Abstract:

Les micronageurs et parmi eux les microangeurs artificiels sont en général, limités à exister dans des écoulements dominés par des forces visqueses. Ces écoulements sont caractérisés par un bas nombre de Reynolds (Re). Cela impacte la stratégie de nage et plus particulièrement les séquences de forme possibles, qui doivent nécessairement être non-réciproques dans l'espace de déformation pour espérer induire un déplacement net non-nul. De plus, due aux forts effets de traînée, les vitesses de nage sont limités à des valeurs faibles.Dans cette thèse, on examine la possibilité d'utiliser un mécanisme de nage basé sur l'instabilité de flambage d'une sphère creuse. Cette instabilité est provoquée en soumettant la sphère à une onde de pression. La particularité de ce mécanisme est qu'il satisfait par construction la condition nécessaire de nage à bas Reynolds exposée précédemment. De plus, la rapidité de la déformation lors de l'instabilité pousse à prévoir l'apparition d'effets inertiels, et ce même à l'échelle microscopique.Une étude expérimentale a été conduite à l'échelle macroscopique dans le but de comprendre la dynamique de l'instabilité et son impact sur le fluide qui entoure la coque creuse. Ces expériences nous permettent de montrer qu'un déplacement net non-nul est produit pour tous les régimes d'écoulements.On met en évidence le rôle de paramètres géométriques, des propriétés du matériau composant la coque creuse et de la rhéologie du fluide sur l'efficacité de la nage.On montre l'existence d'un optimum de déplacement net pour des valeurs intermédiaires du nombre de Reynolds. Pour expliquer cela, on se sert de mesures de PIV résolues temporellement pour mettre en évidence la présence d'effets d'histoire non-triviaux qui augmentent le déplacement net.On dérive un simple modèle en se basant sur les observations expérimentales pour montrer que ce régime optimal de nage est atteignable pour des sphères microscopiques, ceci est possible grâce l'activation rapide de l'instabilité. Cette propriété permet aussi une excitation à haute fréquence en utilisant des ultrasons. Une étude d'échelle nous permet de prédire une vitesse de nage de 1 cm/s pour un micro-robot contrôlé à distance. Cet ordre de grandeur de vitesse est idéal pour des applications biologiques comme la distribution ciblée de médicaments
Microswimmers, and among them aspirant microrobots, are generally bound to cope with flows where viscous forces are dominant, characterized by a low Reynolds number (Re). This implies constraints on the possible sequences of body motion, which have to be nonreciprocal. Furthermore, the presence of a strong drag limits the range of resulting velocities.Here, we propose a swimming mechanism which uses the buckling instability triggered by pressure waves to propel a spherical hollow shell. The particularity of this mechanism is that it fulfills naturally the necessary condition of swimming at low Re. In addition, the swiftness of the instability might produce inertial effects even at the microscopic scale.With a macroscopic experimental model we show that a net displacement is produced at all Re regimes. We put in evidence the role of geometrical parameters, shell material properties and rheology of the surrounding fluid on the swimming efficiency.An optimal displacement is reached at intermediate Re. Using time-resolved PIV measurements, we explain that non-trivial history effects take place during the instability and enhance net displacement.Using a simple model, derived from the study of shell dynamics, we show that due to the fast activation induced by the instability, this regime is reachable by microscopic shells. The rapid dynamics would also allow high frequency excitation with standard traveling ultrasonic waves. Scale considerations predict a swimming velocity of order 1 cm/s for a remote controlled microrobot, a suitable value for biological applications such as drug delivery

Abstract:

Ce travail doctoral a pour objectif de mettre en place des méthodes permettant de quantifier les efforts subits par le nageur avec palme, lors de la pratique de 3 activités (Natation, Randonnée Aquatique et Body-Board). Pour ce faire, un modèle utilisant des procédures de dynamique inverse a été mis en place. Dans la première phase de cette étude, la cinématique tridimensionnelle des 3 segments du membre inférieur gauche a été analysée. Il en résulte 3 cinématiques fondamentalement différentes. Avec un modèle type Bottum-Up, la mesure d’efforts distaux est nécessaire. Un robot palmeur a donc été développé, afin de reproduire la cinématique du pied pour chacune des ces pratiques et ainsi permettre une mesure fiable des forces et moments au centre articulaire de la cheville. Ainsi, nous avons quantifié via le modèle, les moments au genou et à la hanche. Ainsi, via le robot nous pouvons quantifier l’effet d’un design de palme sur les efforts subit par l’utilisateur à la cheville, et s’assurer par le modèle que les efforts ne sont pas répercutés sur le genou ou la hanche. En plus de cette étude biomécanique, une analyse de l’activité musculaire a été réalisée sur les principaux muscles moteurs du membre inférieur, pour différentes cinématiques et différents designs de palme. Les résultats nous ont prouvé que le design de la palme a un effet non uniforme sur l’ensemble des muscles, et que pour chacune des pratiques, les demandes musculaires ne sont pas similaires
The present work had in objective to develop some methods to quantify the joint torque endured by a fin swimmer during is activity for 3 sports (Swimming, Snorkeling, Body-Board). In this way, a model using inverse dynamic methods has been done. During the first step of this study, the 3D kinematic of each activity was mad on the 3 segments of the lower limbs, and this allows defining 3 specifics motions. For a Bottom-Up model, a forces measurement on distal segment is needed to make the calculation. So, a swimming fin robot has been develop to reproduce the foot kinematics for each activity and measure all forces and torques on the ankle joint. By this way, with all this inputs, by the model we can quantify the demands on knee and hip. With this robot, we measure the effect of design modification on muscular request on the joint ankle, and by the model we assure torques are not postpone on knee or hip. In addition to this biomechanical study, a muscular activities study has been realise on the main muscle, and this for different kinematics and different fin blade shapes. The results acknowledge that the fin designs differentiate the effect on specific muscles, and that for each activity the muscular requests are not the same

Les suspensions actives définissent des ensembles de particules autopropulsées au sein d'un fluide. Elles regroupent une diversité de systèmes tels que les bactéries, les micro-robots, ou encore le plancton. Ces systèmes actifs motivent plusieurs communautés scientifiques (Physique, Mécanique, Biologie et Mathématiques) souhaitant développer une compréhension à visée universelle pour décrire ce nouvel état de la matière. Fournissant leur propre énergie en vue d'un mouvement dans le volume, ces systèmes sont souvent pris comme modèles touchant à une problématique de physique statistique hors-équilibre. Ce travail de thèse a pour objet de fournir une compréhension des interactions entre le mouvement des suspensions actives et un environnement complexe. Le micro-nageur Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii (CR), choisi ici comme modèle de particules actives, est étudié sous plusieurs approches complémentaires couplant expériences, théorie et simulations numériques. Le recours à la micro-fabrication par lithographie nous permet la réalisation de milieux complexes variés faits de confinements et de réseaux de micro-piliers, à même de perturber le champ hydrodynamique généré par les micro-nageurs. Ainsi, la présence d'obstacles et confinements agit sur la dynamique de la particule, résultant d'encombrements stériques couplés à des interactions hydrodynamiques de longue portée. En l'occurrence, les CR voient leur diffusivité évoluer avec le confinement, ce qui peut s'expliquer par des arguments géométriques et hydrodynamiques. Par ailleurs, le phototactisme (répulsion des micro-nageurs par une source lumineuse) en milieu complexe est également abordée. La nage des CR devient alors purement balistique, cela nous permet d'étudier la nage des suspensions à travers une constriction. En particulier, le colmatage et l'effet faster-is-slower se vérifient chez le micro-nageur comme chez de nombreux autres systèmes (piétons, moutons, simulations numériques, souris, etc...) révélant ainsi le rôle important de la friction entre cellules
The active suspensions are defined as assemblies of self-propelled particles in a fluid. They are composed of a variety of different systems such as bacteria, micro-robots, or planktons. These active systems inspire several scientific communities (Physics, Mechanics, Biology and Mathematics) in order to develop a universal understanding to describe this new state of matter. Providing their own energy for moving in bulk, these systems are often considered as interesting models to answer the questions related to non-equilibrium statistical physics. This thesis aims at understanding the interactions between the motion of particles and its complex environment. The micro-swimmer Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii (CR), chosen as a model of active particles, is studied with several complementary approaches incorporating experiments, theory and numerical simulations. The use of soft lithography as the micro-fabrication technique allows us to create various complex environments made of confinements and networks of micro-pillars. Those environments can disturb the hydrodynamic fields generated by the micro-swimmers. Thus, the presence of obstacles and confinements affects the dynamics of the particles, resulting from steric hindrances coupled with long-range hydrodynamic interactions. In this case, the CR has an evolving diffusivity with confinement, which can be explained by geometric and hydrodynamic arguments. Additionally, phototaxis (repulsion of micro-swimmers by a light source) in a complex medium is also studied. The swimming of the CRs then become entirely ballistic, so that we can study the suspensions’ motion through a constriction. Particularly, clogging and faster-is-slower effects are observed in the micro-swimmers, as well as in many other systems (pedestrians, sheeps, mice, numerical simulations, etc...) revealing the significant role of friction between cells

Abstract:

Jody Nagel completed his first piano concerto in 2005. I will discuss technical challenges within the piece and practice techniques to overcome these challenges so that one can perform the work successfully. I cover fingering, pedaling, texture, character, and harmonic issues. I also give performance advice to make the orchestral reduction more pianistic while still honoring the orchestra’s influence within the work.

Dans son œuvre, notamment dans The View From Nowhere, Thomas Nagel propose une réflexion unifiée sur certains problèmes philosophiques fondamentaux tels que la relation corps-esprit, l’identité personnelle, la liberté, la connaissance, la relation entre la raison et le réel. Il les comprend comme diverses formes d’un problème unique : le conflit entre certains aspects de notre conception subjective de la réalité, celle que nous développons spontanément depuis notre point de vue de créature particulière dans le monde, et certains aspects d’une conception objective de la réalité, indépendante de nos caractères particuliers, dont la recherche s’impose à nous et que nous tentons de développer. Nous avons mené un double travail : exposer les conceptions de Nagel à propos de la nature et de l’origine des problèmes philosophiques en question, prolonger ces réflexions. En effet, les conceptions de Nagel permettent de proposer une définition nouvelle et féconde de la métaphysique comme réflexion sur les conflits entre les points de vue interne et externe, d’élaborer une typologie a priori des solutions qui peuvent être apportées aux problèmes métaphysiques, de comprendre la nature et le ressort commun, de type idéaliste et anti-métaphysique, des courants dominants de la philosophie qu’ont été, durant la première partie du vingtième siècle, la phénoménologie et la philosophie de Wittgenstein. Enfin, cette typologie permet de clarifier la réflexion à propos des problèmes métaphysiques particuliers et de mesurer la portée des arguments en jeu. Nous avons établi ce point en abordant deux problèmes métaphysiques particuliers, celui de la relation corps-esprit et celui de la perception
In his works, especially in The View From Nowhere, Thomas Nagel offers a unified reflection on some philosophical fundamental issues such as the mind-body link, the personal identity, the liberty, the knowledge and the relationship between reason and reality. He sees these matters as various forms of a sole issue: The conflict between certain aspects of our subjective understanding of reality - the one resulting from our spontaneous reflection as particular beings - and other aspects of an objective one - independent from our specific nature and which science facts imposed on us and that we try to develop. We have led a double task: first, to put forward Nagel’s conceptions of nature and of the origin of the philosophical issues at stake, then, to elaborate on these thoughts. Nagel’s conceptions allow, indeed, to give a new and fruitful definition of metaphysics as a reflection on the conflicts between the internal and external point of views. It also theoretically allows, to develop a typology of the possible solutions that can be brought to metaphysical concerns, to understand nature and the common responsibility - the idealistic and anti-metaphysical ones - of the main philosophical movements of the first part of the twentieth century. Wittgenstein’s phenomenology and philosophy that is. Eventually, this typology helps clarifying the reflection upon specific metaphysical issues and measuring the impact of the arguments at stake.
