This thesis is about women rock musicians in the U.K. It is based on in-depth interviews with 36 female rock musicians in the 1980s. Firstly, it examines the relative absence of women in rock music-making and explains this in terms of gender socialisation and a number of social constraints operating on women. Secondly, it looks at those women who, despite all the obstacles, do become rock musicians. This paper investigates the Western image of the Muslim woman in the context of contemporary art. Through my art practice I use the veiled woman cipher to reflect on personal experiences whilst broadening definitions and displacing hegemonic representations of veiling and Muslim women in an Australian cultural context. These are exemplified through autobiographical elements, parody in the Extremist Activity series, performative interventions illustrating the concept of the body as an occupied site and architectural devices that (re)create notions of inclusion, exclusion and otherness in space.

In this thesis, women who identify as both queer and Muslims living in North America tell their stories of family, religion, and home. These immigrants and first generation Westerners describe their identities in an effort to acknowledge the difficulties that can accompany being both Muslim in the diaspora in a time when religious and political tensions are aimed at the Middle East. This Thesis study is concerned with the perception of the medieval Muslim garden within its wider view as an image of Paradise. The study examines the built evidence of gardens in the 17<SUP>th</SUP> century setting of Muslim Deccan, sharpening a perception of the Deccani Muslim garden through study of contemporary poetry supplemented with, more general, survey of traditional medicine and horticulture.
