"Using the Package to Influence Consumers' Choice of Brand : A Study on the Effect of Package Communication Claims on Propensity to Switch Brand." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-226987.

Abstract:
As consumers walk through the grocery store they encounter a vast range of products. In this setting information printed on food packages play a role in consumer decision making. One way of influencing consumer behaviour is by using package panels where detailed communication claims can be placed. This study investigates the effect of package communication claims on propensity to switch brand through quantitative research design. Variations among consumer of private label brands versus consumers of name brands are also investigated. Results show that package communication claims have an effect on consumer propensity to switch brand, however there are differences depending on type of claims. Environmental packaging claims have a negative effect on propensity to switch while nutritional claims do not have a significant effect. Production process claims and product origin claims both have a positive effect on consumer propensity to switch and is thus more favourable for brands to use. Furthermore, package communication claims have a larger positive effect on propensity to switch among consumers of private label brands than among consumers of name brands. Since there is a lack of research in the area of package communication this thesis contribute by proving that packages have an effect on consumer behaviour and argues for further research in this area.

Abstract:
Comparative advertising is widely used in the U.S and much remains to be learnt about when comparative advertising is used with the two forms of verbal claim; factual and evaluative claim. An experimental design with the 2 forms of verbal content (factual vs evaluative) and the two forms of comparative advertisements (direct vs indirect) were examined to identify the form of verbal content and comparison that would be most persuasive. In measuring the persuasiveness, attitude towards the brand and purchase intention were included as dependable variables. Results show that there was no significant difference between the two types of verbal content and the two types of comparisons which indicate that any forms of verbal content under any form of comparative advertisements is equally persuasive.

Söderlund, Matias. "Claim management in EPC-Projects : A case study of claim causes and claim management during plant installation." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för teknikvetenskaper, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-355309.

Full text
Abstract:
When several parties are involved in a construction project are conflicts inevitable, and when one party feel that another party are not following their work according to the agreed contract, can they issue a claim. Claim management and causes of claims has been addressed by previous research, but there is lack of attention to study claim management specifically in EPC-projects. The purpose of this thesis is to shed some light on claim management and identify cause of change claims, specifically in the context of EPC-projects. A case study was conducted within an organisation that executes complex plant EPC-projects, where several parties are involved. This thesis has applied tools of root cause analysis in order to identify the causes of change claims, and conducted focus groups and semi-structured interviews to better understand problems associated with claim management and how the relationship between two parties affects claims. The thesis concludes that the most common root causes to sub-contractor change claims are related to design where not enough information for design input has been provided, or related to installation where sub-contractors issue change claims in order to fix conflicts caused by themselves. Other major root causes are related to insufficient instructions provided by the principal organisation or requests of changes by one party. The thesis also concludes that claims during plant installation are avoided since more time is required for settling an official claim. Poor documentation is a major reason why the settlement of official claims requires more time. Further does this thesis conclude that the relationship between two parties does not affect claims, and in contrast might the relationship benefit from claims if causes are treated properly.

A esta técnica é dado o nome de OCD, isto é, The One-Year Claim Development.
This report will arrive at a conclusion by explaining to the reader the basic reasoning behind splitting large claims as well as the most common methods for BI reserving. It is assumed that the reader has fundamental understanding of the insurance industry, motor insurance and BI, and the reserving process. It is necessary to explain the practices used by Portugal and other Liberty International countries to form an opinion of those practices by applying them to Portugal's claim information. Furthermore, the question of whether to split large claims or not will be thoroughly evaluated. Finally, there will be an aggregate suggestion as to the best splitting practice and reserving methodology specific for Liberty Seguros Portugal. To do this, several shocked scenarios will be simulated. Additional large claims will be introduced to the total incurred claims triangle and large claim count triangles. The one-year claim development (OCD) will then be compared using different reserving methodologies, the Chain Ladder Method, Cape Cod Method, and Benktander Method. The one-year claim development is measured by the change in the aggregate reserve ultimate between 2014 and 2015 (excluding the 2015 cohort for which no aggregate reserve ultimate was available in 2014). The standard deviation of each method's one-year uncertainty will be calculated by computing the OCD of each method under the three shocked scenarios. The technique that yields the lowest average of standard deviations, called the one-year sensitivity measure by the author, will be selected as the best approach for handling large claims.

Brock, Penohole. "Politics of reparations: unravelling the power relations in the Herero/Nama genocide reparations claims." Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31354.

Full text
Abstract:
The Herero/Nama Genocide (1904-1908) under German colonialism in Namibia is the first genocide of the twentieth century and has stirred debates around reparations for historical injustices. Reparative Justice has evolved into a victim-centric pillar of justice, in which perpetrators are legally and morally obligated to pay reparations in its several forms to its victims, including material and symbolic reparations. This thesis is a case study of reparations claims for historical injustices, specifically colonial genocide and explores such claims as a political process. Firstly, defining victims of genocide is a political process in which colonial atrocities have been blanketed by a lawless cover, previously ignoring the rights of the former colonised. The acknowledgement of genocide victims is a not only a necessary step to claiming reparations, but is part of Reparative Justice in which the perpetrator recognises its victims, offers a formal apology and make amends to the victims’ satisfaction. The acknowledgement of the Herero and Nama as victims of genocide has taken over a century for the German government to admit. Secondly, reparations claims is a political process in which requests are demanded and/or negotiated between perpetrator and victim. Germany’s previous foreign policy avoided terms such as 'genocide’ and 'reparations’, which has been a form of colonial amnesia. Namibian actors cannot easily forget the weight of the genocide and have had to negotiate and demand overdue justice in the face of colonial amnesia. Victim groups often do not speak with one voice, as noted in the Herero group, which is divided into general two camps: the Riruako group and the Maherero group. Under Paramount Chief Riruako, and his successor Rukoro, the Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) have made several reparations claims to Germany over the last three decades. The Namibian government has previously played an unsupportive role, due to Germany’s annual development aid, which has undermined the position of the Riruako group. However, Riruako’s Motion on the Ovaherero Genocide in 2006, was unanimously passed and requested that the Namibian government facilitates negotiations between Germany and representatives of the affected communities. The two governments have since entered formal negotiations on how to address the past, however this has been resented by the OTA and some reparations organisations, who argue that the Namibian government have taken the lead on negotiations, rather than facilitate them. Those participating in government negotiations are the Maherero group, and those who have refused to join is the Riruako group, who have lodged a lawsuit in 2017 against the German government for reparations. In 2015, the German government admitted that its shared history with Namibia involved genocide. However, this acknowledgement has transferred limited power to the Namibian actors who continue to be undermined as 'equal’ counterparts to the German government. The German government continue to negotiate on their terms of redress, and have claimed state immunity towards the lawsuit. Therefore, there are small traces of colonial amnesia in Germany’s conduct despite its recent change in foreign policy.

Abstract:
Based on a social constructivist, pragmatic cognitive understanding of naming, the study investigates the discriminatory hegemonic presuppositions and perceptions that are interpellated with personal names in Germany and Sweden. The critical lens of Black Feminist, Postcolonial, Postmigrant, Critical Trans and Disability Studies is applied in order to deconstruct current and past hegemonic naming norms. By regarding the un/intelligibility of names as constituted by intersecting power relations, racism_genderism_ableism_migratism_ classism, the dispositive model helps to identify what personal names and naming practices are made un/thinkable. Accustoming is introduced as an analytic tool to understand how hegemonic knowledge on naming is acquired and internalized in a structuralist and essentializing way. The analysis of administrative and legislative discourses demonstrates how hegemonic naming norms have been historically and institutionally accustomed. That a personal name is not only determined by institutional but also by individual decision-making is illustrated on the example of the child’s well-being, a commonly used argument for name decisions at registry offices. The feel for language as another norm to justify de_perceived name discrimination is analyzed against the background of how sprachgefühl as an emotive concept interpellates nationalist images of the self and the Other. The final chapter addresses the consequences of discriminatory naming practices: the definition and denial of personhood. The study concludes with a collection of empowering interventions in discriminatory naming practices and recommendations for a contra_ discriminatory anti-structuralist perception of personal names. By employing a transdisciplinary approach, the study illustrates how disciplinary boundaries are transgressed and how different discourse areas and material that traditionally are investigated in law, history, linguistics and literature is integrated in Gender Studies research.

Abstract:
Her Name Was is an examination of the oppression of transgender people in a society that is built on the nominalization of cisgender people, those who gender matchers their sex assigned at birth, and how this oppression lends itself to violence. In the summer of 2015, the body of Shade Schuler, an African American transgender woman, was found in a field outside of Dallas, Texas. Ms. Shade is part of an alarming epidemic of escalating levels of targeted violence against the transgender community. This documentary pulls back the curtain as it captures the feelings and struggles of the transgender community as they attempt to navigate and survive in a cis dominating society.

Full text
Abstract:
Existing credibility models have mostly allowed for one source of claim dependence only, that across time for an individual insured risk or a group of homogeneous insured risks. Numerous circumstances demonstrate that this may be inadequate and insufficient. In this dissertation, we developed a two-level common effects model, based loosely on the Bayesian model, which allows for two possible sources of dependence, that across time for the same individual risk and that between risks. For the case of Normal common effects, we are able to derive explicit formulas for the credibility premium. This takes the intuitive form of a weighted average between the individual risk's claims experience, the group's claims experience and the prior mean. We also consider the use of copulas, a tool widely used in other areas of work involving dependence, in constructing credibility premiums. Specifically, we utilise copulas to model the dependence across time for an individual risk or group of homogeneous risks. We develop the construction with several well-known families of copulas and are able to derive explicit formulas for their respective conditional expectations. Whilst some recent work has been done on constructing credibility models with copulas, explicit formulas for the conditional expectations have rarely been made available. Finally, we calibrate these copula credibility models using a real data set. This data set relates to the claims experience of workers' compensation insurance by occupation over a 7-year period for a particular state in the United States. Our results show that for each occupation, claims dependence across time is indeed present. Amongst the copulas considered in our empirical analysis, the Cook-Johnson copula model is found to be the best fit for the data set used. The calibrated copula models are then used for prediction of the next period's claims. We found that the Cook-Johnson copula model gives superior predictions. Furthermore, this calibration exercise allowed us to uncover the importance of examining the nature of the data and comparing it with the characteristics of the copulas we are calibrating to.

Chen, Huijun. "Automobile insurance claim reserve modeling." Thesis, McGill University, 2013. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=119758.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes a model for predicting individual claim losses and estimating the capital reserve for the automobile portfolio of a large Canadian insurance company. Depending on the nature of a claim, its settlement can involve medical costs, rehabilitation costs, income compensation costs, optional coverage costs, and even death benefit coverage. Any combination of these costs can occur, and the dependence between them must be accounted for. To this end, a two-level hierarchical structure is adopted. First, a multinomial logistic model is used to predict the combination of costs associated to a claim. The claim severity is then modeled as a function of this composition. A Log-Normal model is used to predict different types of loss; claimant information, accident information, medical and legal report information serve as explanatory variables. The dependence between medical, rehabilitation and income loss is characterized by a Gumbel copula. A Bayesian framework with Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling is adopted to estimate jointly the copula regression model parameters. Simulations are carried out to obtain prediction of individual loss, the distribution of total portfolio loss and the capital reserve.

Abstract:

This pre-study explores how the process of translating from English to Chinese may distort intended brand name messages, using Oriflame as a case study. The findings show that the brand name had a tendency to be perceived as phonetic rather than phonosemantic and that the character combination was perceived to make no clear sense. The study identified these as two main reasons to why Oriflame’s intended brand name messages did not get through.

The Cue Utilization Theory establishes that all products are made of multiples cues that may be seen as surrogates for the intangible attributes that make up any given product. However, the results of many years of research have yet yielded little consensus as to the impact generated by the use of such cues. This research aims to contribute to the discussion about the importance of intrinsic cues by investigating the effects that the use of product cues that confirm the product claim may have on Claim Credibility (measured through Ad Credibility), and also on consumers’ Purchase Intention and Perceived Risk toward the product. An experiment was designed to test such effects and the results suggest the effects of the use of Claim Confirming Product Cues depend on consumer’s level of awareness about such cue, and that when consumers are aware of it, Ad Credibility and Purchase Intention increase, as Perceived Risk decreases. Such results may have implications to academicians and practitioners, as well as may provide insights for future research.

Abstract:
Researchers writing scientific articles summarize their work in the abstracts mentioning the final outcome of their study. Argumentation mining can be used to extract the claim of the researchers as well as the evidence that could support their claim. The rapid growth of scientific articles demands automated tools that could help in the detection and evaluation of the scientific claims’ veracity. However, there are neither a lot of studies focusing on claim identification and verification neither a lot of annotated corpora available to effectively train deep learning models. For this reason, we annotated two argument mining corpora and perform several experiments with state-of-the-art BERT-based models aiming to identify and verify scientific claims. We find that using SciBERT provides optimal results regardless of the dataset. Furthermore, increasing the amount of training data can improve the performance of every model we used. These findings highlight the need for large-scale argument mining corpora, as well as domain-specific pre-trained models.

Abstract:
This collection of loosely interlinked short stories is a “book of imaginary beings”. It draws its influence from amaXhosa history, religion and mythology. Written in a fluid blend of isiXhosa and English, the stories make use of innovative forms and an inventive, pared-down language to create new and strange perspectives on our past, present and future. Ranging in length from brief mini-sagas to longer vignettes, the collection touches on such diverse subjects as the lore and superstitions surrounding the mythical being of tokoloshe, sorcery in the black community, and other fantastical elements of amaXhosa folklore. Literary influences include the Syrian writer Osama Olamar, whose writing about inanimate and everyday objects is both interesting and rare; Amos Tutuola, whose appropriation of Yoruba mythology I have learned much from; the Argentinian writer Julio Cortazar who has the facility to articulate the fantastical in a straightforward narrative; and Taban Lo Liyong, the Ugandan writer, whose fabulist work has served as stimulus for many of these stories.

Goldson, Annie. "A claim to truth: documentary, politics, production." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/1246.

Full text
Abstract:
The following thesis examines how documentary texts, in particular those that are associated with the tradition of political documentary, negotiate their way into being. For this purpose, I use a series of documentary case studies, each one structured around a work of my own. The five documentaries I examine were made through the decade 1990-2000 and, although these works address a range of specific cultural and political issues, they were produced either out of the US or New Zealand, the two countries within which I have lived while a documentary maker. My methodological approach is two-fold. First, I place each documentary within a framework designed by Bill Nichols as a way of defining documentary. Nichols, a major presence in the field of documentary studies, looks at documentary as constructed through a matrix of factors: the interplay of possible documentary modes and styles, pressures brought to bear through the institutional context surrounding documentary production, such as funding and distribution, the expectations of the genres' audiences, and the dialogue and influences generated by a community of documentary practitioners and their films and videos. In following Nichols' model, I offer up a modal and textual analysis for each of my own works cited, and examine, through a mixture of anecdote and theory, how funders, distributors, audiences and my fellow makers shaped my documentaries. In carrying out this examination, I also highlight certain debates that raged through the decade, particularly around documentary realism and identity politics, that were to have considerable impact on my work. My second methodological approach is to situate each work within a history of "political documentary". In Chapter One of this thesis I have attempted to categorize the various formulations of the sub-genre, which have developed since the inception of film over a century ago. In the ensuing chapters I examine how each of my documentaries draws on that history. My own body of works of course was produced in a relatively short period, but even within this time the historical changes the world has undergone are immense. Documentary is ever sensitive to its context and I chart the impact of political change on the texts being scrutinized. Although the focus, my own work, may appear narrow, the thesis draws on the tradition of participant observation and seeks, by analyzing the complexities of production within a series of case Studies, to cast light on contemporary documentary practice generally.

This dissertation develops an interpretation of Martin Heidegger's philosophical project in On the Way to Language and some of his earlier works that pave the way for this text and offers criticism of Heidegger's project in light of this interpretation. On the Way to Language stands apart from most twentieth century philosophy in arguing that, although human beings are within language in one sense, our relationship to language is nevertheless an estranged one. Heidegger often describes this condition as "lacking the word for the word." Because we are constantly speaking, we rarely if ever stop to wonder about the nature of language itself. Heidegger calls this our "entanglement" within language, a concept rooted in Being and Time 's exposition of the human being's thrownness. Read in terms of language, thrownness describes how we inherit concepts and find ourselves entangled in words prior to our reflection upon them. Heidegger presents what motivates us to bring the word to word in two ways. First, this need is rooted in the human being's fundamental structure of thrownness. Second, the need makes itself manifest through translation. My reading expands upon these two explanations of how we come to experience this entanglement, arguing that everyday communication regularly offers such experiences and demands that we modify, therefore temporarily distancing ourselves from, given language inheritances. The dissertation employs three other theorists, Roman Jakobson, Judith Butler, and Julia Kristeva, to flesh out how this need naturally arises in ordinary language development. Though he underestimates the extent to which everyday communicative situations require ongoing transformations of ordinary language, Heidegger nevertheless considers social encounters to be an important vehicle for language transformation. In this way, the goal of bringing our thrownness into language to word is not to disentangle ourselves from social relations, as some commentators have suggested. The last chapter shows how Paul Celan's poetics, in its inheritance of Heidegger's project, expands upon the role of social relations in language entanglement.

Estimating unpaid liabilities for insurance companies is an extremely important aspect of insurance operations. Consistent underestimation can result in companies requiring more reserves which can lead to lower profits, downgraded credit ratings, and in the worst case scenarios, insurance company insolvency. Consistent overestimation can lead to inefficient capital allocation and a higher overall cost of capital. Due to the importance of these estimates and the variability of these unpaid liabilities, a multitude of methods have been developed to estimate these amounts. This paper compares several actuarial and statistical methods to determine which are relatively better at producing accurate estimates of unpaid liabilities. To begin, the Chain Ladder Method is introduced for those unfamiliar with it. Then a presentation of several Generalized Linear Model (GLM) methods, various Generalized Additive Model (GAM) methods, the Bornhuetter-Ferguson Method, and a Bayesian method that link the Chain Ladder and Bornhuetter-Ferguson methods together are introduced, with all of these methods being in some way connected to the Chain Ladder Method. Historical data from multiple lines of business compiled by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners is used to compare the methods across different loss functions to gain insight as to which methods produce estimates with the minimum loss and to gain a better understanding of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the methods.
The following work was carried out during an internship placement at If Industrial P&C Insurance in Stockholm, Sweden. This report highlights and discusses some of the differences between Industrial and Private insurance and walks through the “Normal Year Analysis”-procedure. The analysis assesses the claims data with the goal of projecting the losses one year into the future. Collective Risk Theory and Maximum Likelihood Estimation is used to obtain an estimate of the severity of the claims. In addition, the reserves are estimated, using the Chain-ladder method. The final section of the report describes a sensitivity analysis of a model for the Claims Adjustment Reserves. This analysis shows the impact of introducing two new parameters, which accounts for the already developed part of the open claims.

In a book, I have gathered 2 years of research on the heart symbol in the context of social media and the responsibility of Facebook Inc. in the propagation of hate speech. In parallel, new far-right parties such as Alternativ för Sverige use the heart symbol as a logo. I question the benefits of a rising discourse of love in nationalist propaganda, often hiding racist and sexist ideologies. This research is accompanied by a music video: six women are reading a spoken-word piece on the sexualisation of the female body and the idealisation of a nation-state. This work is entrenched in my own experiences and those of my friends. I composed the music and recorded our voices, all of us, speaking with different accents, witness of our current history of migrations.

This study discusses queer theory as regards the portrayal of Orlando in Virginia Woolf's novel, Orlando: A Biography. The character is first analyzed in light of the intersections between gender, race, class, and nation, and subsequently in terms of the poetic persona, understood from both liberal and radical perspectives. The findings show that the character can be understood to destabilize gender fixity in the construction of a poetic persona, which confirms the tentative hypothesis. Findings also show that there is a conflict in the novel as it presents at the same time a transgressive text and a normatizing subtext, a conflict that must be criticized for its implications in cultural studies regarding queer theories, gender studies, and emancipatory politics.

The motif of the doppelgänger has been present in literature and the visual arts, but also, more or less concealed, in music, from classical antiquity until today and may manifest itself in the most various forms, dependent on genre, epoch, and culture. This has led criticism to consider the motif of the doppelgänger as a genre in its own right and to propose, especially during the last years, numerous classifications of the ways in which this psychological and anthropological phenomenon is treated in the arts. In the present study I have concentrated my attention on creations in which the doppelgänger represents the disturbing aspects of the hero’s ego. This motif was especially prominent in German late romanticism and has considerably spread during the last decades in cinematography and in fantastic literature. Though there exists a large amount of criticism on the motif of the doppelgänger, what has hardly been analyzed up to now is the role of the characters’ and their doppelgängers’ names. Therefore the aim of my study was to exemplify by means of numerous examples from antiquity until present times the role the proper name has played in literature and other arts dedicated to the theme of the doppelgänger.

ABSTRACT: Internet is the largest network deployed worldwide but besides that it’s also and essentially a way of accessing and distributing knowledge and a way to to interact with services. By using the IP routing protocol it’s possible to address and communicate with other persons, services, hosts or network enabled devices. An usual way for establishing a dialogue between internet endpoints is based on the TCP protocol, permitting a bidirectional, reliable and fault-tolerant data exchange. In TCP a service is identified by an associated port number which by itself has some less positive consequences. The obvious one consists on guessing which services are available by find out the available port numbers (port scanning) so that attacks on service vulnerabilities can take place. The purpose of this thesis is to extend the current concept used for addressing TCP services by associating them with names, or simply to provide TCP an in-band name resolution. The connection establishment phase, three-way handshake, can be improved in order to support simple name resolution mechanisms or even complex authentication. Security aspects towards avoiding attacks was a major concern that is present in the foundations of the proposed architecture. The name resolution model can be integrated with several mechanisms for authentication/validation, implemented as logic defined within domains of interpretation (DOI). DOIs allow a flexible and extensible way for adding those mechanisms to the connection establishment procedures of TCP.

ABSTRACT: The scientific achievements coming from molecular biology depend greatly on the capability of computational applications to analyze the laboratorial results. A comprehensive analysis of an experiment requires, typically, the simultaneous study of the obtained results with data that is available from distinct public databases. Being able to provide a unified view of this data has been a fundamental problem in database research since the dawn of Bioinformatics. This dissertation introduces GeNS, a hybrid data warehouse that presents a simple, yet innovative approach to address several biological data integration issues.

Coutts, Joshua John Field. "'My Father's Name' : the significance and impetus of the Divine Name in the Fourth Gospel." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/22024.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the distinctive features of the Fourth Gospel is the emphasis placed on the divine name (ὄνομα). The name occurs eight times (5.43; 10.25; 12.13, 28; 17.6, 11-12, 26), in key passages and in striking expressions such as “I have made known your name” (17.6) and “your name, which you gave me” (17.11). This thesis uses historical-critical methodology in a close reading of the Fourth Gospel to determine why John is so attracted to the name category. It is argued that, for John, the divine name was fundamentally an eschatological category with a built-in duality or “associative” significance, which he derives primarily from his reading of Isaiah. It is plausible that Isaiah was the primary impetus for John’s interest in the divine name, because name language is bound up with the “I am” expression and glory language in Isaiah— both of which more clearly underlie John’s “I am” sayings and glory motif. Furthermore, the significance of the name in Isaiah as the object of eschatological expectation (Isa 52.6), and as a concept by which God is associated with his Servant, attracted John to the name category as ideal for his nuanced presentation of Jesus. In John’s use of the name category, it is possible to distinguish the question of significance from that of referent, meaning, and function. This, in turn, facilitates a clear evaluation of possible catalysts for John’s name concept. It is demonstrated that a variety of Jewish and Christian background influences contributed to John’s name concept at the level of referent, meaning, and function. However, the eschatological and associative significance of the name in the Fourth Gospel is particularly indebted to the name concept in Isaiah. This is significant, in part, because Isaiah places such emphasis on the exclusivity of God. It may be that a zeal for God’s exclusivity had generated accusations against the community of believers known to John, that, by their allegiance to Jesus, they were guilty of blaspheming the name in particular. The name was, perhaps, a “flashpoint” for the community, and the text of Isaiah a key battle-ground for defining fidelity to God, and the identity of the people of God. By associating Jesus with the divine name, John legitimates the allegiance of believers to Jesus in the face of Jewish opposition, as well as comforts those who were troubled by the continued absence of Jesus, with the point that they were yet identified by the divine name (17.11), and that eschatological revelation of the name promised in Isaiah was extended to their own time as well (17.26b).

Abstract:
There is a small body of literature on Wittgenstein's house - the Palais Stonborough or Kundmanngasse- which has attempted to establish a link of some kind with the philosopher's writing and an understanding of architecture. However, this literature has generally misapplied Wittgenstein's philosophy. In order (Q locate a more convincing account, this dissertation offers an original reading indebted to the contemporary interpretation of Wittgenstein known as the "new Wittgenstein". Emphasizing and valuing grammatical investigations of language-use and its adequacy in describing the world, this reading undermines metaphysical or dualist accounts, as well as universals characteristic of essentialist accounts. With regards to architecture discourse, this reading yields a critique of theory-use in the architecture discourse since Modernity, through its valuation of everyday language-use over metaphysical constructions. Reading architecture through this new Wittgensteinian lens circumvents the restrictive post-Enlightenment dualists' paradigm that underlies metaphysical construction , and instead provides a holistic view of architecture.

Abstract:
This thesis argues that the Preah Vihear Temple territorial dispute is primarily a result of conflicting historical claims tied to the colonial legacy in Southeast Asia. Furthermore, the matter was not actually settled with the 1962 International Court of Justice decision and did not reemerge as a result of domestic politics in Thailand. Greater threats changed the behavior of both countries vis-a-vis the Preah Vihear Temple issue, creating the appearance that issue was actually settled. When those threats abated, the Preah Vihear issue resumed an important role in the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia. This thesis recognizes the importance of domestic political turmoil in Thailand arguing that it functioned as an accelerant on an already contentious issue.

Abstract:
The Vehicle Quality Information (YQI) group at Scania provides a monthly basic warranty forecast in order to predict the 12-months basic warranty level before the products have actually finished their first year in use. The presently used method for forecasting is based upon differentiation over only two parameters: responsible department for a claim and delay in claim reporting. However, warranty cost varies within a wide range depending on the complexity of the repair, thus perhaps being driven by several other parameters as well. Especially for small product series, single high costs and early repairs might cause great overestimation of the final warranty cost. This thesis work aims to improve the calculation of the warranty claim forecast and to develop a measurement of the forecast uncertainty, especially for small product series, such as the present Euro 6 engines.

A patent owner has the rights to exclude others, without his consent, to use his invention based on the metes and bounds set forth by the claim(s). Claim also serves a notice function to the public. In order to balance the owner’s right and the public interest, it is important to have a clear and manifesting view of claim interpretation nationwide. However, in Taiwan, the patent examiner, the administrative judges and judges of Civil Law Courts each has different view in terms of claim(s) construction. In this article, the author first introduces three different ways of claim(s) construction and later explains the differences among them, followed by the analyzing of the advantages and the disadvantages of them. Then the author compares the rules and practice in this country with those of foreign countries. Finally, by using a few decisions made by the patent examiners or the administrative judges or the judges of civil court, the author tries to illustrate the way how the claim was being interpreted in different stages in this country.

Second use invention is directed to a discovery of a known use. The use is not a physical entity and is not regreaded as a method of using varies by all coutries. It is to collect the provisions of Patent Acts, Rules, case laws and cases in different coutries in order to conclude what the best way in expression of a subject matter of use inention, and what interpretations the use invention claims should be. In USA, a medical use invention must be expressed in a method of treatment. In Europe, a first medical use invention can be claimed in an article without limitation of use; and a medical second use invention must be expressed by a "use." In Japan, China and Taiwan, either "product" or "use" may be used as subject matter of a use claim; wherein a first medical use invention may be expressed in a pharmaceutical composition without limitation of uses i Japan.

Abstract:
Collective or communal housing (Cohousing) is housing featuring joint facilities available to all residents, while the residents also maintain autonomous, self sufficient housing units. The communal spaces form a central characteristic of the housing complex and is not just an added amenity. The shared facilities should encourage and accommodate social interaction, group activities and the coordination and cooperation between residents to carry out common tasks. A distinct infill level in buildings is gradually emerging. This level contains all the equipment, non load-bearing partitions and a substantial amount of services. The infill level restores the building as provider of space and shelter and facilitates the specific needs and preferences of the inhabitants more directly. Traditional notions of the family is being challenged, placing increasing demand on homes to be flexible and responsive to changes in family structure. Since the long-range benefits of a stable community is jeopardised if residents have to move when their spatial requirements change, transformable interiors were used to reduce this risk. Flexibility is largely used in the housing units, relying on advanced computed aided manufacture that is able to fabricate components for easy assembly on site. For the purposes of this thesis an under utilised office building in the Pretoria central business district was chosen to illustrate a cohousing complex in an urban environment. Design energy was focused on designing the communal facilities and a sample housing unit, illustrating the support system and investigating the unit's versatility.
