Abstract:
Undoubtedly, Nahj al-Balagha is one of the most important Islamic texts after the Noble Qur’an, serving as a comprehensive guide for human life in all aspects and providing direction in various fields. One of the areas that Nahj al-Balagha strongly emphasizes is governance and politics. The prominent view of Nahj al-Balagha on governance is religious democracy. This study, through an analytical and descriptive method, seeks to explore the question: What is the meaning of religious democracy from the perspective of Nahj al-Balagha and what are its theological foundations? In Nahj al-Balagha, divine governance is intertwined with democratic governance; if people desire to establish democracy, it must occur under the umbrella of divine governance. This notion is demonstrable within the theological foundations of monotheism, resurrection, prophethood, and Imamate. As a result, the theological foundation of religious democracy in Nahj al-Balagha can be summarized in this statement by the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (peace be upon him): “All of you are shepherds, and all of you are responsible for your flock.” Thus, religious democracy means the realization of divine vicegerency and the rule of the oppressed on earth, as also emphasized in the Noble Qur’an.

Abstract:
Prayer is one of the most significant acts of worship for Muslims. Undoubtedly, every action has its consequences and outcomes. The Holy Quran explicitly mentions some of these effects. Similarly, Imam Ali (AS) has highlighted certain impacts of prayer, many of which are recorded in the revered book, Nahj al-Balagha. The central question of this study is: What effects of prayer are mentioned in Nahj al-Balagha? This research, based on the collection of information through a library-based method and its analysis through a descriptive-analytical approach, aims to elucidate the impacts of prayer from Imam Ali's perspective in Nahj al-Balagha. The findings indicate that the effects of prayer in Nahj al-Balagha can be categorized into two groups: worldly and hereafter effects. Some of the worldly effects include: achieving perfection in faith; becoming a means of nearness to God; being the pillar of religion; serving as a sign of religiosity; being the fountainhead of other righteous deeds; fostering steadfastness in goodness; purifying from impurities; leading to the remission of sins; fostering indifference toward worldly goods; liberating one from bonds and constraints; being a source of hope and a path to salvation; acting as a safeguard for individuals; and promoting humility while avoiding arrogance, polytheism, and hypocrisy. The hereafter effects include serving as a shield against the torment of Hell.

Abstract:
One of the main goals of the critique of old texts, which is the basis of studies in different religions, is to find the author and owner of the text. Nahj-ul-Balagha is a book whose historical identity has long been the target of Shiite and Sunni critique. This research explores the critique methodology of this text. The method of criticizing the text of Nahj-ul-Balagha, due to its unique characteristics, can be presented in three general stages of narrative critique (redaction criticism), critique of the sources and documents (source criticism), and critique of the style (form criticism). However, only the outcome of these three stages and their aggregation can be considered a real and reliable critique of the text. Regarding the monotheistic sermons, although each of the stages of the critique of the text has a different consequence, combination of these stages admit the truthfulness of the attribution of these sermons to Imam Ali (PBUH). Eliminating the drawbacks, such as single-stage perspective, unfounded criticism, repetition of previous claims, disregarding the possibilities of meaning, and reducing historical critique to traditional one will improve the method of criticizing the text. Using analytical method and considering the historical critique of sacred books, the present study attempts to provide a suitable and comprehensive model for criticizing the text of Nahj-ul-Balagha.

Abstract:
This article addresses the examination of obstacles to implementing the economic rulings of Islam from the perspective of the Holy Quran and Nahj al-Balagha. The purpose of this research is to investigate the theoretical and practical obstacles in the domain of Islamic economic rulings from the perspective of the divine words of revelation (the Holy Quran) and Nahj al-Balagha. Generally speaking, some of these obstacles are analyzed and interpreted in the epistemological domain; meaning that Islamic economics, as an economic school of thought, is derived from a justice-oriented social system inspired by divine teachings. It differs as an economic doctrine from other economic schools based on human knowledge known as economics. It is evident that this epistemological difference signifies its immunity to the deficiencies and flaws that may occur in the theoretical domain of human knowledge (economics). Another part of these obstacles pertains to the operationalization of Islamic economic laws, which presents itself as a barrier to the execution of these laws and hinders the advancement of implementing Islamic economic rulings in the executive and operational fields. Since the religion of Islam, the Holy Quran, and the tradition of the infallible encompass all aspects of human existence, including livelihood and material life, addressing such challenges is an unavoidable necessity. The researcher in this article aims to explore this issue based on the divine verses in the Holy Quran and the conduct of Imam Ali (AS) in Nahj al-Balagha. The research method in this article is descriptive and analytical, utilizing library resources.

Abstract:
After the words of the Holy Quran and Prophet Muhammad’s tradition, the words of Imam Ali have in their own right bestowed upon mankind the finest and the most valuable social, political, and religious wisdom. Ever since a millennium when Sharif ar-Razi compiled Nahj al-Balagha using his unique and meticulous selection of Imam Ali’s speeches, letters, aphorisms, this invaluable book has deeply influenced many figures and luminaries among both Shia and Sunni Muslims and non-Muslims, all of whom have embraced and appraised it. In this article, the researchers look into the remarks of twenty one non-Muslim figures on the worth and merits of Nahj al-Balagha. Most of these Christian figures are contemporary Arab poets and thinkers: such individuals as Khalil Farahat, Rocks Bin Zayed Al Uzaizi, Joseph Hashim, and Nasri Salhab to name just a few; however, some orientalists and western thinkers are worth mentioning such as Nursisian and Henry Corbin.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to present an account and discussion of Imam Ali’s view on poverty and socio-economic justice. The concept of socio-economic justice is of utmost importance in Islamic teachings. Design/methodology/approach – This exercise is based on examining Nahj al-Balagha, a tenth century collection of sermons and letters of Imam Ali Ibn Abutalib. Findings – First, in Imam Ali’s view, socially just outcomes can only be achieved through just means and procedures. Second, acute and visible inequalities and side-by-side co-existence of extreme wealth and poverty in a society point to the existence of socio-economic injustices. Third, a society that is suffering from severe and continuous socio-economic injustices or, in other words, acute poverty and inequality will cease to prosper and develop. Fourth, the main objective of an Islamic governance system is to adopt policies, institutions and procedures that would reduce or eliminate socio-economic injustices. A government that fails to reduce socio-economic injustices, in Imam Ali’s view, has failed in its main mission of protecting the rights of the public and ensuring their prosperity. Finally, regardless of government action or inaction, each individual in a society is also responsible to reduce socio-economic injustices to the best of his/her knowledge and ability. Originality/value – This paper aims to present the first comprehensive account of Imam Ali’s view on poverty and socio-economic justice and it could prove to be practically useful to modern Muslims and non-Muslims alike, whatever their position in society.

Abstract:
Allah Almighty has made the life of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) a role model for the betterment and reforming of society. He (PBUH) delivered the message of Allah to the world and saved them from the torment of Allah, teaching them to worship and love one God. He gave a system of life that leads humanity to peace and security and is a total mercy for mankind. All his life he treated God's creatures with kindness and mercy. His mercy was not only for the believers, but also for the disbelievers. Therefore, in this article, the biography of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) will be narrated from Nahjul Balagha. Because Hazrat Ali (AS) has mentioned the good morals of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in Nahj al-Balaghah as well as somewhere he has described his virtues. In the same way, somewhere he has stated the purpose of enlightenment and somewhere he has shed light on patience and courage of the Holy Prophet (PBHU). Somewhere he has described asceticism and piety, somewhere he has mentioned his benevolence, somewhere he has mentioned a physician for the healing of the sick. Abstract:
Music forms an important part of influence on the audience and plays an important role in attracting intellects and minds. Rhetoric is one of the texts most in need of applying the potential of expression in order to influence the audience, because the artistic sermon (rhetoric) relies on absorption and persuasion; among them, political sermons are most in need of using emotional stimuli, so that the category of influence and persuasion can be realized and the audience acknowledges and believes in the thought that theorator (author) claim. Accordingly, the current research studies the quantity and quality of the use of music in the political sermons of Nahj al-Balagha, focusing on technical images based on descriptive-analytic method. The most important result of this study is that Imam Ali (as) has used visual images with the potential of music and uses two types of verbal and spiritual music, thus has realized making the peak of beauty, pictorial, and influential. The fact that verbal music is diverse in Nahj al-Balagha's political sermons and involves a variety of rhymes, pun and replication, but spiritual music is merely limited in implication and does not include confrontation and marriage.

Abstract:
The present study investigated the translation shifts and most frequent types of translation shifts according to Catford’s model in the translation of Sayings 1-30 in the Nahj al-balagha from Arabic into English. The researcher selected the first thirty sayings of the Nahj al-balagha for the analysis. Throughout the analysis, each shift strategy was traced and manually counted to determine the most frequent type of translation shift. The findings revealed that unit shifts were the most frequent type of shift (59.70%), followed by structure shifts (23.30%), then level shifts (10.70%), intra-system shift (4.50%), and finally class shifts (1.50%). Both translators used unit shift and structure shift with the highest frequencies in their translations. The results also indicated that, unlike Sayyid Ali Reza, Sayyid Muhammad Askari Ja’fari went beyond the surface structure and translated words into phrases and explained them in some cases, thus providing an understandable translation. Sayyid Muhammad Askari Ja’fari used unit shifts more frequently than Sayyid Ali Reza. Sayyid Muhammad Askari Ja’fari most of the time used unit shift to convey the message to the target language reader in a comprehensible way. The translator who used unit shift was successful in conveying the message of the source language text to the reader of the target language. Using unit shift made the target language's readers understand the material better.

Abstract:
Metaphor is a concept that connects two distant domains or concepts and helps with the recognition of a subjective concept from an objective and tangible one. It is one of the cognitive mechanisms of the cognitive semantics which plays a role in the organization of the human mind and perception of abstract concepts. The current study is aimed to discover the conceptualizations made in a precious work named ‘Nahj al-Balaghah.’ To do so, with the cognitive approach and utilization of the theory of conceptual metaphor, investigated the conceptual metaphors of the world conceptulized based on comestibles, so that the role of this cognitive mechanism in conceptualization and perception of the abstract concept of the world in Amir Al-Momeneen Ali’s discourse (PBUH) would be revealed. The most important results of the current study are: Analysis introduce new dimensions of Alavi’s discourse in Nahj al-Balaghah, and indicate that conceptual metaphor plays an important role in the conceptualization of the world in Nahj al-Balagha; without it, structuring of the concept of the world is very difficult. In this conceptualization, diversity of the source domains (Comestibles) in Alavi’s discourse conveys the extensiveness of the target domain aspects on the one hand and, on the other hand, indicates the mastery of Imam Ali (PBUH) in all these aspects and his mastery in forming them.

Abstract:
Security in various dimensions (cultural, social, military, economic) is the most important human need that is of particular concern to the Islamic holy religion. Economic security is one of the important dimensions of security that is closely linked to the fate of society. Because the development of a society needs its economic progress. The Islamic religion has always introduced various rules for the economic system in order to achieve a desirable and healthy economy. Amir al-Mu'minin Ali (pbuh), the first Imam of the Shiites, has in his scientific and practical course precious tips of a healthy economy that, after the Holy Quran, is the most important source of economic security. The Alawite government is also an example of practical Islamic governments. During his caliphate, Amir al-Mu'minin (pbuh) made every effort to have a favorable economy and the people of that community to live in economic security. The Emir (pbuh) proposes various points and strategies for achieving economic security, These include: overseeing affairs, dealing with corruption, creating a culture of endowment, combating usury, combating hoarding, fair judgment, promoting the economy, reforming consumption patterns, equitable division of public property.

Abstract:
No researcher or observer of the current state of Arabic language instruction in our schools can overlook the weakness of our students in this subject. Our students struggle with reading correctly, writing accurately without errors, and expressing themselves with precise and eloquent language. Additionally, they have difficulty understanding the meanings of literary texts and uncovering the imagery within them. This observation is supported by numerous scientific studies that have pointed to the weakness of students in the Arabic language, compounded by the continued use of traditional teaching methods, which have led to a lack of interest in learning the subject (Al-Rubaie, 1989). The study by (Al-Ubaidi) further confirmed a clear weakness among high school female students, especially in Arabic rhetoric. The issue of weak Arabic language skills is not confined to high school students; it extends to students in education colleges as well. Al-Jubouri's study revealed that the overall state of the Arabic language, particularly grammar, is distressing, reflecting the inability of Arabic language department students to master linguistic skills, especially syntax. Given all this, it has become natural for the Arabic language to drift away from everyday speech, and its rhetorical applications have become difficult for learners to comprehend, making it challenging for students to grasp its beauty and eloquence. Moreover, other reasons prompted the researchers to conduct this current study, including feedback from those who found the idea intriguing and believed it could motivate female students towards their lessons. Furthermore, there is a scarcity of studies that have explored teaching rhetoric by employing texts from Nahj al-Balagha by Imam Ali (peace be upon him). The researchers agree with opinions that attribute the majority of the problem to the aforementioned reasons. Therefore, the researchers have employed texts from Nahj al-Balagha in teaching Arabic rhetoric, hoping that this will be a small contribution to the larger goal of making this subject easier to teach

In addition to being a religious book with high human and moral themes, Nahj al-Balagha is considered a mirror of Arab culture and a literary masterpiece at the height of eloquence and eloquence, and because proverbs in the form of short, concrete and understandable phrases for everyone, experiences, thoughts and convey ideas, Imam Ali (AS) used it to facilitate the understanding of various political, social and moral concepts. In this article, we intend to criticize the way Dashti, Shahidi and Foladvand translated it by using Newmark's model due to the importance and cultural reflections of proverbs in understanding the cultural atmosphere governing Nahj al-Balagheh. In his evaluation model, Newmark divides cultural categories into five categories. While focusing on the fourth category, i.e. concepts, the current research has investigated the way of translating proverbs and comparing it with the methods provided by Newmark for the translation of cultural elements.

This article explores the importance of the ethical principles of governance described in Nahj al-Balagha letter 53, written by Imam Ali, for improving the performance of Moroccan public institutions. Faced with the challenges of transparency, justice and efficiency, exacerbated by corruption and mismanagement of resources, the study highlights how the values of justice, integrity and respect for human rights can be integrated into public management. By analyzing the importance of these core values, the study demonstrates how their integration into public management can potentially lead to greater transparency, efficiency and public trust. Univariate analysis provided an in-depth understanding of the effect of each value on governance. The study reveals that justice and integrity are strongly correlated with increased levels of transparency and administrative efficiency. In addition, the charter of religious values plays a key role in promoting social cohesion and respect for human rights within institutions.

Abstract:
Nahj al-Balagheh is one of the valuable religious texts, which has always been the focus of Iranian translators due to its deep concepts, and because of its high literary level, it has faced translators with challenges. It is obvious that in the translation process, in addition to the linguistic factors of the text, the context-oriented metatext elements also play an important role. Among the metatextual elements investigated in the field of translation studies are the cultural and ideological elements that are implied in the text of Nahj al-Balagha. Since the model of Carmen Garces is considered one of the most important models in the evaluation of translation quality, the present research aims to first introduce the principles and foundations of this model using the descriptive-analytical method and using the model proposed in the Garces theory. , then analyze and evaluate Dashti's translation of the sermon of Mutaqeen Nahj al-Balagheh using this approach and analyze the quality and manner of transferring metatextual elements such as culture and ideology from the source language and its representation in the target language by the translator in this sermon. The results of this research show that the translator considered the target language in translation and tried to make the source text fluent and the cultural and ideological elements comprehensible to the Iranian audience with effective strategies such as syntactic change and semantic expansion and change of perspective. to give On the other hand, avoid factors that have a negative impact on translation, such as inappropriate expression in the target text, maintaining the specific structure of the source text, changing the tone, and removing the meaning of the original text. Therefore, it can be said that Dashti's translation of Motaqin's sermon is a destination-oriented translation with relatively good quality.

Mutual duties and rights between people and sovereignty is one of the strategic and significant issues in the contemporary world. In the Islamic teachings especially Nahjulbalaghah it is not that the right is allocated to the ruler and government and on the other hand people only have duties and responsibilities. Rather the ruler has the significant duties even if he would be innocent. Among the strategic tasks of the ruler and leader are: Benevolence, Fair distribution of wealth and management of education system. These duties are, at the same time, the rights of the people and the ruler. On the other hand, people have duties in front of the Islamic ruler. In other words, these duties are rights of Religious Governance including loyalty to sovereignty, Support and response to demands of authority and etc. It is worthy to mention, the main aim of these rights and duties has been devised to provide the felicitous life for people in the world and hereafter.

Abstract:
Cognitive metaphor, known as a set of mappings from the source domain to the target one, is to a large extent the basis of our understanding of the world; Therefore, it always occurs in our daily life and is used in various issues such as society, politics, law, philosophy, psychology, mathematics, etc. Considering the high capacity that this type of metaphor has in generating ideas, hypotheses, and theories, as well as persuading the audience and shaping behavior, it has been used as an efficient tool in Islamic holy texts; because these texts have conceptualized divine teachings and abstract concepts creatively and uniquely humans the correct way of life; understanding, analyzing and also transferring these teachings and concepts is possible with the help of conceptual metaphor. According to what has been said, it is necessary to use the cognitive approach in analyzing the discourse of Islamic holy texts; For this reason, the present study uses cognitive metaphor to analyze the metaphor: "THE WORLD IS AN INFERIOR ODIOUS OBJECT" in order specify the nature of the mentioned metaphor and explain how we understand it, and the role of this metaphor in creating transformation in human thought and behavior. The most important achievement of this research is that if the various conceptual metaphors in the world domain, which are the product of the scholarly and artistic conceptualization of Imam Ali (PBUH), enter the conceptual system of humans, it can change their vision and consequently their perceptions and actions, and in fact, lead to a fundamental cultural revolution.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine Surah An-Nahl, which serves as an exemplary subject for exploring the rhetorical aspects of the Qur'an, within the context of the science of Ma'ani, one of the three significant branches of Balagha. Revealed during the Meccan period and consisting of 128 verses, Surah An-Nahl derives its name from the word "an-Nahl" (the bee) mentioned in the 68th verse. It is the sixteenth surah in the Quranic compilation and the seventieth in the order of revelation. The surah addresses fundamental religious themes such as monotheism, divinity, revelation, the hereafter, human creation, and the signs of Allah’s power. It also emphasizes the necessity of gratitude for the blessings bestowed by Allah. Furthermore, it underscores individual and societal responsibilities, such as justice, beneficence, repentance, adherence to lawful and unlawful commands, and keeping promises. From the perspective of Balagha, Surah An-Nahl possesses remarkably rich content. It incorporates styles related to the science of Ma'ani, such as brevity (ījāz), elaboration (itnāb), and grammatical shifts (iltifāt). Through analyses of rare words, the study explains the etymology and lexical meanings of terms and identifies their functions within the context of the verses. Ultimately, this study seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the miraculous nature of the Qur'an through the analysis of specific Ma'ani styles in Surah An-Nahl. Thus, the richness of Surah An-Nahl in terms of its literary, linguistic, and semantic aspects, along with the contributions of Ma'ani styles to the meanings and rulings of the verses, will be explored. Abstract:
The words ‘Wisdom’ and ‘Hikmat’ are generally used as synonyms, but in fact, they narrate different contents on epistemological grounds. In critical analysis, they both belong to epistemology, which is the branch of philosophy that deals with the questions relating to the sources, clarification of the meanings and definition of knowledge. On these grounds, this article proves that they are not the same things but they are two different stages of the same field of knowledge. Here the question of their status will be the focus on etymological, epistemological, theological, and philosophical basis. These fields are necessary to be consulted because etymology is the science that tells about how a word originates e.g. Hikmat or Hikmah and how it evolved in various languages and how the same meaning having different words took the present shape through ages chronologically. Epistemology, which deals with the contents and sources of knowledge e.g. what, is Hikmat? What are its sources? How it is related to sense organs and how it is related to insight instead of sensations and experimental knowledge? Theologically, how ‘Hikmat' claims to be a source of knowledge which has no roots in human experiences and how it can prove itself as above rationalism and finally, philosophy is the subject that has a great element of doubt in its investigations and it also claims to be a ‘lover of wisdom’ or Hikmat, then how can it synchronize ‘doubt’ and ‘wisdom’ or ‘Hikmat’.

Abstract:
Nahj al-Balaghah, as the most significant source after the Holy Qur’ān, has attracted human thought and provided direction in the realm of science. It is replete with rich literary topics that offer a conducive environment for research. Despite the extensive research conducted on Nahj al-Balaghah from various perspectives, less attention has been paid to specific topics within this valuable book. Considering the endless knowledge and artistry of the speaker of this book, and given the special place literature holds among Arabic speakers, Imam Ali (AS) has employed numerous literary beauties to introduce the world’s main identity. This paper attempts to analyze Imam Ali (AS)’s precise and insightful view of the world, which demonstrates robust thinking and can be examined from the aspects of form and content using a descriptive-analytical method. One of the findings of this research is that Amir al-Mu’minin Ali (A.S.) speaks according to the audience’s needs to reveal the world’s true face. Most of his words about the world are related to his sermons, where his physical presence and face-to-face interaction are more impactful.

Abstract:
Cognitive linguistics describes language as the perception of human cognitive abilities and views it as a tool for organizing, processing, and conveying information and also the intellectual representation of the universe. Since the basis of cognitive linguistics is semantics, metaphor is viewed as one of the most focal points of study in this approach, and attention to it can be considered as the most prominent development in cognitive linguistics, because cognitive metaphor is not just a figure of speech to decorate discourse, but it is the understanding and experience of an abstract conceptual field in the form of another conceptual domain that is usually more tangible.
Using a cognitive linguistic approach based on nine conceptual metaphor hypotheses, the present research studies the conceptual analysis of all the metaphors of the world in the field of animal in Nahj al-Balaghah.
The most significant findings of this study are:

Contrary to the belief of Kövecses excluding the personification only to giving human features to abstract concepts, there are metaphors where animal characteristics are given to non-human phenomena. Therefore, animism includes both personification and animalification.
Some of the animalistic features are linked with the abstract concept of the world, and this connection is linguistically unconventional. What improves such an unconventional company is the extension of meaning. This helps the mind to attribute some of the animal's characteristics to an abstract field that lacks those features based on several cognitive mappings.

Abstract:
Nahj ul Balagah, the seminal work of wisdom by Ali ibn Talib (Karm Allah Wajho)[i] comprises the sermons, letters and sayings, delivered by him on various occasions during his life till his death. Every piece of writing in this work is exponent of his wisdom and his scholarship. The objective of this article is to highlight the role of Hazrat Ali’s insight and wisdom in the history of theology and theosophy of Islamic history of thought. Moreover, the focus of this humble research is to bring into light the missing aspect of Hazrat Ali’s personality as Theologian and Theosophist along-with to reveal the significance of his sermons and saying in the hot debates of that time theological sects and schools of thought. All his sermons, sayings and letters had been collected (Sharif al-Radi, 970 –1015 AD) and named as Nahj ul Balagah. This book has been read, quoted and revered but it is tragic fact that it had neither been given proper place nor understood impartially. In the same manner, the author, Hazrat Ali (KAW) had been respected and remembered as valor, wise, generous and pious person but very little had been mentioned regarding his being as a Theologian and Theosophist. This research article would reveal the significance of this book, and its relevance regarding the theological or theosophical dimension of the problem of Muslim Theology and Theosophy.

Abstract:
Excessive consumption on a large scale in various affairs causes the waste of substantial material assets and sometimes even endangers the lives of human beings. This consumption leads to famine and the reduction of necessary materials for future generations. The wrong consumption patterns in Islamic society are undeniable, and their adverse consequences have exposed Islamic societies. However, one of Islam’s best accurate social-economical guidance is avoiding excessive consumption. This article attempts to clarify the Modification Consumption Patterns using the sayings of Imam-Ali (AS) in Nahj al-Balaghah. Regarding the revision of Hadiths and Quranic verses, the researchers can extract and conclude the basic consumption patterns and present them to the Islamic community. For Example, “Extravagance Consumption ruins the divine rewards.” Islam had warned the Islamic Community to avoid excessive consumption while using the pure resources on the earth. Holy Quran harshly condemned profanes and those who are abundantly excessive about any consumption on the earth. In Surah Araf, verse 31: “O Children of Adam! Wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink: But waste not by excess, for Allah, loveth not the wasters”. These patterns can be compared with other patterns in the Islamic community.

Ali, Aun Hasan. "The Canonization of Nahj al‑Balāgha between Najaf and Ḥilla: Sistani and the Iconic Authority of the Marājiʿ". Marjaʿiyya and Society: A special issue of the Journal of the Contemporary Study of Islam 2, № 1 (2021): 3–23. http://dx.doi.org/10.37264/jcsi.v2i1.45.

Abstract:
Despite the relatively narrow construction of their authority in substantive law, there is ample evidence from which to conclude that the marājiʿ wield authority in other realms too. While much of the scholarship on the marjaʿiyya has focused on their political authority in Muslim-majority societies, their status as cultural icons is arguably more important for understanding their global influence. This article examines how marājiʿ use their "iconic authority" to shape canons. In particular, it focuses on a recent statement by al-Sayyid ʿAlī al-Ḥusaynī al-Sīstānī that describes Nahj al-balāgha as an explanation of the meanings of the Quran. It is argued that, by seeking to organize and regulate reading practices, al-Sīstānī's statement contributes to the canonization of Nahj al-balāgha. To fully appreciate the significance of al-Sīstānī's statement, however, one needs to situate it within the history of the text. I argue that the School of Ḥilla is an excellent vantage point from which to view the history of the canonization of Nahj al-balaghah because it can be considered the formative period of Imāmī tradition in important respects. Evidence from the School of Ḥillah confirms that Nahj al-balāghah played a role in the organization and representation of Imāmī tradition, but there is little evidence of the notion that it is an explanation of the meanings of the Quran. Drawing upon J. Z. Smith's classic treatment of canon, I conclude that the novelty of this view is further evidence that Nahj al-balāgha is canonical.
