Abstract:
The multi-scale dynamics of aqueous solutions of the hydrophilic peptide N-acetyl-glycine-methylamide (NAGMA) have been investigated through extended frequency-range depolarized light scattering (EDLS), which enables the broad-band detection of collective polarizability anisotropy fluctuations. The results have been compared to those obtained for N-acetyl-leucinemethylamide (NALMA), an amphiphilic peptide which shares with NAGMA the same polar backbone, but also contains an apolar group. Our study indicates that the two model peptides induce similar effects on the fast translational dynamics of surrounding water. Both systems slow down the mobility of solvating water molecules by a factor 6–8, with respect to the bulk. Moreover, the two peptides cause a comparable far-reaching spatial perturbation extending to more than two hydration layers in diluted conditions. The observed concentration dependence of the hydration number is explained considering the random superposition of different hydration shells, while no indication of solute aggregation phenomena has been found. The results indicate that the effect on the dynamics of water solvating the amphiphilic peptide is dominated by the hydrophilic backbone. The minor impact of the hydrophobic moiety on hydration features is consistent with structural findings derived by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements, performed in attenuated total reflectance (ATR) configuration. Additionally, we give evidence that, for both systems, the relaxation mode in the GHz frequency range probed by EDLS is related to solute rotational dynamics. The rotation of NALMA occurs at higher timescales, with respect to the rotation of NAGMA; both processes are significantly slower than the structural dynamics of hydration water, suggesting that solute and solvent motions are uncoupled. Finally, our results do not indicate the presence of super-slow water (relaxation times in the order of tens of picoseconds) around the peptides investigated.

Abstract:
High anion gap metabolic acidosis (HAGMA) is a hallmark of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). Occasionally, a Normal Anion Gap Metabolic Acidosis (NAGMA) can be seen, especially during the treatment phase. In this case report, a 55-year-old lady with diabetes mellitus who presented with a 2-day history of fever, lethargy and multiple episodes of vomiting and diarrhoea. Initial laboratory investigations revealed: capillary blood glucose as 27 mmol/L, urine ketone as 3+, blood ketone as 3.5 mmol/L, serum bicarbonate as 14 mmol/L, and serum chloride as 95 mmol/L. She was treated with intravenous normal saline fluid resuscitation and constant rate insulin infusion which was fortunately accompanied by stabilization of blood glucose and normalization of blood ketone to 0.2 mmol/L. However, despite normalization of her anion gap (25 to 14), she remained unwell with acidotic breathing due to refractory hyperchloraemic NAGMA with bicarbonate at 11 mol/L and chloride of 112 mmol/L. It was then decided to administer 100 mL of 8.4% Sodium Bicarbonate solution. The next day, she was no longer tachypneic as her bicarbonate and carbon dioxide improved to 21 mmol/L and 32 mmHg respectively. The presence of NAGMA in DKA should prompt clinicians to conduct a thorough search for possible underlying causes, such as gastrointestinal fluid loss, sepsis and chloride load from aggressive fluid resuscitation with normal saline. Sodium bicarbonate should only be considered in intractable cases to correct a NAGMA and not routinely used in the treatment of DKA.

Abstract:
The biology and chemistry of proteins and peptides are inextricably linked with water as the solvent. The reason for the high stability of some proteins or uncontrolled aggregation of others may be hidden in the properties of their hydration water. In this study, we investigated the effect of stabilizing osmolyte–TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide) and destabilizing osmolyte–urea on hydration shells of two short peptides, NAGMA (N-acetyl-glycine-methylamide) and diglycine, by means of FTIR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. We isolated the spectroscopic share of water molecules that are simultaneously under the influence of peptide and osmolyte and determined the structural and energetic properties of these water molecules. Our experimental and computational results revealed that the changes in the structure of water around peptides, caused by the presence of stabilizing or destabilizing osmolyte, are significantly different for both NAGMA and diglycine. The main factor determining the influence of osmolytes on peptides is the structural-energetic similarity of their hydration spheres. We showed that the chosen peptides can serve as models for various fragments of the protein surface: NAGMA for the protein backbone and diglycine for the protein surface with polar side chains.

Abstract:
This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the interactions between dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and two small peptides, diglycine and N-acetyl-glycine-methylamide (NAGMA), in aqueous solutions using FTIR spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and DFT results revealed that DMSO does not form direct bonds with the peptides, suggesting that DMSO indirectly influences both peptides by modifying the surrounding water molecules. The analysis of HDO spectra allowed for the isolation of the contribution of water molecules that were simultaneously altered by the peptide and DMSO, and it also explained the changes in the hydration shells of the peptides in the presence of DMSO. In the DMSO–diglycine system, DMSO contributes to the additional strengthening of water hydrogen bonds in the reinforced hydration sphere of diglycine. In contrast, DMSO has a more moderate effect on the water molecules surrounding NAGMA due to the similarity of their hydration shells, leading to a slight weakening of the hydrogen bonds in the NAGMA hydration sphere. DFT/ONIOM calculations confirmed these observations. These findings demonstrated that DMSO influences peptide stability differentially based on their structural characteristics.

Abstract:
Abstract Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy Type 1 (APECED) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder predisposing to early development of chronic mucosal candidiasis and progressive development of various endocrinopathies, such as Addison's disease, Primary Hypoparathyroidism, and Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Few cases described in literature regarding renal involvement in this disorder, with most common manifestation being tubulo-interstitial nephritis, however, there is limited evidence regarding presentation of APECED with hypokalemia due to concomitant Type I Renal Tubular Acidosis (RTA). Case of a 47-year-old female with past medical history of APECED Type 1 (consisting of hypoparathyroidism, adrenal insufficiency, and chronic mucocutaneos candidiasis), T1DM on honeymoon, hypothyroidism, and nephrolithiasis presenting to the emergency department complaining of bilateral upper and lower extremity weakness of one week in evolution, but worsening on day of admission. Denies associated constitutional symptoms. Strong positive first-degree relative history for autoimmune diseases. Physical examination: 2/5 strength in all four extremities, deep tendon reflexes grossly intact, no gross sensory or motor deficits. Patient on oral steroid therapy for her Addison's, calcitriol supplementation for hypoparathyroidism, and potassium chloride supplementation since a prior hypokalemic episode 17 years ago. Laboratory workup results remarkable for sodium: 140 mmol/L (N: 135-144 mmol/L), chloride: 110 mmol/L (N: 95-105 mmol/L), potassium: 2. 0 mmol/L (N: 3.4-4.5 mmol/L), central bicarbonate: 18mmol/L (N: 23-31 mmol / L), anion gap: 12 (N: 10-12), glycosylated hemoglobin: 5.2% (N: 4.7-6.2%) and anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies >25,000 U/mL (N: <5 U/mL). Adrenal insufficiency was ruled out by laboratory findings, but she had normal anion gap metabolic acidosis (NAGMA) and hypokalemia. Urinalysis was negative for urinary tract infection but with pH: 7. 0 (N: 4.5-8. 0). Urine spots, measured to find the cause of her NAGMA, showed urine sodium: 92 mmol/L, urine potassium: 10 mmol/L, urine chloride: 90 mmol/L, and urine anion gap of 12 mEq/L, which is positive and suggests low urinary NH4+, consistent with Type I (Distal) RTA as the main etiology. Patient started on IV potassium replacement, which increased potassium to 3.8 mmol/L, and improved acidotic state, with central bicarbonate of 29mmol/L, and overall symptoms. Patient was discharged home with alkali therapy (Sodium citrate) for Type I (Distal) RTA. RTA is an underrecognized condition that may be inherited or acquired. Diagnosis is difficult but can be verified with a thoughtful workup. RTA should be considered for any patient with otherwise unexplained hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis and may be the presenting manifestation of autoimmune diseases. Regular renal monitoring for any APECED patient should be performed. We present this case as evidence for the coexistence of several different immune-mediated diseases in the clinical context of APECED with an unusual concomitant Type I (Distal) RTA, where there is few documented evidence of association with this disorder. Abstract:
History is a branch of science that examines the events in the past, and historiography is the transfer of the events that happened in the past to future generations by writing them down through historians. Although the Ottoman Empire's understanding of historiography was built on the legacy of the Turkish-Islamic states before it, over time it took on a unique structure. In this context, in the later periods of the state, historiography activities gained importance and emerged as an official state duty under the name of chronicler. Mustafa Naȋmâ Efendi, who is the subject of our study; He is one of the famous chroniclers who was born in 1655 in Aleppo and lived in the 17th century Ottoman period. He is distinguished from other Ottoman historiographers in many ways in Ottoman historiography with his work called Ravzatü’l-Hüseyn fȋ hulâsati ahbari’l-hâfikayn, which he wrote as the first chronicler. In this respect, the author and his work have been widely used in every period. In this study, we will try to evaluate Mustafa Naȋmâ Efendi's life, his work, historiography in the context of his work, and the innovations he brought to the field of history from a contemporary perspective.

Jones, Erma J. J. "Nama marks and etchings : employing movement analysis techniques to interpret the Nama Stap." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2009. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/29264/.

Abstract:
The Khoisan are the indigenous peoples of Southern Africa, whose existence can be traced back some 2000 years to the Cape area of what is today South Africa. The Nama, the people whose dancing is the subject of this study, are the descendents of these original inhabitants of South Africa. The Nama are scattered among five 'coloured-reserve' areas in the north-west area of South Africa. This study concerns the Nama who live in !Khubus in the Richtersveld region of Namaqualand near the Orange River. Like other indigenous peoples in what is today popularly referred to as the 'Rainbow Nation', the Nama have been profoundly affected by colonisation and a brutal apartheid regime. It is not too difficult, at a superficial level at least, to distinguish supposedly traditional Nama customs from those they have adopted. The most obvious of these can readily be observed in language (Afrikaans), religious practices, architecture, and dancing. These activities are fertile examples of both acculturation and survival. The activities known as The Nama Stap (Step) and The Nama Stap Dance the subject of this dissertation, are particular examples of such fusion and endurance. They at once demonstrate the Nama drive for survival through adaptation and their need for continuity. This dissertation assesses and critiques movement analysis techniques. It then applies complementary methodologies including anthropology, ethnography, dance analysis, Labanotation and Laban Movement Analysis to address the continuities to be found In what the Nama call their 'national dance', how these have survived through a process of fusion, and how this historic female puberty rite has been transformed Into a contemporary statement of the solidarity between Nama women.

Abstract:
Naga is an animated short about a lively dragon that roams about the lands embracing it’s surroundings dearly. It discovered a barren land while out exploring and was saddened by the sight. After pondering for a while, it then realized it could revive the land with it’s ability to summon rain using it's dragon ball. The short blends traditional animation and computer animation, where the look is similar to 2D animation but the character and a few environment elements are done in 3D. Software utilized to complete the short were Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Premiere Pro. The short showcases a stylized Chinese traditional ink painting style, key frame animation, and particle effects.

Hill, Kathryn Marie. "Gender and livelihood politics in Naga City, Philippines." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/975.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how livelihood diversification is also a site in which gender relations are unsettled, maintained and (re)configured. With the aim of strengthening the links between feminist and agrarian change scholarship, I present ethnographic material from Naga, a medium-size city in Bicol, Philippines, to explore how daily discourses, practices and performances of livelihood change are instrumental in mapping ways of life that are gendered. In the first part of the thesis, attention is devoted to the inadequate, or at least outdated, attention to gender relations in previous models of livelihood change, and to spell out some of the implications its integration may bring. In the remaining part of the thesis my aim is to indicate how this integration should be achieved. Specifically, I highlight some of the problems stemming from ‘structural’ analyses of gender, and emphasize the fresh perspectives opened up by a post-structural, performative approach. I then proceed to the Naga context, where I present two case studies to ‘flesh out’ these theoretical claims in more depth. Part One traces the involvement of state institutions in these changing political economies. Specifically, I consider how local state policies and practices associated with agrarian change are not simply implicated in people’s tendency to diversify, but also in the (re)production of gender identities. Notions of male responsibility and women’s rightful position in the home emerge as particularly important in this respect. In Part Two, I move to Pacol, a small farming community located on Naga’s peri-urban fringe. By drawing on interview and focus group material provided by ten ‘diversifying’ households, I consider how these discourses come into being; how they are worked through and (re)produced inperformances.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, 2000.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 69-74).
Previously undescribed fossils of weakly calcified metazoans were recently discovered in the terminal Proterozoic Nama Group of central and southern Namibia (Grotzinger et al., 1995), in sediments that contain the terminal Proterozoic index fossil Cloudina. The new fossils are closely associated with thrombolites and stromatolites that form laterally continuous biostromes, isolated patch reefs, and isolated pinnacle reefs. Because these fossils are preserved as calcitic void-fill in a calcite matrix, individual specimens cannot be freed by conventional techniques. Rocks containing the fossils are ground and digitally photographed at thickness intervals of 25 pm. A battery of image processing techniques is used to obtain the contour outlines of the fossils in serial cross sections. A Delaunay triangulation method is then used to reconstruct the morphology from tetrahedral components which connect the contours in adjacent layers. It is found that most of the fossils resemble a single morphology with some well-defined characters that vary slightly among individual specimens. This fossil morphology is described in this thesis as Namacalathus hermanastes. A mathematical description of the morphology is used to obtain a database of randomly-oriented synthetic cross sections. This database reproduces the vast majority of cross sections observed in outcrop. In addition, the most common orientation, the mean size, and other population statistics are measured for Namacalathus fossils within an individual rock sample.
by Wesley Andrés Watters.
S.M.

AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF SUSANNE BÖHM, for the Master of Arts degree in LINGUISTICS, presented on APRIL 12, 2010, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: CLICKS IN XHOSA AND NAMA: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Karen Baertsch ABSTRACT. This study is a comparative analysis of Xhosa and Nama clicks. It contains an acoustic pilot study for which one Nama speaker and one Xhosa speaker were recorded. Differences and similarities in place of articulation and accompaniment were measured between clicks in word-initial position for both languages. Previous studies showed that clicks with the same accompaniment are similar across both languages. For the clicks measured in the study, this was not exclusively the case. Overall, measuring differences and similarities between clicks of the two languages, a larger sample with more speakers is needed, which exceeds the scope of this thesis.

Wheeler, Alan David. "Impacts of grazing systems on Nama Karoo phytodiversity." Thesis, Cape Technikon, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/2030.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Nature Conservation))--Cape Technikon, 2003.
The study was carried out on two adjacent farms on the plains of the Nama Karoo near Beaufort West. The impacts of three grazing treatments (a) zero grazing (b) non-selective grazing (c) conventional grazing, on plant diversity and certain vegetation parameters were compared. Unpredictable and variable rainfall and major disturbance events such as droughts drive vegetation change in the Nama Karoo. Major recruitment events are rare and can determine Karoo vegetation composition for many years. The diversity of plant species plays an important role in determining vegetation composition during major recruitment events and following drought or disturbance such as grazing. Grazing can influence the composition, abundance and seed production of Karoo plants and in so doing influence the future abundance of desirable and undesirable forage species. These changes may only become evident over long periods, but small changes in vegetation as a response to grazing treatment can accumulate considerably over time.On the farm Elandsfontein, studies have shown that non-selective grazing leads to a higher plant turnover rate, resulting in more vigorous and productive plants, and improved ecosystem functioning. However there is no evidence of this grazing system promoting or reducing plant diversity. The aim of this study was to test whether the non-selective grazing system promoted or reduced plant diversity compared to no grazing and conventional grazing. The hypothesis was that there were no differences between the grazing treatments in terms of plant diversity or any of the vegetation parameters measured. To evaluate this hypothesis, plant data were collected from the three grazing treatments using the Modified-Whittaker vegetation sampling method. The method was further modified for this study to allow for accurate abundance measurements rather than estimates, and an increased area for recording species richness. Using various diversity indices that incorporate species richness and the proportional abundance of species, plant diversity values for each treatment were obtained. No differences in terms of plant diversity were found between the treatments. A significant difference between treatments was found in the density of plants, particularly in perennial grasses and shrubs. Canopy cover percentage did not differ for individual species or as total cover between the treatments.

Abstract:
In Algeria, nearly 20 million hectares are threatened by wind erosion. For a long time, the phenomenon of wind erosion and its hamlful effects on the natural environ ment constitute a serious problcm, especially in the arid regions of the country. These last years. Following the irrational exploitation of the natural resources (fodder) and with the setting in culture of the fragile grounds (cIearing) this process was particularly accentuated. The extent of degradation in the arid region of the wilaya of Naâma generated a new situation characterized by the reduction of vegetable cover, the decrcase in the production as weIl as the extension of the fast stranding on the zones development. With through this study, we tried to show on the one hand, the potential of the use of the remote sensing : and the GIS for the characterization of the condition of the land use and its space-time evolution from the treatments carried out on a series of Landsat TM and MSS imagery of various dates (1972,1987 and 2002). Ln addition to place at the disposal of the potential users and the decision maker's information on the environment and the natural resources of these zones, via the installation of a prototype integrated in a geographical infommtion system. Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:

Poller, Andreas, Ju¨rg W. Schneider, Piet Zuidema, Johannes Holocher, and Gerhard Mayer. "Performance Assessment Modelling for the Geological Siting Regions for the L/ILW and HLW Repositories in the Context of the Swiss Site Selection Plan." In ASME 2011 14th International Conference on Environmental Remediation and Radioactive Waste Management. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icem2011-59306.

Full text
Abstract:
In Switzerland, the Nuclear Energy Law requires the disposal of all radioactive waste in deep geological repositories. The procedure for selecting the repository sites is defined in the Sectoral Plan for Deep Geological Repositories and consists of three stages. In Stage 1, the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) proposed geological siting regions based on criteria relating to safety and engineering feasibility. As part of Stage 2, Nagra has to select at least one site within each siting region, to carry out a provisional safety analysis for each site and a safety-based comparison of the sites. In order to achieve these objectives, the state of knowledge of the geological conditions in the siting regions has to be sufficient to perform the provisional safety analyses. In October 2010, Nagra submitted a report which documents Nagra’s technical-scientific assessment of this precondition, based on a comprehensive list of processes and parameters relevant for safety and engineering feasibility. A part of this assessment consists of test calculations for the provisional safety analyses. This paper summarizes how the numerous test calculations have been identified, how the concepts of radionuclide release from the repository are implemented into numerical codes and how input data and results are organized in order to ensure transparency and traceability.

Abstract:

Abstract:
