Abstract:
In recent years, the Palestinian city of Nablus has experienced great suffering due to attacks by the Israeli forces. Strict curfews imposed on the city did not only affect daily life and lead to deteriorating economic conditions, but also had an impact on the psychological well-being of the inhabitants. The peak of the violence was in 2002 when Israeli forces occupied Nablus city and ordered a curfew for three months. The suffering that people faced during this period took on different dimensions - most notably immobility - as a result of the continuous siege and the constant threat of being shot at when breaking the curfew. This article will be examining the ways in which religious belief contributed to creating resilience which had a major influence on the inhabitants’ steadfastness (ṡumud) during the siege and its aftermath.

Abstract:
New evidence, culled from the Nablus advisory council (majlis al-shūrā) records and based on an actual Ottoman population count taken in December 1849, indicates that the city's population at that time numbered at least 20,000 people, more than twice the frequently cited figure of 8,000–9,000. This revision raises serious doubts about the veracity of hitherto commonly accepted population figures, most of them based on contemporary estimates by Western observers, for the various regions of Palestine during the first three-quarters of the 19th century. Moreover, when compared to available data for Nablus from the 16th and the late 19th centuries, it seems that the pattern of Nablus's demographic development differs from what the proponents of Ottoman decline and modernization theses have argued.2 Instead of decreasing during the so-called dark ages of Ottoman decline in the 17th and 18th centuries, Nablus's population increased significantly; and instead of growing robustly during the so-called period of modernization in the second half of the 19th century, it appears to have leveled off.

Abstract:
The Nablus Collection is a previously-unpublished hoard of imperial Roman bronze coins from the Tetrarchic Period (294-318) housed at the Catholic University of America. The Collection is comparable to many other, similar hoards and confirms common trends such as weight, time span, and inflation during the period. One programmatic weight reduction, in the year 307/308, is well documented in the Collection, and the hoard further substantiates a lesser-known weight reduction in the year 312 for which no material evidence had as yet been discovered. The Collection, however, differs from other hoards in several remarkable ways, raising questions that require creative hypotheses. The mint distribution supported by comparable hoards of the period contrasts strikingly with that of the Collection, which evidences a balance of eastern and western mints peculiar for the period. The hoard testifies to the economic rise of a frontier colony which by the 320s had become an established community with its own bishop and the importance to attract a flow of foreign coin from across the Empire. The Collection adds a small piece to the story of that turbulent period when Constantine marched from York, crossed the Empire, and finally settled in the East.

Abstract:
The anthropology of ethics is a project of developing a common language in order to describe and to analyse ethical tensions as they manifest themselves across different traditions as well as changing social and historical contexts. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in the Palestinian city of Nablus in the West Bank, this thesis contributes to the anthropology of ethics with an analysis the virtuous spending of wealth - with a particular focus on zakat (Islamic almsgiving) - as it emerges through the Islamic discursive tradition. This stirs up wider issues, such as the trajectory of an ethical tradition in a politically repressive context. Historically, Nablus has been subject to different instances of foreign rule. Since 1967, the city has been under Israeli military occupation. This thesis shows how social interactions constitute a field of ethical practice. References to the Islamic Scriptures surfacing in greetings, conversations, and transactions in Nablus can be read as invoking an Islamic system of value. Acts of generous giving are sometimes inserted into this system, which unfolds in the context of the political economy of Israeli occupation. In this wider landscape, zakat in Nablus emerges both as (1) a socially embodied virtue realized within and through social relations; and as (2) an institutionalized practice carried out by zakat institutions, which since the 1970s have mainly evolved in a legal framework defined by state of Jordan. Analysing zakat on these two levels, this thesis grants insights into how military occupation, modern state administration, and capitalism fragment and inflect the Islamic discursive tradition, e.g. by foregrounding certain aspects of the Scriptures over others. With a view to embodied practices of zakat and ethical interactions, Islamic discourse manifests a certain plasticity and continuity. Conceiving wealth and scarcity as inherently ethical problems rooted in social interactions, the Islamic tradition notably provides a conceptual language of wider relevance.

Abstract:
The Palestinian territories have been under foreign military occupation since 1967 and this research is set to examine the implication that this situation has had on the built environment in the historic city of Nablus. Nablus like many other towns and villages in the occupied West Bank has been subject to strict planning policies and regulations controlling development. These policies and regulations restricted its ability to improve its built environment, modernise and expand its service networks, roads and infrastructure, and to accommodate the additional needs arising from the pressure for growth and increase in its population. The purpose of the study therefore, is to examine the built environment in Nablus and identify the indicators for its decline particularly in the city centre. It also aims to establish the main factors that have contributed to the deterioration of its physical condition and the major obstacles to its development. The difficult political conditions and frequent military clashes have had an adverse effect on the built environment and prospects for development. The study findings show that the Israeli occupation authorities have imposed major changes on the institutional structures and legislation that prevailed on the eve of the occupation. The Israeli administration of the occupied Palestinian territories was characterised by the centralisation of power, weakening of local authorities and absence of any form of Palestinian participation in decisions related to development. The study concludes that the planning and regulatory policies imposed by the Israeli Administration during the occupation of Palestine have been a major cause of the deterioration in the built environment in Nablus and suggests that it has had a similar impact on other towns in occupied Palestine.

Abstract:
Among the various aspects of religious studies, the one chosen here can be understood in its function of enabling man to express the meaning to life, founded on a logical system in which a new worldview is constructed to legitimize a determined human reality. This dissertation aims, therefore, to understand the social function of a biblical text as an expression of reality; it aims to understand the type of society behind the text, as well as the historical subject responsible its production. The paper seeks to discover how this historical subject reworked its own traditions before a pluralistic and competing symbolic world, and, finally, how a religious basis to express their vision of society was developed. From this perspective, chapter 24,1-28 of the book of Joshua will be used for the analysis of the society and the praxis of the historical subject which produced their traditions. We have tried to understand the mode of social organization of the people during the post-exilic period of the Persian Empire. By way of theoretical orientation for text analysis, the sociological method for understanding the narrative of Js from 24.1 to 28 was chosen to illustrate the theological necessary to establish the cohesion of popular traditions, and to give new meaning to Yahwist religion in face of the diverse cultures of the religious world of that time. This was possible through the realization of a covenant. The covenant made between Yahweh and the various groups, both those who remained in Judah and those who went into exile, was understood as a proposal to legitimize a new project that would ensure justice and the rights of those families of remainders excluded by the exiles, who were defenders of the social organization implanted in Canaan by the Persian administration. This social organization, created in the interest of the Persian Empire, was consisted of villages, also called father houses, were treated as corporate units. With the arrival of the exiled, this social organization of the province of Judah favored the restoration of the temple and worship, as an expression of the political will of the Persian administration.

Abstract:
This research aims to discuss the relevance of religious education in public schools and secular Brazil. At first develops an analysis of the historical-critical trajectory and evolution of religious education in public schools in the country, highlighting especially the relationship Church and State, National Legislation and lines underlying the pedagogical process. In the second chapter we work with João Décio Passos e Afonso Soares, we suggest three models of Religious Education present in Brazil, the Catechism, the Theological and Religious Studies, which examines the proposal to adopt the model of the Sciences of Religion as the best option to sustain pedagogical and epistemological autonomy of religious education in public schools in the country today. Finally, it is argued the need for a more comprehensive model for the study of religious phenomena through the transdisciplinary approach of Edgar Morin and Basarab Nicolescu, aimed at training the students a perspective of wholeness and citizenship, as expressed in Article 33 of LDB No. 9.394/96, with the new wording of Article 33.

Abstract:
The current process of growth of the city of Nablus has created many problems, both at subjective and objective levels. Subjective problems are associated with changes in people's attitudes caused by dramatic changes in the character and identity of the city, its cultural continuity and the social structure. Objective problems are associated with deterioration in the physical qualities of the built environment and the crisis of fragmentation in the structure of the city caused by an arbitrary pattern of development. As a result, one may relate these problems to a planning and decision making process which is not compatible with the specificity of the place and its indigenous culture. This thesis is concerned with tracing the origin of these problems and examines people's perception and preferences in order to form a framework, needed to guide the future development of the city and which responds to its people's needs and expectations. At the core of the study is an attempt to explore from people themselves a way of responding to these problems through understanding how they perceive and interpret the environment of their city. Another aim is to identify the area and the type of different interpretations and attitudes towards the environment held by both professionals and the ordinary people. This would provide a broader perspective from which we could gain more insight and information needed for future planning processes. The study has adopted a particular methodology needed for collecting and interpreting primary information. The city of Nablus was chosen as a case study and three techniques were used to gather and interpret data and responses. These techniques were an open - ended questionnaire, the Repertory Grid of George Kelley's Personal Construct Theory and finally Semantic Differential analysis. In addition to this the thesis comprises a literature review and interviews and also benefited from self-experience and observations of the city. Certain areas and notions of concern have been defined and observed through the main findings of the research. The notions of communication, participation, and conservation, for example, are the components engaged in the system of the city transformation, which is specific to its structure. On the other hand, cultural awareness was found to be the catalyst which enables these components to interact within this system and as a result allow people to be virtually and actively involved in their cultural processes.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This study explores the experience of adopting and implementing a Rights-Based Approach (RBA) to community practice in Palestine using a case study methodology. The studied case is a community-based organization that is university affiliated and voluntary efforts-oriented; the Community Service Center (CSC). CSC is affiliated to An-Najah National University, Nablus, Palestine and is a partner in the McGill Middle East Program in Civil Society and Peace Building (MMEP), Montreal, Canada. CSC works in a context that is characterized by political, social and economic instability and uncertainty. Community work in this context, as a method of social work, is expected to target its goals through addressing issues of social and political nature simultaneously; contribute to national aspirations of building a state after decades of occupation and working to realize human rights of the disadvantaged through their empowerment and participation. Human rights-based social work constituted the theoretical framework of the study. This framework is based on linking human rights and social work in a way consistent with the mission of social work as a profession that targets the barriers to accessing human rights; poverty, discrimination, and lack of education. Therefore, a human rights-based community practice should imply respect of human rights in its means and outcomes. Data about this experience was collected from three sources; CSC documents, a sample of persons who were involved in CSC work, and the researcher's own experience as a founding director of the organization. Data was collected using qualitative methods; interviewing study participants, reviewing documents, and reflection on researcher's experience. Data was analyzed using qualitative traditions. The study concluded that successful adoption and implementation of RBA is conditioned by five factors: opportunity for the organization, professionality of the organization's team, team's commitment, RBAing

Abstract:
Nablus old center stands as a typical Arab city with a relevant geographical location. Successive historical periods distinguish its history - from Canaanite to Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Crusader or Ottoman - till nowadays. This cultural diversity has layered chronological strata on its urban fabric. Therefore, diverse historical characteristics reflected in the city’s urban morphology have undergone continued physical and functional transformations, not only gradually by time and various socio-cultural, economic or political factors, but also radically by earthquakes and war destructions. Present-day Nablus’ physical image echoes a palimpsest of urban/social identities and an asset for a very sensitive collective memory. This paper examines the formation, evolution and constitution of the old city of Nablus by a retrospective analysis that searches the morphological momentum for each phase in articulation with a reflection around its historical meaning for the city. Methodologically, this study is conducted on both urban and architectural levels, surveying street hierarchy and plot distribution. This understanding will be extremely important for an accurate perception of this tissue in order to advocate for a concerned idea of the city’s reconstruction, following recent urban annihilations. At a time when urban rehabilitation pushes plans for quick and immediate results, reading Nablus’ urban morphology can work as the lacking tool for an instructed and operative regeneration.

Abstract:

Abstract:
<p>This paper presents dedicated frameworks, developed within European-funded projects, to create integrated seismic risk models from scratch for developing countries and raise the awareness of the general society. Focusing on the case-studies of Nablus in Palestine and Blida in Algeria, the different components of the risk model (hazard, exposure and vulnerability) are described. In specific, details are provided on: improved Hazard models (considering historical and instrumental catalogues for the West Bank and Northern Algeria); the collection of exposure and fragility data on buildings and bridges throughout the case-study regions, used to develop specific exposure and vulnerability models; the definition of social vulnerability models through census-based and scorecard approaches. Subsequently, the integration of the different components is carried out towards the calculation of integrated risk and considerations on the specificities surrounding developing countries are made. The final products of the seismic risk models can be used by different stakeholders to quantify risk and plan mitigation measures.</p>

Abstract:
Abstract Discrete fractional order systems have attracted more and more attention in recent years. Nabla Laplace transform is an important tool to deal with the problem of nabla discrete fractional order systems, but there is still much room for its development. In this paper, 14 lemmas are listed to conclude the existing properties and 14 theorems are developed to describe the innovative features. On one hand, these properties make the Ntransform more effective and efficient. On the other hand, they enrich the discrete fractional order system theory.
