Abstract:
Regional library local history is a comprehensive library activity requiring special professional training. The author reveals the issue of teaching library local history at library higher schools; searched educational publications on local history in the electronic catalogues of libraries and bibliographic indices. It was revealed 48 academic publications on library local history for 1930-2014. The study objective is to trace the evolution of educational publications on the problems of teaching librarian local history in a library higher school. It was presented the analysis of textbooks on the following features: types of educational publications, authors, scientific schools and content. The study revealed expanding diversity of educational publications on library local history, from single programs, lectures to textbooks, educational-methodical complexes and electronic textbooks. At the same time, it was found out a lack of new integrated textbooks, «fragmentation» in teaching and representing certain aspects of local librarian history in educational work, insufficient number of electronic textbooks and absence of interactive electronic educational materials for universities. The fundamentals of teaching local librarian history were started by two scientific schools in St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture and Moscow State Institute of Culture. The formation of the library local history as an educational course is associated with the name of N. V. Zdobnov. The largest contribution to the development of educational-methodological support for library local history was made by A. V. Mamontov and N. N. Shcherba. The substantive aspect of educational-methodological support for library local history can be divided into three stages. The first stage (1930-1970) is related to the study of local history bibliography only. The second period (1980-1990) is characterized by creating a number of editions covering general problems of regional studies of library local history and library activities on local history study. In 1990s preconditions appeared to expand study of various aspects of library local history. IIt was connected with changes in the state policy of regional development, as well as a growing interest in regional/local history information. The third stage (2000-2010s) of the evolution of educational publications is related, on the one hand, to a more expanded study of some specific aspects of library local librarian (bibliographic processing of local history documents, local history fund or management of local history activities, etc.), on the other hand, to a complex representation of regional studies in cooperation of libraries, archives, museums and other institutions dealing with issues of local history in the region.

Abstract:
The present study aims to identify the infrastructure conditions presented in state public schools in the municipality of Marília to receive the implementation of the High School Reform (EM), Law N. 13415/2017, Evidencing the important of evaluation beyond the standardized tests, with discussions about the contextual factors of schools that need to be considered in the search for quality. The research was developed in a documentary and bibliographic nature, with the support of the PIBIC scholarship UNESP´s Rectoty. As a result, we identified that although the regulations of the Reform contemplate the need to improve the infrastructure, its implementation, which began in 2021, is taking place with the existing structural conditions. According to the infrastructure scale proposed by Soares et al. (2013) organized into four levels of classification, we found that all 18 schools that offer the EM in this municipality are classified as basic infrastructure for their operation. Only five schools have a Science Laboratory, two schools have a Library and the other Reading Rooms. We also highlight that seven of the 18 schools investigated were selected by the “Programa Escola + Bonita” (SÃO PAULO, 2019) because they have a greater need for investment in infrastructure. We emphasize that changing the curricular organization as the Reform of the EM proposes without the availability of objective working conditions is not enough for the advancement of quality, at the same time it does not provide a human and emancipatory training for young people. [In Russian]In his new book, Yury N. Stolyarov reconstructs the biography of Nikolay [Nikolas] Aleksandrovich Rubakin, the author of over 280 books and 300 articles. The monograph is based on the series of papers by Stolyarov published in professional periodicals. The author includes Rubakin’s biography beginning with his birth in the town of Oranienbaum (now (Lomonosov, Leningradskaya oblast, Russia) till his last days in Switzerland. Yu. Stolyarov portrays a person who had to emigrate, though his all life was wholeheartedly devoted to Russia. The author investigates into archival materials, publications by the scholar, his personal correspondence, which enabled Stolyarov to demonstrate political, social and cultural impacts on Rubakin’s life and vectors of his studies. In his book, Stolyarov emphasizes the scholar’s great contribution to the study of problems in library science and bibliology, i. e. the role of libraries in self-education, promotion of science knowledge among population groups, collection development, book selection for children, reading theory, etc. Yu. Stolyarov also focuses on bibliopsychology — an independent discipline, developed by N. Rubakin and won the support of the library community. The findings of bibliopsychology has been being still used globally.

Abstract:
This research is a response to challenges in school library management, including manual data management and the need for effective human resource management. The research method used is the Research and Development (R&D) method, which consists of several stages such as preliminary studies, development, and product determination. The purpose of this study was to produce an effective training design to improve the quality of web-based library management in Labuhanbatu Regency. The training was aimed at library heads, library staff, and prospective library heads in secondary schools in Labuhanbatu. The needs analysis stage involved interviews and questionnaires to training participants, which indicated the need for increased knowledge in the management of web-based library information systems. The development process included designing a training model, creating training modules, training materials, and web-based training media. The training combined practical and theoretical models, with simulations of the use of web-based library information systems. Evaluation was conducted through performance tests and validation by experts. The evaluation results showed that the training design was rated as excellent by the experts, with an average score of 86.70% for the material and 89.30% for the media. The final product is considered internally valid and can be implemented. The scores from the questionnaire test of the trainees showed the success of the training with a percentage of 76.11%. Statistical tests showed that participants' knowledge increased significantly after the training. The N-Gain Score value of 62.68% indicates that the training model is quite effective.

Abstract:
In 1988, Information Power described skills and duties expected of a school library media specialist. These include familiarity with various forms of educational technology, interpersonal social and communication skills, and proficiency in a wide range of planning and management areas. Simultaneously, restructuring, a movement to site-based management, requires new types of skills of Florida's teachers. While the importance and complexity of the position of library media specialist has increased, there is concern that some practicing professionals do not have training or experience to address these new obligations. As a benchmark of current expertise in non-instructional duties, this research effort attempted to determine existent budgetary skills among public school library media specialists in the state of Florida. The purpose of this research effort was to develop a tool to survey practicing public school library media specialists in Florida and then apply that tool to determine the validity of stated hypotheses concerning budgetary roles of those library media specialists.

Central Queensland University, 2007. http://library-resources.cqu.edu.au./thesis/adt-QCQU/public/adt-QCQU20070525.085011.

Abstract:
The notion of Queensland as a ‘Smart State’ is the Queensland Beattie Government’s response to global conditions that require a new type of worker and citizen for a new knowledge economy. The role of education in the success of the ‘Smart State’ is clearly outlined in the Queensland Government’s vision statements and policies, identifying teachers as a key factor in the production of this new type of worker and citizen. In this study I explore the relationship between Queensland’s Smart State policy and the daily practices of teachers as they are implicated in the building of a ‘Smart State’. The study takes place during what is unquestionably the largest and most comprehensive reform effort to be imposed on Queensland schools and teachers, under the auspices of a ‘Smart State’. The research includes policy analysis of two key Smart State documents, and fieldwork involving semi-structured interviews, observations and artefact collection of the work of two primary school teachers. Using Fairclough’s theories regarding the relationship between discourse and social change, it is possible to show how changes occurring in contemporary organisations are related to changes in discourse, in particular, those surrounding the discourses of a ‘knowledge economy’ or ‘globalisation’. The ‘Smart State’ is conceptualised in this study as regimes of discourses that may produce new practices and new ways of acting and being (Fairclough, 2001a). The interdiscursive, linguistic and semiotic strategies used in Smart State policy are analysed to show how this discourse is emerging into a hegemonic position, while identifying the dominant discourses reiterated in the policy as necessary skills for a new type of worker. These discourses are mapped onto those identified through the fieldwork of teachers’ daily work practices to determine if Smart State discourses are becoming apparent in teachers’ work. This study is significant because it makes visible the current relationship between the discourses of the ‘Smart State’ and teachers’ daily work. In this current climate of rapid change and economic survival it is important that the operationalization of a ‘Smart State’ can be attributed to teachers’ work as new ways of acting and interacting become a part of their daily practices.

Abstract:
Fewer than 8% of schools in South Africa have functioning libraries. There is no national policy for school libraries which compels School Governing Bodies and principals to have a library in their schools. This qualitative study, based on grounded theory, investigated ten primary schools in Gauteng that had libraries, or were in the process of setting up a library with the intention of providing a rich description of the issues and challenges facing these schools. The schools were chosen on the basis of location (Soweto and Johannesburg), and the school fees that were paid in a continuum from low/no fee paying schools to the fee paying ex Model-C schools. The resourcing of the school library, the operation of the school library and the role of the library were examined. The findings highlight the lack of a national policy, of school library posts, the theft of computers as a result of the lack of security, as well as the lack of understanding by teachers of the role the library in teaching and learning. Furthermore, there appears to be a disjuncture between the trends evident in the international literature on school libraries and what is actually happening in the primary school libraries in my study. Most significantly low/no fee paying schools with libraries were the exception and those that did have libraries were as a result of the enthusiasm and efforts of one or two individuals with the backing of the principal. Ex-Model C schools had the advantage in terms of the provision and staffing of school libraries as they had the funds to support them and, in some cases, a school librarian, provided that the principal supported the idea of a school library. In all the schools, the belief in the importance of the library regarding reading and literacy was the main motivating factor in establishing or maintaining the school library. A growing public awareness of the value of school libraries was an encouraging trend that emerged from my study.

Abstract:
This research was based on the situation of Brazilian school libraries; still scarce in the educational environment and when they exist are usually only a collection of book; an organized collection of information. The issue takes on more relevance with the creation of Brazilian federal law no 12.244/10 which mandates the creation of libraries in all national educational institutions and defines them solely as a collection of material. Therefore, efforts focused only on providing access to library materials are sufficient to fulfill the schools obligation under the law. In this context, the study recommends the development of public policy focused not only on the creation of school libraries but also, and crucially, on redefining them, ensuring that they will be focused not only on the right to access information, but also the right to know how to access and use it. Aiming to understand and define criteria for the implementation of public policy for school libraries, this qualitative research included a theoretical approach and also an exploratory study - through semi-structured interviews on the implementation of the municipal public policy carried out in São Bernardo do Campo (SP), which led to the creation of Rede Escolar de Bibliotecas Interativas, a network of libraries based on the concept of apropriação cultural (Portuguese term that means the construction of meaning for the use of the informational/cultural Center). As a result, the criteria to be considered in public policy aimed at the creation, redefinition and consolidation of school libraries in Brazil have been defined.

Abstract:
Libraries have been with us for almost as long as writing; their role, purpose and means of operation have changed greatly over the thousands of years of their existence. Technology simpliciter can be understood as humans at work. The way we work shapes the technologies we use just as technologies shape the way we work. That is, there is a mutual shaping or coconstruction of society and technology. This thesis is a study of libraries and the introduction of Internet technologies. Employing the notion of an open system that is, one which is undergoing constant change, has indeterminate boundaries and means of control, it examines from a sociotechnical viewpoint, informed by Actor-Network Theory, the way the mutual interaction between technologies, society and culture shape the evolution of the system. Data were collected in 1998-9 and 2005 utilizing techniques from both ethnographic and case study research, to capture and illustrate this fluidity. Three libraries in Melbourne, Australia, were objects of this exploratory study with both library staff and users being interviewed and observed as they engaged with Internet technologies as part of their working, studying, communicating or recreational lives. The thesis report seeks to make the reader aware, through a process of reflexive or confessional reporting, the interrelatedness of all the actors (including the researcher), both human and nonhuman, in the evolution and shaping of the system of Internet use in the organizations that were the objects of this study. The resulting study reveals uncertainty, resistance, accommodation, enthusiasm and even failure in the sociotechnical system and serves to illustrate the fallibility of theories that assume society and technology are essentially static categories -especially when applied at the micro level, as here.

Abstract:
This paper presents the current state of the open and collaborative Vessel.JS library, firstly introduced at the 2018 edition of IMDC. The new features of the library are discussed via available online examples. The core of the paper uses a newly developed web-based online ship simulator as guiding example, where the ship, sea and environment are constructed using the library and its dependencies. Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) research vessel Gunnerus is used as example for the ship and maneuverability model. The landscape is based on an open map from Trondheim municipality, joint by the library with the sea and sky. The bridge and control center uses the OpenBridge library for the instruments, a result from a recent cooperation between NTNU and Oslo School of Architecture (Oslo, Norway). The whole platform is available online and can be modified and improved by peers. A discussion is included in the last part of the paper about how recent studies in digital twin standards can be implemented in the mentioned example using web technologies. The paper concludes with a proposal for re-use of the available model and a call to open and collaborative development in maritime design.

Abstract:
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in K-12 schools is critical to inspire young students and prepare them for future college coursework and careers in science and engineering. An effective mechanism for creating and sustaining successful STEM education is to train well-qualified K-12 teachers with a positive attitude and deep knowledge skills in STEM fields. Supported by the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Teachers program (NSF RET), the RET Site at Michigan State University (MSU) aims to build a multidisciplinary engineering research program for middle and high school teachers and their students, within a coherent theme of “Smart Sensors and Sensing Systems”. This paper presents an introduction to the MSU’s Site program and highlights the learning outcomes and achievements of the RET participants. The MSU Site has four main components including authentic research experience for teachers during an intensive summer program; curriculum development by integrating engineering design units into teachers’ courses; professional skill development through seminars, facility tours, and field trips; and finally classroom implementation of the developed curricula. Throughout the 6-week summer program, teacher participants were given the opportunity to work closely with graduate students and engineering professors on current research projects in university laboratories. The teachers’ research activities culminated with a final poster report and oral presentation during a symposium at the end of the summer program. Follow-up classroom visits helped to build a strong connection between local middle/high schools and MSU to smooth students’ transitions to college. Since 2016, the Site has graduated 21 middle and high school teachers from the greater Lansing-Detroit area that serve large populations of minority and female students. These RET teachers have produced over 24 sets of curriculum plans and classroom activities, 3 sets of which have been published by an online digital library, TeachEngineering.org (TE), and 8 sets of which have been accepted by TE. Finally, from the findings of the RET Site, the paper discusses best practices and recommendations for incorporating teachers into a university laboratory setting.

Abstract:
The article analyzes individual-typological profiles of conscious selfregulation of learning activity in three age periods: 5–6 grades; 7–8 grades; 9–11 grades. An introduction gives a brief description of the current state of typological approach and its application in Russian and foreign psychology. The relevance and novelty of the presented research is justified. The results of the analysis of individual-typological profiles of conscious self-regulation in middle and high school students are presented. We analyzed the frequency of occurrence of harmonious and accentuated profiles in students of three age periods (N = 943) with different development of conscious self-regulation of learning activity. We found a differentiation of the regulatory system from middle to high school, as evidenced by the appearance of structurally new profiles in each subsequent age period and an increase in their variability. At the same time the results showed a significant but small decrease in the average level of conscious self-regulation of learning activity across the samples. Apparently, it is due to a more normative behavior and attitude to educational activities in grades 5–6, as well as the predominant use of regulatory resources for personal self-determination in middle adolescents and for solving problems of professional self-determination in the final grades.

Abstract:
The authors generalize the benefits of ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), i.e. the higher performance in processing big data arrays, generation of personalized and relevant recommendations, reduced costs for essential resources. At the same time, the widespread concerns about promotion of ChatGPT are discussed, e.g. human views manipulations, misinformation, decrease of employment in several sectors of economy, and weakening human communications. The authors emphasize that the professionals are concerned about the negative consequences and potential ChatGPT misuse; they suggest how to prevent negative outcomes, in particular, to introduce government control of AI-systems development and application. Garcia-Ramirez, Grisel, and Sabrina Islam. "Patterns of marijuana use and sexual violence among sexual minority high school students: Perspectives from the California Healthy Kids Survey." In 2021 Virtual Scientific Meeting of the Research Society on Marijuana. Research Society on Marijuana, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.26828/cannabis.2022.01.000.50.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Sexual minority students are at risk for adverse outcomes associated with substance use and violence. The vast majority of research literature, however, has focused on university students and alcohol consumption. There is an increased need to understand the distinct vulnerabilities of youth who have a non-heterosexual sexual orientation, and marijuana use as more state legalize and normalize the recreational use of marijuana in various forms. This study examines marijuana use and sexual victimization among high school students by sexual minority status. Methods: We analyzed data from 9th (n=50,973) and 11th (n=41,692) graders who participated in the California Healthy Kids Survey during the 2018-2019 school year. Students were asked to report their sexual identity and orientation (‘straight,’ ‘gay/lesbian,’ ‘bisexual,’ ‘something else,’ ‘I am not sure yet’, ‘decline to respond’), whether they had ever been sexually assaulted, marijuana use in their lifetime and past 30 days, and demographic characteristics. We conducted multi-level logistic regression analysis to assess relationships between lifetime and past-30-day marijuana use, sexual minority status and sexual victimization (SV). Analyses were performed using Stata, version 15.1. Results: The initial model indicated that the interaction terms for sexual minority status and sexual assault were not significantly associated with lifetime and past 30-day marijuana use. Analyses without the interaction terms suggest that students who identify as gay or lesbian, and who selected ‘I am not sure yet’ and ‘something else’ had higher odds of reporting past-30-day marijuana use than their ‘straight’ peers (OR=1.50 p<0.01 95%CI: 1.15, 1.96; OR=1.34 p<0.01 95%CI: 1.20, 1.50; OR=2.33 p<0.01 95%CI: 2.11, 2.59). Results also suggested that students who identified as gay or lesbian, bisexual, and students who selected ‘something else’ as their sexual orientation had higher odds to report lifetime marijuana use than their ‘straight’ peers (OR=1.90 p<0.01 95%CI: 1.43, 2.52; OR=1.45 p<0.05 95%CI: 1.03, 2.04; OR=1.57 p<0.01 95%CI: 1.29, 1.92). However, students who declined to respond about their sexuality are less likely to report lifetime marijuana use than their ‘straight’ peers (OR=0.82 p<0.05 95%CI: .68, .99) Additionally, students who reported sexual assault have almost six times higher odds of reporting lifetime and past-30-day and lifetime marijuana use (OR=6.68 p<0.01 95%CI: 3.99, 11.20; OR=6.03 p<0.01 95%CI: 3.80, 9.56). Overall, students who are in 11th grade, are male, and Hispanic have higher odds of reporting marijuana use. Conclusion: Overall, risks of marijuana use tend to be more pronounced among sexual minority students who have experienced sexual violence. Our findings suggest that students who identified as ‘something else’ may be at particular risk. These results are congruent with prior research on college populations that have identified undergraduate students who are bisexual and unsure of their sexual identity at heightened risk for SA. Greater efforts are needed to examine the intersection of substance use and sexual victimization and the disproportionate burden facing adolescents across multiple categories of sexual orientation.

Davis, Jerry, Ruoliang Tang, Rich Sesek, and Sean Gallagher. "Evaluating Firefighter Crawling Performance in a Controlled Environment." In Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics Conference. AHFE International, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.54941/ahfe100143.

Full text
Abstract:
State mandated firefighter training is both highly structured and physically challenging. Firefighting is typically performed in harsh environments, necessitating personal protective equipment (PPE) which adds weight, restricts mobility, and decreases metabolic heat removal. For the most part, firefighter training is highly controlled and repetitive in nature, with each trainee performing required training exercises numerous times under close supervision. One such skill involves crawling, which is a physically intensive activity that firefighters utilize during training exercises, indoor fire suppression, and search and rescue activities. The ability to have firefighters crawl nearly identical, closely observed, routes is not easily accomplished for many fire departments. This pilot study observed trainees participating in a fire department training school using a unique crawling apparatus in their curriculum. Young, healthy male firefighter trainees (N=10) participated in a crawling exercise conducted in a modified commercial semi-trailer that was configured with varying crawling paths and fitted with infra-red cameras. Trainees crawled in full turnout gear while wearing forced air respirators to complete the course. Dependent variables included heart rate, compressed air usage, and time to complete the course. Incorporating such observations and measures into firefighting training curriculums has the potential to provide instantaneous feedback to trainees on their performance, potential areas of improvement, and facilitates the comparison of their physiological performance to the demands of the crawling task.

Abstract:
Inspirations refers to an evoked state of creativity, which implies motivation, evocation, and transcendence. Traditionally in the literature inspiration is divided to two states such as being inspired by or inspired to. Inspiration is influenced by information and knowledge, nevertheless several studies indicate a positive association between academic major and inspiration occurrence frequency. Previous study results indicate that domain specific knowledge such as visual art has a major impact on visual stimuli processing, reasoning, and evaluation. Although inspiration is claimed to be a fundamental phenomenon on the artistic creativity, its psychological importance has been often neglected. In the current study we investigated the influence of visual art expertise on inspiration frequency, using the Vienna Art Interest and Art Knowledge Questionnaire (VAIAK) and Inspiration Scale (IS). We specified art expertise on the dimensions of art interest and art knowledge. Participants with different art experiences have been gathered (N = 77) and were distributed into three separate groups by their visual art experience acquisition (art experience in higher education, art experience in high school, and self-taught artists). Our main results indicate a significant effect of art knowledge on inspiration frequency, indicating that participants with higher art knowledge scores experience inspiration frequently compared to participants with scores under average. Neither art experience acquisition nor art interest have been found to have a significant effect on inspiration frequency. Our result show evidence for a significant interaction effect between art interest and art knowledge on inspiration frequency. Our results are in line with results from previous studies regarding art knowledge and inspiration state experience frequencies. Although inspiration frequency might be determined by art knowledge, we can conclude that art experience acquisition does not influence inspiration frequency.
