Full textThe suspensions of microscopic objects with the ability to propel themselves into the surrounding fluid are systems of growing interest in the scientific community. Due to their intrinsic out-of-equilibrium dynamics in the sense of statistical physics, they generate complex effects. Among the existing self-propelled micro-objects, green micro-algae are an important part of the biomass of Earth and they actively participate to the recycling of CO2 by their photosynthetic activity. Moreover they have remarkable potential for the production of bio-fuels, waste reprocessing, cosmetics and dietary supplements production. From an industrial point of view, understanding the dynamics of this type of swimming microorganism is of primary interest. This work presents the study of the dynamics of microalgae Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii. Using a system of particle tracking with optical imaging that we have developed, we analyze the mechanism of stroke used by the algae up to its implications in terms of collective effects on the dynamics of swimming in a semi-dilute suspension

Full textPropulsion in breaststroke swimming results from the succession of simultaneous movements of the arms and legs. Another specific feature of this stroke is a complete or partial underwater recovery of the segments. As a consequence, the swimmer must optimaly coordinate the motor actions of his arms and legs. Although the typical coordination patterns of the breaststroke have already been described in swimming manuals, these descriptions refer more to theoretical models. Thus, the main goal of this doctoral dissertation is to characterize more accurately the arm-leg coordinations in the breaststroke. This goal can be studied according to the skill level and the swimming paces. The three studies exposed here will develop these aspects. The first study focuses on the arm-leg coordination patterns of elite swimmers. The second study analyses the effect of these different coordination patterns on the kinematics of horizontal displacement. Finally, the third study adresses the coordination pattern of the novice swimmer. The main results show that elite swimmers tend to optimalize their coordination by maintaining a greater motor continuity. This limits the intra-cyclic velocity drop during the lag time between the arm and leg propulsive actions. Furthermore, the coordination pattern of the novice swimmer indicates a superposition of contradictory actions from a biomechanical view point ? The consequences of these observations are discussed

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to study the place of a sports career alongside the obligations of life from a biographical perspective. The records of the French Swimming Federation has allowed us firstly to show the influence of age and gender on the abandonment of sport during the first years of participation. Sport has to become a long-terni habit before it becomes a career. Secondly, a biographical study of competitive swimmers has allowed us to demonstrate that the place held by sport evolves through a lifetime. Educational problems have little impact on the sports career. However, the sports career is destabilised by changes in life during higher education. The position which sport takes alter this step is independent of the involvement of the swimmer. It is rather the manner in which the swimmer adapts to his new situation as a student in conjonction with the chosen field that determines the subsequent developments in his student life, sports life and professional life

Full textRobotic micro-swimmers are able to perform small-scale operations such astargeted drug delivery, and minimally invasive medical diagnosis and surgery. However, efficient actuation of these robots becomes more challenging as their size decreases. Hence, wireless actuation is preferable over built-in actuation sources, one of the most popular strategies is the magnetization of parts of the swimmer and its actuation with an external magnetic field. In this thesis, we focus on flexible magnetic micro-swimmers that are similar to spermatozoa in their design and flagellar propulsion. Our goal is to use numerical modeling and optimal control tools to improve the performance of existing swimmers made at the ISIR laboratory (Institut des Systèmes Intelligents et de Robotique) and to propose a numerical control design method for experimental flexible micro-swimmers.Firstly, a simplified 3D dynamic model of a flexible swimmer has been developed, based on the approximation of hydrodynamic forces and the discretization of the curvature and elasticity of the tail of the swimmer. By fitting the hydrodynamic and elastic parameters of our model accordingly, we are able to obtain propulsion characteristics (mainly the frequency response of the swimmer) close to those experimentally measured. Secondly, we numerically solve the optimal control problem of finding the actuating magnetic fields that maximize the propulsion speed of the experimental swimmer under constraints on the control that reflect the constraints physically imposed on the magnetic field. The optimal magnetic fields found via numerical optimization are then implemented in the ISIR experimental setup in order to benchmark the experimental performance of the computed controls and the ability of the model to predict the trajectories of the experimental swimmer

Full textThis work address different situations where active matter, made out of self-propelled particles, is submitted to external constraints. In a first part, we consider the response of magnetotactic bacteria –capable of swim alignment along magnetic field lines- directed through an hourglass shape geometry. We characterize the dynamic properties of the system, both at the individual bacteria scale and at the scale of the jammed region or of the induced outgoing jet. We show that in high density regions, couplings between the bacteria interactions, swim velocity and magnetic forcing take a much more complex form than had been considered so far in theoretical models. In a second chapter, we are addressing a new active system made out of camphor disks lying at the air-water interface. First of all, we study in details the individual swim properties of such particles, which spontaneously break the system symmetry to start moving. In particular, we show that all experimental data can be rationalized within the framework of a very simple model of this complex problem where hydrodynamic flows and surfactant transports are coupled through Marangoni stress. In a last chapter, we addressed the collective dynamics of an assembly of such interfacial swimmers that interact through the flow and chemical fields they generate. At intermediate swimmers concentrations, an intermittent swim regime appears characterized by pseudo-periodic activity bursts. Using tools and concepts from the turbulence domain, we show that, remarkably, this simple system exhibits dynamical properties matching the ones of canonical turbulence as predicted by Kolmogorov in the 40s. This demonstration opens up rich perspectives in the historical domain of turbulence together with in the emerging one of active matter

Full textIn the setting of a yearly programming of the swimmer practice, we integrated longitudinal biomechanic, physiological, biologic and psychological control and follow-up to determine the induced effects of the training during and at the end of four main periods : adaptation at early season, month of the Ramadan, preparation to the national championishs, increase of intensity and volume of training (140%). To respect the "physiological and psychological comfort" of the swimmers as well as the coach program we chose the following tools : cardiac frequency (FC) and blood micro-samples before, during and after the standardized sessions and maximal tests, registration of stroking parameters (stroke length, stroke rate and stroke indexes), psychological POMS test, performances and biological balance. To analyse the blood micro-samples, we used the FT-IR spectrometry and had finalize a technique calculation with the Pärtial Least Square (PLS). Main results : the FC and biomechanics are appreciable but insufficient to judge the swimmer's adaptation during the different periods. Weekly biologic analyses prove to be execellent to account for the deleterious effects of greatly increased load. Tension, vigor and tiredness are the three most appreciable variables of the POMS. A multiple regression permitted us to hierarchize the most explanatory variables of the increase of the performance : [glucose], [AGL], [IgA], stroke index, tension, [urea]

Full textAfter a review of the litterature dealing with the assessment of high level swimmers and with the problems linked with the growth of sporting children, the study focusses on a population of boy swimmers (age 12) and girl swimmers (age 11). A set of "on the spot" tests has first been used to assess and find these swimmers. A medical and sporting observation has then been set up over a period of 21 months concerning a selection of 8 male swimmers and 8 female swimmers. Checking the respiratory abilities, the vo2 max, the lactacidemia, the hemodynamics and the specific aptitudes for swimming in relation with civil and osseous age has permitted the estimation of the respective shares, of growth and training in the chronometric improvements of these swimmers in pre-puberty or puberty stage. Taking into account this study and its continuation it should be possible to understand better and to proportion the necessary amount of training, during this periode of rapid growth, to give the swimmers the opportunity to reach the highest level while growing up and keeping good health

Full textMagnetic microrobots, which swim using bio-inspired propulsion modes, appear very promising for manipulation and characterization of objects at microscopic scale inside confined and very restricted environments, unlike conventional micromanipulation methods. The literature proposes a variety of microrobots with different geometric shapes and magnetic properties. However, the motion controls proposed remain simple, imprecise and insufficiently robust for performing real tasks. In addition, there is still uncertainty that all these artificial microswimmers can accomplish the same tasks with equal performance. The objective of this thesis is thus to propose : generic motion controls by visual servoing in space for all kinds of microswimmers with nonholonomic constraints in order to improve the microswimmer performances, a set of comparison criteria between robots with a different topology or propulsion mode for choosing the most efficient microswimmer in order to perform a specific task. Path following control laws in space are synthesized and experimentally validated on helical and flexible swimmers under different conditions. These robots operate in low Reynolds number fluid, imitating respectively bacteria and spermatozoa and are actuated with uniform magnetic field. These two classes of swimmers have different actuation mode and geometric shape. Their performances are thus compared according to the task to be performed, the environment in which the robots evolve and the manufacturing constraints

Full textThe setting of the municipal swimming pool permits a sensory approach to otherness, a different means of assessing human seings in an urban environment. Is this behavior representative of the ways in which peuple co-exist in an urban context, or is it specific to this precise space ? This type of space, structure, and moment suggests a concentration of behaviors, of relationships, within a compressed time frame. This is a realm of intense intimacy, composed of sensations, of specific perceptions, of a principally non-verbal communication of the senses. Despite the constraints (truncated perceptions of the other, the necessary limitations of the functional body), one notes instances of creativity, appropriations, reappropriations, lessons, know-how ; a combination of consideration and attentions, of strategies and techniques. This study unfolds in three stages. First: a presentation of the various municipal swimming pools in which these observations took place, reflections on the role of the anthropologist on this specific terrain, on the methodology employed, and on the different disciplinary fields involved. Two : identifying and defining the threshold conditions that enable the perception of other swimmers. Three : highlighting the modalites of learning to swim in an urban pool : know-how, techniques, and stumbling blocks. The conclusion offers proposals for the current renovations undertaken in parisian municipal swimming pools, suggesting a final practical application of the current work

Full textThis work focusses on the study of the turbulent hydrodynamic flows in human swimming during the submerged phases: after the start dive and after a turn. Its objective is to test various swimming positions in order to improve the hydrodynamic performance of high-level swimmers. More precisely, the study of the effect of the head position on the resisting drag force met by the swimmers was analyzed in a fine way. 2D and 3D CFD simulations were carried out. Three positions of the swimmer’s head were studied in the 2D case: raised, aligned and lowered with respect to the presumed rectilinear axis of the swimmer’s body. The results show that a position of the head "aligned" offers less resistance by comparison to the "raised" and "lowered" positions. The effect of the choice of the turbulence model was also studied in the 2D and 3D cases. The comparison of the numerical results obtained with results from experiments carried out at INSEP with high-level swimmers of the French swimming team shows that the standard k-ω turbulence model is the most appropriate tested model to find the vortical structures which develop around the body of the swimmer and to predict the drag forces opposed by the fluid. This work is supplemented by a thermal study. An experimental part, aiming at drawing a parallel between the energy expenditure of the swimmers and their cutaneous temperature after effort by using infrared thermography, made it possible to show significant variations of the distribution of the cutaneous temperature according to the swimming style. Finally, a numerical study of the influence of the thermal gradient between the water of the pool and the cutaneous temperature of the swimmer shows that a reduction of about 1. 2 % on the total drag force is possible by increasing the temperature of the water from 20°C to 30°C

Full textIn my thesis, I studied three problems involving E. Coli bacterial suspensions. Firstly, I focused on the Brownian motion of passive tracers in this particular active suspension close to a surface. Buoyancy and non-buoyancy swimming solutions were tested, revealing a linear increase of the passive tracer diffusion with the "active flux", obtained by the active concentration of bacteria multiplied by the mean velocity. Boundary confinements were also explored in buoyancy conditions, showing a better momentum transfer of the active bacteria as the height of the confinement gets smaller. The use of artificial swimmers also leads to similar results in the enhancement of the diffusion. Secondly, I considered the modification of the fluid viscosity caused by the presence of these self-propelling entities. It is known that for pusher swimmers as bacteria the viscosity can even be smaller than the suspending fluid. The lack of experimental result showing this effect in the bulk inspired us to build a Y shape micro-fluidic channel in order to study the rheology of wild type E-Coli suspension. Preliminary results show a non-Newtonian behaviour of active solution with a decrease of the liquid viscosity at low volume fractions and low shear rates. Thirdly, I proposed to address the question of dispersion and transport of E. Coli suspensions flowing in a micro-channel with a constriction. Here, in a confined environment the interactions with the boundaries and the geometry of the channels play an essential role. Surprisingly, my results show that the flow in a channel can produce a re-concentration of bacteria after passing through theand this can be controlled by the flow

Full textSwimming Federation), an automatic tracking approach using video sequences. To do this, we propose a new 8K shooting system adapted to the aquatic environment and allowing a pool calibration. This establishes the link between pixel and metric coordinates, which allows among others, to extract the concerned lane to carry out the different treatments. In order to initialize the tracking, it is necessary to localize the swimmer. For this, we propose to use an a contrario approach to detect movement, then the Scaled Composites JTC approach to precisely localize the swimmer’s head. Afterwards, we implement and adapt several tracking techniques well-known in the literature, namely those based on the NL-JTC correlation, color histograms, Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and histograms of oriented gradient (HOG). Given the various limitations of these techniques, we propose new optimized approaches based primarily on data fusion. First, we develop a multitracking approach consists of several tracks, where each track represents one of the tracking techniques mentioned above. Then, a choice based on the color histogram is made to select the best decision among those offered by each track. This approach has significantly improved the results, but it remains insufficient for the performance analysis. Therefore, we propose a new dynamic fusion approach that combines NL-JTC correlation plane and color scores plane in order to generate a richer description of the target (form + color). This approach has shown very good results in the case where the target is visible but it is still sensitive to occlusions. To solve this problem, we improve this proposed approach by tracking simultaneously the head and the swimsuit of the athlete. This multi related targets approach enables, through a complex decision criterion, to find the occluded zone based on the visible one. Finally, a performance study is conducted and the results have validated the system. In particular, we were interested in cyclical, intra-cyclical and instantaneous speed measurements, to study and improve the swimmers’performance

Full textThe social pragmatic of the jugments about children, as a part of a sociology of critic, is developped using as a starting point the analysis of theorical agumentations and practical trials of people that disagree about what is a child, about how children differ from adults and about how adults should take care of them. These operations of qualification of the child are analysed at first in contemporary scientific debates (one about socialization theories; one about the historical resarch of p. Aries, "centuries of childhood") and then in three past debates about the abilities of children (walking, working, swimming occurring respectively in xviiie, xixe, xxe century in france). I show that these controversies : 1) involve different ways of making differences and equivalences between child and adult; 2) differenciate trials of children following a distinction between justice principles and violence. At the heart of these disputes lie two kinds of construction of the child as a "person" : one that defines the attributes composing an human being; the other, metaphysical, that consider the chid as a moral being
