You, Xiao. "Archetype and archetypal image in Chinese myths, legends and tales." Thesis, University of Essex, 2018. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/23484/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to examine Chinese myths, legends and tales from the perspective of analytical psychology. Considering that analytical psychologists have paid little attention to Chinese myths and that previous studies on Chinese myths from the standpoint of analytical psychology are lacking, this thesis investigates the universal archetype and its cultural carrier, or archetypal image, in Chinese mythical texts. First, this study examines both Jung’s engagement with Chinese culture, in order to see the function and significance of Chinese thought in analytical psychology, and the reception of Jungian thought in China, in order to demonstrate the lack of research on Chinese myths from the perspective of the theory of analytical psychology. Second, the study defines the concepts of archetype and archetypal image, and adopts the method of myth analysis from Jung and his followers to interpret Chinese motifs and symbols. Third, interpretations from the perspective of analytical psychology are applied to three motifs in Chinese culture: creation myths, flood myths and erotic anima figures. These provide materials for exploring similarities and differences in the mechanism and development of the human psyche between East and West. Fourth, this research concentrates on discussing two important Chinese symbols – Long (dragon) and Qi lin (unicorn) and their counterparts in western culture – by analysing these symbols at both the archetypal and cultural levels. The final part of this study explores the possible therapeutic value of Chinese myths in helping analysts to comprehend the human psyche and analysands to understand themselves in greater depth. This thesis fills a gap in the understanding of Chinese myth by means of Jungian psychology with the hope also of applying analytical psychology to Chinese culture more thoroughly and insightfully in both theoretical and practical contexts.

Pike, Jonathan. "Magic Swords, Mythic Creatures, and Mighty Warriors: Archetypal Patterns in Fantasy Literature." Thesis, Boston College, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/438.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Timothy Duket
Synthesizing elements of so many traditions, fantasy has grown into perhaps the most pervasive genre of literature in the western world. The archetypal adventures and themes that have been carried into fantasy through ancient legends and myths have survived over the ages because it was decided long ago those tales had great worth. It was the unpopular and poorly formed legends that died out, while the superior stories were carried from culture to culture under new guises. In this way, fantasy can be seen as the culmination of human legends, filtered throughout history so that only the great tales remain. On what greater pedestal could a form of literature be based? Fantasy has even continued the refinement process in the last fifty years, with active writers like Jordan and Goodkind incorporating elements from the greatest of previous fantasy authors like Tolkien, Howard, and Donaldson. Thus fantasy is continually improving upon itself and evolving in new ways through its modification of old themes. How long can critics refuse to recognize fantasy as a legitimate form? With such admirable authors writing today, it seems logical that the answer would be sooner rather than later. Might fantasy be vanquished by sneering critics and replaced with another form of fiction? Gandalf claims even the Wise cannot see all ends, and while in no way do I profess such wisdom, I find it difficult to believe that, as the successor of mythology, fantasy will ever fizzle and die. A force greater than all the magic swords and rings combined would be necessary to kill four thousand years of human imagination

Brunger, Fern M. "Safeguarding Mother Tamil in multicultural Quebec : Sri Lankan legends, Canadian myths, and the politics of culture." Thesis, McGill University, 1994. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=28425.

Abstract:
I examine the concept of "culture" being promoted in the Canadian policy of multiculturalism and by Tamil refugees safeguarding their culture in Quebec. I take culture in its relation to power as my focus. I explore what culture means to the Tamils, and how the Canadian ideology of multiculturalism is implicated in the way Tamil "culture keepers" (re)construct their cultural identity.
This research addresses popular "multiculturalism" movements which use anthropological notions of culture but fail to problematize the notion of culture itself. I illustrate how and why the concept of culture is itself culturally embedded and historically shaped, and thus dense with political implications.
It also addresses anthropological approaches which avoid realist ethnography because of its political implications. I argue that a focus on culture in its relation to power is necessary in order to examine anthropology's own continuing involvement in imperialism.

Aguilar, Angie I. "Not Just a Legend: The Gendered Conquest of a Spanish American Society." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/658.

Abstract:
After the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821) ending Spanish rule, Mexico formed a republic. By the 1880s there was ‘reformation’ in the Mexican church and the growth of ‘modernization’ in a caste based society governed by dictators. Amid all these changes, there was a growth of a nationalist ideology which sought to break free of Spanish roots in search of a new “Mexican” identity. As nationalism unfolded, there was a resurgence of some histories that became legends. I’ve noted a trend among legends with female protagonists, legends tend to portray women in a negative way. Two legends that have caught my attention emerge from the lives of two women from colonial Mexico. One is based on the life of Malinalli (Malintzin), a Nahuatl woman from sixteenth-century Mexico who at a young age was sold into slavery, but eventually became a talented interpreter, advisor and negotiator for Hernán Cortés during conquest. The other legend is about María Magdalena Dávalos y Orosco, a widowed woman from eighteenth-century Mexico who was able to gain control of her husband’s estate and manage many of his properties. More often than not, I’ve found that the legends that transpired from the retelling of an account of past events women’s lives, exclude their accomplishments and emphasize their “deviant” tendencies. Through the use of oral histories, scholarly articles and texts relevant to Malintzin and María Magdalena’s circumstances, I will explore their legends to argue that they have a lot of valuable information to offer.

Coates, G. "Representations of treachery in foundation myths of Iberia : a diachronic study of the legends of Fernán González, Bernardo del Carpio and Sancho II." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2006. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.597789.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the representation of treachery in three foundation myths of Iberia: Fernán González and the independence of Castile, Bernardo del Carpio, and Sancho II and the siege of Zamora. The project is a diachronic study which considers literary versions of these myths from both medieval and Golden Age Spain, with a view to comparing the representation of treachery across two historical time periods which share a close interest in the presentation of Spanish history, and through different literary versions of the legends, in epic, chronicle and theatre. Chapters 2 and 3 of the dissertation treat versions of these myths from the thirteenth century, in the Estoria de España (1252-84), and the Poema de Fernán González (c. 1250), whilst chapters 4 and 5 examine the reproduction of these legends in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, in the theatre of Golden Age Spain. I examine two plays by Juan de la Cueva, Comedia de la muerta del rey don Sancho, y reto de Çamora, por don Diego Ordóñez, and Comedia de la libertad de España por Bernardo del Carpio (1579-81), and four works by Lope de Vega: El casamiento en la muerte (1595-97), Las mocedades de Bernardo del Carpio (1599-1608), El conde Fernán González (1606-12) and Las almenas de Toro (1610-19). Broadly understood, the aim of this study is to provide a fuller understanding of the role of treachery in relation to the dynamics of group identity, both in these literary accounts and beyond.

The present study portrays the situation of São Domingos, a district where the Terra Ronca State Park is situated, not due to its environmental aspects, but especially, because of the oral history bias of its myths, legends and traditions. The objective of the research was to register and to document the diversity of the cultural expressions of the municipal district and to identify reasons for the reduction and disappearance of several manifestations. Therefore, the study opted for an exploratory nature based research, grounded on a qualitative approach. Data collection instruments were defined due to their purposes. Semi-structured interviews, field observations and document analysis were conducted. The Terra Ronca State Park was created in 1989 to protect a valuable speleological complex, in which seven of the thirty largest caves in Brazil are found. That municipal district, located in the goiano northeast, appeared in the period of the gold cycle and is nowadays inserted in an area considered as the poverty corridor of the State of Goiás. Its interior shelters a cultural and religious heritage, which is quite rich and diversified, as the Pilgrimage to Bom Jesus da Lapa , which has its cultural representation with masses, baptisms and parties developed inside a cave. Of the more than three hundred caves which compose the Park, the Terra Ronca cave is the best known and most surrounded by mysteries and legends. Among them, it is said that the cave served as a hiding place for the city s population when the Coluna Prestes , a group of rebels, passed through São Domingos. Nowadays, the people that live in the Park go through problems such as the reduction or disappearance of their cultural expressions, an outstanding characteristic of their regional identity. The results indicated that the implementation of the Conservation Unit of the Terra Ronca State Park was the great motivator of several conflicts, which could be noticed in issues related to the land. The Unit did not consider the reconciliation between the human occupation and the environmental preservation, provoking a strong feeling of rejection, insecurity and dissatisfaction among landowners in the area. This social-environmental conflict provoked serious reflexes on the maintenance and preservation of the cultural aspects, in particular, on the preservation of their myths, legends and traditions.

Abstract:
This work proposes a reading of the fictional work of José Veríssimo (1857-1916) and the Inglês de Sousa (1853-1918), specifically from the books Scenes of Amazonian Life (1886) and Amazonian Tales (1893) fiction of the Lower Amazon. We understand that the travel account made up of foreign expeditionary brought an aesthetic and discursive loan to the Amazonian narrative, such as the reports produced by scientists, through which civilization and barbarism was linked, the rediscovery of the Amazonian landscape and its legends. In addition to a more general analysis of these narratives, tracing correlation points with the travel account, for the Amazonian Life Scenes was determinant the study of the Amazon Magazine (1883-1884), in which the correlation between fiction and non-fiction can be verified , literature and history, myth and science walking side by side, resulting in the formal characteristics of \"The crime of tapuio\", for Amazonian Tales was illuminating some text of its reception, in the measure that a criticism was verified more favorable to the narratives declared historical , leaving in the background the narratives linked to the popular imagination, as was denied \"The cattle of Good damn it\", although, as other texts in Amazonian Tales reached a more refined form of the genre.

Full text
Abstract:
By focusing the reflection on the double question of literary posture and auctorial figure, the point will be to analyse how Marguerite Duras has succeeded, consciously or unconsciously, in betraying her readers, inventing her fate and setting herself up as an author, putting aside the question of autobiography and fiction, issues that have been treated so many times, and have often been overused. Questions on Duras converge towards the idea of the writer who builds her image, even beyond her death, from the thick fog she creates. It is also at the very heart of this “lie” one can find one of the author’s most secret manipulations, conscious or unconscious, that enables, with the help of her readers, the erection of her myth. When she became “La Duras”, at the end of a long process of creation, of memory, of game, of alienation, of dissociations, her everyday writing gave birth to her legend, knitting and unknitting it.Marguerite Duras is therefore a textbook case for whoever is interested in the way a writer builds her own public image, inspiring the reception of her work, and comforting its legitimation by critics and public. How did the little Marguerite Donnadieu become “La Duras”, and then finally “M. D.”? How did a writer, constantly evolving, manage to transform herself so as to enter History with her own story, even if she had to create it thoroughly? These questions are ever-present in Duras, who is also encouraging her reader to question the way a writer takes great care with her image, even selling “her soul”. Subsequently it would be interesting to analyse the way she played with the media, all the while mocking them. A legendary monster created by the media but freed by the “autobiographical” voice when “L’Amant” was published in 1984, she definitely forged herself a new identity by claiming to be the “High Priestess” of the novel thanks to a perpetual movement between real life and fantasized life

Toulouse 2, 1987. http://www.theses.fr/1988TOU20001.

Abstract:
This study offers a vast perspective on the various manifestations of the imagination at the time of the discovery and conquest of America. The dates 1492 - 1542 correspond approximately to the first half of the 16th century but are in no wise intended to be restrictive, especially as concerns myths. The work focuses, nevertheless, on this period of 50 years which is extremely rich in examples of the influence of the imagination on European expansionism. The whole of the American continent is studied, for the first explorers came from all the countries of Europe and ventured from Canada to Patagonia. The work provides an account of the initial cultural interchanges between American indians and European explorers which show clearly through a detailed analysis of the myths and legends of the time. The central feature is an examination of the geographical, historical and social data which may contribute to a better understanding of the role and influence of the imagination in the history of the time. The aim of this work is to lay down the basis for a study of attitudes and behaviour at the end of the 15th century and beginning of the 16th within the specific framework of the new world

Abstract:
The story of Gilgamesh has been viewed as an example of several different narrative genres. This thesis establishes how scholarship in English published between 1872 and 1967 has described Gilgamesh as a myth, or denied Gilgamesh status as a myth and discusses new the meanings that the context of myth brings to the story. Klein, Marie Bastienne. "Dancing with the hangman : symbol, myth and ritual in the medieval German legend, the Schelmensage." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8050.

Full text
Abstract:
Dancing with the hangman is an investigation into the medieval German legend known as the Schelmensage, which has its location in Bergen-Enkheim in Frankfurt, Germany - the town where I was born. It is a legend that concerns the manner in which a hangman became knighted by the emperor Barbarossa. I received the legend from my mother. My initial research question was to find out why the legend was being told for over a period of 900 years. The thesis investigation reveals the legend to be a German trickster myth, achieving this analysis using various theories to define it as myth. The work of Paul Ricoeur on mimesis, is cast in an arc of the prefigured world of action, the act of configuration and the ability of a person to reconfigure a situation or a life, which is applied so as to understand the structures which underlie the legend's meaning. Regarding the word Schelm as the symbolic core of this legend the thesis analyses this symbolism through its etymology, a structural analysis of its five different versions and its ritual performance in the play, Der Schelm von Bergen. The thesis considers the impact of being personally involved with the subject matter. The analysis is woven with personal episodes and this is defended as a reflexive methodolgy.

Abstract:
Napoleon’s personality and the results of his reign have always been a source of discussion both in France and elsewhere, nor is Russia an exception to this rule. The corpus of poems and writings on Napoleon attracted my attention: what were the causes of the birth of the Napoleonic myth in Russia, and how did attitudes towards the French emperor change over time? Analysis not only of works by Russian historians written after Napoleon’s death up to the beginning of the 20th century, but also of literary works from the same period, reveals changes in the image of the Emperor. The black legend lasted for only a brief time, and after his death Napoleon became a hero for poets. And historians looked positively on the emperor as they attempted to explain the events that had taken place in Europe at the beginning of the century. The transfer of Napoleon’s mortal remains back to France in 1840 marks the apogee of the golden legend. In Russia, this legend began to wane after the death of Lermontov and especially after the publication of Tolstoy’s War and Peace. At the beginning of the 20th century, whilst the Napoleonic myth no longer excited Russian poets, historians on the other hand grew more and more interested in imperial period, Franco-Russian relations, and Napoleon’s internal policy. The Franco-Russian alliance and the centenary of the Campaign of 1812 influenced historical studies positively, but the events occurring in Russia after 1917 gave the legend another dimension and other meanings

Varley, David Hugh. "The whirling wheel : the male construction of empowered female identities in Old Norse myth and legend." Thesis, Durham University, 2015. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11057/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the body of medieval literature associated with Old Norse myth and legend. Though this is a diffuse corpus produced over a long span of time and from a wide geographical area, it is possible to establish connections between texts and to highlight certain recurring narrative patterns that are deeply entrenched in this literary tradition. The specific focus of the present study is to analyse the narrative patterns that characterise the interactions between male and female figures. It has long been understood that female figures tend to occupy carefully defined social roles in this body of literature, and much work has been done in assessing these. This thesis takes the unique approach of investigating whether these roles can be viewed, not as a product of the mentality of the writers of this literary material, but rather as a product of male characters within the literary narratives themselves. The investigation poses the question of whether men can be seen, through their words, thoughts, and actions, to be responsible for creating female identities. Intimately connected to the concept of identity creation is the idea of power: this thesis will argue that most male attempts to redefine female identity is motivated by a desire to acquire, control, negate, or otherwise alter, the powers possessed by females. Quite often, because fallible males demonstrate an imperfect understanding of female power, there can be a marked disparity between the abilities certain women are thought to possess, and those they actually do. The thesis will examine a large selection of supernatural female figures, across a broad range of literature, ultimately to suggest that the male creation of female power is deeply entrenched in narrative patterns observable in many different contexts.

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to examine Scottishness in the television series Outlander, to see if it has the potential to contribute with national identities, despite being a large-scale American production which tends to present stereotypical representations. The depiction is of the Scottish Highlands in the 18th century when the Highland culture was diminished. Using a semiotic approach, I analyse visual signs and find key elements which are used to represent the Highland culture. The series is based on a romantic plot and has stereotypical elements in representing Scotland and its culture. However, I argue that despite the stereotypical representations, the ethnic group in question still can gain national emotion from the depiction. This, because of Scotland’s already romanticized history and heritage culture today. The study comes to the conclusion that a popular media representation, like Outlander, can have an impact on a nation’s identity and even politics, by reconstructing historical legends in a modern world and bringing forth a sense of belonging-ness in excess of the stereotypes accompanied.

Abstract:
Since before recorded history, werewolves have captivated human imagination. Simultaneously, they represent our deepest fears as well as our desire to connect with our primal ancestry. Today, werewolves are portrayed negatively, associated with violence, cruelty, cannibalism, and general malevolence. However, in ages past, legends depicted them not as monsters, but as a range of neutral to benevolent individuals, such as traveling companions, guardians, and knights. The robust legacy of the werewolf spans from prehistory, through ancient Greece and Rome, to the Middle Ages, into the Early Modern period, and finally into present-day popular culture. Over the ages, the view of the werewolf has become distorted. Media treatment of werewolves is associated with inferior writing, lacking in thought, depth, and meaning. Werewolves as characters or creatures are now generally seen as single-minded and one-dimensional, and they want nothing more than to kill, devour, and possibly violate humans. Hollywood depictions have resulted in the destruction of the true meanings behind werewolf legends that fascinated and terrified humans for so many ages. If these negative trends were reversed, perhaps entertainment might not only discover again some of the true meanings behind the werewolf myth, but also take the first steps toward reversing negative portrayals of wolves themselves, which humans have, for eons, wrongfully stigmatized and portrayed as evil, resulting in wolves receiving crueler treatment than virtually any other animal. To revive the many questions posed by lycanthropy, entertainment must show respect to the rich history of the legend — and rediscover the benevolent werewolf.

This research is registered in the outline of myths didactics in classes of French taught as a Foreign Language. It examins the different problems encountered while dealing with myths in classes of FFL in Tunisia. It in fact, goes round three big axes of research. The first axis is about the theoretical plan which is linked to the mythical categories and their stakes whereas the second axis consists in catching the eye on the privileged status of myths in Tunisian official programs. It renders an account of their exploitation in classes practices via a learning module in the third form programm. The third axis sets out the results of a research in progress so as to take out the representation that pupils make of a mythical literary text and the difficulties set against the reception of such genre of account. This research leads to a programm of studies and didactic propositions which role is to make yougesters aware of the importance of a literary text including a myth, act against their representations so as to help in protecting the universal cultural patrimony and the improving of the quality of the Tunisian academic system

Full text
Abstract:
My work on the thealogy of Mary conveys a largely subjective way of thinking, it does not claim to present the view of any group, and it does not profess a theoretical agenda for a cult or a religious movement of Mary. The framework of this work is grounded in symbolic (legends, fairy tales and images), psychological (the structure of the psyche according to Carl Gustav Jung: the Self, the conscious, the unconscious, the Shadow) and imaginative (individual interpretations of narratives and images) spheres that are combined with feminist spirituality theories, religious philosophy and literary analysis. In my thesis, I offer a non-Christian myth of Mary which I form out of the folklore narratives about Mary. In my work, Mary is understood as the female divine archetype on the collective level, and as an expression of the Self on the individual level. Following Jung’s theory, the archetypes are forms and not contents, that is, an archetype can be comparable to an empty shell, which we fill with our own experience or with narratives that are meaningful to us. I take the image of Mary out of the Roman Catholic context and give it a new mythological narrative. This means to me a possibility not only to acquire a non-Christian myth of Mary but also to develop an individual relationship with the divine in its female personification. On the collective level, the thealogy of Mary creates a spiritual and psychological sphere in which the female divine has a possibility to outweigh the one-sidedness of the past few thousand years of the male predominance in the religious philosophy in the West.

Abstract:
This dissertation concerns the reception of the myth of Alexander the Great in Italian art during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In particular, I discuss the turning-point in the tradition which took place in Renaissance Italy around the middle of the fifteenth century: the transition from the medieval imagery of Alexander as a legendary, almost fairy-tale, figure to the historical portrait of him as an exemplum of moral virtue and military prowess. On the basis of the corpus known as the Alexander Romance, during the Middle Ages Alexander was depicted as a fabled explorer and knight, whose marvellous adventures enjoyed huge popularity both in the literary tradition and in the visual arts. Around the mid-fifteenth century, with the changing cultural atmosphere associated with the rise of humanism, this medieval conception was superseded by a different image of Alexander, drawing on the newly discovered ancient historical accounts of Plutarch, Curtius Rufus, Arrian and Diodorus Siculus. There are five chapters, all illustrated, plus an introduction and conclusion. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the literary and iconographic tradition of Alexander in Italy from 1100 to 1400, exploring the most popular episodes from the legend. In Chapter 2, I present examples of the persistence of the legendary tradition in the Quattrocento (especially, some fresco cycles of the Nine Worthies). Chapter 3 is concerned with the humanist recovery of ancient sources and its impact on the received view of Alexander; the important contribution of Petrarch and Boccaccio is also examined. Chapter 4 deals with the emergence of a new Renaissance portrait of Alexander around 1450, notably in paintings on marriage chests. In Chapter 5 I discuss the development of this new image of Alexander in the sixteenth century, with the establishment of an iconographic repertoire, centring on novel episodes taken from ancient historical sources.

The thesis proposes detect by analyzing compositions of five so-called "Amazon Legends Series" by Waldemar Henrique Pará, and the novel "Orphans of Eldorado", the Amazon Milton Hatoum, the marks of mythic narratives in shaping regional identity. The Amazonian mythic narratives are based on imaginary hillbilly rich and fantastical episodes, which now serve as the theme over the years, for inspiration and poetic literary constructions. Authors like Waldemar Hatoum and stand out, such as promoters and imaginary in his works reveal the values, beliefs, experiences and behaviors experienced by his characters in the Amazon region. A collection of (poetry) songs of poet and composer Waldemar Henrique translates through mythic narratives sung, the riverine life full of language itself in the Amazon region and indigenous traditions, enriched content about seduction, charm forest, private wealth, religiosity; respect for beings of the forest. The poet seems to perpetuate the Amazonian culture through art spoken and sung. In Hatoum, narratives of native people reveal a space full of conflict, establishing his characters search for a perfect place, the lost Eden in the early times and continually sought by man. Waldemar and Hatoum show that the myths and legends, even if understood as a product of the imagination, in fact interfere with those who believe in them and mark the characterization of identity Amazon. The adopted methodological resources are divided into literature, documentary and analysis tools (and narrative compositions) of the authors in question. To achieve the objectives, the research develops a descriptive way, which shows that Waldemar and Hatoum, record that the Amazon myths still flourish robust, contributing to a polyphony of voices heard in the region, disclosing a place of vast imaginary dimensions, whose inventory accounts, will never be closed

This work proposes a study of the sebastianist legend as mythical matter in Romance d A pedra do Reino (RPR). We assume, supported by Northrop Frye, Carl Jung, Mircea Eliade, Joseph Campbell and Gilbert Durand the perspective in which the myth remains but restore itself infinitely by images and archetypical symbolism. First, we reach to rebuild the conforming cultural essence of the fictional s sebastianist legends of Portugal and Brasil identifying its archetypical components. Thus, we look for sebastianist messianic references, for its thesis and discourse, in the plurilinguistic design of RPR, considering its relevance in the mythical discourse s configuration of the narrative. We notice a forceful tension between apocalyptical and demoniac images, resulting from narrator-protagonist idealistic view and his involvement in realistic world incongruence, pointing myth s dislocations and ironic manner predominance in the narrative. Besides the external and unconcluded character s contest, connected to the judicial process and to the production of his Obra de Gênio da Raça (Genius Lineage/Race Work), foundation stone to his sebastianist messianic kingdom of the Fifth Empire, we distinguish some inner demand linked to his way to maturity which doesn t consolidate effectively. The character s project and their temporary dismissal state plus his expectation of its accomplishment in a not far future constitutes the most important sebastianist messianic bias in the production, strengthened by other thematic recurrences in the Pedra Bonita s sebastianist legend, and make possible still the establishment of a more fertile analogy to the Portuguese manifestation. These different fronts of myth s restoration grant universality and absence of temporality to RPR.

The analysis exercise concerning the novel Mantrinchã do Teles Pires tends to emerge the literary aspects which constitute in the thematic construction of the myth research, in the legend recreation of the prophet João Maria and in the re-reading of historical happenings. The reading course and the sense production go through the three main elements: the mythical, the legendary and the historical, analysing them to recognize, in its interior, the coherence in the aesthetic set of procedures that assure it the fiction character. The mythical aspect retakes, in a parody way, the plot of Exodus Book and manifests in the crossing of thousands of Brazilians who left their lands and tradition to go through their dream: the promised land. The prophet legend reconstructs from versions that extend in several spaces, from Sorocaba, São Paulo, passing by Contestado conflict and recreating itself in Eleutério, the main character of the book. A hiker who assumes the messianic character after his historical idol death, Getúlio Vargas, and doubles the first monk action in the lands of Mato Grosso. The historical factor presence in the narrative fixes itself in the rescue of Vargas Era and of national expansion projects which will trigger off the migratory movement to the North of the state of Mato Grosso. For the study development of these points in the structure composition we will use specific theories and bibliographies. Afterwards, we will consider the narrative basis to the narrator constitution, the main point of this research, which works as the catalyst element between the other categories like time, space, plot and characters. All these fragments are cemented on the fictional mosaic by subtle irony and by plurality of voices which give to the work a post-modern profile.

Abstract:
In our paper, we suggest two planes of the examination of Marguerite Yourcenar’s major novels: on the one hand, her novels are seen as a form of a narrative indistinguishably associated with a mythic vision of the world; on the other hand, they are seen as the writing of the self, utterly defined by the concepts based on Buddhism that denounce the illusion of ‘’I’’ and substantially leave out the notion of identity. Having stated this, we endeavor to show that the autobiographical writing of the author in question becomes greatly problematized as it is being misinterpreted as a heterobiographic piece of writing. We have also tried to clear out some uncertainties about themes and narrative procedures which are the basis of generic fluctuations of Marguerite Yourcenar’s novels

Abstract:
Masters of Art
study analyses the concept of al-Karāmah al-Sūfīyah (the Sufi Saintly Miracle) in both its religious and literary dimensions. The researcher will shed more light on this genre of narrative literary phenomena by developing its definition and placing it in the social and historical context of the Sufi thought as a whole. Many communities in the Islamic world embrace and practice the Sufi doctrine and also believe in the Ṣūfī Sheikhs’ saintly miracles and its paranormal aspects, which they also consider to be parallel in its sacredness to the miracles of the Prophets. Furthermore, in this study the researcher will not only focus on the religious significance of the saintly miracle but also on their literary approach and aesthetic dimensions. In fact many of the contemporary Arab scholars and Litterateurs categorize this narrative discourse to fall under the cloak of al-Adab al-‘ajāibī (miraculous literature) due to the nature of its narrative style and structure from which it achieves its goals, such as: Myth – Legend – Superstition – Storytelling, etc. The study will be mainly qualitative. It is a content analysis study in the sense that the researcher will analyse the stylistic, formal and rhetorical techniques of the saintly miracles’ discourse with specific reference to extracts taken from al- Sheikh al-Hassan al- Shadili and al-Sheikh Abdelssalam Bin Machich. The study will use an eclectic theoretical and conceptual framework which combines the historical approach with the reception theory.

Ellinger, Pierre. Paris, EHESS, 1988. http://www.theses.fr/1988EHES0014.

Abstract:
Starting from the phokian national legend which consists in a cycle of tales reporting the wars of independence of the phokians against the thessalians in the archaic age, celebrated at the phokian federal sanctuary of artemis elaphebolos in hyampolis, it is shown that the greeks of the archaic and classical periods developped a complex and systematic thinking about exceptions to their own rules of hoplitic war. When wars of annihilation threatened the very existence of peoples and cities, artemis was called to instil the boldness and the courage to face the greatest risks, to inspire the devices to win these wars which transgress every admitted limit and to make civilization triumph where it seemed doomed to sink into wildness. The pondering of the greeks about the extreme forms of war is to be placed in the larger frame of a consideration on "extreme situations" by which the city, opposing the extreme radicalism of mystic trends like orphism which branded her as the absolute evil, endeavoured to explore and draw the limits of human condition at a distance of both the worst and the impossible best. Thus conceived, this whole work is intended as a contribution to the study of the relations between myth and history
