Abstract:
Many of the challenges facing the accounting profession involve personality characteristics of accountants. Personality theories have generated a rich research stream outside accounting and are widely applied in other disciplines and professions. Yet little research using these theories has been done in accounting. To redress this imbalance, this paper examines Jungian personality-type psychology—one of the main personality theories—and the major psychometric instrument that has arisen from it—the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The MBTI has been extensively tested for reliability and validity, and used in a large number of basic and education research studies. Results from reliability and validity testing indicate that the MBTI reliably measures personality characteristics predicted by Jungian theory. A small amount of published research has been conducted in accounting using the MBTI. These 16 articles are reviewed, with suggestions for additional research.

Abstract:
This empirical study examined the relationship between Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality types and preferred teaching methods for 507 Saint Joseph’s College of Maine undergraduate students. The students completed two instruments: the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®, Form M (Myers, McCaulley, Quenk, & Hammer, 1998), and a 27-item scale that measured preferred teaching methods in the classroom. Descriptive and inferential statistics indicated that the five most prominent personality types were ISFJ, ESFJ, ESFP, ENFP, and ISTJ. Sensing-Feeling (S-F) preference was the most common followed by Sensing-Judging (S-J) preference in the top five personality types. Across all MBTI dichotomies, the students indicated a preference for teaching methods that involved lecturer-student interaction, using some visual tools such as PowerPoint, and demonstrations and practice. The least preferred teaching methods involved unscheduled quizzes, lecture where the professor talks with no visuals, and library research using experiential activities. Significant differences were obtained between the MBTI dichotomies and preferred teaching methods. The results demonstrate the importance of faculty tailoring and adjusting their instruction to accommodate the needs of their students to increase student achievement, motivation, and engagement in their classroom.

Abstract:
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a well-known personality test that assigns a personality type to a user by using four traits dichotomies. For many years, people have used MBTI as an instrument to develop self-awareness and to guide their personal decisions. Previous researches have good successes in predicting Extraversion-Introversion (E/I), Sensing-Intuition (S/N) and Thinking-Feeling (T/F) dichotomies from textual data but struggled to do so with Judging-Perceiving (J/P) dichotomy. J/P dichotomy in MBTI is a non-separable part of MBTI that have significant inference on human behavior, perception and decision towards their surroundings. It is an assessment on how someone interacts with the world when making decision. This research was set out to evaluate the performance of the individual features and classifiers for J/P dichotomy in personality computing. At the end, data leakage was found in dataset originating from the Personality Forum Café, which was used in recent researches. The results obtained from the previous research on this dataset were suggested to be overly optimistic. Using the same settings, this research managed to outperform previous researches. Five machine learning algorithms were compared, and LightGBM model was recommended for the task of predicting J/P dichotomy in MBTI personality computing.

Abstract:
The construct validity of the Chinese version of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (Myers & Briggs, 1962) was examined by conducting two analyses – factor analysis and correlation analysis on four different personality tests in their revised Chinese versions and comparing the corresponding results. A sample of 998 undergraduates in China was used: 798 males and 200 females ranging in age from 19 to 23. Four Chinese-version personality questionnaires, Myers-Briggs Type Indication Form G, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2, 16 Personality Factors and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, were used. The results showed that either a 4- or a 5-factor design appears to be the best choice for the Chinese version of the MBTI, the SN scale can be further divided into two parts, with one dealing with the problem “where to gather or perceive information”, and the other involving attitudes towards, and methods for selecting, information. The JP scale was largely unitary in nature compared with the 3 other scales of the MBTI.

Abstract:
Blood type still leads to an assumption about its relation to some personality aspects. This study observes preprocessing methods for improving the classification accuracy of MBTI data to determine blood type. The training and testing data use 250 data from the MBTI questionnaire answers given by 250 respondents. The classification uses the k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) algorithm. Without preprocessing, k-NN results in about 32 % accuracy, so it needs some preprocessing to handle data imbalance before the classification. The proposed preprocessing consists of two-stage, the first stage is the unsupervised resample, and the second is the supervised resample. For the validation, it uses ten cross-validations. The result of k-Nearest Neighbor classification after using these proposed preprocessing stages has finally increased the accuracy, F-score, and recall significantly.

Abstract:
Results from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) for 259 nursing students were compared with their achievement on examinations in an undergraduate course in anatomy and physiology. Factor analysis demonstrated that no relationship existed between any of the eight individual personality traits purported to be measured by MBTI (i.e., E, Extrovert; I, Introvert; S, Sensing; N, Intuition; T, Thinking; F, Feeling; J, Judging; P, Perceiving) and examination scores in this course. The analysis also showed that the bipolar scales S vs. N and J vs. P collapsed into a single bipolar scale (S/J vs. N/P). This means that the MBTI is only capable of measuring three bipolar scales of personality traits instead of four scales as currently claimed. Contrary to other findings, results from an analysis of variance revealed no meaningful relationship between course achievement and psychological types.

Abstract:
This paper provides a review of research into the relationships between psychological types, as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and managerial attributes, behaviors and effectiveness. The literature review includes an examination of the psychometric properties of the MBTI and the contributions and limitations of research on psychological types. Next, key findings are discussed and used to advance propositions that relate psychological type to diverse topics such as risk tolerance, problem solving, information systems design, conflict management and leadership. We conclude with a research agenda that advocates: (I) the exploration of potential psychometric refinements of the MBTI, (2) more rigorous research designs, and (3) a broadening of the scope of managerial research into type.

Over 4,000 British adults completed two widely used personality-type tests at an Assessment Centre, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior. Both correlational and regressional analyses showed modest overlap. Inclusion was related to Introversion–Extraversion and Control to the Thinking-Feeling Dimension. The Sensing–Intuition and Judging–Perceiving dimensions of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator had only weak correlations with the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation–Behavior scores (all values below .08). The difference scores between Wanted and Expressed on the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation–Behavior indicated that the Thinking, Perceiving, Extraverts had the highest differences between Perceived and Wanted scores.

Abstract:
The cognitive science paradigm, with its computational and information processing models of the human mind, dominates much of current accounting information systems (AIS) research. While these models aid our understanding of cognition, it is unclear how much of the mind they explain. Personality type theory (PTT) is one supplement to cognitive science. PTT is especially useful for AIS researchers because an extensively tested and validated psychometric instrument based on PTT, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), is available for use in practice and research. We provide an overview of PTT and the MBTI and discuss how AIS researchers can use PTT to complement and extend current research initiatives. We highlight opportunities for PTT-based AIS research by posing research questions, the investigation of which contributes to the AIS literature.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a useful instrument for team building, strengthening communications, decision making, and for diagnosing organizational dysfunctions. The MBTI is, however, also misued if used for employee selection, or to unfairly stereotype. Misuses of the MBTI and not seeing the instruments' full potential in the organization, stem largely from inadquate training. Training in the MBTI should be expanded to teach how to typewatch, shadow integration, and how to use the MBTI to improve customer relations.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a collection of techniques for personality development. Meta programmes, which are habitual ways of inputting, sorting and filtering the information found in the world around us, are a vital factor in NLP. Differences in meta programmes result in significant differences in behaviour from one person to another. Personality types can be recognized through utilizing and analysing meta programmes. There are different methods to predict personality types based on meta programmes. The Myers–Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI) is currently considered as one of the most popular and reliable methods. In this study, a new machine learning method has been developed for personality type prediction based on the MBTI. The performance of the new methodology presented in this study has been compared to other existing methods and the results show better accuracy and reliability. The results of this study can assist NLP practitioners and psychologists in regards to identification of personality types and associated cognitive processes.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore personality type differences among high school band, string orchestra, and choir students according to ensemble membership. Participants ( N = 355) were high school students who had participated in their school’s band, orchestra, or choir for 1 year or more. The author administered the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to determine the personality type for each participant. Personality types were compared among the three ensembles as well as with published MBTI high school norms. Results indicated that personality type differences existed among the ensembles and that there were significant differences in the comparisons with MBTI norms. A significant personality type difference was found between orchestra and choir students along the Extraversion-Introversion dichotomy, indicating that choir students were more likely to be Extraverted when compared to orchestra students. There were no significant differences among the ensembles on the Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, or Judging-Perceiving scales. Compared to high school norms, the students in each ensemble were significantly more likely to be Intuitive and Feeling. The band students were significantly more likely to be Perceiving, and the choir students were significantly more likely to be Extraverted.

Abstract:
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a reliable and valid screening test for describing the natural personality of an individual, especially in the medical field. The indicator gives an individual a four-letter abbreviation summarizing his/her personality characteristics. The categories include: extraverted (E) / introverted (I), sensing (S) / intuition (N), feeling (F) / thinking (T), and perception (P) / judgment (J). The personality types of physicians vary considerably across the medical field. Specific personality types indicated by the Myers-Briggs fit better with certain medical specialties than others. The alignment of physician-patient personalities and its effect on patient confidence and compliance have potential importance in the management of some disorders, such as, for example, substance abuse. This review will examine the alignment of physician-patient personalities and its effect on patient confidence and treatment outcomes.

Abstract:
Construct validity is a core issue in the design of a standard psychological instrument. There are many contrasting arguments about the factor structure of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI, Myers, 1962). A variety of methods and sample sizes used in prior studies has created these differences. Therefore, this study explored factor structure of the Chinese version MBTI, Form G based on two samples with roughly equal sample sizes, using the same method. Results supported construct validity of the Chinese version of the MBTI-G (Miao, Huangfu, Chia, & Ren, 2004), for there were four factors extracted based on the two samples respectively. However, factor analysis results raised questions about the nature of the Sensation-Intuition scale. This study provided evidence that, for a collectivist culture, the description of items related to the individual's own preference and attitude or other people's value and attitude would affect the results of the Chinese version MBTI-G in construct validity evaluation.

Abstract:
Globalization and domestic competition are forcing businesses to rethink the human resources utilization process, and one method for considering again this challenge is creating a team culture. One key to this process for human resources development is the understanding of how to create the most successful teams. The use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a tool often used by business to achieve the goals of building work teams. College business majors must be introduced to the MBTI and to the dynamics of team building as a measurable skill necessary for their work environment. This research focuses on college classes in business communications, the directed study of the MBTI, and the heterogeneous mix of type in teams necessary for high learning outcomes. Specific pedagogical directions are provided for two team-building projects in writing, research, and oral presentation to small groups, thus meeting multiple course objectives.

Abstract:
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between personality characteristics, as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) (form G), and an acute pain response in 107 postadolescent men. Subjects included 107 military school cadets. Each subject performed a cold pressor test (CPT) and was evaluated for pain threshold and pain tolerance times. Each was then evaluated for preference on eight personality characteristics: extraversion, introversion, sensing, intuition, thinking, feeling, judging, and perception. The personality characteristics were measured by the MBT1 (form G). Pearson product-moment correlations between the pain threshold and tolerance times and the eight personality characteristic scores were nonsignificant. The results indicated there was no relationship between the eight personality characteristics, as measured by the MBTI (form G), and pain threshold or pain tolerance, as measured by the CPT, The findings also indicated a low correlation between pain threshold and pain tolerance (r=.25).

This article makes a strong case for attempting to connect the measurement of leadership skills and entrepreneurial orientation using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) as a measurement instrument. There are other tools available such as the Entrepreneurial Quotient (EQ), the Entrepreneurial Attitude Orientation (EAO), and the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) (Huefner, Hunt, & Robinson, 1996). While each of these instruments has promise and should be further evaluated, at this stage the MBTI appears to have the greatest utility for future planned research.

Welsh, Matthew B., Abdulaziz Alhakim, Finlay Ball, Joseph Dunstan, and Steve Begg. "Do personality traits affect decision-making ability: can MBTI type predict biases?" APPEA Journal 51, no. 1 (2011): 359. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/aj10022.

Full text
Abstract:
From decades of psychological research, the observation that people’s decisions are often biased by particular decision-making flaws has led to discussions of what can be done to de-bias decisions. A key area of research is the study of individual differences in decision-making ability–that is, whether certain people are less susceptible to particular biases. Much of this research, however, has focused on the impact of intelligence on decision-making ability. This, however, is of limited use in industries such as oil and gas where, due to hiring criteria that commonly include at least a bachelor’s degree, a restricted range of intelligence is observed. Given this, it may be more fruitful to consider other sources of potential differences in decision-making ability such as personality traits. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) (Myers et al, 1998) is a personality test based on Jung’s 1921 theory of psychological types (see, e.g., Jung, 1971). People are sorted into one of 16 categories based on their responses to the personality test. Although the test is widely used to identify leadership styles and preferences and therefore influence recruitment decisions (including within the petroleum industry), the impact of Myers-Briggs personality type on decision making itself and, in particular, on decisionmaking biases, has not been thoroughly investigated. A large number of specific, cognitive biases have been identified by psychologists and in this study we have chosen to investigate two of particular interest in the oil and gas industry: overconfidence and risk attitude/framing. It has been shown (Welsh and Begg, 2008; Welsh et al, 2007) that these biases can have disastrous consequences on the value of projects in the petroleum industry. If it is possible, therefore, to use an easily administered and well-known test (MBTI) to quantify and predict an individual’s susceptibility to bias, we can improve decisions in the industry by ensuring that the right people are employed to make decisions where bias may prove to be a problem. To test this, we distributed a survey–which included the complete Myers-Briggs test and questions to identify biases in the respondent’s responses–to engineering students at the University of Adelaide, petroleum industry employees and a small number of employees from other industries. Individual MBTI distinctions (e.g., extroverts versus introverts) were studied for bias tendencies. We discuss the observed relationships between Myers-Briggs type and decision biases and their relevance to decision making in the petroleum industry. We conclude that while there do seem to be some effects of personality on susceptibility to decision-making biases, these are not necessarily what one might expect given the descriptions attached to specific MBTI types. They are also relatively weak effects and, as such, the use of the Myers-Briggs as a tool for assessing decision-making ability is not supported by our results.

Abstract:
Nowadays, augmented reality is becoming more and more popular because it can help individuals learn about many things, such as buildings, books, historical places, etc. in real time. The Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test, a questionnaire-based test, is used to determine personality type, which influences perceptions of the world and the ways in which individuals make decisions. This system is based on C.G Jung’s typological theory and was developed by Katherine and Isabel Briggs. The purpose of this paper is to use the MBTI personality test to define the personality types of users. To accomplish this aim, we used Unity3D, Processing, and Vuforia SDK. First, the processing program was used to produce results from sixteen images and send them to Unity3D. Second, Vuforia SDK was used to recognize masks in real time and map images to the masks. Then, Unity3D displayed the final mapping result.

This article casts new and refreshing light on Florence Nightingale’s life and work by examining her personality type. Using the theory-based Myers—Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the author examines Nightingale’s personality type and reveals that she was an introverted-intuitive-thinking-judging type. The merit of using the MBTI is that it allows us to more clearly understand three major areas of Nightingale’s life that have been partially unacknowledged or misunderstood: her spiritual development as a practicing mystic, her management of her chronic illness to maintain her prodigious work output, and her chosen strategies to transform her visionary ideas into new health care and social realities.

Abstract:
The Myers-Briggs type indicator (MBTI) was given to 163 students in an undergraduate Human Physiology course at a large state university. Selected MBTI personality types were compared for achievement in the course using a t test to compare total points earned. High grades were earned by students stronger in the traits of introversion (I) and judgment (J), whereas the extraverted (E) and perceptive (P) types had the lowest grades and dropped out of the course in the largest numbers. When combinations of MBTI types were compared, the highest grades were earned as follows: SJ greater than ST greater than IN greater than IJ greater than IS (S, sensing; T, thinking; N, intuitive). This ranking indicates that a sensing personality also has a strong relationship to achievement in this Human Physiology course when it is combined with judgment, thinking, or introversion. Instructors and students need to be aware of the relationship between personality and learning so they can modify their teaching style and learning behavior to enhance academic achievement.

This paper presents a model for using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) as a self-awareness tool in baccalaureate social work education. The model is based on eight years of use in one Social Work Program. The paper also presents the results of an exploratory study done to assess the model. The MBTI is a scientific instrument used to indicate different preferences on four dimensions: source of energy, perception, decision-making, and relation to the external world. The development and purpose of the MBTI are discussed and a description of the components of the instrument is included. Techniques for effective and ethical testing and use in the classroom to promote self-awareness are provided. Implications for social work educators are also addressed.

Abstract:
Beneath the surface of some significant contemporary management practices there exists evidence of pre-modern cosmology. The influence of astrological and alchemical ideas on organisational conduct has not, however, attracted very much serious social-scientific attention to date. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTIÒ) is described and reasons discussed for considering it to be a prime example of the underpinning of the modern by the pre-modern. C.G. Jung's role as mediator between pre-modern and modern is considered, with some investigation devoted to the four function-types and two attitude-types which he propounded, their origins in earlier symbolism, and their influence on subsequent psychological theory and practice. An astro-genealogical account of the development of the MBTI is offered, taking into account its debt to Renaissance and earlier forms of thinking and symbolism. In conclusion, a warning note is sounded: the modern need to place psychology on an entirely scientific footing can manifest as a dogmatic, belief-driven revisionism that produces a fragmentary, potentially alienating, view of the individual.

This paper makes some assertions about the personality traits of academics and students. These traits can create harmony or discord for individual students, depending on whether their approach to learning matches the teacher's approach to teaching. Although some teaching strategies can be useful for a whole class, differences among students make it necessary to diversify those strategies.

Abstract:
A convenience sample of 209 participants completed the Grief Pattern Inventory (GPI) together with the Hogan Grief Reaction Checklist (HGRC), the Integration of Stressful Life Events Scale (ISLES), and the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Alpha coefficients of the GPI’s intuitive and instrumental subscales were improved by eliminating low-performing items and empirically reassigning items from the GPI dissonant subscale. The two modified scales showed a near zero intercorrelation indicating they were independent constructs in this sample, a conclusion further verified by factor analysis. Both styles correlated with distress measures from the HGRC and correlated negatively with adaptation indicators from the ISLES, though the findings were stronger for intuitive grievers. MBTI findings revealed that intuitive grievers endorsed significantly more “feeling” in how processing occurs while grievers who preferred sensing/thinking functions more often identified with the instrumental grief pattern. Implications of these findings for scholars and clinicians are discussed.
