Abstract:

AbstractClement of Alexandria's Excerpta ex Theodoto, Eclogae Propheticae, and Adumbrationes depict a cosmic hierarchy featuring, in descending order, the divine Face, the seven beings first created, the archangels, and the angels. This account is problematic in that it seems to incorporate a contradiction: one set of texts presents a fix cosmic hierarchy populated by different types having at its top the seven protoctists. A second set of texts, however, interprets this process of initiation as a continuous ascent on the cosmic ladder, marked by an ongoing cyclical transformation of humans into angels, of angels into archangels, and of archangels into protoctists.This article sets forth the principles governing Clement's hierarchical cosmos, and proposes a solution to the apparent contradiction between the two accounts. In essence, Clement of Alexandria internalizes the cosmic ladder and the associated experience of ascent and transformation, offering an early example of what scholars have termed "interiorized apocalypticism."

Abstract:

The Monastery of St. John Theologian near Pirot (Poganovo), best known for the icon of Miracle of Latomos (now in Sofia) and wall decoration from the end of the 15th century, was well examined and treated by conservators as a building complex, but is still insufficiently studied. The time of the creation of the monument and the identity of its founders, Constantine and Helena, whose names were engraved on the west facade, were variously interpreted, and the largest number of scholars were of the opinion that they were Constantine Dragas (Dejanovic) and his daughter Helena, wife of Emperor Manuel II (1391-1425). However, the persons in questions were members of the nobility of despotes Stefan, who got these areas from Sultan Mehmed I, after the Battle near Sofia in 1413. Architectural drawings and watercolors made by architects Mihailo Valtrovic and Dragutin Milutinovic, who visited the area around Trn after its liberation from Turkish rule in 1877-1878, made it possible to detect relationships with other monuments in the valley of Jerma, the Monastery of Archangel Michael in Trn and the Monastery of the Virgin in Mislovstica. Characteristic features of these churches - seven-sided dome and a manner of construction with stone, brick and mortar in the distinctive decorative type that cannot be found elsewhere - show that they were built by the same masters, members of an architectural workshop, in the second decade of the 15th century.

Abstract:

Images of archangels and angels, which were painted on the walls, in the upper parts of the buildings and, on their structural elements, were very popular in Christian Nubian painting as attested by the discoveries from Church SWN.BV on the citadel in Old Dongola. These images, which derive from pre-Christian art, depict the eternal nature of the archangels and angels. Presenting this group of representations, the author traces the origins of these images to highlight the role of these spiritual beings as intermediaries between God and humankind. As such, they move freely between the Heavens and the Earth, so the air and cosmic space are their natural surroundings. Moreover, archangels govern the forces of nature, the planets, and the seven skies. Therefore, their sanctuaries were located on hill summits, in the upper chapels, on structural elements of ecclesiastical buildings, etc. The Nubian tradition is therefore part of a broader Mediterranean tradition, the roots of which should be sought in the Near East.

Abstract:

In the Church of St. John in Cappadocia, also known as Ayvali Kilise or Gulu dere 4, on the frescoes which were painted between 913 and 920, particular devotion was shown for the cult of the archangels. The two archangels Michael and Gabriel, were painted in very large dimensions, with inscriptions describing them as 'great', besides giving their names. In addition to that a unique group of two figures was presented. It depicted the monk Archippos turned toward a colossal figure of the archangel Michael, painted strictly frontally. The iconographical relationship of these two figures, unrecorded in scholarly literature, indicates that this was definitely Archippos, the custodian of the important shrine of the Archangel Michael at Chonai, which still existed in those times. This would not only be a very early, but the only preserved presentation of Archippos, other than his appearance in the well-known composition of the Miracle of the Archangel Michael at Chonai.

Abstract:

660 male and 660 female names were evaluated using a five-point rating scale on the dimensions of active–passive, masculine–feminine, and like–dislike by 478 undergraduate students. Twenty groups of approximately 24 participants each were formed (14 women and 10 men), and each group rated either 66 male or 66 female names. These ratings were compared with name ratings made 27 years ago by undergraduate students tested by Buchanan and Bruning in 1971. The top 25 names on each dimension are presented and changes in their connotative meanings over the 27 years are noted.

An updated check list of the world’s extant whitefly species is presented, comprising 1556 accepted species names in 161 genera, together with a further 210 species-group names and 40 genus-group names in synonymy. 13 nomina nuda, seven nomina dubia and six species now formally excluded from the Aleyrodidae are listed. Nomenclatural changes introduced here are 10 new generic and 10 new specific synonymies, together with 23 new combinations, seven new replacement names for junior homonyms and one revived original combination. Three subfamilial names are available in the Aleyrodidae, most species being placed in the Aleyrodinae or Aleurodicinae. The controversial third subfamily, Udamoselinae, is briefly discussed. For species currently regarded as valid, only the original and current combinations are given, with authorities. Original countries of description are given, here updated to reflect current geopolitical boundaries, but distributions and biological data are not given. An index to all names is provided.

Names within Passiflora section Dysosmia (Passifloraceae) were evaluated for proper typification and nomenclatural clarity. Because several names lacked type material, 13 lectotypes, two neotypes, and four epitypes are here designated to maintain nomenclatural stability. Many more names suffered from other nomenclatural discrepancies and thus four orthographic errors, six author citations, and 12 type designations are here corrected to comply with the International Code of Nomenclature (ICN). Seven names in Dysosmia are treated as ambiguous and 12 names are identified as either invalid or illegitimate.

This paper proposes nine new synonyms for seven Brazilian taxa from two genera: Monteverdia and Plenckia (Celastroideae). This proposal is a preliminary step in the Celastraceae treatment for the ongoing “Flora do Brasil 2020” project. Most of the names discussed here had been neglected in literature and are absent in available taxonomic revisions, with some being discussed for the first time after the publication. Twenty-seven Gomphrena names are here investigated, and discussed. Seventeen names are typified (sixteen lectotypes, one neotype) in the present paper on specimens preserved at B, GOET, M, P, and S, while isolectotypes are found at B, BM, BR, CORD, F, G, M, P, S, and US. Concerning the other ten names, they were previously dicusssed by Holzhammer, who reported the word “Typus”. According to the Art. 7.10 of the ICN Holzhammer’s statements are here interpreted as lectotypifications.

Abstract:

Cheshire, settled by Anglo-Saxons in the later seventh century, has many placenames of British origin, as well as Irish place-names given by tenth-century migrants from Ireland. Twenty-seven real or supposed instances are discussed here: Arclid, Antrobus, Arrow, Bollin, Brynn, Cilgwri, Crewe, Dane, Dee, Eccleston, Goyt, Ince, Landican, Liscard, Lostock, Lyme, Mellor, Mottram, Noctorum, Peover, Rhedynfre, Tarvin, Tintwistle, Tybrunawt/Tybrunawg, Weaver, Werneth, Wheelock. Ten of them are provided with derivations at variance with The Cambridge Dictionary of English Place-Names and other handbooks. Also discussed are three Welsh forms (Cilgwri, Rhedynfre, Tybrunawt/Tybrunawg) sometimes related to Cheshire. Although the second is certainly Farndon in the county’s south-west, the first and third have no Cheshire link. Cilgwri may be identified as a place near Corwen, Denbighshire. Tybrunawt/Tybrunawg or ‘Brunian House, House on (the River) Browney’, a book-name for the location of the Battle of Brunanburh in 937, should be identified with the Roman fortress of Lanchester above the River Brune or Browney, Co. Durham. Hence Brunanburh means ‘fortress of the Browney’. Other historical information is provided by Arclid, apparently the Arecluta where the British-Latin writer Gildas was born in 493. Analysis of toponyms thus provides new data on Cheshire’s past, while refuting earlier theories.

Abstract:

During our nomenclatural revision of the genus Bromus L. (Poaceae) for Flora Iberica, we found that several names were still untypified: nine names in current use or their basionyms and five synonyms. Typifications are still needed since stabilising the names will facilitate their use. We propose lectotypes for Bromusalopecuros Poir., B.contortus Desf. (and the superfluous B.alopecuroides Poir.), B.benekenii (Lange) Trimen, B.intermediusGuss.subsp.divaricatus Bonnier & Layens, B.molliformis J.Lloyd ex Billot, B.lepidus Holmb., B.lepidus f. lasiolepis Holmb., Bromussubg.Stenobromus (Griseb.) Hack. and Bromussect.Stenobromus Griseb. Neotypes for B.erectus Huds. and B.ramosus Huds. and an epitype for B.intermediussubsp.divaricatus Bonnier & Layens are proposed. In addition, we identify an isoneotype for B.erectus and isolectotypes for B.lepidus and B.lepidusf.lasiolepis. The area inhabited by the typified taxa includes both Africa and Europe. All the selected types are in agreement with the current use of the names and, thus, our selections contribute to stabilising the nomenclature of the genus Bromus. A discussion is provided to justify the selections. In addition, we typified two supraspecific names B.subg.Stenobromus and B.sect.Stenobromus. Finally, a new section, B.sect.Penicillius Llamas & Acedo, is described.

Abstract:

Undergraduates (12 men, 12 women) read a scenario in which they formed an impression of nine people who had left their first name on an answering machine. Participants rated the extent to which seven characteristics (Ethical, Caring, Popular, Cheerful, Successful, Masculine, Feminine) applied to people whose first names were gender-ambiguous (e.g., Chris), male (e.g., Ken) or female (e.g., Pam). People with gender-ambiguous names were rated less Ethical than those with female names, and people with gender-ambiguous names and male names were rated less Caring, less Cheerful, and less Feminine than those with female names. These results are consistent with the idea that there is a bias towards assuming that a person of unspecified sex is a male.

Abstract:

No ancient authority has left us a clear account of how the judges at the Athenian dramatic festivals operated. We can therefore never know for certain what happened. But it may be possible to improve the reconstruction normally given, which does not look as if it could ever have yielded acceptable results.One thing that is very clear (from Isocrates 17.33–4) is that the choice of judges was taken seriously. Not only did it involve the Council, the Prytanies, and the Treasurers, but any tampering with the panel from which the judges were eventually selected seems to have been punishable with death. Even the physical arrangements were quite complicated. Names approved by the Council were deposited in ten jars, one jar for each tribe but each jar containing several names, sealed by the Prytanies, held in safe-keeping on the Acropolis, and eventually brought down to the theatre, where the archon publicly broke the seals and drew out one name from each jar.At this stage of the process there emerged ten judges, one from each tribe. Their quality had been guaranteed by the Council's prior vetting of the panel, but their actual names were unpredictable because randomly selected from it. All had been done democratically and with equal representation of tribes, in perfect accord with normal Athenian practice.But now comes the difficulty. The paroemiographers record a proverb (or rather perhaps a joke since it seems to be a kind of parody of a Homeric verse) about judgement being in the lap of five judges — ⋯ν π⋯ντε κριτ⋯ν γούνασι κεῖται; Lysias tells us of a judge whose vote was not counted; and Lucian, who likes to disguise a very careful antiquarianism behind an apparent casualness of style, says that at festival competitions the many know how to clap and hiss but that judgement is in the hands of seven or five or however many.

Abstract:

This work presents a critical nomenclatural review of the Acalypha species of the Western Indian Ocean Region (Madagascar, the Comoros Archipelago, the Mascarene Islands and the Seychelles Archipelago). This is the first treatment of Acalypha of Madagascar since Leandri’s monograph in 1942. A total of 151 scientific names related to Acalypha from this region are treated. We recognise 35 species (28 native and seven introduced), treat 93 names as synonyms (28 of them for the first time) and identify three as doubtful or excluded names. We designate lectotypes for 41 names, make two new combinations and propose one new name.

Abstract:

A revised classification for the world jumping plant-lice (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) is presented comprising all published family and genus-group names. The new classification consists of eight families: Aphalaridae, Carsidaridae, Calophyidae, Homotomidae, Liviidae, Phacopteronidae, Psyllidae and Triozidae. The Aphalaridae, Liviidae and Psyllidae are redefined, 20 family-group names as well as 28 genus-group names are synonymised, and one replacement name is proposed [Sureaca nomen nov., for Acaerus Loginova, 1976]. Forty two new species combinations are proposed resulting from new genus-group synonymies and a replacement name. One subfamily and three genera are considered taxa incertae sedis, and one genus a nomen dubium. Finally eight unavailable names are listed ( one family-group and seven genus-group names).

[unranked] Melanocarpa), ten species (Dianthus moesiacus, Eryngium palmatum, Haplophyllum boissierianum, Hieracium schultzianum, Lactucopsis aurea, Lactucopsis brevirostris, Lactucopsis mulgedioides, Mulgedium sonchifolium, Picridium macrophyllum, Stachys anisochila), and one form (Gypsophila spergulifolia f. serbica) validly published in Roberto de Visiani and Josif Pančić’s work Plantae Serbicae Rariores aut Novae—Decas III, published in 1870, and one variety (Knautia macedonica var. lyrophylla) published in Verzeichnis der in Serbien wildwachsenden Phanerogamen (1856). Additional nomenclatural notes deal with three other species, five new combinations, seven invalid names and one invalid combination that were also discussed or published in Visiani & Pančić (1870). 59 men and 108 women university students rated their first, middle, and last names on seven-point Likert scales. Also, they responded to the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory and the Crowne-Marlowe Social Desirability Scale. Analysis indicated significant sex differences only on the self-esteem measure. Both men and women who scored higher in self-esteem liked their first, middle, and last names better. Persons who had stronger preferences for their own first or last names tended to score higher on social desirability.

The present study is an investigation of the Preferences of Bedouin first- names in central Bedouin tribes (Al-dʒiiza District) in Jordan from the semantic and sociolinguistic points of view. This study aims at exploring the semantic meanings of the Bedouin first- names (Note 1). It, also, aims at discussing the socio-cultural influences that come behind these Bedouin personal first-names. To achieve the goal of this study, 177 personal names were collected from the passports of Bedouin people whose years of birth were from 1950 to 1960 registered in the Civil Status and Passport Department. Then names were classified into seven main categories based on their meanings and the socio-cultural factors that they reflect. For example, names taken from the surrounding environment, animal and birds, times of the day, plants, personality and body parts, weather, and travelling. As a result, we can conclude that Bedouin names aren’t arbitrary and carry semantic and sociolinguistic implications.

In this paper we present an updated checklist of mammals found in Meghalaya. Using online databases and search engines for available literature, we provide the scientific names, accepted English names, conservation status as per IUCN Red List, Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act schedules, appendices in CITES, local distribution status, endemism, last reported sighting, an account of previous studies carried out relative to mammals and a tentative bibliography of the mammalian species found in Meghalaya. A total of 162 species were found to be existing in the state with Chiropterans forming the largest group and 27 species found to be threatened, seven Near Threatened and seven Data Deficient.

Athyrium Roth is a terrestrial fern genus in Athyriaceae, mostly distributed in temperate and sub-tropical regions. In Malesia, this genus is confined to higher altitudes. We have scrutinised the names listed in the literature as well as those used from specimens housed in herbaria that are possibly true Athyrium. Of the 25 species names, 12 are attributed to the Philippines, eight are recognised from Java and seven from Borneo and Sumatra. Other parts of Malesia contribute fewer species. A list of names together with information on distribution and specimens examined is provided.

This research investigates the influence of phonological awareness on the learning of vocabulary in a foreign language. Thirty-seven Chinese-speaking third graders with high phonological awareness and 37 with low phonological awareness participated in multitrial word learning tasks involving nonnative sounding (English) new names paired with novel referents. The children also participated in three additional associative learning tasks: learning to associate novel native sounding names, familiar native names, and unfamiliar visual shapes with unfamiliar referents. Results indicated that children with lower phonological awareness learned both the novel nonnative names and the novel native names less accurately than children with higher phonological awareness and required more learning trials. However, these two groups did not differ in learning to associate familiar names or unfamiliar visual shapes with novel referents. The findings suggest that poor phonological awareness might slow nonnative acquisition of vocabulary via difficulty in constructing new phonological representations for new words.

Names originally proposed as provisional are validated as Leptonia cyanea comb. nov., L. cyanea var. occidentalis var. nov., and Inocephalus appressus sp. nov. Nolanea names that were illegitimate later homonyms are proposed as N. undatomarginata comb. nov. and N. papillatoides comb. nov., based on published replacement names. AbstractThe circumstances of a child’s birth define his or her starting point in life, and they will be inscribed in the child’s file, so to speak, by means of a set of rule-governed birth names. These ‘child names’ are perfectly suitable for this initial stage of life, but all Baatɔmbu aspire one day to replace this original set of ‘orthodox’ names by another orthodox name, an inherited title name, corresponding to an achieved social and spiritual status. Commoners and nobles have separate institutions of gɔɔbiru, ‘inherited title names’, but in both cases the successive bearers of a gɔɔbiru share an exemplary essence that each must honour and perpetuate with his life. Baatɔnu nobles bestow baptism names on children around the age of seven, allowing these young candidates for the various gɔɔbiru to be matched, according to their potential, with a name whose influence will guide them into adulthood. Joking names and teknonyms can be classified as non-orthodox or informal names and seem to fill a gap left by the orthodox names, allowing personal and family relations to be expressed and negotiated. These names carry no prestige, but their use affords pride and pleasure and, unlike orthodox names, they can be used without infringing ‘shame’-based taboos.

Mesochorinae is a widely distributed subfamily of ichneumonid wasps with approximately 900 described species (Yu et al., 2012), of which almost 90% belong to the cosmopolitan genus Mesochorus Gravenhorst (Broad et al., 2018). Since it is a very large genus, it has become a group of complex taxonomy and with numerous taxonomic conflicts (Araujo et al., 2018). Recent efforts were made aiming to resolve nomenclature problems present within Mesochorus (see Araujo & Vivallo, 2015; Kittel, 2016; Araujo et al. 2018). Specifically, Araujo & Vivallo (2015) and Araujo et al. (2018) proposed a total of 19 replacement names, of which two became primary homonyms of existing names (listed below) and seven were invalid, as Kittel (2016) and, in one case, Schwenke (2002), had previously proposed respective replacement names. Furthermore, Araujo et al. (2018) published an identification key for the World genera of Mesochorinae which includes Incurvarion Kasparyan. However, this genus was implicitly synonymized with Neurogenia Roman (Ctenopelmatinae: Perilissini) when Reshchikov et al. (2014) transferred the type (and only included) species, I. gorochovi Kasparyan, to Neurogenia. To resolve the taxonomic conflicts that remain within the subfamily Mesochorinae, seven new synonymies and two replacement names are proposed herein, together with a corrigendum for the identification key proposed by Araujo et al. (2018).

This is a catalogue of 1081 new nominal taxa and 372 new combinations or names with new ranks of available scientific names given to the oligochaetes in freshwater and marine families that have been described since the publication of the monograph by Brinkhurst & Jamieson (1971) and its supplement (Brinkhurst & Wetzel 1984). Eight names are listed for the family Alluroididae, seven for the Capilloventridae, 26 for the Haplotaxidae, 144 for the Lumbriculidae, 75 for the Naididae, two for the Opistocystidae, 11 for the Parvidrilidae, 51 for the Phreodrilidae, 34 for the Pristinidae, six for the Randiellidae, one for the Tiguassidae, and 1088 for the Tubificidae. In the Propappidae and the Narapidae there are no new names or combinations subsequent to 1984. Families with predominantly terrestrial species are excluded from this paper. More than half of the species-group names, 54.4%, belong to marine taxa.

We aim to increase understanding and improve taxonomy of seven names currently treated in Bacidia that were described from Russian territory based on material collected during 19th-century expeditions: Bacidia alborussula, B. freshfieldii, B. graminum, B. indigens, B. primigenia, B. subabbrevians, and B. xylophila. B. alborussula, B. graminum, and B. indigens are transferred here to Haematomma, Lecania, and Bacidina, respectively. Bacidia freshfieldii and B. subabbrevians belong in the Ramalinaceae and are provisionally kept in Bacidia even though none of them is congeneric with the type of that genus. B. primigenia belongs in Arthrorhaphis, but we refrain from making any new combination owing to its questionable status as a species distinct from A. grisea. B. xylophila is a younger synonym of Lecania subfuscula. We designate lectotypes for names previously not typified and for which syntypes exist: Lecidea alborussula, L. graminum, L. indigens, and L. subabbrevians.

Abstract:

The journal Brimleyana, published between 1979 and 1998 in 25 issues, contained a total of 84 new zoological names. The dates printed on the covers, footers of articles, and reprints conflict with actual publication dates in some instances, and as a result, some articles and taxonomic names have been cited with the incorrect year of publication. Discrepancies in year of publication affect nine names (two genus group, seven species group), and discrepancies in month of publication affect 21 names (one genus group, 20 species group). Therefore, the actual dates of publication, as established by mailing dates in the journal, are given for all issues of Brimleyana along with a complete list of new taxonomic names and new name combinations that appeared in the journal. Receipt date stamps on issues of Brimleyana from twelve libraries in the eastern United States were compared to the stated mailing dates, and receipt dates substantiate the validity of the mailing dates.
