth of music, consists of intabulations of vocal compositions, dances, fantasias and preludes. CLT is the principal source of the unique Polish pieces. The fundamental goal of this dissertation is the study of this rare and unsufficiently examined manuscript. All pieces of CTL have benne analyzed, catalogued and transcribed in the interpretative transcription wich is reconstruction of the raw musical material found in the tablature which renders the real sound of the polyphonic structure, as sounded on the lute in accordance with a modern concept of meter. Almost all genres are identified, the vocal models, the autorship, titles and printed sources of some of the pieces have been established. CTL was compiled during the most productive period in the history of the Renaissance lute music and reflects changes in the European instrumental music between two epochs the Renaissance and Baroque. CTL proves Polish cultural contacts with other musical centers in Europe, enriches our knowledge of compositional techniques, procedures of ornamentation and arrangement, reflects the general tendencies in Polish solo instrumental music of this period and side by side with the famous Jan of Lublin and the Cracow keyboard tablatures, it is one of the most important sources of Polish Renaissance instrumental music. In many details CTL is a varied, problematical source representing a rich and interresting level of Renaissance musical culture. The present study considerably fill the gap in our knowledge on Polish lute music before appearance of the famous Polish lutenists at the beginning of the 17th century and advance the state of searche into this manuscript

Full textThe research proposed in this thesis aims at a better understanding of what was and is, meant by the term "melancholy". I illustrated my approach with a more thorough research of a precise period in a definite place : England under elizabeth and james the first. The second aim is to study the translation of this feeling or emotion, once defined, into a different world : into music. For that is chose the world of the songs accompanied with the lute of the elisabethan period. This work is divided into three parts : the first one proposed to go back in time and place to the origins of the term "melancholy", and to study its progression up to the period of the renaissance in europe and especially in england. One chapter deals with a study of the main causes that brought the feeling for melancholy to europe and england during the renaissance period. Another chapter deals with the study of melancholy in England, as it was apprehended by medicine, authors of english litterature and their characters. A special care is given to the finding of different types of melancholy. The second part recalls the birth of the lute songs in Europe ant its appearance in England. It includes a study of its different writing technics, tablaturas, publications, authors and poems. The third part is dedicated to musical analysis. Eight lute songs, by Johan Dowland, Thomas Campion, Thomas Morley and Philip Rosseter, are presented. They illustrate the different types of melancholy already mentionned. In these analysis, it tried to bring out how the authors translated into music the semantic fields, the metric and the rythmic of the poems as well as the sound echos

Full textMusical connections between east and west trace back to the middle age, particularly to the 8th and 9th centuries, when the musician Abu al-Hasan 'Ali ben Nafi', nicknamed Ziryab, acted as oriental envoy. He was born between 775 and 780, probably of Abyssinian descent. Disciple of the traditional music school founded by Ibrahim and Ishaq al-Mawsili in Baghdad, he was deeply learned and was artistically highly gifted. He had to leave the Abbasside capital, Baghdad, and the court of caliph Harun al-Rachid (786-809) and went to Kairouan. After having sung for Ziyada Allah the aghlabide, he had to leave the Maghreb in 821. Once in Andalusia, he was welcome by emir 'Abd al-Rahman II (822-852) personally. Ziryab happened to be a good judge of passions and needs of Andalusian. He looked at them with an oriental renovating mind, influenced by datas of this new Muslim society; he then conceived diverse creations. He thought up a peculiar lute, to which he added a fifth string and replaced the old plectrum by a new one, carved in an eagle feather. He indicated the development of the nuba and made a few other innovations in the field of fashion and even cooking. Ziryab left in history remarkable traces which influenced Arabic music of this time and which are still to be noticeable nowadays

Full textThe late rediscovery (1983) of "Pseaumes de David. . . A quatre parties » par Cl. Goudimel. Nouvellement mis en tablature sur le Leut par Adrian Le Roy-Paris, Le Roy-Ballard, 1567" has enabled us to study the melodies of calvinist psalms in three aspects. Part I is a modal analysis of these melodies coming after a description of the stages of their composition. Part II deals with Claude Goudimel's activity, suggests a method to analyze harmonizations "nota contra nota" and applies it to those of psalms made by Goudimel. Part III presents printer-lute-player : Adrian Le Roy, psalms "set in tablatures" for the lute and the influence of Goudimel's harmonizations on Le Roy's tablatures. This study tackles problems of musical typography : mutual influences of printers while composing the 1562 monodic psalter ; Le Roy's role in page-setting the lute tablatures and the musical alterations entailed. Those reflections on typography are to be found in the form of appendices gathered in a second volume presenting also a list of musical characters used in Paris in the sixteenth century as well as part of the material in Le Roy and Ballard's workshop. Tables, indexes and documents related to the huguenot psalter, its harmonizations, both in four parts "nota contra notam" and for the lute, complete this volume. The third volume gives the modern transcription of Le Roy's psalms of 1567. The principles of transcription respect the norms of the "corpus des luthistes français"

Full textThis thesis is a reflection on the concert ‘ūd (Arab-easternlute). It is designed as a concept emphasizing a correlation betweenits historical and organological evolution, the compositional thought development of ‘ūdists (lutenists) on the one hand, andthe testing of a representation of that thought through a semiotic model, on the other hand. The historical approach focusedon the construction of the instrument and revealed the primacy of the Iraqi and Turkish ‘ūds as preferred models of theconcert ‘ūd. This preference is linked to the development of contemporary ‘ūdist’s musical thought and their compositionaland interpretative practice. Through ananalytical study of five musical works for this instrument, this practice is regarded as acompositional space of an emerging inter-relationship between three spaces : a listening space, a formal space and a semanticone. The spatial approach to music of the concert ‘ūd, the evolution of its forms and ‘ūd players interpretative variations havecalled for reflection on the performance of this music. The semiotic modeling of an analysed excerpt (2nd movement ofNaseer Shamma’s composition, l’Amiriyya) is placed here as an alternative to traditional transcription by creating a graphic”area” inspired by notation models in contemporary music and provided for the criteria of the ‘ūdist’s compositional space
Wang, Estelle Weiping. "Les partitions pour pipa de Dunhuang : édition et interprétation." Thesis, Paris 4, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA040169.
Full textThe Dunhuang pipa scores (end of Tang dynasty, beginning of Song period), copied on the manuscripts P. 3539, P. 3808 and P. 3719, now kept in the BnF, were discovered by Paul Pelliot in 1908 in the Mogao cave number 17 in China. This thesis describes the musical and cultural influences brought to China by the silk road, including Kuchan music, then reviews the studies of these partitions, conducted over seventy-five years by leading experts including Hayashi Kenzō, Ren Erbei, Rao Zongyi, Ye Dong, He Changlin, Chen Yingshi, Xi Zhenguan, Rembrandt Wolpert and François Picard. It is recognized that they are tablature partitions for a pipa lute with four strings and four frets, as it existed at that time. Ongoing discussions between researchers about the tone, rhythm and tempo, origin, gender and organization of these scores are exposed and criticized. The software designed according to my specifications to facilitate their study and produce their transcription is described. My transcription proposals of the twenty-five pieces of P. 3808 are analysed in detail and compared with each other. The recording of their interpretation with a Nanyin's pipa, current instrument closest to the ancient lutes, is the culmination of that work

Full textThis work aims at studying the several divers properties (Physico-mechanical, biological and chemical) of white Mulberry (Morus alba L.), as the leading material used in fabrication of Iranian lutes. The vibrational characteristic of this species is measured in relation with secondary metabolites (extractives) as well as three artisanal hygro-thermal treatments adapted to laboratory scale.White Mulberry wood is characterized with a moderate specific modulus, less than expected damping and a low anisotropy between three directions. It is specified that this species cannot be described with the same standards as other woods used in European classical instruments. Using independent and successive extractions reveal that two types of extraneous compounds govern the damping in this wood, some raising it, when the rest have a decreasing effect. These compounds are not all extractable by the same solvents.Long time immersion in water at ambient temperature hardly changes mechanical properties of the species, however, it can leave wood with irreversible defects. Hot water treatment at 70°C results for damping and moduli to be increased and decreased respectively. These changes are time related. Several mild desorption and adsorption cycles, seem to reduce damping without greatly endangering the moduli. White Mulberry wood is found to be very durable towards fungi, even in extreme conditions. Water leaching seems to be affectless on this species resistance towards basidiomycetes. This wood is rated moderately durable towards termites and becomes sensible after water leaching. Extractives seem to play important role in this wood natural resistance, as they are found to have toxic effect on termites. Resorcinol, a phenol, is the leading compound in the extractives of white Mulberry. Fatty acids, sterols, higher hydrocarbons, and aromatic compounds are also found as the constituents of secondary metabolites. Resorcinol is documented to cause irritations close to what is normally experienced by the fabricants working with white Mulberry for a long time

Full textThis thesis focuses on the musical career of Joseph Kohaut (1734–1777), one of the last known lute players in Europe of the Enlightenment. Belonging to the second generation of the musicians originated from the Czech lands, this lutenist, born in Vienna and dead in Paris, represents an interesting case of the migration of musicians in the 18th century Europe. After having examinated the origines of the musician and his close family (his father Jacob Joseph Kohaut and his older brother Karl Kohaut), the study analyses his own musical career. The aristocratic patronage becomes apparent as an important reason for his musical production, including his comic operas that made him famous also outside France. Finally, this study addresses the compositions of both brothers Kohaut, taking interest in problematic attributions, and offers a thematic catalogue of all works registering their all known sources

Full textWhat does it mean to play Renaissance music in the 21st century? Taking into account that the depth of an experience derives from its singularity, the present dissertation looks at this general question by focusing on a specific process: a specialized ensemble rehearsing and recording a 16th century song. A close reading of this process makes it clear that there is inherent value in observing musicians in the year 2014 engaged in repeat performances of “Suzanne un jour” by Didier Lupi. This observation clarifies how a musical performance is created and developed and reveals the modalities of the collective and individual experiences involved. Moreover, this detail-oriented and singularist epistemology is useful in other respects, whether to comprehend a five-week recording project or to write a five-century history of “Suzanne.”

Full textLeatherback turtles, Dermochelys coriacea, have relatively low hatching success in comparison to other marine turtle’s species. This low hatching rate is largely a result of high embryonic mortality rather than infertility, but the specific cause remains unknown. Long lived species such as leatherbacks are more vulnerable to excessive adult mortality that results in dramatic population decline. However, low hatching success could result in long term declines caused by a recruitment of juveniles too low. Leatherbacks populations have already suffered from dramatic decline. On the Yalimapo beach, in French Guiana, hatching success is lower than on other nesting sites for this species, stressing the problem of recruitment of the population. Therefore, understanding causes of low hatching success would be an important conservation step towards preventing extinction in this species. During my thesis, I investigated the role of ecological (predation and nest site location) and ecotoxicological factors (blood and egg contamination in trace elements and organochlorine compounds) on the hatching success of nests. First, nest location has been shown to have an important effect on predation and inundation rate that decreased hatching success. Second, a maternal transfer of contaminants from females to their eggs was assessed, raising the question of deleterious effects of environmental contaminants on embryos development, a very sensitive stage to contaminants. Dose-effects relationships between contaminants and hatching success need to be assessed to establish risk of environmental pollution for leatherbacks. The use of stable isotope analysis in females differing in the number of years between two reproductive seasons made possible to highlight different feeding areas used by those females. These feeding grounds differed in their geographical location, but also in the quality of the preys available in terms of level of contamination by environmental pollutants raising the question of adult contamination. This thesis confirmed the importance of ecological factors for hatching rate and highlighted the existence of ecotoxicological factors, which have not been studied yet for the leatherback turtle

Full textThe strong heterogeneity of the marine ecosystem leads to a patchy distribution of the resources in time and space, shaping therefore the movements of sea turtles. Considered as the most dynamic ecosystem in the world, the Guiana shield is a highly dynamic system which hosts three of the seven sea turtle species in the world (the olive ridley, the green turtle and the leatherback turtle). The aim of this thesis was to understand how the oceanographic constraints can influence the at-sea movements of these three species during the reproduction and the migration phases. The deployment of 55 satellite tags on adult females in French Guiana provided information on their trajectories, their diving behavior and on the environment encountered. Our study shows a strong behavioral plasticity between species, which seems to be mainly dictated by the reproductive traits and strategies, the local conditions of the habitat and the physiological adaptations

Full textSea turtles are increasingly threatened by the direct and indirect effects of human activities. Their life cycle is complex, shared between various, and often very distant, habitats. Their conservation therefore requires identifying the habitats occupied at each stage of life and the migration routes between these different habitats. While the spatial ecology of adult turtles is relatively well known, particularly through satellite monitoring, the situation is not the same for juveniles which pelagic development phase remains largely unobserved. In that context, numerical simulation constitutes an appropriate tool to explore the dispersal of juvenile sea turtles from their natal beaches. Until now, simulations were mostly performed under the assumption that juveniles disperse passively with oceanic currents. In this PhD thesis we present STAMM (Sea Turtle Active Movement Model), a new model of active dispersal that aims to go beyond the initial hypothesis of passive drift. In STAMM, juvenile sea turtles move under the influence of ocean currents and swimming movements motivated by the search for favorable habitats. This model is applied here to the study of the dispersal of juveniles from three sea turtle populations: leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) of the Western Pacific and the Northwest Atlantic Oceans, and loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) of the Western Indian Ocean. Our results show that, although ocean currents broadly shape juvenile dispersal areas, simulations including habitat-driven movements provide more realistic results than passive drift simulations. Habitat-driven movements prove to deeply structure the spatial and temporal distribution of juveniles. In particular, they induce seasonal latitudinal migrations that reduce cold induce mortality. They also push simulated individuals to concentrate in productive areas that cannot be accessed through pure passive drift. These results challenge the classical view of juveniles circulating passively around oceanic gyres. They should rapidly be taken into account for the implementation of targeted conservation measures concerning juvenile sea turtles
