Abstract:
This study aimed to explore variant transliterations of the same Arabic names in English by Arabic native speakers on Facebook; to find the distribution of English variant transliteration of Arabic names; the types of variant transliterations produced by Arabic speakers; the strategies they utilize in transliterating their names to English; and the sources of the variations in the English transliteration of the same Arabic name. A sample of 112 names with a total of 332 variant transliterations and 1139 occurrences (repeats) was collected from the author’s friends on Facebook. It was found that 59% of the Arabic names have 2 variant transliterations in English and 26% have 3 variants transliterations. Names with the highest number of variant transliterations are الجرف (35), محمد (7); محمود, يوسف, شريف, (6); نور نورة شيماء (5). Variants with the highest occurrences are الجرف (154), محمد (153); احمد (90); Ali (67); محمود (53); هناء & السيد(19). In 97% of the names in the sample, the variants differ in how the vowels/diphthong are represented in the English transliteration because Arabic and English differ in the number of vowels, vowel quality and vowel articulation. Arabic has 3 long vowels, 3 short vowels and 2 diphthongs, whereas English has 12 vowels and 8 diphthongs. In transliterating their names, Arabic consonant sounds for which two English graphemes exist were spelled differently. There are variations in transliterating Arabic surnames with the Arabic definite article /al/. In 18% of the names in the sample, the subjects transferred the Arabic spelling to the English transliteration of their names. The short vowel was not represented in the English transliteration. In 15%, the subjects transliterated their names the way they pronounce them in their local dialect (El-Garf in Egypt; Aljerf in Syria and Aljuruf in Palestine), not as the name is pronounced in Standard Arabic. In 17%, the subjects with a background in French transferred the French phoneme-grapheme representations of vowels and consonants to the English transliteration (Hicham, Aouatef). The study gives some recommendations for the correct transliteration of Arabic names to English.

Abstract:
The rendering of personal names from English into Ukrainian is complex activity with rigid rules. Personal names have six main functions: identification, reference, individualisation, differentiation, classification and categorisation. The proper names of people can signal gender, race, social class, age and nationality. Personal names have impoverished semantics and no reliable information can be gained from them. The names rendered improperly may bias or obscure reality. The signalling power of an English personal name in Ukrainian graphics is lower than that of the name in English graphics. The methods of rendering proper names are semantic translation, functional analogue, transliteration, transcription, transposition, tradition, tracing, half-tracing, euphonic rendering, explication, combined rendering, rendering a name in Latin without changes and transplantation. The strategies to render English anthroponyms into Ukrainian are based on these methods, the semantics of a name, its image and function, national and language specifics, a pragmatic task and the use of a dictionary. To convey people’s proper names in Ukrainian, it is necessary to make sure that the word calls a person, to identify the national and language origin of the name, to determine traditional variants and choose appropriate strategies. The personal name rendered becomes part of Ukrainian text.

Abstract:
This study reports the results of surveys of Slovene and English speakers’ responses to the sounds of fictional characters’ names. Responses were measured with two kinds of surveys – implicit and explicit – that gauged how readers reacted to the names of characters in Slovene rural novellas of the 19th and 20th centuries. The focus was on the initial sounds of names. The hypothesis was that certain sounds correlate with positive and negative names and that Slovene and English speakers would respond similarly to names of positive and negative fictional characters. If supported, the hypothesis justifies the practice of preserving personal names in translation. Evidence from the surveys showed that Slovene and English speakers’ responses to personal names were similar to a high degree.

Abstract:
This study aimed to explore how Arabic native speakers transliterate personal names containing geminates to English on social media and what transliteration anomalies they produce. A sample of 406 English transliterations of Arabic personal names with geminates by Arabic native speakers was compiled from Facebook and analyzed to find out the percentage of Arabic names in which geminates were transliterated into double consonants correctly; the percentage of Arabic names in which geminated consonants were reduced to a singleton consonant in the English transliteration; and the percentage of Arabic names where a singleton consonant was doubled in the English transliteration. It was found that one third of the Arabic name tokens with geminates were transliterated correctly, i.e., the geminated consonant in Arabic was represented by a double consonant in the corresponding English transliteration as in compound names (Abdullah, Noureddin) and Nassar, Algammal, Alqattan, Allam, Hagga and son. In 41% of the name tokens, the geminate was represented by a single consonant in the corresponding English transliteration as in Amouna, Amool, Elzahar, Hamam, Elnagar, Sedeek, Fatouh. In 26% of the English transliterations, a single consonant was doubled in the corresponding transliteration, although the Arabic name has no geminates and the consonant is pronounced as a single phoneme as in Ahmmed, Anass, Ossama, Quassem, Sammar, Wissam, Yassin, Youniss. The most commonly geminated consonant was the s which comprised 23% of the tokens. Since Arabic geminates are spelled with a single consonant and a diacritical mark ّ that is not usually shown in the written form used by Arab adults, Arabic speakers tended to transfer the spelling of Arabic geminates into a single consonant in English. They also overgeneralized double consonants in the English transliteration of Arabic names that are pronounced with a single consonant phoneme. Recommendations for improving the transliteration competence of personal names by Arabic native speakers on social media are given.

Abstract:
The article aims to shed some light on the growing tendency of Slovene native speakers towards borrowing English personal names when naming new-born children. Some historical overview of the borrowing of English personal names into Slovene is given, starting with lists compiled from 1931 onwards, established from the data supplied by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS). The phenomenon of borrowing personal names is discussed from the point of view of pragmatic borrowing as advocated by G. Andersen (2014), taking into account the traditional distinction between necessary loans on the one hand and luxury loans on the other. The article illustrates how in the case of personal names, ‘exoticisms’ (e.g. Alex, Liam, Kevin, Kim, Ian, Vanessa, Adrian, Ella, Emma, Patrick, Nick, Alan, Lucas, listed among the most popular 200 first names in the 2001–2013 period) compete with name forms that have been adapted and nativised long ago (e.g. Patrik), or are currently being introduced for the first time into Slovene. In these recent borrowings, the foreign forms undergo some adaptation, but at the same time, unlike other anglicisms, show the tendency to resist complete adaptation, particularly in terms of spelling and pronunciation. Such pragmatically borrowed items carry significant sociolinguistic signals about the borrowers’ attitudes, and these are briefly commented on.

The article aims to address the growing tendency of Slovene native speakers towards borrowing English personal names when naming their new-borns. Statistical data confirm that foreign (and, with that, English) names have increased in the past decades, and statistical lists illustrate how in the case of personal names, ’exoticisms’ (e.g. Liam, Patrick, Nick, listed among the most popular 200 first names in the 2001-2015 period) compete with name forms that have been adapted and nativised long ago (e.g. Patrik), or are currently being introduced for the first time into Slovene. The influx of name borrowings from English is discussed from the point of view of pragmatic borrowing as advocated by Andersen (2014). A historical overview of the borrowing of English personal names into Slovene is given, and the role of English as the model discussed. Such pragmatically borrowed items carry significant sociolinguistic signals about the borrowers’ attitudes, and these are analysed, based on questionnaires completed by parents of children aged 2-6. The significance of Anglo-American cultural influence is thus sought to be evaluated.

Abstract:
Personal names form one of the most important sections in the system of proper names that are traditionally studied within the field of onomastics. Personal names contain history, tradition, culture as well as all characteristic features of each ethnic community. The general aim of this research project is to have a cross-cultural approach to personal naming based on the systems of Vietnamese and English. Due to the broad scope of the topic of personal names, my research focuses on given names only. First of all, to establish a theoretical background, I dwell on onomastic problems with the focus on the semantic characterisation of proper names, and cultural issues in the study of personal names. I then argue that the views on meaning of names espoused by the Millian and Fregean schools can be reconciled, and that as a cultural universal, names convey both denotational and connotational contents but the content of names can only be determined in each specific language community based on clarification of traditional and cultural values embodied in naming process. Next, the thesis approaches Vietnamese and English given names by reviewing their historical and linguistic characteristics and then classifying them into relevant groups and subgroups. The main purpose of these taxonomies is to bring out the topological characteristics of Vietnamese and English given names as well as the naming trends and forces that have formed the two cultures over the past centuries. Finally, I present a comparison and contrast of Vietnamese and English given names covering all the aspects on the basis of which I institutionalise the theoretical reconciliation of Vietnamese and English personal naming systems, and establish that a reconciliation of the two naming systems is possible within a single overarching framework for their theoretical discussion.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses literary representations of personal proper name change from 1779 to 1800, arguing that these representations function as sites upon which cultural anxieties about social classification - in which notions of kinship, gender and class all play important roles - are negotiated. Reading imaginative prose literature by Frances Burney, Hester Thrale Piozzi, Charlotte Turner Smith and William Godwin alongside historical sources including journals and newspaper articles, tracts, letters, trial transcripts and legal judgments, I show that these representations of name change offer insights into how competing models of personal identity were envisaged to come into conflict. The thesis contributes to studies of eighteenth-century theories of language, by examining how proper names were understood to exist in relation to common names within lexicography and philosophy of the period. It seeks to enhance understanding of identity formation in the eighteenth century by arguing for the importance of naming practices in constructing identities through social mediations. It modifies the history of personal naming in England by offering original qualitative and quantitative research concerning the practice of surname change by Royal Licence. It argues that the eighteenth-century novel interrogates competing models of personal identity in dialogue with the laxity of English common law around issues of personal naming, which enables individuals in England to participate in a rich variety of self-fashioning practices. Finally, it offers a contribution to studies of eighteenth-century fame within the commercialised public sphere by arguing that excavating the mutation and material circulation of the personal proper name is key to understanding how ‘reputation’ worked to confer value and status.

Personal names carry significant meaning in African cultures. The research critically argues that among the Shona speaking people of Zimbabwe, given names are not just mere tags or labels but carry and convey a significant message to the family or society of the named person. The message is often descriptive of the person named or their family. It describes the circumstances around the birth of the named or the conditions of their parents or their country and or their environment. The research further shows that names derived from socio-cultural experiences may have a plurality of meanings and also that they may be used to predict or explain something about the person named, including their parents or environment. Philosophically then, to name is to confirm, or to negate, and to confer something to the person named or to describe the circumstances of their birth.

AbstractWith the continuous emergence of new network threat means, how to turn passive defense into active prediction, the rise of Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) technology provides a new idea. CTI technology can timely and effectively obtain all kinds of network security threat intelligence information to help security personnel quickly identify all kinds of attacks and make effective decisions in time. However, there are not only a large number of redundant information in threat intelligence information, but also the problems of Chinese English mixing, fuzzy boundary, and polysemy of related security entities. Therefore, identifying complex and valuable information from this information has become a great challenge. Through the research on the above problems, a named entity recognition model in the field of Network Threat Intelligence Based on BERT-BiLSTM-Self-Attention-CRF is proposed to identify the complex network threat intelligence entities in the text. Firstly, the dynamic word vector is obtained through Bert to fully represent the semantic information and solve the problem of polysemy of a word. Then the obtained word vector is used as the input of BiLSTM, and the context feature vector is obtained by BiLSTM. Then the output result is introduced into the self-attention mechanism to capture the correlation within the data or features, and finally the result is input into CRF for annotation. To verify the effectiveness of the model, experiments are carried out on the constructed network threat intelligence data set. The results show that the model significantly improves the effect of Threat Intelligence named entity recognition compared with several other classical models.

Abstract:
Anthroponymy mirrors faithfully the features and core values of people considered as individuals or as ethnic groups sharing common traits. Whether we refer to a religious name chosen for one’s child according to one’s personal beliefs, a foreign, trendy name, or an unusual name which ensures the bearer is easily distinguished, all anthroponyms convey a message. Depending on people’s particular way of perceiving integration in a foreign culture, some may choose to give their children names that are specific to their native culture to perpetuate their tradition; others may wish not to reveal their migrant background by naming their offspring in a way that is characteristic to the host culture. The present approach is both synchronic and diachronic. It follows naming practices in contemporary multicultural communities, at the same time illustrating how names are culturally embedded. The grounds for this perspective are provided by the analysis of a wide corpus of anthroponyms existing in sayings and proverbs pertaining to three different languages and cultures: Romanian, English and Italian.

Abstract:
Education has always been a subject to changes structure and content wise; its quality has been an issue all the time. In Latvia, the recent reform named School 2030, which essence is a competence approach to the curriculum, is introducing its requirements. Additionally, the government has planned to introduce a system monitoring the quality of education by 2023. Consequently, questions like what a good school, teacher and teaching are gain certain attention. The particular qualitative approach research concentrates on finding out student teachers’ answers to these questions as core values they remember to be the most significant ones to make them think of their schools, teachers and their teaching as good. The aim of the research is to examine how student teachers of English who have begun their teacher education studies recently perceive good teaching. To provide answers, they filled out Personal Statement – an introductory part of the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages. The research sample of the case study consists of 55 second and fourth year full and part-time students who have decided to become teachers of English. They are studying at the faculty of Education, Psychology and Art, the University of Latvia. To analyse student teachers’ opinions, content analysis was used. The data allows concluding that student teachers’ perception of good teaching is characterised by three key elements: good classroom management techniques, relevant teaching methodology and teachers’ personalities. Furthermore, student teachers of English are of the opinion that in good teaching environment teachers take into account their pupils’ personalities. The same ideas prevail in the answers revealing what student teachers want to master in their studies. That implies student teachers of English long to see academic staff at the university as role models of good teaching.

Effective and clear communication transfers information, creates an experience in others and causes a reaction. In personal or professional relationships, effective communication is hindered by social and cultural inhomogeneities, and this is the main cause of misunderstandings.Misunderstandings in voice communication have also been identified as the main cause of accidents at sea; although English is used and recognized as an official language for maritime communications, an incorrect pronunciation or accent can cause misunderstanding or even change meaning. Therefore, it is extremely useful to adopt models, protocols and rules aimed at reducing misunderstandings as much as possible.During the years, IMO (International Maritime Organization) has developed the Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP), a set of well-defined sentences, written in a very simplified English, aimed at mitigating the aforementioned problem. Past studies have shown that SMCP is not commonly used and difficulties to pronounce and understand English spoken by different nationalities remains.This paper presents an innovative communication system, developed by the University of Genoa with the collaboration of the Italian Coast Guard in the context the Maritime Interreg project ISIDE, that exploits the possibility of sending text messages through the AIS devices that boats are equipped with.Commercial vessels with a gross tonnage equal to or greater than 300 tons and all passenger ships (regardless of their size) are in fact obliged to equip themselves with the Automatic Identification System (AIS), essentially based on digital VHF radios that can transmit, in an automated and continuous manner, information such as ship name, type of ship, position, course and speed over ground, navigation conditions and other safety-related information.A user-friendly interface has been developed to assist the operator in selecting the appropriate message among those provided by the SMCP standard or alternatively to compose a personalized text, both in the beginning of a new conversation and in the reply to a previously received message. The system can be integrated in professional consoles, standard web interfaces and apps and also on wearable devices such as smart watches. The system takes care of transmitting and receiving information AIS device as the communication channel.The user interface has also been implemented in several languages (i.e., English, Italian, French…) and the received/transmitted SMCP messages are automatically translated into the native language of the operator, thus eliminating language barriers and reducing misunderstandings.The system has been tested during several SAR exercise with the support of the Italian Coast Guard and the results are presented in the full paper.In order to extend the application also to smaller leisure boats, the system will be experimented in the near future using Marine VHF devices able to transmit text messages according the RTCM 12301.1 standard proposed by the Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services.

In the article investigational three magazines which went out after Second World war in Germany and Austria in the environment of the Ukrainian emigrants, is «Theater» (edition of association of artists of the Ukrainian stage), «Student flag» (a magazine of the Ukrainian academic young people is in Austria), «Young friends» (a plastoviy magazine is for senior children and youth). The thematic structure of magazines, which is inferior the association of different on age, is considered, by vital experience and professional orientation of people in the conditions of the forced emigration, paid regard to graphic registration of magazines, which, without regard to absence of the proper publisher-polydiene bases, marked structuralness and expressiveness. A repertoire of periodicals of Ukrainian migration is in the American, English and French areas of occupation of Germany and Austria after Second world war, which consists of 200 names, strikes the tipologichnoy vseokhopnistyu and testifies to the high intellectual level of the moved persons, desire of yaknaynovishe, to realize the considerable potential in new terms with hope on transference of the purchased experience to Ukraine. On ruins of Europe for two-three years the network of the press, which could be proud of the European state is separately taken, is created. Different was a period of their appearance: from odnogo-dvokh there are to a few hundred numbers, that it is related to intensive migration of Ukrainians to the USA, Canada, countries of South America, Australia. But indisputable is a fact of forming of conceptions of newspapers and magazines, which it follows to study, doslidzhuvati and adjust them to present Ukrainian realities. Eligibility criteria: We will use the following inclusion criteria: 1) Document must mention by name or describe at least one intervention, strategy, program or policy to prevent alcohol, tobacco and legal cannabis use. 2) Document must contain enough information for the researchers to determine if the intervention, strategy, program or policy was aimed at modifying the social and/or built environment. 3) Intervention, strategy, program or policy must have been aimed at modifying the social and/or built environment, using the following definitions: Social environment: “…the immediate physical surroundings, social relationships, and cultural milieus within which defined groups of people function and interact…Social environments can be experienced at multiple scales, often simultaneously, including households, kin networks, neighborhoods, towns and cities, and regions…”; Built environment: “the surroundings or conditions designed and built through human intervention, where a person lives or operates”. 4) Document must mention that intervention/strategy/program/policy has been implemented within the last 30 years (1992-2022), whatever the setting, time frame, or subpopulation. 5) Document must be within the body of scientific literature (peer-reviewed articles, research journal commentaries, editorials, or perspective pieces), be a published book or book chapter, a government, multinational organization or non-profit organization report, or a dissertation/thesis. 6) Document must not be a conference abstract, public letter, speech transcript, budget report, independent website post or blog, or news article. 7) Document must be in English or Spanish. 8) Document must be open-source, publicly available online, or accessible through the INSP’s library services.
