In this thesis I argue that we should break with the dominant Kripkean tradition concerning natural kind terms and theoretical identity. I claim that there is just no interesting connection between the metaphysics and semantics of natural kind terms, and demonstrate this by constructing a version of descriptivism that is combined with the same metaphysics – that is, a nontrivial version of essentialism – found in Kripke, but which effectively avoids all of the standard criticisms. Even after having achieved international fame with his fantastic stories, the Romantic writer E.T.A. Hoffmann considered himself more as a musician and composer than as a writer. In his theoretical writings about music, he extolled the value of dissonances, though he produced them rather more in his poetic works than in his musical compositions. These dissonances can be distinctly perceived in the proper names found in his fairy tale The King’s Bride which, with the exception of the river Main and the personal name Anna/ Ännchen, are all invented by Hoffmann.

Lexical selection is the process whereby semantic concepts activate and ultimately select a word to be produced in speech. This thesis examined the similarities of bilingual and monolingual lexical selection in naming. Chapter 2 reports three experiments that examined lexical facilitation in the picture-word task. Similar results were found for bilinguals and monolinguals. This thesis delineates the boundaries of theories of naming, placing particular emphasis on the demarcation of the semantic function of referring expressions from the pragmatics of referential usage. U disertaciji su istražene karakteristike mešovitih namena, kao urbanog fenomena i planerskog koncepta. Formulisan je poseban metodološki postupak, koji uključuje i redefinisanje indeksa mešovite namene, primenjen za istraživanje relacija između programske strukture grada i brojnih drugih parametara, čime je omogućeno formiranje utemeljenih stavova o savremenom gradu kao složenom sistemu. Konkretno područje izučavanja je grad Novi Sad i pet specifičnih susedstava, a na osnovu rezultata rada date su i preporuke za poboljšanje istraživanja i planiranja mešovitih namena.<br>The dissertation exami
