Abstract:
A striking feature of myth among the Telefolmin of Papua New Guinea is the way in which narrative events are situated in known and named places. Myth’s inscription on the landscape contributes to ritual’s evocative power, but, beyond this, it gives myth a bridgehead in the everyday world that invites a mythic construction of contemporary events. Using the visit of Papua New Guinea’s Governor General as an example, I argue that Telefolmin were able to effectively mobilize the power of the sacred site of Telefolip — and its mythic associations — in novel historical circumstances, a possibility e

Different kinds of omissions sometimes occur, or are perceived to occur, in traditional narratives and in tradition-inspired literature. A familiar instance is when a narrator realizes that he or she does not fully remember the story that he or she has begun to tell, and so leaves out part of it, which for listeners may possibly result in an unintelligible narrative. But many instances of narrative gap are not so obvious. From straightforward, objective gaps one can distinguish less-obvious subjective gaps: in many cases narrators do not leave out anything crucial or truly relevant from their

Abstract The present paper starts, in its analysis, with the attempt to identify possible connections between the mythical universe and Eugène Ionesco’s play The Chairs. Noticing that the definition given to Ionesco’s theatre as a theatre of the absurd is outdated and that alternative concepts, such as parabolic drama, are already being proposed, we examine Ionesco’s theatricality from the perspective of the anti-theatre. Also, due to the fact that theatre is defined, by the representatives of political theatre, as ritual, we make a few considerations upon Ionesco’s anti-theatre viewed as anti

Although postsocialism is often discussed in terms of revisiting and dispelling the myths of the socialist past, this article suggests that it is more productive to understand postsocialism in terms of different kinds of mythic constructions – ‘myths from the future’, namely the myths of the capitalist West and East. Situating our research in the historical context of the Cold War, we approach the study of mythic constructions in state socialist and postsocialist societies through the analysis of childhood memories. Abstract Protection barriers are implemented to provide corrosion protection for offshore windfarm monopile foundations. Such protection methods have been applied since the beginning of the offshore windfarm industry with regard to the external surfaces and more recently, since 2010's for the internal surfaces. Design life extension combined with an increase of foundations dimensions lead currently to the requirement for high efficiency / high capability protection barriers. Main findings and engineering lessons learned on how to optimize the above protection barriers design are reviewed in th

This article focuses on analyzing the concepts of S. Lebovici, which refer to the complexity of the psychic conception of the idea of the child, starting from a psychoanalytic perspective that considers the conscious and unconscious dimensions of the psyche. S. Lebovici identifies several patterns of representation of the child, in this sense the French psychoanalyst describes 4 psychic constructs that refer to the image of the child in the minds of parents: the phantasmatic child, the imaginary child, the mythic child, the narcissistic child. This article presents the definition of myth as one of the important components of ethnic culture. Some ancient mythical systems are analyzed: Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indian, Greek, Roman. It is found that in later historical epochs, with the systematization and recognition of the value of scientific knowledge, the merit of the myth of exemplifying reality becomes more and more plausible, remaining as a value at the level of aesthetic exercise. All world and national religions, as institutional exponents of some myths to the detriment of others, have had a confrontation with mythological pheno

Halifax Harbour has many myths associated with its history and some of them are related to the geology. Here we present three of the more popular ones and the modern evidence to clarify the story. They are: 1. That a curse has been placed on the bridges of The Narrows, 2. That the Halifax Explosion of 1917 in The Narrows created a large crater on the seabed of the harbour, and 3. That a tunnel was built to connect Georges Island with Citadel Hill under the harbour floor.

In this paper we discuss several pervasive myths and misperceptions about teams and teamwork. We also introduce an evidence-based framework for moving beyond these myths and misperceptions. We shared several statements about teamwork to over 1,300 working adults. On average, across all the myths and respondents, 62% of respondents agreed with the myths we presented, 21% were uncertain, and only 17% disagree. This suggests that over 80% of respondents either endorsed, or expressed uncertainty about, myths relating to fundamental aspects of teamwork. Given the pervasiveness and lack of clarity s

Immigration Realities is a thorough, research-based analysis that examines and debunks widespread myths surrounding immigration while highlighting the contributions of immigrants. Authors Ernesto Castañeda and Carina Cione present an alternative view to common misconceptions by contextualizing migration within broader global frameworks. While the book’s perspective may not align with all viewpoints, its well-supported insights make it a valuable resource for readers interested in a nuanced, evidence-based understanding of migration, encouraging a thoughtful approach to policy and public dialog

The article provides unique quantitative insights about highly secretive and poorly understood speculation in the oil market. To demystify the behavior of speculators, we look at the problem from five different angles. First, we explain how the presence of large over-the-counter (OTC) oil derivatives market leads to mischaracterization of traditional hedgers and speculators. We then explain what makes oil speculation special and different from speculation across many other commodities. Consequently, we identify the winners and the losers in the oil futures market. The Growing Fear of Regulatory Overlap in AI-Driven Healthcare The EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) has ignited discussions across the healthcare industry, especially among manufacturers of AI-powered medical devices. A major concern is whether these devices, already scrutinized under the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) 2017/745, will now face an additional regulatory burden—a second certification under the AI Act. This would mean double the compliance costs, twice the paperwork, and unnecessary delays for market entry. This paper shows that double certification is redundant and is not

The purpose of this text or dissertation is to throw some basic light on a fundamental problem concerning manhood, namely the question of evil, its main sources, dynamics and importance for human attitudes and behaviour. The perspective behind the analysis itself is that of psychology. Somebody, or many, may feel at bit nervous by the word “evil” itself. It may very well be seen as too connected to religion, myth and even superstition. Yet those who are motivated to lose oneself in the subject retain a deep interest in human destructiveness, malevolence and hate, significant themes pointing at
