Abstract:
Summary We propose a test of independence of two multivariate random vectors, given a sample from the underlying population. Our approach is based on the estimation of mutual information, whose decomposition into joint and marginal entropies facilitates the use of recently developed efficient entropy estimators derived from nearest neighbour distances. The proposed critical values may be obtained by simulation in the case where an approximation to one marginal is available or by permuting the data otherwise. This facilitates size guarantees, and we provide local power analyses, uniformly over classes of densities whose mutual information satisfies a lower bound. Our ideas may be extended to provide new goodness-of-fit tests for normal linear models based on assessing the independence of our vector of covariates and an appropriately defined notion of an error vector. The theory is supported by numerical studies on both simulated and real data.

Abstract:
This research developed a decision-making process in the agribusiness management system and analyzed the behavior of fixed point for identifying the position of agribusiness interaction. Agribusiness is represented as node that work together in the market to maintain the stability of market. Based on agribusiness management and data modeling, there are four conditions of the inter-company networks: (1) mutual dependence, (2) mutual independence, (3) unbalanced dependece, (4) unbalanced independence. The experiment results are the mutual dependence conditioan the fixed point towards stable value come near 0. The mutual independence, fixed point towards stable value, but stability value still not yet come near 0. The unbalanced dependece, fixed point oscillate and convergence. While the unbalanced independence, fixed point start oscillation.

Abstract:
This paper examines how board independence and director incentives in the mutual fund industry affect fund expenses, performance, and compliance. It is based on a hand-collected panel dataset of mutual fund governance characteristics from 1995 through 2004, which covers about 60% of assets listed in the CRSP mutual fund database. The results show that funds overseen by an independent chair charge fees that are 12 basis points lower and that the fraction of independent directors is associated with higher fees during the earlier part of the sample and with lower fees during the latter part. Both measures of board independence are associated with lower fund performance, although funds with higher director ownership and lower unexplained compensation charge lower fees and deliver higher returns. Fund board characteristics do not seem to affect the likelihood of litigation by regulators and shareholders. These results suggest that fund investors do not necessarily benefit from greater board independence if boards negotiate low fees without closely evaluating fund performance. In contrast, higher director ownership and relatively low compensation seem to align incentives between fund boards and investors.

Abstract:
The Indian mutual fund industry witnessed a remarkable performance in the past 30 years. After independence, with the joint effort of the Indian government and the Reserve Bank of India, the establishment of Unit Trust of India marked the beginning of the mutual fund industry in India. With the opening of mutual fund industry in India, investors started taking the advantage of multiple investment opportunities. This leads to increase in savings to the funds along with banks. Mutual funds have given consistent favorable returns over the past year despite of slow growth. For making an investment in a highly sophisticated and complex financial market, investors need the support of financial experts to take an informed decision. These financial experts are mutual funds who act as an intermediary. Association of Mutual Funds in India is established to protect the interests of mutual funds along with its unit holders and to ensure the development of Indian mutual fund industry on ethical and professional lines. Today, investors prefers to invest in mutual funds amongst other investment options as mutual funds ensures protection of their interest by making an optimum investment decision making. Investment in mutual funds proved to be advantageous to those investors who are ready to take higher risk in order to earn higher return but they lack adequate knowledge of the market.

Abstract:
The analysis of independence between statistical randomness tests has had great attention in the literature recently. Dependency detection between statistical randomness tests allows one to discriminate statistical randomness tests that measure similar characteristics, and thus minimize the amount of statistical randomness tests that need to be used. In this work, a method for detecting statistical dependency by using mutual information is proposed. The main advantage of using mutual information is its ability to detect nonlinear correlations, which cannot be detected by the linear correlation coefficient used in previous work. This method analyzes the correlation between the battery tests of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, used as a standard in the evaluation of randomness. The results of the experiments show the existence of statistical dependencies between the tests that have not been previously detected.

Abstract:
In July 1866, Lima conducted its independence celebrations with great fanfare. The festivities began at the main portal of the walled city, where the members of various patriotic associations gathered to celebrate Independence Day. The participants included the Sociedad de Fundadores de la Independencia, the veteran corps from both the Independence Wars and from the recent war with Spain, the national fire brigades, and the members of an artisan society named the Sociedad de Artesanos de Auxilios Mutuos. Together they sang the national anthem while standing at the foot of a Tree of Liberty, a republican symbol dating back to the French Revolution. They subsequently marched into the city, thus initiating two days of celebrations that included fireworks displays and an intricate reenactment, in Lima's central plaza, of the recent naval combat with Spain. In the course of the ceremonies, two artisans were presented with prizes, one for the most outstanding piece of craftsmanship (in the 1866 celebration the prize was won by Vicente Pedraza for making an organ) and the other for the artisan who had shown the most bravery during the recent military encounter with Spain. The prizes were in the amount of 200 soles. At another point in the celebrations the Chief of the Artisan Fire Brigade gave a patriotic speech and following the speech a young girl offered the President Mariano Ignacio Prado a laurel wreath in the name of the artisans.

Abstract:
In their theories of international order, Hobbes and Kant are not as far apart as earlier interpreters have claimed. Both consider peace between states and mutual respect for their sovereign independence to be necessary for securing domestic order. For both Hobbes and Kant, order arises from the very “independency” of states in a manner that is different from the independence of individuals in a state of nature. Both regard the independency of states and their commitment to the prosperity of their subjects as principles that support a long-term orientation toward peaceable cooperation. The most significance difference between Hobbes and Kant concerning international order arises from Kant’s attributing to individuals a cosmopolitan right that makes the international order more subject to potential conflict concerning the rights of individuals, but also gives his theory a stronger normative framework for the development of shared norms than what is found in Hobbes’s political theory.

Abstract:
In this paper a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for two double Wiener integrals to be statistically independent, first in the case of symmetric and continuous kernels. It is also shown that, for more than two double Wiener integrals, pairwise independence implies mutual independence. After that, the continuity condition on the kernels is somewhat relaxed, and it is shown that Craig's (1943, Annals of Mathematical Statistics 14, 195–197) theorem on the independence of quadratic forms in normal variables is a special case of the result obtained for the case of discontinuous kernels.

Abstract:
Quantitatively identifying direct dependencies between variables is an important task in data analysis, in particular for reconstructing various types of networks and causal relations in science and engineering. One of the most widely used criteria is partial correlation, but it can only measure linearly direct association and miss nonlinear associations. However, based on conditional independence, conditional mutual information (CMI) is able to quantify nonlinearly direct relationships among variables from the observed data, superior to linear measures, but suffers from a serious problem of underestimation, in particular for those variables with tight associations in a network, which severely limits its applications. In this work, we propose a new concept, “partial independence,” with a new measure, “part mutual information” (PMI), which not only can overcome the problem of CMI but also retains the quantification properties of both mutual information (MI) and CMI. Specifically, we first defined PMI to measure nonlinearly direct dependencies between variables and then derived its relations with MI and CMI. Finally, we used a number of simulated data as benchmark examples to numerically demonstrate PMI features and further real gene expression data from Escherichia coli and yeast to reconstruct gene regulatory networks, which all validated the advantages of PMI for accurately quantifying nonlinearly direct associations in networks.

Abstract:
The independence of Latin America from colonial rule in the first decades of the nineteenth century is generally held to have broken the bonds which had linked Europe to the Americas for three centuries. This article contends that a re-examination of the decade of the 1820s reveals the persistence, as well as the reconfiguration, of connections between the Old World and the New after the dissolution of the Iberian Atlantic monarchies. Some of these multi-faceted connections are introduced and explored, most notably commercial ties, intellectual and cultural influences, immigration, financial obligations, the slave trade and its suppression, and diplomatic negotiations. Recognition and appreciation of these connections has important consequences for our understandings of the history of the Atlantic World, the ‘Age of Revolutions’, and Latin American Independence itself.

In spite of many common goals and important intersections, there are also conflicting issues between them. And concept of undertaking is a topic where the point of view of both blocks of regulation differs. A single-layer miniaturized reflectarray element with low sensitivity to mutual coupling effects of surrounding elements is presented in this paper. The configuration is proposed to preserve the effectiveness of the infinite array approach in those applications requiring reflectarrays with very small interelement spacing. The inherent ability of the proposed geometry to be adopted in highly miniaturized cells is demonstrated through an extensive analysis of mutual coupling effects on reflectarray phase design curves. In order to prove the independence of the proposed cell to mutual coupling effect, the phase curve variations due to the presence of different surrounding elements with respect to the case of identical cells are evaluated using the well-known extended local periodicity method. Small and negligible mutual coupling errors are retrieved for the proposed miniaturized unit cell, thus demonstrating lower sensitivity to mutual coupling adverse effects.

AbstractFrom the first decade of Mongolian independence after 1911, nationalist publicists and officials denounced the dominance of foreign merchants and capital in the Mongolian economy. Officials and historians declared co-operatives to be the road for simultaneous improving the peoples' living standards and also strengthening national independence. Yet examination of statistics and the vigorous debates at the early party congresses and Great Khural meetings from 1924 to 1927 shows that the co-operatives were neither effective in their mandate nor popular with the herders they were intended to help. From the beginning, the co-operatives appear to have answered the needs of the new state more than those of the herding populace.

Abstract:
According to Barlow (1989), feature extraction can be understood as finding a statistically independent representation of the probability distribution underlying the measured signals. The search for a statistically independent representation can be formulated by the criterion of minimal mutual information, which reduces to decorrelation in the case of gaussian distributions. If nongaussian distributions are to be considered, minimal mutual information is the appropriate generalization of decorrelation as used in linear Principal Component Analyses (PCA). We also generalize to nonlinear transformations by only demanding perfect transmission of information. This leads to a general class of nonlinear transformations, namely symplectic maps. Conservation of information allows us to consider only the statistics of single coordinates. The resulting factorial representation of the joint probability distribution gives a density estimation. We apply this concept to the real world problem of electrical motor fault detection treated as a novelty detection task.

Abstract:
In this article, Amy Boelé presents a conceptualization of community that challenges the goal of independence as an ultimate ideal. Building on in situ tensions within independence ideologies, she illustrates the contradictions that exist when the approach to achieving community access for individuals with developmental disabilities requires full independence. Such an approach serves as a kind of assimilation to the dominant, nondisabled group's practices, which brings about contradictions that maintain oppressive forces. Using excerpts from interviews and personal recollections, she theorizes how a reconceptualization of community might empower individuals with disabilities to be contributors to their communities. She argues against considering independence as the emancipatory opposition to institutionalization. She contends that true community, as a mutual site of unconditional giving and resisted oppression, is what counters discrimination, segregation, and control, rejecting the false dichotomy of independence and institutionalism.

Abstract:
Unsupervised disentangled representation learning is one of the foundational methods to learn interpretable factors in the data. Existing learning methods are based on the assumption that disentangled factors are mutually independent and incorporate this assumption with the evidence lower bound. However, our experiment reveals that factors in real-world data tend to be pairwise independent. Accordingly, we propose a new method based on a pairwise independence assumption to learn the disentangled representation. The evidence lower bound implicitly encourages mutual independence of latent codes so it is too strong for our assumption. Therefore, we introduce another lower bound in our method. Extensive experiments show that our proposed method gives competitive performances as compared with other state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:
Several possible generalizations of the classical notion of markovianity are given for states defined on a von Neumann algebras generated on a triple of subalgebras. Their mutual relation is discussed in the particular case in which they mutually commute, and the generalization of the classical; time reversal theorem is proved. A structure theorem for a class of Markov chains is also proved.

Abstract:
Accurately evaluating statistical independence among random variables is a key element of independent component analysis (ICA). In this letter, we employ a squared-loss variant of mutual information as an independence measure and give its estimation method. Our basic idea is to estimate the ratio of probability densities directly without going through density estimation, thereby avoiding the difficult task of density estimation. In this density ratio approach, a natural cross-validation procedure is available for hyperparameter selection. Thus, all tuning parameters such as the kernel width or the regularization parameter can be objectively optimized. This is an advantage over recently developed kernel-based independence measures and is a highly useful property in unsupervised learning problems such as ICA. Based on this novel independence measure, we develop an ICA algorithm, named least-squares independent component analysis.
