Abstract:
Motion sign-based language has an important role in the mute community, that is for data transmission. Usually, silent and dumb people counter very difficult situations to convey information to normal people. This paper proposes research that can ease the life of the deaf community. The work presented in this paper is a communication bridge between normal-hearing persons and persons with less hearing ability or impaired persons. The proposed research ‘Gesture–Talk’ can be used as an interpreter between any normal person and deaf and mute persons. The Gesture–Talk is based on the language used in Pakistan which is Pakistan Sign Language (PSL), which is a standard language used by deaf persons in Pakistan. Using Gesture–Talk, PSL can be translated into voice. The idea is to develop a small portable application that can be used as a middle layer application between normal and deaf people. The authors have used an electrical sensor that will collect the data by detecting electrical pulses that will be sent to the microcomputer (raspberry pi 3) where the data will be processed and sent to the speaker from which voice will be generated. A cost-effective and novel approach has been proposed in this research paper compared to the other existing approaches. Moreover, Artificial Intelligence (AI) based predictive or classification algorithms may be applied for the best optimal results.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: to describe and analyze the centrality, the mute zone and the attitudes expressed in nurses' social representations of people with Human Immunodeficiency Virus. METHOD: the subjects were 30 nurses from a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro. The data was collected using a Likert scale. RESULTS: the data pointed to a process of representational change regarding Human Immunodeficiency Virus / Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, with the assumption of a more positive attitude regarding living with this health issue. The hypothesis of the existence of a mute zone in the representation, comprising elements with a contranormative character, was strengthened. CONCLUSION: the influence of the dynamics of social normativity on how the social representations studied are expressed may contribute to a better understanding of its structuring process. It also helps in the analysis of possible gaps among the nurses' discourses and practices in relation to Human Immunodeficiency Virus / Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

Abstract:
Impairment is something that most people do not want. There is impairment due to congenital from birth and there is also impairment caused by accidents. For example is deaf and mute. People with hearing impairment have limited hearing, whereas mute sufferers have limitations in terms of oral /voice and many also experience less hearing. Deaf people and mute need skills to maintain their survival, in SLB PSM Takeran there are lessons that teach about skills, but the skills of students in SLB PSM Takeran not well distributed, the creative craft made by SLB students are still stored neatly in school. Therefore, need to given the training bisol (Bisnis Online) for the deaf and mute in SLB PSM Takeran. The training was followed by 12 deaf and mute students at SLB Takeran. The training was held for two days with demo material on how to create social media account starting from e-mail creation, facebook, twitter, instagram, bukalapak, blibli.com and so on, then how to upload photos of products to be marketed, how to send goods Through shipping services. The results of the training were analyzed by qualitative approach. The results of the qualitative analysis (based on observation and interview) show that all participants feel the new knowledge and skills, namely the skills of doing business online. In addition, it can provide entrepreneurial supplies for people with deaf and mute. The future plan after this training will be the establishment of a disability community in Kecamatan Takeran, where the community will develop their skills and be able to create jobs for people with disabilities. So as to create financial independence for persons with disabilities.

Abstract:
Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess any existing correlations between the phonatory function obviously affected in deaf-mute patients and dento-maxillary and/or facial anomalies. Material and Methods: The study comprised 55 deaf-mute patients (28 males and 27 females) aged between 23 and 76 from 2 cities of Romania, belonging to the Hearing Deficiency Persons’ Association. 13 were edentulous. Each patient was clinically and radiographically assessed. We applied computer assisted interpretetation of the profile teleradiographies using AudaxCeph and Scanora Lite 3.2.6 software for the following parameters: SNA, SNB, ANB, SN/ML, FH/ML, NL/ML, NL/+1 and ML/-1 angles, Ls-ELine, Li-ELine, UP and LP distances. The data was compared to normal values as referred to in the mentioned computer programs by using Student’s t-tests and the Bland Altman plot. Results: The following characteristics were identified as being statistically different from the normal values: SN/ML with a mean of -5,5°, FH/ML by 6,2°, NL/ML with -5,2°, Ls-ELine by -4,2 mm and Li-ELine with a mean of -3,7 mm. Conclusions: Deaf-mute patients tend to present hypodivergent vertical skeletal patterns, anterior mandibular growth/rotation and skeletal deep bite and also protruded lips, aspects which must be taken into consideration when commencing an orthodontic treatment.

Abstract:
Truthteller liar puzzles are popular in science and also in recreational mathematics. In this paper, we compare five different types of puzzles. In each of our puzzles, the persons of the puzzle may state some statements about their types. In strong truthteller–strong liar puzzles (SS puzzles), each statement of a truthteller must be true and each statement of a liar must be false, and there is no third type of person in these puzzles. It is known that there is no good SS puzzle, where a puzzle is good if it has exactly one solution. In fact, because of symmetry, by flipping the type of person in a solution, another (dual) solution is obtained. Therefore, to break this symmetry, there are various ways to introduce a third type of person, e.g., Mutes and crazies. In SSS puzzles, crazy people may appear, each of whom can tell only a self-contradicting statement. In SSW puzzles, a crazy person may say some additional statements apart from his or her self-contradicting statement. In SSM puzzles, that we investigate here, there can also be some Mute people (as the third type together with truthtellers and liars). We differentiate two types of SSM puzzles. In SSMW puzzles a mute person may be a Mute (type), but he or she could also be either a truthteller or a liar (type). In SSMS puzzles, each person who did not say any statement must be a Mute in the solution. Various examples are presented and it is also highlighted how a puzzle changes from unsolvable to solvable or to a good puzzle when the interpretation, the type of the puzzle changes, i.e., shifted from one to other, and symmetry breaks. Among other data, the number of solvable and good puzzles are counted and compared for the five types when few people appear.

Abstract:
As a consequence of birth anomalies and accidents, the number of hearing impaired and speech challenged sufferers has increased dramatically in recent years. When a deaf-dumb person speaks to a normal person, the normal person struggles to understand and demands that the deaf-dumb person display gestures to meet his or her needs. Dumb individuals speak to us in their own language. The only need is that we need to understand their language. Sign language is a communication capacity used by deaf and dumb people that uses hand signs, orientations, and movement of the hands, arms, or body, as well as facial expressions, to transmit the thoughts of a speaker fluently. However, most people struggle to understand this sign language. People who are unable to speak or have lost their ability to speak as a result of an injury find it difficult to transmit their message in society. We created an electronic speaking glove for this project. Dumb individuals may easily converse with normal people by merely wearing the glove. The system’s circuitry translates some activities, such as receiving a speech for each chosen button, making it easier for deaf/dumb people to converse with normal people. In this system, an LCD display is also employed; normal people’s voice is detected word by word and shown as text on the LCD display, making it easier for normal people to converse with deaf/mute people. As a result, this initiative will assist to bridge the communication gap between mute, deaf, and hearing persons.

The aim of this paper is to call into question the logic of interpretation of the texts of Ortega y Gasset about Vel?zquez made by Trivo Indjic. The sociologist from Belgrade in his text ?Ortega i Velaskes? [?Ortega and Vel?zquez?] overlooked an important question which the philosopher from Madrid proposed with regard to his interpretation of Vel?zquez - what is actually the condition of possibility to comprehend the work of (this) painter? Painting is a mute form of expression. Ortega y Gasset asks - how to speak about the persons who do not speak? Because Trivo Indjic did not stress the importance of this question and did not discover this transcendental motif, his text will be problematized in that direction.

Abstract:
Introduction: An emergency is a serious, unexpected situation which may lead to injury, loss of life and damage to property and often needs urgent interventions. Emergency calls can bring urgent life-saving intervention in such situations. Although access to emergency lines for all persons of a society is one of the effectiveness indexes of this critical service, in most countries, these lines are not accessible for disabled people.Case presentation: This study examined the issue of emergency number accessibility for disabled people in the I.R. of Iran. Two persons who had been poisoned by carbon monoxide died because their deaf-mute father could not communicate with the Emergency Medical Service Center (EMSC). This led to the Emergency Medical Service Management Center (EMSMC), in collaboration with Iranian Society of Deaf People Family (ISDPF), developing a system that is a combination of short message system (SMS) and location-based information (LBI) to facilitate the communication of such disabled persons with EMSMCs. The system did not receive any emergency message until this report is provided. Conclusion: Because emergency call service has not been available for disabled people in Iran until now, emergency service organizations should take a proactive approach in developing a reliable and easy to use a method with the current technologies. These organizations should also provide information about the installed systems for end-users.

Abstract:
The article has identified the main organizational, tactical and legal issues of using members of the public during the presentation for recognition by voice or speech, including phonogram. The authors have concluded that the most effective in terms of organizational implementation of this investigative (search) action, in terms of involvement of mutes, experts, witnesses, there is always lack of cooperation with NGOs, volunteers, representatives of labor collectives and cultural community. They have developed and proposed algorithms for using members of the public as: 1) persons who are presented together with the suspect as «mutes» for identification by «live» voice; 2) persons who perform the role of a source for the creation of audio samples of the voice (when recognizing by phonogram); 3)professionals to create audio samples of the voice (when recognizing by phonogram); 4) professionals to establish possible changes in the voice of the person to be identified; 5) witnesses involved in order to certify the correctness and objectivity of the recording of the content, course and results of the presentation for recognition by voice or speech. For this purpose typical investigative situations that arise in the case of the use of members of the public during the presentation for identification by voice and speech have been identified, in particular: 1. In the use of members of the public as persons who are presented together with the suspect as «extras» for identification by a «live» voice, typical investigative situations include: 1) discrepancy between the characteristics of the voice (volume, intelligibility of speech, timbre, gender of the person, etc.) of colleagues or persons who are in «close access» and the characteristics of the person’s voice presented for identification; 2) refusal of colleagues or persons who are in «close access» to participate in this investigative (search) action as a mute, etc.; 3) the investigator’s inability to determine the characteristics of mutes’ voices at the stage of preparation for the investigative (search) action. 2. When using members of the public as persons who act as a source for the creation of audio samples of the voice (when recognizing by phonogram), the authors have identified the following typical investigative situations: 1) the sound of the created phonogram (signal) does not correspond to «living» voices, or is perceived differently; 2) the number of pronounced words and phrases or their sequence is insufficient for recognition by the recognizing person, etc. 3. When using members of the public as specialists to create audio samples of the voice (when recognizing by phonogram), the following tactical situations may arise: 1) lack of opportunity to involve an expert; 2) conducting an investigative (search) action in remote settlements.

Abstract:
Even though using the most natural way of communication is sign language, deaf and mute people find it challenging to socialize. A language barrier is erected between regular people and D&M individuals due to the structure of sign language, which is distinct from text. They converse by using vision-based communication as a result. The gestures can be easily understood by others if there is a standard interface that transforms sign language to visible text. As a result, R&D has been done on a vision-based interface system that will allow D&M persons to communicate without understanding one another's languages. In this project, first gathered and acquired data and created a dataset, after which extracting useful data from the images. Keywords After verification and trained data and model using the (LSTM) algorithm, TensorFlow, and Keras technology, classified the gestures according to alphabet. Using our own dataset, this system achieved an accuracy of around 86.75% in an experimental test. system uses the (LSTM) algorithm to process images and data.

Abstract:
Among the fastest-growing areas of study today is the translation of sign language, which is the most natural form of communication for those with hearing loss. Deaf individuals may be able to communicate with hearing people directly, without an intermediary, with the use of a hand gesture recognition device. The method was developed to facilitate the automatic translation of American Sign Language into text and sound. The suggested system uses a large data collection to interpret individual words and phrases in traditional American Sign Language, alleviating any fears that the user may have about using a virtual camera. Deaf and mute persons must rely on Sign Language as their only method of communication. However, a large portion of the general public is illiterate in sign language. Therefore, those who sign have a more difficult time communicating with those who don't without the help of an interpreter. The proposed technique employs data collected by Fifth Dimension Technologies (5DT) gloves to try to interpret hand movements as spoken language. The data has been classified into text words using a variety of machine learning techniques, including neural networks, decision tree classifiers, and k-nearest neighbors.

Abstract:
Sign language is a non-verbal language that Deaf persons exclusively count on to connect with their social environment. The problem that occurs in two-way communication using sign language is a misunderstanding when learning new terms that need to be taught to deaf and mute people. To minimize these misunderstandings, a system is needed that can assist in correcting hand gestures so that there is no misinterpretation in teaching new terms. Several optimality properties of PCA have been identified namely: variance of extracted features is maximized; the extracted features are uncorrelated; finds best linear approximation in the mean-square sense and maximizes information contained in the extracted feature. The classification uses the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) method. From the results of experiments with different image size variables, the largest accuracy was obtained with an image size of 449x449 of 76.20%. While the lowest accuracy of 52.38% is obtained through scenarios with image sizes of 57x57 and 45x45. Therefore, differences in the use of image sizes have an influence on the accuracy of hand signal prediction. The smaller the size given, the smaller the accuracy obtained. This is indicated by the decreasing accuracy value when given a smaller size in the four scenarios that have been studied.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the problem of communication between subjects, one of which is deaf-blind person, and «the Other» (others) is (are) sighted-hearing person(s). The aim is to identify discursive practices and semiotic mechanisms behind them that provide the possibility of communication and determine the possibility of being understood by «the Other»» on the example of the work of O. Skorokhodova. It is shown that the subject faces the following issue: a) to contemplate something and to translate it into a categories and forms understandable to the subject himself and matching with the categories of «the Other»»; b) discursively formalize your experience; c) make it representable to «the Other». It has been proven that the only acceptable form of communication is an appeal to the language of «the Other». It is proved that poetry becomes an epistemological practice - the experience of perceiving something that is inaccessible to the senses of a deaf-blind subject (if the object itself cannot be perceived directly, the experience of its perception is constructed). The construction of the experience of perception occurs not through interaction with the object itself, but through interaction with the description of the subject. It is proved that communication includes the delegation of the zone of perception to «the Other». A substance of relationship between a sign and a "reality" replaced by the sign was revealed; the following types of signs are distinguished: signs that distort "a reality"; signs that "confuse a reality"; signs that do not refer to a reality and / or block a reality; signs that are in complex “accidental-associative” relations with a reality. A new model of semiosis for communication of subjects, one of which is deaf-blind-mute, and «the Other» (others) is (are) sighted-hearing(s), is proposed. As a result of the work, the stages of search ways of authentic communication are revealed.

Abstract:
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which destruction of the insulin-producing β-cells in the pancreatic islets requires regular lifelong insulin replacement therapy, the only lifesaving treatment available at this time. In young persons with a genetic predisposition, it usually manifests after being exposed to environmental triggers. A subtype of autoimmune diabetes mellitus (ADM) that typically occurs in adulthood is often referred to as latent autoimmune diabetes of adults (LADA). LADA is characterized by a milder process of β-cells destruction and less intensive insulin treatment, which may become necessary even many years after diagnosis. Genetic predisposition of T1D carries an increased risk for other autoimmune diseases, such as autoimmune thyroiditis, the most frequently associated condition, and pernicious anaemia (PA), present in approximately 4% of all individuals with T1D. Here, we describe the case of a 90-year-old woman with vitiligo and a mute medical history who was admitted to our University Hospital in Perugia with hyperglycaemia and severe anaemia due to vitamin B12 (VB12) depletion. A short time after setting the beginning treatment with a basal-bolus insulin regimen, her insulin requirement rapidly declined and treatment with sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor (DPP4), was started. A complete autoimmunity screening panel showed that GAD65 and intrinsic factor autoantibodies were positive.

In 1963, a children’s home for the deaf-mute was founded in Zagorsk, near Moscow. Alexander Meshcheryakov, the head of the laboratory at the Institute of Defectology of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, became its supervisor. Four years later, Evald Ilyenkov joined the experiment. The archival text “On the work of Meshcheryakov”, published now for the first time, was presented at the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Pedagogical Sciences in February 1973. In this paper, Ilyenkov briefly formulates his conception of psychical image as condensing of a temporal process of activity into a spatial form of object, and suggests a number of deep thoughts on connection of the psyche and language, sign and meaning, word and action, taking his stand on the data of the Zagorsk experiment. The process of image formation is demonstrated by the case “Julia and the ravine”. After a walk along the ravine, a deaf-blind girl was able to mould the contour of the ravine from plasticine. Without seeing the ravine, she reproduced the trajectory of her body’s motion as some spatial object. The formation of language in deaf-blind persons begins with gesture speech, which is gradually transformed into verbal speech — first in its dactyl, then written and, finally, sound form. The experimental study of this transformation helps to solve the question of how speech and language are connected to objective reality.

The question is: Are there any hidden gender stereotypes contained in images, words, and plot in a movie? Therefore, this report refers to the image and portrait of Vietnamese women described in the Vietnam War films under a comparative perspective from both the US and Vietnam. From these different views, the filmmakers in Hollywood and Vietnam presented their different perceptions, even their opposing views to the Vietnamese women and their role in the war. Even more interesting, it is characterized by two opposing sides and due to always having the appearance of the familiar conventions of war films, in which one is the hero, one is the villain. Thus, the common portrayal in American films is nameless and faceless persons, such as street vendors, teachers, tailors, peasants, prostitutes and so on. These “mute characters” appear at a glance, the audiences recognize them by the traditional costumes and conical hats. In Vietnamese movies, the women seem to be multiple tasks: wives, mothers and soldiers at the same time. By comparison, the report would indicate the gender stereotypes and its negative impact on the formation, maintenance and strengthening the traditional notions of gender, particularly for Vietnamese women. The relationship between gender, gender equality and the media is also examined in the study.

Abstract:
The article presents two plans for the analysis of the famous production of Rimas Tuminas "Eugene Onegin". The first discusses the problems and difficulties of translating Pushkin's poetic work into the language of the theater. At the same time, the author uses the analysis of this production carried out by Alexander Minkin in the book "Mute Onegin". In particular, a number of techniques are considered (splitting the heroes, Onegin and Lensky, into two persons, giving historical events a modern form of existence, which implies rethinking them); they, according to Minkin, were used in his production by Tuminas. The author provides a voice to Alexander Sergeevich, who does not recognize his work in the production of Tuminas, assuming that he solved problems far from those that interested Pushkin. In the second part, a reconstruction of the logic is proposed, in accordance with which Tuminas most likely acted, creating his own statement. The author shows that, firstly, Tuminas is not trying to present Pushkin's brilliant work in a new, modern way, but creates a new work, his own; secondly, the artistic reality of this new work is made up of very different events, including reflexive ones. He raises the question of how these heterogeneous events create a whole. If in the traditional aesthetics the artist depicts the world and life existing outside of a person (or inside him), which are considered as universally significant for everyone, then in the new one the world and events of consciousness of the personality of the artist and the viewer are described and constituted.

Abstract:
Objective Our aim was to determine the number and size parameters of EDB motor units in healthy young adults using MScanFit, a novel approach to motor unit number estimation (MUNE). Since variability in MUNE is related to compound muscle action potential (CMAP) size, we employed a procedure to document the optimal EDB electromyographic (EMG) electrode position prior to recording MUNE, a neglected practice in MUNE. Methods Subjects were 21 adults 21–44 y. Maximum CMAPs were recorded from 9 sites in a 4 cm2 region centered over the EDB and the site with the largest amplitude was used in the MUNE experiment. For MUNE, the peroneal nerve was stimulated at the fibular head to produce a detailed EDB stimulus-response curve or “MScan”. Motor unit number and size parameters underlying the MScan were simulated using the MScanFit mathematical model. Results In 19 persons, the optimal recording site was superior, superior and proximal, or superior and distal to the EDB mid-belly, whereas in 3 persons it was proximal to the mid-belly. Ranges of key MScanFit parameters were as follows: maximum CMAP amplitude (3.1–8.5 mV), mean SMUP amplitude (34.4–106.7 μV), mean normalized SMUP amplitude (%CMAP max, 0.95–2.3%), largest SMUP amplitude (82.7–348 μV), and MUNE (43–103). MUNE was not related to maximum CMAP amplitude (R2 = 0.09), but was related to mean SMUP amplitude (R2 = -0.19, P = 0.05). Conclusion The EDB CMAP was highly sensitive to electrode position, and the optimal position differed between subjects. Individual differences in EDB MUNE were not related to CMAP amplitude. Inter-subject variability of EDB MUNE (coefficient of variation) was much less than previously reported, possibly explained by better optimization of the EMG electrode and the unique approach of MScanFit MUNE.

Communication is the act of sharing information to produce greater understanding. It is both, an art and science. Like us humans, animals also have its own way of conveying information. We have evolved from one language and have been able to converse in various languages. IoT based Smart Gloves is an innovative system which will help the dumb interact with the normal people. This system uses a set of sensors that are attached to each finger on both hands. Each motion made and the bending of the fingers has its own separate meaning. The gloves read the motions and the orientation of the sensors. The basic task of this work is to develop a portable, reliable and an inexpensive prototype system.

Abstract:
Flex sensors are used by the IOT-based smart healthcare monitoring system for paralyzed and silent people to identify their requirements. The system includes temperature and pulse rate monitoring, and it transmits and displays real-time data updates via Internet of Things to an LCD. The brain of the system is an Arduino or CPU, which gathers and processes input from several sensors and coordinates all of the system's functions. It displays vital sign data, interpreted requirements, and any alarms or messages that the patient or caregivers may observe in real time. Because of its Internet of Things (IOT) characteristics, this system can send gathered data to distant servers or devices over the internet. This makes it possible for caregivers or healthcare professionals to view the patient's data remotely for tracking and prompt action. In the event that any sensor readings exceed predetermined thresholds indicating critical circumstances, an alarm system is included to rapidly contact caretakers or medical personnel. The buzzer functions as an auditory alert that requires quick attention. Caregivers are alerted by a buzzer when high sensor readings are detected. The method uses audio playback to convey requirements that have been discovered in order to improve communication with patients who are silent. By delivering timely information and promoting efficient communication, this integrated approach improves treatment for people with paralysis and those who are silent. It also makes the healthcare environment more responsive and patient-centered.

Abstract:
It is unacceptable to disregard fiction reading and writing as the caprices of a reality-deluded individual. Instead, it is an effective instrument for illuminating unsaid real-life incidents that are frequently disregarded despite existing as (non-fictitious) facts in the world. Fiction gives these mute voices a platform for discourse that would otherwise have stayed as monologues in the dark. Illness narratives are one such effort to advocate on behalf of the voiceless. One such author who sheds light on the psychological struggles faced by young adults with chronic illnesses is John Green. His book The Fault in Our Stars gives a realistic picture of the struggles that children with chronic illnesses confront on a daily basis. Frequently, people pay little attention to how someone, particularly a young adult with a chronic disease, interprets everything that goes on around them and how that interpretation eventually affects their attitude and sense of insight about life. The article seeks to highlight the psychological aspect of how a person’s lifestyle is directly impacted by the influence of particular individuals and shifts in perception.

Abstract:
In January 1977, Potassa de Lafayette visited Andy Warhol’s studio wearing a black velvet and taffeta evening gown. The Dominican model sat for sketches by visiting artist Jamie Wyeth and photographs taken by Warhol that together reveal the sequence in which Potassa raised her skirt and lowered her stockings to expose her penis. This contribution explores Potassa’s strategies of self-presentation amid the politics at play in the studio that day. The author reads Potassa as a self-possessed figure fully in control of her image because hers is an identity not predicated on a gendered or sexed body, but on a visual sensibility – as one who ‘loves beautiful things’. As an aesthete and as one of the first openly transgender models of color, Potassa, the author argues, negotiated difference through beauty and glamor in Warhol’s studio and across New York’s high art and fashion scenes.

AbstractThe author supplements studies published in the 1969 and 1975 volumes of Oud Holland concerning the Nassau tapestries which Count Henry III of Nassau ordered to be made in 1531 after designs by Barend van Orley. Five of Van Orley's drawings for this series of tapestries with equestrian portraits have been preserved. The inscription in the cartouche on one of these drawings is not consistent with the depicted persons. The author contends that they are Henry III himself and his third wife, the Spanish Mencia de Mendoza, with his first two wives in the background Arguments supporting this hypothesis are based on the resemblance to other portraits of the couple, the insignia of the order of the Golden Fleece on the cuirass and on the count's coat of arms, the countess's garments and the mule on which she alone is scated. The mule should be seen as the mount most commonly ridden by ladies in Spain. Frederick Henry had copies of the original series made in 1632. They hung in the Noordeinde palace first, and later in Breda castle. The name of the maker of these copies was hitherto unknown. However, a pamphlet containing a description of a wedding feast held in February 1638 in the Noordeinde palace states the artist's name: Jan Raes, a Brussels tapestry weaver.

Abstract:
The Wide Sargasso Sea - (1966). After years of contemplating Charlotte Bronte's Creole madwoman Bertha Mason, Jean Rhys set out to give voice to what is mute in Bronte’s Jane Eyre. Rhys lets Antoinette narrate her tale, revealing the "other side" of Bronte's story: what occurred in the years before and after Mr. Rochester's first marriage in Jamaica. As a twentieth-century West Indian writer, Rhys was able to expose implicit assumptions and ideals in Bronte's writing, such as imperialist England's attitude toward her colonies. The natural environment is a mirror of interior states of being and emotion, a remark on the novel's characterization and action. Even though the two books seem to be identical, they are not. Rhys flips Bronte's Victorian Romantic symbols, Wide Sargasso Sea appears more contemporary and realistic. This paper aims to highlight the victimized characters in both novels and gives a real comparison of the most victimized ones. Both works, respectively, show women fighting patriarchy and injustice at any historical time. From a feminist standpoint, this study compares, Bertha Mason, in the two narratives. Even though Wide Sargasso Sea is a forerunner to Jane Eyre, Rhys expressed a more progressive and revolutionary feminist viewpoint. Bertha Mason is a more victimized female than Jane of the patriarchal system and colonization. These feminist works have left an indelible effect on literature. Most literary commentators have concentrated on Jane, the protagonist of Charlotte Bronte's narrative, on the other hand, there is Bertha Mason, the insane lady on the upper floor imprisoned, as just Jane's evil twin. Bertha has received much less attention than Jane, not as an evil side of Jane, but as a stand-alone figure. This study compares Bertha Mason's representation in Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea. Bertha, who acts as an impediment to Jane's pleasure in Jane Eyre, is recognized as a victim of society.

Abstract:
Abstract Emily Dickinson Wellcome has been called the “essential muse” of her grandson, William Carlos Williams. Paul Mariani, when bestowing this sobriquet, further states that Williams identified her “with nothing less than the deepest promptings of his unconscious self” (8). To look more deeply into Williams’s unconscious self and detect Emily’s presence, this essay relies on a close reading of three poems—“Dedication for a Plot of Ground,” “The Last Words of My English Grandmother,” and “An Exultation”—against the psychic structures proposed by Jungian analytical psychology. Emily’s adherence to Christian Science alluded to in the poems and referenced in Williams biographies will be demonstrated as a crucial component of the contra-sexual unconscious complex Carl Gustav Jung terms the anima, contrasted against the consciously constructed persona of the medically oriented ‘Doctor Williams.’

Abstract:
This article is based on the international research project ‘Identity on the Line’, conducted by the Faculty of Communication of Vilnius University together with partners from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Slovenia and Croatia memory institutions, from 2019 to 2023. The research undertaken by the Faculty of Communication deals with the traumatic experiences, wounded past and muted memories of women who survived the Holocaust and how these influenced the lives of their children and grandchildren, even when being kept silent. The article represents only part of the project and analysis of the traumatic experiences of the Jewish women who were fighting in the anti-Nazi partisan resistance by joining the combat units in the forests, as well as consequences and intergenerational transmission of a traumatic past. The purpose of this article is to show the muted stories of traumatic experiences, and how psychological scars of the war and the Holocaust are reflected in the daily life of women and their family members. What happens when the surrounding environment becomes dangerous and life-threatening? How does that challenge a person’s identity and narratives? How do these traumatic experiences affect the lives of the second and third generations in the family? This article tries to answer these complicated questions by interviewing Jewish women partisans, referring to their diaries, memoirs and testimonies as well as by interviewing the daughters of the survivors.

Abstract:
P89 BACKGROUND:Cluster-randomized community trials are critically important to cardiovascular (CVD) epidemiology. While studies evaluating the effect of community education programs report favorable risk factor changes, including the Pawtucket Heart Health Program (PHHP), changes in hard CVD endpoints have been less common. Few have examined the effect of neighborhood on endpoints, especially controlling for individual characteristics. In short, overall effects may be confounded with neighborhood. METHODS:In the first study of this type, we geocoded PHHP neighborhoods to 1990 Census tracts, and randomly sampled 50% (n=521) of the observations from the 6th PHHP cross-sectional survey. Endpoints included CVD knowledge (number of correct risk factors mentioned), and total serum cholesterol. Income and percent working poor (households in a tract with income < 150% of the poverty-line) served as individual- and neighborhood-level SES, respectively. SAS Proc Mixed was used to fit multilevel models. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) methods map empirical Bayes estimates. RESULTS:Choropleth maps show variation in CVD knowledge and cholesterol across the 22 tracts of Pawtucket. Multilevel models reveal that income accounts for most of this neighborhood-level variation. However, a significant negative interaction between individual- and neighborhood-level SES (p < 0.10) was observed for CVD knowledge. Predicted values for CVD knowledge show that persons with a moderate income (level 5) living in a neighborhood with a large proportion (65%) of working poor would be expected to have a knowledge score of 2.34. This same person living in a neighborhood with a small proportion of working poor (15%) would be expected to have a knowledge score of 3.19. This represents a 14% difference due to the neighborhood effect. COMMENT: These results suggest that having more individual-level income is positively related to CVD knowledge; such effects are muted if one resides in a neighborhood with a larger proportion of working poor. It may be that future community trials for CVD may benefit by targeting, or concentrating more heavily on, not only poor persons but persons living in poor neighborhoods.

Abstract:
Interventions considering the arts are increasingly gaining acceptance in the clinical-methodological repertoire, and in supporting people with diseases. However, current approaches are often limited considering the variety of offered creative activities and are neglecting the influence of the artistic context. Furthermore, there is often a focus on momentary well-being primarily and not on the impact on quality of life, missing centralization around the transferability of creative engagement and art-based interventions into daily life issues. The goal of our study is the implementation of a person-centered, art-based program. We offer people with Parkinson’s a program wherein they participate in orientation sessions (playgrounds) to find preferred activities, and in specialization sessions (artist studio’s) to develop deep engagement/flow in the preferred activities. Self-direction by participants and a psychological safe environment, are the cornerstones of this program. The first group of participants (n=5) took part in a pilot study. A second pilot and full trial will take place early 2023. The activities can address both instrumental (practical utilization) and non-instrumental (existential) creativity, with the upper goal to increase the individuum’s quality of life as the main outcome variable. Besides these three quantitative measures (pre/post), individual open interviews (pre/peri/post) are held and analyzed using thematic and grounded methodologies. We aim to distil the active ingredients to transform a person’s mindset and skill-set to learn that engaging with creativity is a tool for enhancing individual quality of life in a self-empowered manner. We will present the first outcomes of our study in this poster.

Abstract:
Carolyn Heilbrun famously observed that women of the early 20th century had no models for their public lives, no way to learn the “tone of voice in which to speak with authority.” One is reminded of Jean Elshtain's classic study of the tyranny of gender stereotyping as “public” men and “private” women (Elshtain 1981). The mentoring project at APSA invites us, men and women together, to break down the unspoken barrier between our personal stories and our professional persona. As Heilbrun said, we can't be authentic mentors if we don't “tell the truth about (our) own lives” (Heilbrun [1988] 2002, 25). The trouble is that facts are mute. “Facts need testimony to be remembered,” articulate witnesses with sufficient imagination to make the experiences of modern life understandable (Arendt [1969] 1972, 6). Yet to be useful, as well as authentic, imagination must at least attempt to be truthful. Accordingly, please indulge me while I commit an act of public disclosure and do what my mother always said a lady should never do—talk about herself. Doing so is bad manners and, besides, no one really wants to hear it, she said. I plead guilty to the former, but about the latter I have my doubts. Mentoring in political science is based on the premise that other people need to see reflections of their own careers and lives in yours and vice versa. So at least in this specific context, self-referential writing, the dreaded pronoun “I” may be forgiven.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThis article explores the influence of Articles 20 and 21 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union in the development of EU equal treatment law, with emphasis on forms of discrimination precluded by Council Directive 2000/43 implementing the principle of equal treatment between persons irrespective of racial or ethnic origin, and Directive 2000/78 establishing a general framework for equal treatment in employment and occupation. The author contends that although Articles 20 and 21 are primary measure of EU law, their impact in the development of case law elaborated pursuant to the Directives is relatively muted. This may have stunted the development of jurisprudence on the relationship between Articles 20 and 21 of the Charter, and rules contained in Title VI of the Charter governing its interpretation and application, such as Article 52(3) on the relationship between the Charter and the European Convention on Human Rights, and Article 52(1) on justified limitations. The author forewarns against the emergence of incoherence in the case law in this context, and with respect to the role of Articles 20 and 21 in disputes over the meaning of Directives 2000/43 and 2000/78 and calls for fuller reflection on Charter rules in disputes based on an allegation of discrimination.

Abstract:
Abstract Examining women's magazines and lifestyle coaching, the article explores how positivity imperatives in contemporary culture call forth a happy, confident, hopeful, and vibrant subject during the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis shows how these positivity imperatives acknowledge stress and difficulty, and at times highlight their gendered impacts, yet nevertheless systematically figure responses and solutions in individual, psychological, and often consumerist terms. The discussion demonstrates how positivity imperatives operate not only through verbal advice but also through visual, embodied, and affective means and through an emphasis on developing new social practices—from holding one's body differently, to keeping gratitude journals, to cultivating a new virtual persona for online work meetings. The article highlights a profound paradox: in times of a global pandemic that has affected women disproportionally, and when structural injustices and inequalities have been made ever more visible, positivity and individualized self-care interpellations to women flourish, anger is muted, and critiques of structural inequality are largely silenced. Thus seemingly benign and often undoubtedly well-meaning messages of confidence, calm, and positivity during the pandemic work to buttress a neoliberal imaginary and persistent social inequalities.

Abstract:

Shilina-Conte, Tanya. "Silence as Elective Mutism in Minor Cinema." Film-Philosophy 25, no. 2 (June 2021): 130–50. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/film.2021.0165.

Abstract:
This article advances mutism as a creative mode and conceptual tool to treat silence in cinema. Whereas mutism can be a productive concept for the study of auditory and visual absence in a broader theoretical framework, my focus here is on the silence of film characters. Drawing on correspondences between the critical and the clinical in Gilles Deleuze’s writing, I argue that adopting mutism as a tool of film-philosophy permits us to supersede traditional film analysis and examine silence not as an interpretive condition at the level of the plot but as a critical-clinical mode of experimentation related to the symptomatology of life. After presenting a brief clinical history of “elective” and “selective” mutism, I then draw on the suppressed understanding of “elective mutism”. I demonstrate that “elective mutism”, which might appear to be a negative and powerless disorder in its clinical presentation, transforms itself into an affirmative and empowering (dis)order that inspires creative experimentation in cinema. In postwar films with mute protagonists, such as Ingmar Bergman’s Persona (1960), “elective mutism” engenders a negative mode of existence in its symptomatology, which can be analysed according to the tenets of Theodor W. Adorno’s philosophy of negativity. By contrast, Deleuze’s philosophy of affirmativity and the concept of minor cinema allow for a renewed positive examination of “elective mutism” in more recent films with silent characters, such as Elia Suleiman’s Palestinian quartet (1996; 2002; 2009; 2019). Approaching minor cinema as both a cinema of experimentation and minoritarian cinema, I contend that in films made by minorities mutism becomes more pronouncedly “elective” in an affirmative sense. As a mode of protest and resistance, “elective mutism” is not only a rejection of the present status quo but also an expression of futurity. Finally, I maintain that the concept of “elective mutism” can relate to and stimulate the discussion of many contemporary sociopolitical phenomena.
