The Holarctic genus Manica Jurine, 1807 are mysterious and primitive ants from the tribe Myrmicini of the subfamily Myrmicinae. The first fossil species of this genus, †Manica andrannae Zharkov and Dubovikoff, sp. n. is described from the Baltic amber (ca. 33.9–37.8 million years ago). X-ray microcomputed tomography (µCT) was used to access morphological features and accurately measure the new species. A straightened and painted 3D model is also proposed as a reconstruction of the worker. The new species differs from all extant species of the genus by the propodeum with a weakly convex dorsum

The Holarctic genus Manica Jurine, 1807 are mysterious and primitive ants from the tribe Myrmicini of the subfamily Myrmicinae. A new species (Manica shanyii He et al., 2024) from China has recently been described, which was the first documented appearance of the genus and a new species in China. In this study, the key features of M. shanyii are compared with Manica species and the related genus Myrmica Latreille, 1804. Morphological features are demonstrated here, which makes it possible to divide two close genera Manica and Myrmica. After studying the specimens of this species, we transfer M

Abstract Seed harvesting by ants refers to the removal and subsequent consumption of seeds (i.e. seed predation), as distinct from the dispersal of seeds possessing an ant-attracting appendage (i.e. myrmecochory). Outside Australia, seed harvesting is primarily a phenomenon of arid regions. The seeds of ephemeral plants represent a valuable food source in desert environments, which typically support large populations of granivores, mostly rodents, birds, and ants (Mares and Rosenzweig 1978; Brown et al. 1979; Abramsky 1983). The ants are primarily species of the myrmicine genera Pogonomyrmex,

Abstract The fungus-growing ants of the tribe Attini (subfamily Myrmicinae) rely on the cultivation of fungi for food. The cultivated fungi are the sole source of nutrition for the larvae and the principal source of nutrition for the adults. All of the approximately 210 described attine ant species occur exclusively in the New World. Because the Attini are monophyletic and because no other ants are known to cultivate fungi, fungiculture is thought to have arisen a single time in ants. Attine ant fungi culture is perhaps the most unusual example of the more general phenomenon of ant agricultur
