Abstract:
In this thesis I argue that we should break with the dominant Kripkean tradition concerning natural kind terms and theoretical identity. I claim that there is just no interesting connection between the metaphysics and semantics of natural kind terms, and demonstrate this by constructing a version of descriptivism that is combined with the same metaphysics – that is, a nontrivial version of essentialism – found in Kripke, but which effectively avoids all of the standard criticisms. With my version of descriptivism in place, I present what I take to be the most reasonable version of metaphysical

In Wallace Stegner's Angle of Repose, the narrator wonders, "if ever again Americans can have that experience of returning to a home place so intimately known, profoundly felt, deeply loved, and absolutely submitted to." My manuscript, The Problem of Naming is an attempt to explore the idea of home, as both a place and a people, and to affirm it is still "profoundly felt." The poems examine how abstractions such as presence and absence, grief and joy matter due to their intersection with matter: the individual body; the land, time, weather, from which that body sprung; and also the family that

Lexical selection is the process whereby semantic concepts activate and ultimately select a word to be produced in speech. This thesis examined the similarities of bilingual and monolingual lexical selection in naming. Chapter 2 reports three experiments that examined lexical facilitation in the picture-word task. Similar results were found for bilinguals and monolinguals. When bilinguals named in Ll, and monolinguals produced common names, identical distractors (PERRO+perro, DOG+dog) produced facilitation, whereas translations (PERRO+dog) and synonyms (DOG+hound) had no effect. This thesis delineates the boundaries of theories of naming, placing particular emphasis on the demarcation of the semantic function of referring expressions from the pragmatics of referential usage. The need for such emphasis derives from frequent confusions in work on singular reference where pragmatic phenomena are used to refute semantic theories and vice versa. Part One of the thesis examines various conceptions of the semantic function of names.
