Chin, Min-Zhi. "Naga: Combining 2D and 3D Animation." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2013. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/119.

Abstract:
Naga is an animated short about a lively dragon that roams about the lands embracing it’s surroundings dearly. It discovered a barren land while out exploring and was saddened by the sight. After pondering for a while, it then realized it could revive the land with it’s ability to summon rain using it's dragon ball. The short blends traditional animation and computer animation, where the look is similar to 2D animation but the character and a few environment elements are done in 3D. Software utilized to complete the short were Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Premiere Pro. The short showcases a stylized Chinese traditional ink painting style, key frame animation, and particle effects.

Hill, Kathryn Marie. "Gender and livelihood politics in Naga City, Philippines." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/975.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how livelihood diversification is also a site in which gender relations are unsettled, maintained and (re)configured. With the aim of strengthening the links between feminist and agrarian change scholarship, I present ethnographic material from Naga, a medium-size city in Bicol, Philippines, to explore how daily discourses, practices and performances of livelihood change are instrumental in mapping ways of life that are gendered. In the first part of the thesis, attention is devoted to the inadequate, or at least outdated, attention to gender relations in previous models of livelihood change, and to spell out some of the implications its integration may bring. In the remaining part of the thesis my aim is to indicate how this integration should be achieved. Specifically, I highlight some of the problems stemming from ‘structural’ analyses of gender, and emphasize the fresh perspectives opened up by a post-structural, performative approach. I then proceed to the Naga context, where I present two case studies to ‘flesh out’ these theoretical claims in more depth. Part One traces the involvement of state institutions in these changing political economies. Specifically, I consider how local state policies and practices associated with agrarian change are not simply implicated in people’s tendency to diversify, but also in the (re)production of gender identities. Notions of male responsibility and women’s rightful position in the home emerge as particularly important in this respect. In Part Two, I move to Pacol, a small farming community located on Naga’s peri-urban fringe. By drawing on interview and focus group material provided by ten ‘diversifying’ households, I consider how these discourses come into being; how they are worked through and (re)produced inperformances.

Imchen, Shisachila. "Morungs and megaliths : heritage among the Naga of Nagaland, northeast India." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10047448/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis draws on a year-long field study of morungs and megaliths as important components of Naga heritage, and on written sources documenting Naga ethnography and other relevant literature. It examines the ways in which these objects of material culture are used at two levels: the state and the village, in terms of projecting Naga identity. The phenomenological approach to the study of the stated theme brings out the process of embodiment, materialization and memorialisation of the Naga past in the present through megalithic building, interactions of the people with and within the morung, and festivals involving participation of individuals as members of the community at different levels, Khonoma being a case in point. The study has addressed itself to the dynamics of heritage politics, thereby filling in the gap area that had remained in the extant works on the Naga due to various factors, not least Nagaland’s volatile political climate and inaccessibility till recently. It reveals the extent and nature of state involvement in negotiating heritage to sell its idea of constructing a composite Naga identity with particular reference to the state-sponsored Hornbill Festival. The study also works at the level of village-centric identity formation through the process of socialization, a carry-over from their traditional past. Importantly the use of the phenomenological approach complemented by insights drawn from heritage studies on especially non-Western societies has opened up new lines of inquiry into the ways in which identity is built up, reworked and sustained. In this respect the study makes a significant contribution to the understanding of heritage in contemporary Nagaland and in the broader picture of material culture studies.

Abstract:
In folgenden Hauptkapitel (Chapter 2) werden die vom ägyptische Ministry of State of Antiquities (MSA) in dem Areal durchgeführten Ausgrabungen behandelt.
In this thesis, a group of eight rock cut tombs and two shaft-tombs located in Central Dra’ Abu el-Naga (CDAN) at the West Bank of Luxor were studied. The construction of these tombs dates mainly to the period of the New Kingdom (NK, c. 1550-1070 BCE), but they continued to be in use for many generations after the death of the original tomb owners. The framework of this study, as sketched in Chapter 1, is characterized by three approaches: the first section is titled The geographical and geological nature of DAN. The overview of The history of excavation at CDAN Finally, the focus is on the history of research on the necropolis of CDAN. In Chapter 2, the excavations conducted in the area by the Egyptian Ministry of State of Antiquities (MSA) are described. I described and discussed the architectural elements of the newly excavated tombs. At the end, the architectural styles that prevailed in the CDAN were described, as a step in clarifying the development of the history of the area. In Chapter 3, deals with the relics and traces of ancient burial customs, especially with the objects like statues, pottery, coffins, shanties, funerary cones, and other funerary equipment, which came to light during the excavations in the area. Particular attention was given to their dating. The last section, Chapter 4, the frequent re-use of the tombs in later periods, as illustrated, e.g., by ceramics and other small finds. At the end, the significance of the newly discovered tombs is highlighted. Further insights into the specific usages and functions of monumental tombs in CDAN in general were gained, and to increase the understanding of the connections, interrelationships and developments, this started from NK and ended to very modern time. The four main chapters are followed by a catalogue of objects.

Abstract:
Take a short walk with me. I want to tell you a story about looking for stories. In the beginning, I didn’t know that that was what I was doing. Like the Fool in the Major Arcana, I believe I cheerfully sauntered off the cliff onto thin air. I don’t know now if I’m walking on air or if I’ve crash-landed. But there was a journey in between all that. And that’s the story I’d like to share with you. It begins in a place called Nagaland, an Indian state populated by a tribal collective known as the Nagas. They are a group of many tribes whom the government of India considers part of the Scheduled Tribes of India. The tales of their respective origins are found in tribal myth or lost to time, but their present history makes regional, national and international headlines time and again. As a fourth-world indigenous cultural group, the Nagas have been ruled, for over fifty years, by economic under-development, political corruption, military oppression and the insurgency for an independent, mythical Nagalim. This is the Naga story, the only story that is newsworthy enough to capture a journalist’s attention. But peel that layer, and the next, and we discover other stories, forgotten, discarded or disregarded. Others are on the same path of discovery and dissemination – writing journal articles and research papers, or linking the Naga tale with those told by refugees from Myanmar and other marginal South-east Asian ethnic groups, attracting tourists through heritage sites and cultural festivals and bringing out the intermittent small ficto-critical novel. This thesis, consisting of an exegesis and a graphic novel script, revolves around a number of interrelated concerns: • the historical, political and cultural life of an Indian minority ethnic group known as the Nagas, • the question of revitalizing the folktales of the Naga oral tradition by adapting them in a graphic novel format, • along with its associated concepts of word-image dynamics and visual representation, • and a discussion of certain Naga folkloric elements which function as motifs in the graphic novel script. As the journey unfolds, we will encounter stories and images about the Nagas;and these in turn will help us imagine the world (imperfectly created as it may be) within the graphic novel script. My own effort to tell a Naga story leaps even further ‘left-field’ – an alternative, near-futuristic interpretation of an obsolete Ao-Naga myth laid out in a script for a proposed graphic novel. Exposing a personal interest in graphic storytelling and folktales, the script can be read as a hybrid text in terms of its layout and its narrative breaks and jumps. Originally written with an illustrator in mind, the script has evolved into a text-only dramatic piece that can be amended for future illustrative purposes. The intention was to develop a full-colour, hybrid graphic novel – pages of illustrated panels interspersed with prose passages, photographs and collages. Precedents like Alan Moore’s Watchmen and Terry Moore’s Strangers in Paradise (which alternate panels with mock newspaper article extracts, diary entries or song lyrics), and David Mack’s Kabuki series (which juxtaposes photo-realistic collages and manga influences within a complex visual narrative) were to serve as guide and inspiration for the design of the graphic novel. The narrative flows both linearly and non-linearly, evoking the rise and fall of memory in flashback sequences, in first-person prose monologues, in the retelling of selected folktales, and to an extent, in the characters’ thought captions which are similar to dramatic soliloquies or asides. I consider the script a multifaceted structure that can be read as a dramatic piece by itself, or as a work-in-progress script for an illustrated graphic novel. But as the cultural settings may be unknown to the initial readers, the exegesis you now hold in your hands serves as an explanation, a road map to navigating your way around, and recognising the local areas and their inhabitants.

Chase, Jeffery Park. "Broadening our classroom : planning education and the Naga City Studio course at UBC SCARP." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2278.

Full text
Abstract:
Broadening our Classroom is organized into two parts. Part One deals with a theoretical discussion about the meaning and motivations of planning education in contemporary societies and times. From here, planning education can be both contextualized and understood within the wider discourse of what planning education should be in the 21st century. This study then works to illuminates areas of planning education that must be critiqued and challenged based on the way they are currently taught and engaged. Here, the ideas of ‘skills’ and ‘competencies’ are teased in an attempt to fruitfully grapple with planning education from the standpoint of its students. This points towards the need for 21st century planners to observe values, utilize skills and employ took-kits which include the ability to work in cross-cultural settings effectively (at home and abroad), an area of planning education which is to an extent lacking in practice. The merger of planning education and cross-cultural learning experience is proposed as a mechanism to address some of the challenges associated with this endeavor. Part Two transports the theoretical discussion into practice through an evaluation of the Naga City Studio Course offered by the School of Community and Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia (SCARP UBC). In May and June 2007, 20 UBC students participated in a ‘Planning Studio’ course in Naga City, Philippines. The Naga City Studio course serves as a case study in operationalizing a direction for planning education. The course is evaluated and analyzed primarily through participant’s experiences and reflections on the course. It becomes clear that the Naga City Studio Course serves as a creative and ultimately profound example of new directions in planning education, providing students the opportunity to gain cross-cultural exposure and to better understand and enhance their planning related skills within a cross-cultural context. The opportunity for students to both develop and better understand the (cultural) competencies necessary as practicing professionals is a key outcome of the course and serves as the key finding of Broadening our Classroom.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis explores the entanglement of religion and identity politics in the Indo-Burma borderlands and the indigenisation of Christianity there through grassroots processes of cultural revivalism. The ethnographic focus is on the Sumi Naga from the state of Nagaland in Northeast India. While the Sumi started converting to Baptist Christianity at the beginning of the twentieth century, conversion rates accelerated especially in the 1950s and again in the 1970s when two evangelical revivals swept across the lands of the Sumi and resulted in their conversion en masse. Significantly, these Great Revivals coincided in time with the most turbulent political history of this borderland region, as the Sumi, alongside all other Naga, were waging an armed struggle against the Indian nation-state for their right to self-determination and independence. While this struggle is now largely being fought with political rather than military means, it remains ideologically motivated by Naga perceptions of their distinct ethnic identity, history and culture compared to the rest of India. Baptist Christianity has played a central role in shaping and sustaining these perceptions. Over the past several decades following the Second Great Revival in the 1970s there has been a movement from within Sumi society to reconstruct and redefine their identity by drawing heavily on both their contemporary religion (Baptist Christianity) and their 'good' pre-Christian culture, which had been demonised and rejected in the course of earlier conversions. Discourses have been circulating in public space on the urgent need to reconceptualise collective Sumi identity by reviving, or preserving, those aspects of pre-Christian Sumi culture that are perceived as 'good' and constitutive of Sumi-ness but are currently 'under threat' of being gradually lost to modernity and foreign influences. These discourses are directly linked to processes of cultural revivalism across Nagaland, which have been motivated by a sense of the perceived loss of 'good' cultural heritage and cultural roots. This thesis is an ethnographic study of these processes of identity (re)construction within a Sumi Naga community. It sets out to examine the ways in which Baptist Christianity is central to everyday life in a Sumi village and how it plays an important role in forging group cohesion and solidarity through ritual practice and various forms of fellowship. The thesis then proceeds to study the phenomenon of cultural revivalism in both its discursive and practical manifestations. The thesis argues that the cultural revival has not reduced the centrality of Baptist Christianity to Sumi self-ascriptions and perceptions of identity, but is rather thought to have enriched it and given it a stronger cultural foundation. Hence, a Sumi Naga Christianity is being created which is perceived as unique, indigenous and distinct in its own right. The thesis attempts to explore the essence of this vernacular Christianity against the backdrop of its specific historical, economic, political and spiritual context and the all-encompassing Naga struggle against the Indian nation-state. In pursuing these issues, the thesis locates itself within debates on the intersection between religion and identity politics, which prevail in many contemporary contributions to the anthropology of Christianity.

Naga, Nishal. "An investigation into the possible neuroprotective properties of phenytoin." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2002. http://eprints.ru.ac.za/2314/1/NAGA-MSc-TR03-77.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Cerebral ischaemia, traumatic injury to the brain, inflammatory neurological disorders and HIV infections are amongst the most prevalent causes of neurodegeneration. Neuroprotective strategies are usually to limit the progressive secondary injury that generally occurs, thus limiting overall tissue damage. Neuroprotective strategies are usually to limit the progressive secondary injury that generally occurs, thus limiting overall tissue damage. Sodium channel blockers have been often used for this matter as they prevent the cascade of events culminating in free radical generation and eventually neuronal apoptosis. Newer compounds, such as antiperoxidants and free radical scavengers, show encouraging experimental results, but their clinical use is still very limited. Phenytoin being a popular drug in the treatment of epilepsy has also been used as a neuroprotectant during certain neurological emergencies and in pharmacological prophylaxis of post-traumatic epilepsy. Furthermore this agent functions by prolonging inactivation of voltage gated sodium channels. In these sets of experiment the neuroprotective properties of phenytoin were examined. The histological study revealed that phenytoin confers protection to the CA1 and CA3 regions of the hippocampus under the insult of QUIN. Cells maintain their characteristic shape and minimal tissue necrosis occurs in the presence of this agent. The in vitro effect of this antiepileptic drug on free radicals generation shows that phenytoin does not reduce or prevent the formation of these reactive species. Lipid peroxidation was induced using QUIN and iron (II), two known neurotoxins. The study reveals that only lipid peroxidation induced using iron (II) is reduced by phenytoin. These experiments were carried out in whole rat brain homogenate. These studies show that phenytoin possesses poor free radical scavenging properties. However, the dose-related reduction of iron-induced lipid peroxidation allows for speculation that phenytoin interacts with iron in order to reduce neuronal damage. Metal binding studies were performed using UV, IR and electrochemical analysis to examine the interaction of phenytoin with iron (II) and iron (III). Phenytoin, when added to iron (II) in solution, first oxidises the latter to iron (III) and maintains it in that form. A shift in the peak was observed in the UV spectrum when iron was added to phenytoin. Moreover, electrochemical studies indicate that the interaction between the metal and the ligand is very weak. The IR analysis it shows that phenytoin may be coordinating with iron through the Nitrogen atom on the phenytoin molecule. These studies show that phenytoin maintains iron in its oxidised form, which is a good property to possess as a neuroprotectants. Pineal organ culture showed that phenytoin does not increase melatonin production but slightly and non-significantly reduces the levels of this pineal hormone. However there is a significant rise in precursor NAS levels. As melatonin is known to possess antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties, this could mean that this drug can cause the CNS to become more susceptible to attacks by reactive oxygen species.

Abstract:
New archaeological research was carried out between 2009 and 2011 by the Ministry of State for Antiquities (MSA) at central Dra’ Abu el-Naga. Joining the MSA excavation team in the field in 2009, the author has been studying the findings from this area since then. The excavation site is situated ca. 700 km south of Cairo, opposite the modern city of Luxor in Upper Egypt on the western side of the Nile. Dra\' Abu el-Naga is the modern name of the northern area of the extended necropolis. Central Dra’ Abu el-Naga lies to the north of the causeway of queen Hatshepsut and just south of the German and Spanish concessions, overlooking the valley where a temple of Amenhotep I was once erected. The tombs are situated just below the hilltop of the middle range of the Dra’ Abu el-Naga hills Review And to reach fulfill this main objective, it was proposed in 2013 to follow these research objectives: Consequently one main objective was the recording of architecture of the new discovered tombs and the reconstruction of the original context of the objects, which formed part of their burial equipment. The overlying aim of the research is: Preparing plans of all the new tombs, and also sections and 3D views of two of the tombs as they are very complicated. To place the new tombs in their archaeological context. 2D drawings can be tricky for some people to read, but 3D model views are a universal language that anyone can understand. Heneise, Michael Timothy. "The life and landscape of dreams : personhood, reversibility and resistance among the Nagas in Northeast India." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25523.

Full text
Abstract:
Ancestral knowledge exerts itself in the daily lives of the Nagas in Northeast India, whether through passed down clan genealogical knowledge, or through dreams and waketime omens. The Angamis, one of the Naga tribes, articulate a close relationship between the ancestral spirits they meet in their dreams, and ruopfü, one’s always-perceiving soul or life-being, complicating the boundary that would separate dreaming and waking states. In mediating these two states, the Angami ruopfü therefore has a powerful ability to inhabit these two spaces simultaneously, thus allowing for their reversibility. These processes of inhabiting the ‘real’ in waking and dreaming, occur in the midst of significant political turmoil, and this thesis examines the ways in which dreams index terrains of clan and state power in relation to a broader cosmic struggle. Moreover, as a guiding principle of personhood, dreaming, and reversibility elucidate the ways in which Angamis explore, understand, and generate alternative futures. I begin the discussion in the domain of the kitchen hearth. Within this gendered space characterised by a continuous rhythm of quotidian practices and attentiveness to dreams and omens, a significant political counter-narrative to the enduring pattern of clan patriarchy emerges. This tense symbiosis is characterised by a relationship of nurturance, but at the same time resistance to patriarchal meddling in domestic affairs. I then describe how this tension mirrors a power dynamic perceived by many in their dreams in which the clan collectively confronts morally ambivalent spiritual forces that inhabit spaces outside of delimited clan domains. This recalls earlier times when public life centred on the propitiation of powerful spirits in order to preserve harvests, and protect clan settlements in times of war. With the advent of Christianity, public discourse is transformed not solely via the iconoclastic demands of the American missionaries, but through a spatiotemporal reorientation of public life towards regularised church membership, and the development of missional institutions. Traditional public rituals, and ritual objects gradually faded, but informal inspirational practices such as divinational healing and dreaming, rooted as they were in the domestic sphere, remained integral to community life. In contemporary Nagaland, Christian charismatic groups have reconsidered the efficacy of traditional practices, and the inspirational potential of dreams, and opened spaces for supervised spirit mediation. These practices, however, have the potential to disrupt the church, and the community, and community elders are alert to their potential dangers, often seeking to defuse spirit mediated charisma as it emerges. The elder generation frequently cites the role of divination in spurring upheaval, and within living memory a young Naga prophetess, inspired by powerful dreams, succeeded in mounting a tribal uprising against British rule in the region. The power of visions and dreams to inspire political movements has not been lost on more recent Naga political groups, and in the final chapter I draw parallels between the nature of charisma to inspire political agency, and the function of the oneiric in normative patriliny, especially in public events, and ultimately in the construction of nationalist ideology. Finally, though the material and social circumstances separating public and domestic spheres in Angami life-worlds continually produce divergent political imaginaries, reversibility reveals how these formations emerge, how they coexist and continuously shape daily life, and how they produce the potentialities for unified political resistance.

In order to do so, the methodological approach derives from theories relating to Landscape Archaeology, which efficiently manages to compile and to link prosopographical-genealogical, archaeological and Geographical Information System (GIS) data, meaning that the area of Dra Abu el-Naga can be studied as a "ritual landscape". The advantages of this type of research include the creation of a holistic conception of the Theban necropolis, especially of Dra Abu el-Naga, by reconciling textual and archaeological perspectives. The ancient landscape of the study area and its surroundings have been remodelled and the palaeorelief reconstructed by establishing a connection between the geological-geomorphological and topographical data with GIS visibility analyses, all of which were surveyed according to the historical, cultural and religious context. GIS is an essential tool for the study of the sacred space and can be used to offer a detailed cartography. For the first time, the tombs have been recorded by precise geographic coordinates, which are offered in this research. The research model created in this work has shown the chronological development of the study area, the clear visual relationship between the tombs of a specific reign and the key monuments contemporary to them. Kinship, political marriages and attempts to acquire a higher rank, as well as the professional and family links between many of the owners of these tombs, demonstrate that they also wanted to be connected in the afterlife. The work undertaken at Dra Abu el-Naga opens up new lines of investigation into the wider landscape of the necropolis. Therefore, this model could be productively applied to future studies of other ancient Egyptian tombs, necropolises and funerary landscapes. The resulting wider insight into the Theban necropolis, including the position played by the Dra Abu el-Naga cemetery within the Theban funerary context, is essential since the aim of this research project is to approach to the actual funerary landscape of Thebes as an inseparable complex of diverse components.

Boro, Krishna. "A Grammar of Hakhun Tangsa." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/22739.

Full text
Abstract:
Hakhun Tangsa is one of around eighty ethnic and linguistic communities called Tangsa or Tangshang. Hakhuns live mostly in Arunachal Pradesh, India, and in Sagaing Division, Myanmar. The number of speakers is estimated at around ten thousand. Hakhun is a Tibeto-Burman language, and it forms a subgroup with Nocte, Wancho, Phom, Konyak, Chang, and Khiamngan called Konyak or Northern Naga. Hakhun is a tonal language with twenty-two consonants, six vowels, and a simple syllable structure. Open word classes include Nouns and Verbs; property concept terms form a subclass of verbs. Noun roots are mostly monosyllabic, and most multisyllabic nouns are compounds. Nominal morphology includes prossessive prefixes and a set of semantically specific suffixes. Case is coded by postpositions. Verb roots are also mostly monosyllabic. A few verbs have suppletive stems. Verb serialization is common, and expresses complex events like resultative and sequential. A few grammaticalized verbs/elements contribute abstract meanings like phase, associated motion, causative, benefactive, etc. Typical verbal categories are expressed by independent particles. The most extensive and grammatically obligatory set consists of single syllable particles called operators, which express verbal categories like tense, mood, deixis, negation, inverse, and argument indexation. The typical argument indexation pattern is hierarchical. Deviations from this pattern is used to express certain pragmatic effects like affectedness and politeness. Non-verbal clauses may take overt copulas depending on tense and polarity. Most semantic distinctions, such as equation, property-concepts, quantification, simulation, and location are expressed by the nominal strategy. Existential and possession are expressed by a distinct strategy. Typical verbal clauses include intransitive, transitive, and ditransitive; less typical ones include weather condition, sensation-emotion, reflexive, reciprocal, and ‘need’ constructions. Person-based split-ergativity is seen in case marking, where first and second person singular arguments follow accusative, and the rest ergative alignment. Accusative alignment is also found in argument indexation in non-final clauses. The object alignment is indirective in case marking. Complement clauses include sentence-like, non-finite, and infinitive complement clauses. Adverbial clauses include various kinds of temporal clauses, temporal/conditional clauses, counterfactual, concessive, purpose, and substitutive clauses. Clause chaining (medial-final) is prevalent. Independent sentences are linked through tail-head linking and through connectives.

Abstract:

In his own time, the nirguna poet-saint Kabir was a controversial figure. He spoke ill of Islam and Hinduism alike, yet, in the end, both groups claimed him as their own. In this essay, various images of Kabir are discussed. Kabir as he appears in legends; Kabir as he appears in his poems; Kabir as a historical figure. But more importantly, Kabir as he is perceived as today. The image of Kabir, as it were. The question of ‘who Kabir was’ is posed to members of two groups in the city of Banaras, India — one group Muslim (Julaha), the other Hindu (Yadav).

"Production of Sialic Acid Analogs in Engineered E. coli: Characterization of Amino Sugar Recycling." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/39807.

Full text
Abstract:
This research focused on the study of the amino sugar recycling and sialic acid degradation pathway as a possible entry point for N-acyl glucosamines for the production of sialic acid analogs. Meeting this objective would allow the development of a bacterial strain capable of producing non-natural nonulosonic acids that could be used in the development of medicines, vaccines or useful compounds for the study of interactions between pathogenic organisms and their host. The first step was to understand how N-acetyl-D-glucosamine-6-phosphate deacetylase reacts to different types of substrates in order to determine its tolerance to the size of acyl groups in acyl amino sugars. This was achieved by studying the enzymatic activity in an in vitro system. We determine that the enzyme has a preference for small and slightly bulky acyl groups. Then, an in silico docking modeling and an in vivo system experiment were carried out. These experiments allowed to confirm the previous results. The second project was carried out due to the uncertainty of whether the kinase involved in the catabolic pathway would be able to phosphorylate the substrates. By quantifying residual ATP, the high specificity of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine kinase could be verified. This result led us to think about the design of an organic synthesis strategy that would allow the phosphorylation of glucosamine in carbon 6. A simple synthetic route was designed based on the protection of the two most reactive moieties of the amino sugars and the reactivity of the hydroxy group on carbon 6. However, we had problems with the purification step of the final product due to its high polarity. The next stage of this investigation was to confirm the transformation of GlcNAc into ManNAc. For this, an NMR analysis was designed that would detect the presence of both sugars in the reaction system. The epimerization of ManNAc to GlcNAc was detected successfully. Notwithstanding, the reverse reaction could not be detected. Based on the results obtained in the previous stage, we realized that an error was made in the epimerization reaction since we placed the wrong kinase because we did not take into account its substrate specificity. Finally, we tried to produce sialic acid analogs in a fermentative system using different genetic variants of Escherichia coli. Two of the expected analogs, Neu5Pr and Neu5nBu, were obtained. In addition, NagA activity towards substrates with small acyl groups was confirmed.

Abstract:
The Asiatic cobras of the genus Naja constitute a group of medically important venomous snakes. Until now, their taxonomy has been extremely confused. This study uses multivariate analysis of morphological characters recorded from museum material in order to elucidate the population systematics of this complex. The Asiatic cobra complex, hitherto considered to be monospecific, was found to consist of eight separate species: the Central Asian cobra, from the Caspian Sea to India; the Indian spectacled cobra, from India, and neighbouring countries; the monocellate cobra, from north-eastern India, Indochina and northern Malaysia; the Chinese/Indochinese spitting cobra, from south-eastern China and Indochina; the equatorial spitting cobra, from the Malayan Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo and Palawan; the southern Indonesian spitting cobra, from Java and the Lesser Sunda Islands; the southern Philippine spitting cobra, from the south-eastern Philippines; and the northern Philippine cobra, from the northern Philippines. The pattern of geographic variation within these species is investigated. The species are described, and the differences between them outlined, in order to allow the identification of specimens. The results are related to literature data on cobra bites and venom composition. Considerable immunological variation between the venoms of different cobra taxa has been reported, and this study has shown that in some cases, two species whose bites require different antivenoms occur sympatrically over large areas, emphasising the medical importance of venomous snake systematics. Variation in fang structure is also investigated, and related to literature reports on the incidence of spitting behaviour in these snakes. Two species are incapable of spitting, the other six show a varying degree of adaptation to this defensive behaviour. Finally, the biogeographical factors which may account for the present-day distributions of these species are investigated.

Abstract:
The ongoing shrubification of the Arctic tundra may in the future have serious consequences for the ecosystem. More trees and shrubs will lead to changes in species composition and may alter diversity, carbon and nutrient balance, and result in a lower albedo. Reindeer can reduce the spread of shrubs, but plants have developed chemical defenses against herbivores made up of secondary metabolites. The concentration of these can be affected by several factors, including damages from herbivory and the availability of nutrients. In this study samples of the shrub B. nana ssp. nana (dwarf birch) and soil samples were collected from outside and inside herbivore exclosures in Fennoscandia. Then, concentrations of phenols and terpenes, the major defense component in birches, and soil nutrient availability were analyzed. A proxy was created for measuring the density of reindeer at each location. The aim was to evaluate this data and see if the exclusion of herbivores or the nutrient availability had any effect on the concentration of the defense components. Few differences between the exclosures and control plots could be found and only two out of 18 t-tests showed any difference that was deemed statistically significant. The density of herbivores was found to have no effect and the nutrient availability showed no clear results. This study concludes there are many factors influencing the concentration of defense components in dwarf birches, including the rising temperatures, that need to be considered in future studies. A better understanding of this subject would be essential in visualizing the future of the Arctic tundra.

Abstract:
The Khoisan are the indigenous peoples of Southern Africa, whose existence can be traced back some 2000 years to the Cape area of what is today South Africa. The Nama, the people whose dancing is the subject of this study, are the descendents of these original inhabitants of South Africa. The Nama are scattered among five 'coloured-reserve' areas in the north-west area of South Africa. This study concerns the Nama who live in !Khubus in the Richtersveld region of Namaqualand near the Orange River. Like other indigenous peoples in what is today popularly referred to as the 'Rainbow Nation', the Nama have been profoundly affected by colonisation and a brutal apartheid regime. It is not too difficult, at a superficial level at least, to distinguish supposedly traditional Nama customs from those they have adopted. The most obvious of these can readily be observed in language (Afrikaans), religious practices, architecture, and dancing. These activities are fertile examples of both acculturation and survival. The activities known as The Nama Stap (Step) and The Nama Stap Dance the subject of this dissertation, are particular examples of such fusion and endurance. They at once demonstrate the Nama drive for survival through adaptation and their need for continuity. This dissertation assesses and critiques movement analysis techniques. It then applies complementary methodologies including anthropology, ethnography, dance analysis, Labanotation and Laban Movement Analysis to address the continuities to be found In what the Nama call their 'national dance', how these have survived through a process of fusion, and how this historic female puberty rite has been transformed Into a contemporary statement of the solidarity between Nama women.

The purpose of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Remote Imaging System Acquisition (RISA) space camera prototype is to integrate six existing optical instruments into a single system that will withstand the extreme temperature fluctuations, high radiation, and variable pressures of the space environment. This technical report describes the state of the previous year's prototype and details our efforts toward the progression of the design to a functional, high quality instrument. Appendices are included detailing the current state of work and the next steps for the team that takes on this project next year. The focus of the work this year was to design a broadband variable-focus camera using novel imaging components, troubleshoot the previous year's I2C code, design a wireless information transfer system and conceptualize a flight ready mechanical design for future implementation. Our final design utilizes a liquid lens in conjunction with a cerium doped double gauss, eliminating more traditional mechanical focusing mechanisms. The camera will be controlled wirelessly through 802.11g protocol by the base system, with image data downloaded at projected speeds of 54 kBps.
