"Molecular and anatomical study of the epipelagic copepod Oithona nana (Copepoda; Cyclopoida) Chitin distribution in the Oithona digestive and reproductive systems revealed by fluorescence microscopy New insights into global biogeography, population structure and natural selection from the genome of the epipelagic copepod Oithona Discovering millions of plankton genomic markers from the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea." Full textCopepods are the most numerous animals on Earth and play an essential role in the marine trophic web and biogeochemical cycles. In the epipelagic ocean, the genus Oithona is considered as one of the most abundant and widespread copepods. Despite the ecological importance, few internal anatomy and molecular data are available for copepods in general, and for Oithona in particular. We updated a protocol permitting to observe the digestif and reproductive systems of Oithona, but also to determine, for the first time, the chitin distribution inside these systems. We also made available the Oithona nana genome and transcriptomes at the different development stages. After comparative genomic analysis against other available copepod genomes, we observe an explosion of the Lin-12 Notch Repeat (LNR) protein domain in the O. nana genome. Using the Tara metagenomic data, we identified the population structure of O. nana in the Mediterranean Sea, but also detected loci under natural selection. Among them, five were LNR domain-containing protein-coding genes (LDPGs) whose three single-nucleotide mutations within LNR domain. While a ZW sex-determination system was predicted in O. nana, a fifteen-year time-series in the Toulon Little Bay showed a biased sex ratio toward females (male / female ratio < 0.15± 0.11) highlighting higher mortality in males. This can be explained by the “Oithona male paradox”: males have to alternate between feeding (immobile) and partner research (mobile) phases. As the molecular basis of this trade-off is unknown, we make a differential expression analysis. Twenty-four per cent of LDPGs were up-regulated in males. The male also showed enrichment in transcripts involved in proteolysis, the formation of new axons and dendrites, synapse assembly and functioning and even amino acid conversion to glutamate (an excitatory neurotransmitter). Moreover, several male down-regulated genes were involved in the increase of food uptake and digestion. The formation of LDP complexes was detected by yeast two-hybrid, with interactions involving proteases, extracellular matrix proteins and neurogenesis related proteins.Together, these results showed that the mating partner search of O. nana male is sustained by LDP-modulated autolysis that releases amino acid, convert them to the glutamate and permit a nervous system development. This could support a molecular-scale sacrificial behaviour in O. nana male

Full textAn analysis of Zolas Nana focusing on male desire. Through a study of the narrtive structure and the polemic relation between the concepts of “Nature” and “Culture” it is shown that opposing ideologies are imbedded in the text. Nana is a symbolic character, in large, a myth created by male desire that eventually becomes a manifestation of that desire. At the same time, however, the character Nana evolves from being a mirrored image of male desire into a more stable and real individual and this process is also an answer to when and why she dies, underlining the fact that she initially was a creation emanating from male desire and in losing those symbolic functions she loses her function in the novel.

Eschweilera nana is the only wide spread Lecythidoideae (Lecythidaceae) native to the Brazilian Cerrado. Floral evolution of this subfamily has occurred mostly in the androecium, probably in response to selective pressures by pollinators. Floral biology and the reproductive biology of this species and the behavior of the floral visitors were studied. There is no one-toone relashionship. The pollination system of E. nana involves a guild of pollinators of mostly bees, one wasp and one beetle, despite the difficulty to access the nectar.

Full textThe cyclopoid copepod Paracyclopina nana plays a key role in the trophic chains of the aquatic environments of Eastern Asia. It has a small adult size (600 μm), a short life cycle, a high fecundity, and can be easily cultured under medium salinity (15 psu) and a wide range of temperatures. Its whole genome has also been recently sequenced, assembled and annotated. All these assets give it a very interesting double potential for current research: as a test organism for risk assessment associated with aquatic pollutants (bioindicator), and as a live prey in mass culture for the feeding of fish larvae in aquaculture. In the framework of this PhD project, we aimed: (i) to test the productive and qualitative potential of P. nana in aquaculture in relation to the nature of the ingested microalgae diet; (ii) to establish the profile of P. nana as an ecotoxicological model through metal contaminant exposure tests. The effects of seven different microalgal diets constituted by Rhodomonas salina (R), Tisochrysis lutea (T), and Pavlova lutheri (P) on P. nana productivity in culture were explored. The R+T and R diets induced the highest population growth and the greatest reproductive investment in ovigerous females. Those same diets also generated the highest total fatty acid content in copepods, and the highest total monosaccharide content has been found in copepods fed R+T+P. Overall results demonstrated that all the diets including R. salina lead to an increasing productivity of P. nana, and particularly when combined with T. lutea in a mixed diet.Another study examined the effects of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and nickel (Ni), on two subpopulations of P. nana. A first experiment conducted on a regular P. nana culture showed a decreasing population growth but an increasing metal bioaccumulation in copepods. Cd was also more accumulated when it was alone than in the mixture with Cu and Ni, confirming the hypothesis of metal competition recently demonstrated in a calanoid copepod. A second experiment performed on a P. nana culture already exposed to a higher Cu concentration for several generations revealed a lesser impact on population growth and a lower metal accumulation in copepods. Increasing metal concentrations in the experimental water reflected the depuration happening in this metal-loaded population already acclimated to metal exposure.Overall results are the first ones showing that R. salina is a suitable microalga for productive mass culture of P. nana for use as live food for marine fish larval aquaculture, and to investigate the parameters influencing the bioaccumulation capacity of P. nana in response to metals in contaminated aquatic ecosystems

Full textThe Brazilian dwarf brocket (Mazama nana) is a deer species that occupies the forests of southern Brazil, north of Argentina and east of Paraguay. It has been greatly affected by the drastic reduction of forested areas. It is also the less studied neotropical deer. Considering this situation, this project aimed to shed light on the species distribution along its range, to indicate conservation priority areas and estimate the density of two populations. Given the rarity and high elusiveness of the species, it is proposed the use of indirect methods to achieve this goal. Fecal samples collection based methodologies were used, followed by DNA extraction and subsequent molecular and genetic analysis. Fecal samples were tracked and collected in protected areas spread over south Brazil, with the help of a scat detection dog. After species identification by PCR/RFLP and samples spatialization, species distribution modeling was carried out using Maxent software suit. Two protected areas were chosen for a faecal sampling based on transects, in order to estimate the population density. Potential geographical distribution of M. nana in Brazil was stablished at states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, northern and center Rio Grande do Sul, extreme South of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. Also at Eastern Paraguay and Missiones province in Argentina. Species density at the northern area of Iguaçu National Park was 1.9 ind/km2 and at the State Park of Vila Rica do Espírito Santo was 5.5 ind/km2. The species potential population was 152,991 individuals, including 15,524 individuals inside protected areas. It is suggested to maintain species conservation status as vulnerable on the Brazilian and on the International red list of threatened species.

Full textIn this thesis, we have undertaken a stylistic study of metonymy in Emile Zola's following four works : L'Assommoir, Une Page d'Amour, Nana and Pot-Bouille. In so doing, we have selected among the various study fields in stylistics those that allow to examine this figure which is permeating Zola's text. Our aim is to demonstrate that the figure constitutes a prevalence. Moreover, it accounts for the author's ceaseless discursive creativity. The metonymy we have found out throughout these texts shows itself under various typological, grammatical and enunciative forms. Besides, inserted into a literary text, it is the object of considerable pragmatic work on the fictional, thematic and symbolic levels and also on the aesthetic and literary plan. We have realised that a real poetic dimension emanates from the text thanks to the figure called metonymy. First, from the thematic point of view, and thanks to this figure, Zola was able to expose the ridicule of society under the Second Empire. He thus made use of this device in a remarkable way in order to relate literature to science and try to explain the relationship of man with his milieu. Second, thanks to metonymy, a number of lyric and poetic qualities animate the text. If metaphor is the device of imaginary, metonymy is that of “truth and light”, therefore of reality as well as of the imaginary. This characteristic makes metonymy an original trope of the “zolian” text, an actual “novel-poem”

Full textThe incursion of Islam in Sub-Saharan Africa from the 19th Century was operated through trans-Saharan commerce between the peoples of North Africa and those of the Sahel. This contact, maintained by the commercial caravans of these two peoples engendered the progressive islamisation of the Hausa-speaking populations. Under the influence of Arabic, several terms were introduced into Hausa lexicon. This Islamic effect comes with a revolution in the production of Arabic-Ajami literature. Thanks to the adaptation of Ajami writing, Nana Asma’u, a renowned polyglot, wrote several poetic works in the 18th Century, most of which are in the Hausa, Fulfulde and Arabic languages. On the basis of these observations, this thesis proposes to analyse the borrowed Arabic lexicon in the poetic works of the author, and their integration into the Hausa language. From the methodological perspective, our research work relies on a combination of two methods: linguistic and statistical; which enable us to analyse all the phenomena relating to linguistic and cultural hybridization in the works of Nana Asma’u. Our corpus is made up of poetic works that we have first of all lemmatized using statistical calculations with the help of Excel software. The principal results, obtained in the form graphs, indicate a frequency of very high usage of words borrowed from Arabic. The association of the linguistic and computer analyses enabled us to confirm, in a formal and impartial manner, that most of the frequent borrowings fall under religious domains, and as such linked to situational vocabulary

ABSTRACT: In this dissertation we carry out a comparative reading of two naturalistic novels (Emile Zola’s Nana and Abel Botelho’s O Livro de Alda) in the light of the construction of a poetics of eroticism. We have started by highlighting the realistic-naturalistic preference for the textualization of eroticism, especially in its pathological and disruptive aspects, and have pointed out the similarities and divergences between both texts regarding the representation of the female desire and the female body. We wouldn’t be able to lead a comparative analysis had we not heeded the 19th narrative tradition with a special emphasis on novels written during the second half of the century. We have focussed on a significant number of works that have brought about a new reflection on the metaphysics of love, seduction and sexuality, in explicit opposition to the romantic ideal of the asexual untouchable female. We have made a few theoretical considerations about the innovative concepts defining realistic-naturalistic aesthetics pertaining to the symbolic construction of an erotic imaginary, as formulated by a female subject that clearly states her desire. We have attempted to show that the hegemony of the scientific discourse at the time has decisively furthered the demystification of female sexuality. It has therefore become the object of scientific and literary investigation, opening new paths for the recognition of female exacerbated sexuality, shedding some lighton the perverse and pathological side of these women. According to the realistic-naturalistic principles, deviant sexual behaviour is a by-product of heredity, environment and education. In the second section, we have analysed the novels Nana and O Livro de Alda, so as to highlight the representation of female eroticism in terms of narrative techniques and their relation to the realistic-naturalistic thematic frame of reference.
