Abstract:

Abstract:
Combinations of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG, ReTain) and NAA gave better control of fruit drop of `Golden Delicious' than either alone. When the full rate of ReTain (50 g/A) was compared to a reduced rate of ReTain (86 g/ha) plus NAA, equivalent control of fruit drop of `Golden Delicious' resulted. ReTain delayed softening and starch depletion of `Golden Delicious' fruit. NAA in some cases promoted earlier fruit maturity; but when used in combination with ReTain, maturity was similar to ReTain-treated fruit. Fruit with the highest firmness and starch came out of cold storage in the best condi

Mature 'Jonagold', 'Elstar' and 'Golden Delicious' apple trees on M9 rootstock were sprayed with the most frequently used apple thinning compounds in the years 1995, 1996 and 1997. Net CO2 assimilation rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs) and internal CO2 concentration (ci) of apple leaves were measured a few days after carbaryl (800 ppm), terbacil (50 ppm), NAA (15 ppm), NAAm (50 ppm), BA (50 ppm) and ethephon (300 ppm) application. The strongest A suppression of leaves parallel with gs reduction and enhanced ci was observed with terbacil on all cultivars for all years. Carbaryl, NAA, and BA r

Experiments were conducted in commercial apple (Malus ×domestica) orchards in the southeastern U.S. between 1998 and 2006 with the primary objective of evaluating the effects of naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and ethephon on return bloom. NAA increased return bloom in six of 10 experiments, whereas ethephon increased return bloom in four of seven experiments. Four biweekly applications of 5 ppm NAA during June and July (early summer NAA) increased return bloom more consistently than fewer applications. Four weekly preharvest applications of 5 ppm NAA increased return bloom of ‘Delicious’ and ‘Go

Reducing apple crop load during bloom can increase fruit size and promote annual bearing when compared with crop reduction at later timings. In this study, we compared the efficacy of chemical blossom-thinning strategies on ‘Golden Delicious’ and ‘Gala’ apple trees. Several blossom-thinning treatments were evaluated, including 1) unthinned control (control), 2) hand-thinned (HT) at bloom, 3) liquid lime sulfur + Stylet-Oil (LS + SO), 4) ammonium thiosulfate (ATS), 5) endothall (ET), and 6) naphthaleneacetamide (NAD). Chemical treatments were applied twice during bloom, using a predictive model

?Astrobiology? is a term popularised in 1998 by a decision of the US space agency NASA to establish the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI). The then Administrator of NASA, Daniel Goldin, declared that ?biology will be the science of the 21st century?. The NAI was established to promote research aimed at gaining a fundamental understanding of the full potential of living systems. Its goal is to understand how life begins and evolves, whether life exists elsewhere in the universe, and what the future holds for life on Earth and beyond. To determine the effect of NAD on prevention of preharvest fruit drop of `Golden Delicious' apples, a range of studies were conducted for 2 years in the Kamalabad area in Karaj City-Iran. In this experiment NAD at 10 and 15 ppm concentrations were applied in two intervals of 2 and 3 weeks before harvesting (131 and 138 days after full bloom) and at the same time nontreated trees were used as control plants. The results indicate that applying NAD reduces the preharvest fruit drop percentage and then is followed by the yield increase. Fruit drop percentage, fruit weight, length, diameter and vol

The effect of plant growth regulator in early stages of fruit development is to slow or stop the growth of lateral fruits and to cause their early drop. Two commercial plant growth regulator formulations naphthalene-acetamide (NAD) and naphthaleneaceticacid (NAA) were used. The applied doses of plant growth regulator were in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, for Amidthin 100-130 g/hl and Nokad 20-25 ml/hl. The first treatment was applied after full bloom, and the second when central fruit was 9-12 mm in size. The biggest effect on fruit weight and size was recorded on treated

Apple growers of different regions need different chemical fruit-thinning responses for thinning trees of different tree ages, cultural conditions, rootstocks, climates, and amounts of fruit removal desired. In this research, a range of chemical thinning responses was achieved by combinations of thinning materials or addition of potentiating agents. Superior oil, certain organic phosphates, and a light-absorbing agent (ferbam, a fungicide) increased the thinning of carbaryl. In addition, combinations of 50 or 200 ml 6-BA/liter + carbaryl + oil defruited `Campbell Redchief Delicious'/M.111 tree

Abstract One goal of synthetic biology is to improve the efficiency and predictability of living cells by removing extraneous genes from their genomes. We demonstrate improved methods for engineering the genome of the metabolically versatile and naturally transformable bacterium Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 and apply them to a genome streamlining project. In Golden Transformation, linear DNA fragments constructed by Golden Gate Assembly are directly added to cells to create targeted deletions, edits, or additions to the chromosome. We tested the dispensability of 55 regions of the ADP1 chromosome

Calli were initiated from immature inflorescences of selected cultivars of Hosta in the light on Hosta initiation medium (Carolina Biological Supply Company, 1986). Three cultivars, Francee, Birchwood Park's Gold, and Wide Brim Sum & Substance, produced microshoots. The calli were compact and green in color. The highest percentage of callus formation occurred with the Francee cultivar. Nakaiana, Golden Edger, Golden Scepter, Obscura, Sum & Substance, and Shade Fanfare produced only calli.

Previous reports of somatic embryogenesis on rose tissues involved an embryogenic callus stage with either a complicated multi-step process or low numbers of embryos being produced. We have produced somatic embryos without a callus stage from leaf explants of the cut rose cultivar `Golden Emblem' by using a two step process. Explants were obtained from microshoots of `Golden Emblem' that had been in culture for three years. All experiments were repeated twice.
