Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to determine the learners’ perceptions on the use of online resources at the Namibian College of Open Learning (NAMCOL) Yetu Yama Resource Center.Design/methodology/approachThis study used a mixed methods research approach which was also used by other researchers such as Hamutumwa (2014). It enabled the researchers to delve into the topic under study by conducting a survey using self-administered questionnaires to collect data from learners, and a semi-structured interview guide, to collect data from the Librarian, the Director and tutors. The target population for the study was Grade 12 distance learners registered with NAMCOL for the academic year 2016, librarians and tutors. Convenient sampling was used to select 200 Grade 12 distance NAMCOL learners: one Director, one Librarian and five tutors were purposeful selected as they manage the Yetu Yama Resource Centre. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to generate descriptive data, while qualitative data were manually analysed using content analysis. This approach enabled the researcher to identify key themes which emerged from the interviews.FindingsAlmost all the learners (159) opted for printed materials. The challenges experienced by learners included slow internet, as indicated by 78 (39 per cent); limited facilities, 60 (30 per cent); and inability to find relevant information, 46 (23 per cent), coupled with lack of proper guidance on the use of e-resources as indicated by 16 (8 per cent) learners.Research limitations/implicationsThis study was limited to Yetu Yama Resource Center. The results cannot be generalised to all distance learners in Namibia.Practical implicationsThe results of this study could guide librarians in Namibia when planning and/or upgrading e-resources.Social implicationsOnce the learners are equipped with the required skills, they will make optimum use of the e-resources which are provided by NAMCOL.Originality/valueThis is the first study to be conducted at NAMCOL, and it is hoped that the results will be applied to other tertiary institutions which offer distance education in Namibia.

Abstract:
The Namibian College of Open Learning (NAMCOL) conducted a dropout survey in order to determine why distance students studying with the College, drop out of the subjects they enrolled for. Information was collected from learners who dropped out of subjects they enrolled for, tutors and Head of Centres. Online and telephonic interviews were used for learners, while questionnaires in hard copies were distributed to the tutors and Head of Centres. The majority of the learners who responded to the questionnaire indicated that the learner support from the College was good and that the study materials were useful. Even so, most learners indicated that job commitments, financial issues and sickness were the main reasons why they dropped out of the subjects they enrolled for. The subject that had the highest dropout rate for both grade 10 and 12, were English. Other reasons given by tutors and head of centres as to why they think learners drop out of subjects include lack of motivation from learners, lack of competency in English and some learners find employment or register at private institutions, centres are far from the learners. Some of the recommendations given by tutors and head of centres to reduce dropouts the College should decentralise the centres, clear, persistent and continuous information regarding examination dates, collecting timetables and venues should be given.

Abstract. The mesoscale snow distribution over the Namco lake area of the Tibetan Plateau on October 2005 has been investigated in this paper. The control and sensitive experiments were conducted using Weather Research Model (WRF) with three nested grids that included a 1 km finest grid centered on the Namco station. Our simulation ran from 6 October through 10 October 2005, which was concurrent with long term meteorological observations. Evaluation against boundary layer meteorological tower measurements and flux observations showed that the model captured the observed 2 m temperature and 10 m winds reasonably well in the sensitive experiment. The results suggested that output snow depth maximum amounts from two simulated experiments were centered downwind shore of Namco lake. Modified surface parameters for example surface skin temperature on the lake help to increase simulated credibility.

Abstract:
Rice is a valuable agricultural crop that is used as food for more than half of the world's population. The development of highly productive varieties and hybrids with high product quality assumes the utilization of new initial material from different countries in the breeding process. The purpose of the current research was to conduct an ecological testing of the rice varieties from Uganda in the Proletarsky district of the Rostov region in Russia and use them in the breeding process. There were studied the Ugandan rice samples ‘Nerica 1’, ‘Nerica 4’, ‘Komboka’, ‘Wita 9’, ‘Namche 1’, ‘Namche 2’, ‘Namche 3’, ‘Namche 4’, ‘Namche 5’, ‘Namche 6’ (NaCRRI) in comparison with the Russian variety ‘Komandor’ (FSBSI “ARC “Donskoy”). The study of the Ugandan rice varieties according to a number of economically valuable traits and biological properties showed that the vegetation period from soil flooding to rice maturing took 100–113 days, the standard variety ‘Komandor’ needed 83 days. The varieties ‘Komboka’ and ‘Wita 9’ did not bear blossom. All samples had a short habit, with 63-95 cm of plant height. The long drooping panicles of 18.5–22.3 cm carried from 122 to 213 seeds. The caryopses were elongated, the length of the caryopses varied from 9.0 to 9.5 mm, and the width ranged from 2.7 to 3.1 mm. 1000 seed weight varied from 26 to 34 g, number of seeds per panicle ranged from 122 to 213 pieces. Genetic analysis of the second generation hybrids ‘Kontakt × Nerica 1’ and ‘Boyarin × Nerica 4’ showed different types of traits’ inheritance, from negative dominance (vegetation period) through the absence of dominance (caryopses size) to overdominance (plant height, seed weight per panicle and number of seeds per panicle).

Abstract:

Abstract:
Urinary Alzheimer-associated neural thread protein (AD7c-NTP) is a potential biomarker of Alzheimer disease (AD) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI). It is still unclear whether the urinary levels of AD7c-NTP are different between patients with amnestic MCI (aMCI) and nonamnestic MCI (naMCI). The present study aimed to explore the differences in urinary levels of AD7c-NTP between patients with aMCI and naMCI. Forty-six patients with MCI were divided into aMCI group (n = 23) and naMCI group (n = 23). The mean level of urinary AD7c-NTP in the aMCI group (32.75 ± 10.0 µg/mL) was significantly higher than that in the naMCI group (25.34 ± 9.0 µg/mL; P = .011). As far as we know, the present study is the first to show that individuals with aMCI have higher levels of urinary AD7c-NTP than those with naMCI, suggesting that urinary AD7c-NTP may be a potential biomarker to help identify patients with aMCI and naMCI.

Abstract:
The paper begins with the addition of some fundamental concepts used as a theoretical basis for the study of cultural exchanges such as the level of exchanges (strong / weak), the conditions for the openness level of a culture, the power structure of a culture (material power, mental power), etc. Together with the characteristics of the subject, the time and space of the Nambo culture, factual basis is the strength and characteristics of cultural exchanges of the three regions (of Vietnam). In the context of the period of cultural transition from Vietnam’s rural culture to urban culture, from agricultural culture to industrial culture, the Nambo culture has quite a few advantages. Cultural exchange in Nambo helps develop physical strength, especially in the field of economic culture and traffic culture; cultural exchange in Nambo also helps develop mental strength in the field of organizational culture, educational culture, communicative culture, behaving culture, etc. For some aspects, the Nambo culture can be considered the intermediary chain link between Vietnamese traditional culture and Western culture. In this sense, the Nambo culture and cultural exchange in Nambo have played the role of a key factor in promoting and enhancing the efficiency of the development and modernization of Vietnam's traditional culture.

Abstract:
The provision of school equivalency programme through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) has gained momentum in the 21st century through the establishment of open schools. Open schools has now become a model of choice for many young people and adults who do not want to pursue their secondary education journey through the conventional delivery system. Additionally, shrinking financial resources have made it impossible for governments especially in the developing world to expand education through the conventional system. Pityana (2007) claims that ODL is key in advancing the development agenda of many nations through programmes that accommodate the less privileged members of the society such as women, the unemployed, repeaters, out-of-school youth, disadvantaged and the displaced. Although open schools have made progress in increasing access, low throughput rates and high dropout rates remain the key challenges. The purpose of this study was therefore to explore the experiences and perceptions of learners when migrating from the conventional school system to the open and distance learning in general, and to Namibian College of Open Learning (NAMCOL) in particular. This study was driven by the assumption that change in the learning environment might be the most influential factor on learners’ ability to integrate into the new distance learning environment. The study mainly focused on the senior secondary (Grade 12) learners who transferred from the formal schools to NAMCOL to upgrade their grades. Moore’s (1883) theory of transactional distance and Tinto’s (1997a) theory of academic and social integration were used as the reference theoretical framework. The applicability of the two theories was assessed and compared with the findings of the study. A multi method research design was applied in data collection. The results of the study identified a gap between the learners’ expectations and the high ODL expectations and its demands. The learners in the study displayed a marginal understanding of the ODL mode of delivery. The study established certain factors that impede or accelerate the integration process and also identified technology mediated services as well as capacity building for staff as measures to facilitate learner integration in the ODL mode of delivery. The study reaffirms that meeting learners’ academic, social and psychological needs are important for successful learner integration. The findings have implications for policy makers, ODL practitioners and learners on the development of the most effective measures of increasing learner integration into open schools.
Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2017.
Education Management and Policy Studies
PhD
Unrestricted

Abstract:
This research study focused on the issue of access to flexible learning and the use of technology (radio and TV) to assist in the learning process. The study was aimed at measuring the influence of these technology services among grade 12 learners enrolled on distance mode at Namibia College of Open Learning (NAMCOL). The majority of distance education systems around the world have the same general structure of guiding students, which are based primarily on student-centered learning that demands a learner to work independently. Regular lecturing facilities for distance learners are only possible in scheduled workshops at study centers. These provisions are however, inconvenient since most distance learners are working people, as well as inadequate to provide the necessary educational guidance to distance learners. In situations where regular interaction between teacher and student is limited or not possible, the media plays a vital role in providing educational assistance to these learners. NAMCOL, as an institution, has embraced the concept of utilizing media to assist distance learners with programs such as Edu TV and Radio Programmes as well as Online resources. Self-directed learning theories and Malcolm Knowles's theory of Andragogy were used as the theoretical frameworks for the study. In exploring access and influence of Edu TV and radio program on the learner's self-directed learning among the grade 12 learners enrolled at distance mode at Namibian College of Open Learning (NAMCOL), the researcher employed several research strategies to measure the influence that flexible programs have on learners. The research strategies employed in the study included questionnaires and interviews, which were used to yield both qualitative and quantitative research data. The main findings of the study were that the flexible learning policy implemented by NAMCOL is proving successful in affording distance learners access to Edu TV and radio program services. All participants indicated that the lessons were informative. Furthermore, it helps learners to assume responsibility for their learning. However, additional efforts from all stakeholders are required to keep up with the ever-expanding demand for ODL platforms. The study further revealed that implementing appropriate Andragogy fostered self-directed learning. In light of the findings of the research and the Andragogy applied, even though learners have access to the Edu programs, the lack of physical and appropriate technologies can impact negatively. For example, you can be self-directed, but if there are physical constraints and challenges in the pedagogy, the learners are demotivated to be self-directed.

Full text
Abstract:
New applications of the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating were carried out with the aim of understanding late Quaternary activities for the Tibetan Plateau. This included studying the slip rate of the Altyn Tagh Fault, northeast Tibetan Plateau, and revealing the environmental changes derived from large inland lake’s evolution, central south Tibet. Two deflected streams across the Altyn Tagh Fault close to Aksay (39°24.572’N, 94°16.012’E) were investigated. Geomorphological analysis suggests that loess covering deflected stream banks has recorded past faulting events. A conceptual model is proposed illustrating the relationship. OSL dating of sixteen loess samples at both streams support the model, suggesting the loess is deposited episodically after fault strikes and subsequent channel wall refreshment. The age and offset indicate a slip rate of 11 ±2 mm/yr for this part of the Altyn Tagh Fault. Another river section near Aksay was also investigated for the slip rate information. Two risers between three terraces are clearly offset; OSL dating of loess covering terrace surfaces yielded terrace ages. Using the upper-terrace age to represent riser displacement duration, the rate is estimated to be 12 ±1 mm/yr. The result suggests that using upper terrace is more suitable in this region. Notably, though, the slow rate is at odds with proposals that assume high-speed extrusion (~23 mm/year) of the Tibetan Plateau being accommodated by the Altyn Tagh Fault. Palaeo-shorelines around the third largest lake in Tibet, Zhari Namco, were for the first time systematically investigated using OSL dating. Twenty-two sediment samples from eleven shorelines indicate that the water level has dropped ~128 m and the lake has undergone stepwise shrinkage since 8.2 ka. Digital elevation model calculation indicates the lake has shrunk from 4605 km2 in size at 8.2 ka to 996 km2 at present, which is equivalent to ~300 km3 of water. This implies a significant reduction in precipitation over the past 8.2 ka, a result of weakening Indian Monsoon or a shift of monsoon circulation path. The result is consistent with other lake-core, ice-core climate proxies and solar insolation changes, implying the dominance of a weakening Indian Monsoon over central Tibet in the Holocene. Using the elevation of the highest shoreline of the four largest lakes in Tibet, the early Holocene Pan-lake hypothesis is proposed for the central Tibet. In addition to these applications of OSL dating, technical studies on sensitivity changes and residual doses have been carried out for potassium rich feldspar (K-feldspar). Recent development of infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) signals from K-feldspar has shown great potential for extending the datable range for OSL dating. Sensitivity changes and residual doses of post-IR IRSL and multi-elevated -temperature post-IR IRSL protocols for K-feldspar were studied. A sensitivity decrease is observed after adopting a high temperature IRSL. IRSL signals stimulated at high temperature are found to contain large residual doses. The residual dose rises with stimulation time, suggesting that the initial part of IRSL signals contains more easy-to-bleach signals comparing with the later part.
published_or_final_version
Earth Sciences
Doctoral
Doctor of Philosophy

Manau jei interjere nebus justi emocijos, jis taps formalus. Šiame interjere dominuoja natūralios medžiagos, žemės spalvų koloritas. Greta subtilių rudų, pilkų, smėlio ir samanų atspalvių intuityviai atsirado juoda spalva kuri tapo puikia atsvara pasteliniams tonams, savotišku karkasu, laikančiu spalvinę pusiausvyrą. Ahmed, Mohammad Faruque. "Simulating and assessing salinisation in the lower Namoi Valley." University of Sydney. Land Water and Crop Sciences, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/811.

Full text
Abstract:
Dryland salinity is increasing in the upper catchments of central and northern New South Wales, Australia. Consequently, salts may be exported downstream, which could adversely affect cotton irrigated-farming systems. In order to assess the potential threat of salinity a simple salt balance model based on progressively saline water (i.e., ECiw 0.4, 1.5, 4.0 and 9.0 dS/m) was used to simulate the potential impact of salinisation due to the farming systems. The study was carried out in the lower Namoi valley of northern New South Wales, Australia. A comparison has been made of the various non-linear techniques (indicator kriging, multiple indicator kriging and disjunctive kriging) to determine an optimal simulation method for the risk assessment. The simulation results indicate that potential salinisation due to application of the water currently used for irrigation (ECiw) is minimal and may not pose any problems to sustainability of irrigated agriculture. The same results were obtained by simulation based on irrigation using slightly more saline water (ECiw 1.4 dS/m). However, simulations based on irrigation using water of even lower quality (ECiw of 4 and 9.0 dS/m), shows potential high salinisation, which will require management inputs for sustainable cropping systems, especially legumes and wheat, which are used extensively in rotation with cotton. Disjunctive kriging was the best simulation method, as it produced fewer misclassifications in comparison with multiple-indicator kriging and indicator kriging. This study thus demonstrates that we can predict the salinity risk due to application of irrigation water of lower quality than that of the current water used. In addition, the results suggest here problems of excessive deep drainage and inefficient use of water might be a problem. The second part of this thesis deals with soil information required at the field scale for management practices particularly in areas where deep drainage is large. Unfortunately, traditional methods of soil inventory at the field level involve the design and adoption of sampling regimes and laboratory analysis that are time-consuming and costly. Because of this more often than not only limited data are collected. In areas where soil salinity is prevalent, detailed quantitative information for determining its cause is required to prescribe management solutions. This part deals with the description of a Mobile Electromagnetic Sensing System (MESS) and its application in an irrigated-cotton field suspected of exhibiting soil salinity. The field is within the study area of part one of this thesis-located about 2 km south west of Wee Waa. The EM38 and EM31 (ECa) data provide information, which was used in deciding where soil sample sites could be located in the field. The ECa data measured by the EM38 instrument was highly correlated with the effective cation exchange capacity. This relationship can be explained by soil mineralogy. Using different soil chemical properties (i.e. ESP and Ca/Mg ratio) a detailed transect study was undertaken to measure soil salinity adjoining the water storage. It is concluded that the most appropriate management option to remediation of the problem would be to excavate the soil directly beneath the storage floor where leakage is suspected. It is recommended that the dam not be enlarged from its current size owing to the unfavourable soil mineralogy (i.e. kaolin/illite) located in the area where it is located.

Šiame darbe tiriamos priemonės, skirtos namo inžinerinių mazgų ir sistemų automatizavimui, ir centralizuotam valdymui. Analizės dalyje pateikiama šiuo metu siūlomų įsigyti protingų namų sistemų, pastato valdymo ir automatizavimo sistemų apžvalga ir jose naudojamų standartų apžvalga ir trūkumai ir sistemų integracijos galimybės. Specifikacijoje apibrėžiamos protingo namo sistemos atliekamos funkcijos bei vartotojo atliekamos funkcijos.
The technologies are developing rapidly; however, an important issue, i.e. centralized control of home systems, still remains. This paper presents an analysis on of the tools designed for the automation of the home engineering services and systems, and centralized control. The analytical part is focused on reviewing the currently available smart home systems, building control and automation systems, the standards employed in such systems, their drawbacks and system integration possibilities. The specification defines the functions of the smart home systems and those of their users. The functional requirements of the system are visualized by employing UML use case diagrams. Also, non-functional requirements that the system must comply with to be safe and to operate adequately are presented. The design part of the paper presents the structure of a designed smart home system, the software for the smart home system server, controller, and remote control, and the computer remote control software. The testing part of the paper includes the testing of the software prototype which is comprised of both separate subsystem and connected subsystem testing. Also, the testing results are provided. The research part is focused on studying the energy consumed during non-working time by the computers of a company located in a four-storey building. Also, an attempt is made to apply the designed smart home system for the company’s computer control, i.e. to reduce the energy consumed by the... [to full text]

Abstract:
Administration of flat blocks in Lithuania is a relevant issue. Recently on the initiative of the authorities’ flat block communities or their hired housekeeping companies started to take care of the management and upkeep of flat blocks. Management of flat blocks consists of many parts that must be performed by a company which maintains the building, so it has to administrate and store the data. Recently in Lithuania, especially in greater cities, more and more flat blocks are built, so the quantity of flat block communities increases automatically. The greater quantity of flat block communities has increased the demand to use that data effectively. Do flat block communities in Lithuania have and use special software for data administrating? Is this software available in the market? What kind of data is stored and administrated by flat block communities? In order to get an answer to these questions, the objectives of the project work were set as follows: * To investigate what kind of information is stored and administrated by the flat block communities; * To investigate what kind of software is currently used by the flat block communities; * To investigate which software products are available in the market and are they expedient in using them to administrate the data of flat block community; * To evaluate whether it is expedient to develop an information system which could help to administrate the data of flat block communities. After qualitative analysis it was concluded... [to full text]
