Abstract:
Excerpt: "Names and adjurations are the two main theurgic means found in the Hekhalot literature applied in connect ion with the descent to the Merkhavah and the invocation of angels to come down to earth and to reveal secrets," says Ithamar Gruenwald in his book on the Merkavah literature. He continues and maintains, with Gershom Scholem, that "that particular element in the Hekhalot Literature actually belonged to its very heart and this almost from its beginning." It is very seductive for the student of this literature to go straight to the heart of these texts; but the danger of this approach is as great as the danger of yeridat merkavah itself. Indeed, I feel as if I am passing the gates of the Hekhalot, the watchers of the gates standing on both sides prepared to throw their iron axes at my head. I can only hope that I may present the proper names! [...]

Full text
Abstract:
La détermination de la situation de l’infinité de Dieu chez Descartes au regard d’autres concepts du corpus (immensité, indéfini), de ses rapports au concept aristotélicien d’apeiron et de son histoire médiévale (Thomas d'Aquin, Bonaventure, Henri de Gand, Scot) et moderne (Suarez, Bérulle, Montaigne), doit permettre de faire voir la tension interne dont l’infinité grève la métaphysique cartésienne<br>Because divine infinity is not a theological obvious fact, Descartes works to give him a particular meaning : at the same time founder of the eternal truths in the letters of printemps1630, and the divine name par excellence according to the requirements of the first philosophy in 1641. Then, infinity both assumes dionysian characteristics (incomprehensibility) and fulfils the requirements of the metaphysics in the process of constitution (idea maxime vera). The determination of the situation of God's infinity in Descartes with regard to the other concepts of the corpus (unlimitedness, indefinite), of its relationships with the Aristotelian concept of apeiron and its medieval history (Thomas d' Aquin, Bonaventure, Henry of Ghent, Scot) and modern (Suarez, Bérulle, Montaigne), allows to show the internal tension the infinite burdens Cartesian metaphysics

Abstract:
Direkta religiösa metaforer förekom endast i två texter.

Abstract:
According to the Constitution of South Africa, the government is required to make all the infor-mation in the ten indigenous languages of South Africa (excluding English), available to the public. For this reason, the government made the information, that already existed for these ten languages, available to the public and an effort is also been made to increase the amount of resources available in these languages (Groenewald & Du Plooy, 2010). This release of infor-mation further helps to implement Krauwer‟s (2003) idea that there is an inventory for the mini-mal number of language-related resources required for a language to be competitive at the level of research and teaching. This inventory is known as the "Basic Language Resource Kit" (BLARK). Since most of the languages in South Africa are resource scarce, it is of the best in-terest for the cultural growth of the country, that each of the indigenous South African languages develops their own BLARK. In Chapter 1, the need for the development of an implementable named entity recogniser (NER) for Afrikaans is discussed by first referring to the Constitution of South Africa’s (Republic of South Africa, 2003) language policy. Secondly, the guidelines of BLARK (Krauwer, 2003) are discussed, which is followed by a discussion of an audit that focuses on the number of re-sources and the distribution of human language technology for all eleven South African languages (Sharma Grover, Van Huyssteen & Pretorius, 2010). In respect of an audit conducted by Sharma Grover et al. (2010), it was established that there is a shortage of text-based tools for Afrikaans. This study focuses on this need for text-based tools, by focusing on the develop-ment of a NER for Afrikaans. In Chapter 2 a description is given on what an entity and a named entity is. Later in the chapter the process of technology recycling is explained, by referring to other studies where the idea of technology recycling has been applied successfully (Rayner et al., 1997). Lastly, an analysis is done on the differences that may occur between Afrikaans and Dutch named entities. These differences are divided into three categories, namely: identical cognates, non-identical cognates and unrelated entities. Chapter 3 begins with a description of Frog (van den Bosch et al, 2007), the Dutch NER used in this study, and the functions and operation of its NER-component. This is followed by a description of the Afrikaans-to-Dutch-converter (A2DC) (Van Huyssteen & Pilon, 2009) and finally the various experiments that were completed, are explained. The study consists of six experiments, the first of which was to determine the results of Frog on Dutch data. The second experiment evaluated the effectiveness of Frog on unchanged (raw) Afrikaans data. The following two experiments evaluated the results of Frog on “Dutched” Afrikaans data. The last two experiments evaluated the effectiveness of Frog on raw and “Dutched” Afrikaans data with the addition of gazetteers as part of the pre-processing step. In conclusion, a summary is given with regards to the comparisons between the NER for Afri-kaans that was developed in this study, and the NER-component that Puttkammer (2006) used in his tokeniser. Finally a few suggestions for future research are proposed.<br>MA (Applied Language and Literary Studies), North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2013

Leijonmarck, Gustaf. "In the Name of God - or not : A study on how external actor religiosity may affect rebel groups."

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to answer the question of why some rebel movements choose to take on a religious character, and why some do not, even in cases where they share many characteristics. This thesis argues that a religious or secular framing is a tool that can be tactically utilised by rebel groups in order to further their goals and strengthen their position.   Given the fact that rebel groups usually start out at an inherent resource disadvantage, securing external support is paramount for any rebel group to stand a fighting chance. External actors need to be talked into supporting these rebel groups, and are more likely to support rebel groups with whom they share certain characteristics. This thesis argues that one of the main ways in which insurgent groups can seek to lobby or appease external actors is through aligning its religiosity to fit that of the external actor. Through examining the lifespan of two separate ethnic insurgencies in Pakistan, that of the Baloch and of the Pashtun, and tracing that to the religiosity of the latest iterations of insurgent groups within these long-standing conflicts, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP), which have taken very different paths when it comes to religiosity despite their similar origins, and examining their potential external backers and the influence they may have had, this thesis found that foreign backer religiosity might be a powerful determinant in influencing insurgent religiosity.

Ahn, Sung Ho. "Term question in Korea 1882-1911, and its Chinese roots : a study in continuity and divergence." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5473.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to study Western missionaries’ theological debate over the choice of the name of God, known as the Term Question, in the Korean Bible, a controversy which implied a certain theological position in terms of the degree of continuity or discontinuity between existing Korean theistic belief and faith in the God of Bible. This thesis seeks three goals. First, it attempts to analyse the Chinese roots of the Term Question in Korea. In China, the Term Question first arose among Roman Catholic missions from 1637 to 1742 between an indigenous Confucian term, Shangti 上帝 (Sovereign on High), favoured by the Jesuits, notably Matteo Ricci, and a neologism, T’ienzhu 天主 (the Lord of Heaven), used by the Dominicans and the Franciscans. A second phase of the Chinese Term Question involved nineteenth-century Protestant missions, and confronted missions with a choice between Shangti, most notably advocated by James Legge of the London Missionary Society, and Shen 神 (a generic term for god), supported by a majority of American missionaries. These three Chinese theistic terms were imported into the Korea mission field. John Ross of the United Presbyterian Church in Manchuria, in his first Korean New Testament (1877-1887), translated the name of God as Hananim, the Supreme Lord of Korean indigenous religion, on the basis of the Shangti edition of the Delegates’ Version. The first Korean Roman Catholics and later the Anglican missions in Korea adopted Ch’onzhu (Chinese T’ienzhu), following Catholic practice in China. A Korean diplomat in Japan, Su-Jung Lee, adopted Shin (Chinese Shen) from the Shen edition of the Chinese Bible, in his Korean Bible translations (1883-1885). The need to choose between the these three Korean theistic terms, derived theologically from the three corresponding Chinese theistic terms, consequently triggered the Term Question in Korea from 1882 to 1911. Second, the thesis argues that there was a significant theological continuity between the Chinese and Korean Term Questions. The Term Question in both China and Korea proceeded on a similar pattern; it was a terminological controversy between an indigenous theistic term (Shangti and Hananim) on the one hand and a neologism (T’ienzhu and Korean Ch’onzhu) or a generic term (Shen and Korean Shin) on the other hand. Central to both Term Questions was the theological issue of whether a primitive monotheism, congruent with Christian belief, had existed among the Chinese and Koreans. It will suggest that whilst those who adhered to a degeneration theory of the history of religions used either Shangti or Hananim as the name of the God of the Bible, those who rejected the existence of primitive monotheism preferred to use the neologism or the generic term. Third, this thesis suggests that there was, nevertheless, a significant divergence between the Term Question in China and that in Korea. Whereas the Term Question in China became polarised for over three centuries between two equal and opposite parties – between the Jesuits (Shangti) and the Dominicans-Franciscans (T’ienzhu), and later between the Shangti party and the Shen party in Protestant missions, that in iv Korea was a short-term argument for three decades between a vast majority (of the Hananim party) and a small minority (the opponents of Hananim). It is argued that the disproportion in Korea in favour of Hananim was due to the much closer analogy between Hananim and the Christian trinity, as seen in the Dan-Gun myth, than was the case with Shangti in Chinese religion. For this reason, the thesis concludes by suggesting that the adoption of the indigenous monotheistic term, Hananim, in a Christian form contributed to the higher rate of growth of the Korean church compared to that of the church in China.

Miller, Michael T. "The metaphysical meaning of the name of God in Jewish thought : a philosophical analysis of historical traditions from late antiquity into the Middle Ages." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2014. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/14290/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Name of God has formed a crucial element of Jewish thought throughout its history, from the Biblical text, through the rabbinic and kabbalistic writings and into the modern age when the topic has still been a focal point for Jewish philosophers. The purpose of this study is to examine the texts of Judaism, especially those within the mystical tradition, pertaining to the Name of God, and to offer a philosophical analysis of these as a means of understanding the metaphysical role of the name generally, in terms of its relationship with identity. While the materials are historical, the aim is a speculative re/construction of a systematic philosophical approach to naming from these materials. Beginning with the formation of rabbinic Judaism in Late Antiquity, I will progress through the development of the motif into the Medieval Kabbalah, where the Name reaches its grandest and most systematic statement – and the one which has most helped to form the ideas of Jewish philosophers in the 20th Century. This will highlight certain metaphysical ideas which have developed within Judaism from the Biblical sources, and which present a direct challenge to the paradigms of western philosophy. Thus a grander subtext is a criticism of the Greek metaphysics of being which the west has inherited, and which Jewish philosophers often subject to challenges of varying subtlety; it is these philosophers who often place a peculiar emphasis on the personal name, and this emphasis seems to depend on the historical influence of the Jewish metaphysical tradition of the Name of God.

Arnold, Mark P. "Revealing the name : an investigation of the divine character through a conversation analysis of the dialogues between God and Moses in the Book of Exodus." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2015. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/3787/.

Full text
Abstract:
YHWH’s statement to Moses, אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה , has been much discussed by biblical scholars and theologians. For much of the last century this discussion related to matters of etymology or history of religion, or the precise grammar of the text. However, recently there has been renewed interest in understanding the statement in its present context as part of the book of Exodus, and in particular its role in the call of Moses. My thesis seeks to deepen understanding of the implications of this statement through a close reading of the dialogues between Moses and YHWH. My close reading of individual dialogues involves three steps: first investigation of the way in which the narrator portrays the actions of the characters, then the manner in which the narrator portrays individual speech of the characters and finally the way in which an analysis of the dialogues utilising principles from the socio-linguistic field of Conversation Analysis adds to an understanding of the characters. Through this close reading I show that the phrase אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה is best understood as linking the meaning of the name YHWH to the verb “to be” and in particular God’s promise to “be with” Moses in 3:12. The phrase affirms both YHWH’s presence with Moses and his freedom to be present in the manner he chooses and the implications of this affirmation of presence and freedom are worked out more fully in the narrative of Exodus. In the thesis my reading of the dialogues in Exodus 3-4 shows that YHWH transforms Moses into the means by which YHWH delivers his people from Egypt and also by which YHWH is present with his people. My examination of the dialogues in Exodus 5-7 demonstrates that YHWH’s plans are accomplished by his speech which re-designates and reshapes those with and about whom he is speaking. My analysis of Exodus 19-24 finds that the dialogues demonstrate YHWH’s freedom to be present as he chooses to different people at different points. Exodus 32:7-33:11 gives further meaning and significance to the divine name in terms of YHWH’s withdrawal in response to the idolatry of the people. From the final section of dialogue, Exodus 33:12-34:35, I show that the intercession of Moses is critical to the demonstration of YHWH’s mercy and compassion. My analysis of each of these dialogues demonstrates that a key means by which YHWH is present to his people is in and through Moses.

Raveton, Elsa-Chirine. "L'idée de simplicité divine : une lecture de Bonaventure et Thomas d'Aquin." Thesis, Paris 4, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA040138/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This study seeks to contribute to a better understanding and comprehension of the idea of divine simplicity, which means the absence in God of any composition. Cornerstone of medieval theological thinking, divine simplicity was rediscovered 35 years ago by philosophers of analytical leanings, who challenged its coherence. It has since formed the subject of abundant philosophical debate, however, the detour via the history of philosophy is necessary in order to draw out the network of concepts, arguments and issues, from where divine simplicity derives its meaning. After the study of the first development of this idea in ancient and patristic texts, and its treatment by Peter Lombard on the eve of the 4th Council of Lateran in 1215, which integrates for the first time divine simplicity in a genuin profession of faith of the magisterium, we shall focus on the works of Bonaventure of Bagnoregio and Thomas Aquinas, who grant this divine attribute a founding role in the study of the mystery of God. The idea of divine simplicity keeps being comprised in the dialectics of similarity and dissimilarity between Creator and creature. While Aquinas associates in an unilateral way absolute simplicity and transcendence of the uncreated, Bonaventure offers also created resemblances of divine simplicity which favour its intuition. Far from appearing incoherent, the idea of divine simplicity is a powerful means to open our minds to a level of superior reality, indeed mysterious, but nevertheless radiant

Abstract:
In the present paper the focus is put on the strategies of rendering the names of the Supreme God of Israel in Biblia Hebraica in Bantu languages. The data from 3 Swahili versions and a Zulu version of the Bible is examined, with some additions from the Dabida version. Different names of the Supreme God are used in the canonical text. The two principal names are YHWH and ’elohim. Since the period of the Second Temple it has been forbidden to pronounce YHWH, the proper name of the God of Israel. The Hebrew tradition (known as qere-ketiv) preserved the writing of the four letters of this name YHWH, but it was to be read as ’adonay (‘Lord’ in Hebrew), or as ’elohim (‘God’ in Hebrew) in certain cases. In biblical and religious texts in different languages (but not in Hebrew) the Tetragrammaton YHWH is sometimes rendered as Yahveh or Yehovah (with some orthographic variants). This situation is examined in our paper, as well as the ways of rendering the Hebrew lexeme tseva’ot. Special attention is paid to the usage of the name Allah as the name of the Only Supreme God corresponding to the Hebrew name ’elohim. The crucial issue of correlation between the binary masculine/feminine gender system in Biblical Hebrew, on the one hand, and the noun class system in Bantu languages, on the other, is discussed in the final part of the paper.

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the group of deities with solar aspects in the period of the Old Kingdom (ca. 2592-2118+25 BC). For this research, five gods were selected: Atum, Shu, Kheprer, Nefertum and Weneg. They were either linked to the sun cycle and light (Atum and Kheprer, evening and morning sun respectively, Shu), or to some particular plants (Nefertum to water lily and Weneg to the so-called wng-plant). Some of the deities under survey also represented a part of the so- called Heliopolitan cosmogony and cosmology. A number of Old Kingdom sources (Pyramid Texts, tomb decoration and burial equipment with special focus on the funerary domains and offering formulae, royal names and epithets, personal names, royal annals and administrative sources, namely seals and sealings, papyri from Wadi el-Jarf, Gebelein and Abusir, and titles) are analysed, taking into consideration the attestations for the individual gods and the information concerning the links of the deities to the sun and their solar aspects. Likewise, the roles and functions of these divinities, and their relation to other divine beings are studied. Further research questions are in which social spheres these gods appeared and where they were venerated, if exclusively in Heliopolis and its vicinity, or if there were diverse sanctuaries...

Petrucci, Maria Grazia. "In the name of the father, the son and the islands of the Gods : a reappraisal of Konishi Ryusa, a merchant, and of Konishi Yukinaga, a Christian samurai, in sixteenth-century Japan." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/17582.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate and re-interpret the historical figures of Konishi Ryusa and of his son, Konishi YakuroYukinaga analyzed through their mercantile background, as a samurai, and as firm Christian believers. Konishi Ryusa emerges as an atypical character, whose knowledge and appreciation for a foreign credo brought him to be wealthy and well connected. He was the bow from which his sons sprung by projecting their images on the historical screen of Japan's past. Ryusa was in effect the sponsor and the cause for Yukinaga's success in life. Yet, Yukinaga remains a controversial character in Japanese history because nothing much is left than few records. Most of his family documents were destroyed or lost, as Japan was engulfed in civil wars, factional rivalries and destruction. Yukinaga was involved in the territorial unification struggles, as his job was to connect peripheral areas, like the Seto Inland Sea, to the central government represented by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Yukinaga's father, Ryusa, also worked for Hideyoshi once he became the ruler of central Japan. Ryusa's acquaintance with the Jesuit Fathers and his consequent adoption of Christianity, a foreign religion, brought to him and to his family spiritual, practical and political advantages. For Ryusa, the spiritual advantages were less visible as Christianity was still in an early stage, but his contact with the Jesuits opened the way to the Portuguese merchants, enhancing his business relations. His mercantile experience brought him to get acquainted with local political power hubs. His son, Yukinaga reaped the benefits of his father's position, and being a skilled warrior he raised higher close to Hideyoshi's power. Yukinaga for his integrity was often described as model for Christian conversion, but remained a samurai in the "Land of the Kami". He embodied both western cultural expansion and Japanese militaristic ambitions proper of the last stages of the period of the civil wars. Hence, this study aims at a re-appraisal of both Konishi Ryusa, as a merchant and Yukinaga as new types of men, possessing not only technical and military knowledge, but also a commercial know-how. They applied new technology and ideas brought in by the Portuguese and missionaries literally navigating on the monsoon winds. My aim is to focus particularly on their adoption of Christianity, as it was perceived in sixteenth century Japan, and on how they applied it in their lives. Although my research includes Ryusa as one of the leader of the Christian movement in Kyoto and Nagasaki, my focus will be mainly on Konishi Yukinaga, whose brilliant career as a warrior led him to become a Great Admiral. He used Christianity as a political tool in the Seto Insland Sea area, still a peripheral area ruled by pirates and warlords. It was in this stretch of Sea that important cultural contact between Japan and the rest of the world occurred. From there Japan exercised its domestic and international authority in the attempt to create a new order in East Asia. Yukinaga's work in the Seto Insland Sea demonstrated the existence of a power gap between peripheries and the not yet stabilized centrality of the Japanese Government, whose expansionistic aim was to put under control peripheral but strategic areas in order to regulate its domestic and international relations. Although Konishi Yukinaga took part in Toyotomi Hideyoshi's adoption of an international aggressive diplomatic policy, used by Japan to face western economic expansion in Asia, he embodied the will to negotiate and to mediate at its best. His brilliant character, neglected and perhaps misinterpreted throughout the centuries, is revealed through his work as a mediator, as he was willing to persuade and to compromise in order to reach a situation where there were only winners. It relates perhaps the story of a man whose values lingered between the old and the new, almost as a "renaissance" type of man, for a Japanese renaissance that never took off.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>Asian Studies, Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:
ANOTATION The work deals with translation and interpretation of the original Hebrew text of Genesis 11, making the use of synchronous exegetical method. The method focuses mostly on careful observation of multi-layered meanings of Hebrew terms, direct speeches, macrosyntactical markers, parallelisms and sentence constituents. To reach deeper dimension of the text, the work also takes into account the original non-vocalized text, graphical form of the text, consonances and metathesis. One of the most significant features of this work is the attention paid to the timeless nature of Hebrew verbs, which allows to read the narrative about human desire, pride, non-hearing, illusions, inner decay and the way back to God not as a story from the past, but as a lively anthropological message.

Abstract:
The present research aims to analyze the contours of the maintenance of the credit information databases in Portugal, and comparative study. The purpose is therefore to identify a supposed collision between the freedom of expression of financial institutions and the rights of personalities of debtor citizens enrolled in the system, individuals or legal entities, pointed to possible consequences on their rights to good name and credit. Therefore, the scope will be the impact of the institute of credit registries, in face of its peculiarities, in the institute of the rights of the personality, aiming at the recognition of the existence of a real collision of rights. Once recognized, it will be proposed to apply the conflict resolution rules provided by Portuguese legislation. If it is not possible to resolve the conflict in this way, it will be invested in a different outcome, proposing the accomplishment of legislative changes regarding the matter, in order to prevent the materialization of a possible collision in advance, seeking, in that way, to establish a balance in the socio-normative system. Therefore, the screen search is divided into four chapters. In a first moment will be analyzed the institute of the rights of the personality lato sensu. Only after the complete scanning of these, will it be possible, in a second moment, to continue the study of the strictu sensu rights involved in the clash: good name, credit and freedom of expression.Once the matter concerning personality rights has been exhausted, the analysis will notably focus on the system of credit information databases. This will be done through a thorough examination of its characteristics and forms, in addition to the appreciation of the main institutions, not only in Portugal but also in other countries, in order to compare the models and seek to gather information and make suggestions applicable to the local regime. Finally, the final chapter will focus on the clash between colliding rights. The question of responsibility for the disclosure of true facts will be examined first. This will, to a certain extent, allow for the recognition of a real collision of rights, allowing the continuation of the investigation to the specific examination of this matter. In this scenario, it will be, in the first moment, a proposed resolution of the conflict, based on the legal methods established in Portuguese civil legislation. If this is not enough, the investigator will suggest preventive legal methods that allow both rights to be balanced prior to the eventual collision, thus allowing simultaneous and peaceful exercises. The difficulty in deliberating the proposed theme is already admitted, which will probably prevent the investigator from reaching a narrow conclusion about the confrontation. It is, in fact, a discussion that can not continue to be shunned behind the scenes of law, as it involves a theme that is repeatedly responsible for affecting citizens and their personality rights.

Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/25480.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the Lord's Prayer, namely, the initial invocation and the first three requests, presenting a possible reading of Matthew 6,9-10. We believe it to be opportune for the man of our day, once which the Lord's Prayer is an effective catechetical instrument that enables us to make known the God revealed in Jesus Christ. Thus the Fathers of the Church understood it, who saw in the Our Father a «summary of the whole Gospel». In fact, we begin by elaborating a pragmatic approach to the contexts in which the mateana work (geographic, historical and political, social and religious, economic) is inscribed. That said, we attempt in the text that gave rise to it, in its comprehensive literary setting (Gospel of Matthew and Sermon on the Mount), near (alms, prayer, fasting) and in their intertextualities of greater importance. Arrived at the heart of the matter - the theology of Matthew 6,9-10 -, we identify the one to whom we address in the initial invocation: not a tyrant sir, but a Father (abba). Then, we pray for the sanctification of his Name, which is the same as asking us to be holy as He is holy. Subsequently, we desire the coming of his Kingdom, Jesus Christ himself, and, finally, we ask that our will be conformed to the divine.

Anspach, Philip. "The indigenous rights of personality with particular reference to the Swazi in the kingdom of Swaziland." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1911.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was undertaken to establish whether rights of personality are known in indigenous law. Since indigenous law differs not only between tribes but is also affected by the degree of exposure to Western values, a micro-study has been done in a semi-rural environment in the Kingdom of Swaziland to establish to what extent own value systems have been influenced or altered when Western legal concepts are utilised. The information, obtained by interviewing a panel of experts, was compared with the available literature. During the process of gathering information, the aims of the research were not only to describe how the legal principles function, but also to take note of those socio-cultural processes which function outside of the law. Rights of personality were studied against a background of the culture and way of life of the peoples concerned. The importance of culture has been acknowledged in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, wherein the recognition and application of indigenous law generally rests on a constitutionally protected right to culture. Whilst the identifiable rights of personality may generally be classified according to specialised legal systems, the separation of rights to good name and to dignity may be inappropriate in the indigenous sphere. Dignity in indigenous legal systems is to be viewed as a comprehensive right of personality, into which should be subsumed the right to good name and reputation in the community. It is such dignity, embracing the ubuntu quality of humanness that is protected as a comprehensive indigenous right of personality. Although the indigenous law of personality is showing some signs of adapting to new developments, there is also proof that the established legal principles and human values are being retained. However, these changes are unique and are neither typically traditional nor Western. The indigenous law of personality, operating in a changing social environment, has to retain its flexibility and adaptability in order to remain ”living” law for the peoples concerned.<br>Jurisprudence<br>LL.D.

Santos, Ângelo Emanuel Neves dos. "Design and simulation of a smart bottle with fill-level sensing based on oxide TFT technology." Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/19593.

Full text
Abstract:
Packaging is an important element responsible for brand growth and one of the main rea-sons for producers to gain competitive advantages through technological innovation. In this re-gard, the aim of this work is to design a fully autonomous electronic system for a smart bottle packaging, being integrated in a European project named ROLL-OUT. The desired application for the smart bottle is to act as a fill-level sensor system in order to determine the liquid content level that exists inside an opaque bottle, so the consumer can exactly know the remaining quantity of the product inside. An in-house amorphous indium–gallium–zinc oxide thin-film transistor (a-IGZO TFT) model, previously developed, was used for circuit designing purposes. This model was based in an artificial neural network (ANN) equivalent circuit approach. Taking into account that only n-type oxide TFTs were used, plenty of electronic building-blocks have been designed: clock generator, non-overlapping phase generator, a capacitance-to-voltage converter and a comparator. As it was demonstrated by electrical simulations, it has been achieved good functionality for each block, having a final system with a power dissipation of 2.3 mW (VDD=10 V) not considering the clock generator. Four printed circuit boards (PCBs) have been also designed in order to help in the testing phase. Mask layouts were already designed and are currently in fabrication, foreseeing a suc-cessful circuit fabrication, and a major step towards the design and integration of complex trans-ducer systems using oxide TFTs technology.
