Gutshall, Scott T. "Monotonic and cyclic short-term performance of nailed and bolted timber connections." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50106.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of testing to determine the appropriateness of the seismic load duration factor and to investigate the possible effect of previous load history from cyclic loading on connection reserve capacity and ductility. The single shear nail and bolt connection types tested represent common connection geometries used in wood construction in the United States. The results of two methods of fully reversing cyclic loading of connections are presented. The first method was a load-controlled test with the applied cyclic loads acting at specified percentages above current nom

Abstract:
An integrated programme of experimental and analytical work was carried out to evaluate the nonlinear semi-rigid characteristics of timber connections using fully overlapping nails subjected to short duration lateral loading and moment. The investigation is part of a continuing programme of research at Napier University into the behaviour of timberjoints using fully overlapping nails as the connecting Z -1 mechanism. The effects of the factors and material properties that influence the behaviour of nailed joints were addressed in a structured and controlled way allowing semi-empirical models t

Abstract:
The purpose of this master thesis has been to investigate the possibility to increase the damping capacity of shear walls with the use of glue in combination with nails. It has been done with experiment and with FE-simulations. The first experimental part is tensile tests of four different glue types which have been analyzed to get material data. The second experimental part is analysis of glued-nail joint in shear test. FE-simulations of glued-nail joints are finally done in Abaqus/CAE. The experiments in shear tests of glued-nail joints showed that two glues failed and could not be used

Wood pallets are heavily used throughout the United States and the World to transport, store, and protect goods. During a lifecycle, pallets typically experience various stresses from warehouse storage racks, materials handling equipment, and floor stacking situations. The components within the pallet interact to withstand load and impact forces. Every year product damage and human injury/death result from improperly designed pallets, non-reliable packaging systems, and careless materials handling methods.

In use wood pallets are exposed to a variety of loads and support conditio

This diploma thesis deals with the numerical modeling of the nail joint of the timber roof structure and it is based on the already realized physical experiment. Totally twelve various solutions, where the isotropic and ortotropic characteristics of the spruce timber and steel components change, have been created. There was used structural timber of the strength class C24, glued laminated timber of the strength class GL24 and steel S235. Program Scia Engineer was used for the static analysis of the structure. There was made only linear calculation.

Abstract:
Dupla diplomação com a UTFPR - Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná
Timber joints are a key part of timber structures, and their performance is a major requisite to successful timber constructions. Among all the connection types, punched metal plate fasteners are the most economical and e cient, reasons why this connection dominates the prefabricated truss industry. However, the structural load bearing capacity of these timber connections is mechanically complex and di cult to analyse. Besides, the current standards oversimplify many current joint con gurations and don’t provide
