Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this article is, on the one hand, to present Jean-Luc Nancy’s thought about the deconstruction of Christianity and, on the other, to suggest its possible significance for the general study of religion. According to Nancy, who belongs to a line of thinkers spanning from Nietzsche through Heidegger to Derrida, Christianity initiated the loss of meaning (sens) which permeates the contemporary (notion of) the world. Yet, at the same time, Christianity opens an alterity in the midst of the world owing to the pre-Christian roots of Christ as a redeemer of this world. In a wider perspective, Nancy locates the emergence of religion in a first distinction (as between light and shade) from which the order of the world evolves. In modernity, however, this distinction, or ‘the divine’ as such, only greets us in passing, reflecting the relations between all things of the world which thus salute one another in mutual exposition, that is, in their ex-istence.

Greenshields, Jenny. "Nancy Cunard : collector, cosmopolitan." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2016. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/61105/.

Full text
Abstract:
Part One of my thesis reads Nancy Cunard (1896-1965) as a modernist collector, situating her material and literary collections in relation to the vogue nègre of the 1920s and 30s, when European fascination with black expressive culture reached unprecedented heights. It also looks at how Cunard's collecting practices translate into an ‘aesthetic of assemblage' in her work as an anthologist, and shows how the African sculpture section of her Negro anthology (1934) reflects the collecting cultures of early twentieth-century Europe. Part Two of my thesis reads Cunard in relation to cosmopolitan identity formations in the early twentieth century through an analysis of her poetry and private correspondence, and the fictional representations of Cunard that appeared in the novels of the period. It also examines her efforts to foster transnational networks between writers and artists across America, Europe and Africa, and the role her Communist politics played in forging these connections.

Sabick, Christopher Robert. "His Majesty's hired transport schooner Nancy." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/2190.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1997 a group of archaeologists from Texas A&M University's Nautical Archaeology Program traveled to Wasaga Beach, Ontario to document the hull remains of the eighteenth-century schooner Nancy. In 1927, the schooner was recovered from the banks of an island in the Nottawasaga River, near its confluence with Lake Huron. The hull is now on display in the Nancy Island Historic Site. Despite being available to the public for more than 75 years, the 1997 documentation was the first to thoroughly record the construction of the vessel. In addition to archaeological investigation, historical research was carried out to further our understanding of Nancy's commercial and naval career. The archaeological data reveal a schooner that was built by talented shipwrights using the fine timber harvested around the Great Lakes in the eighteenth-century. This study adds a considerable amount of new information to the otherwise scanty base of knowledge available on the construction of early Great Lakes sailing vessels. Historical research shows that Nancy and her crews were participants in many important events that shaped the Great Lakes Region. From her construction in Detroit in 1789, Nancy was employed in the fur trade. As tensions flared between Great Britain and the United States in 1812, Nancy was utilized as an armed transport for the British forces around the lakes. in August of 1814, the schooner was trapped in the Nottawasaga River by a strong American naval force. Nancy's commander set fire to the vessel to deny it to the enemy. This thesis examines the construction details and history of the schooner Nancy in detail. Preliminary chapters will provide the historical context for the vessel and describe Nancy's long journey that ended at the Nancy Island Historic Site. The second half of the thesis describes the construction of the schooner and compares it with other contemporary vessels. The study concludes that Nancy's hull represents an eighteeth-century construction tradition modified for use on the Great Lakes, and also demonstrates the vessel's dual roles as trader and military transport.

Whisenhunt, Elizabeth C. M. "Subsistence Practices at Nancy Patterson Village." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2021. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8975.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to gain an insight into the macrobotanical subsistence practices of Nancy Patterson Village and see how those practices fit in with the practices of the general Mesa Verde region by analyzing the burnt macrobotanical remains found in processed flotation samples. Previous work done at Nancy Patterson Village showed a shift in the faunal subsistence practices to a greater reliance on domesticated turkey during the Pueblo III period. However, the macro botanical analysis showed a higher richness of wild plant taxa in the Pueblo III period when compared to Pueblo II. The change to a higher richness of plant taxa in the later period is attributed to the changes in social and environmental climates causing difficulties in sustaining the population. These difficulties pushed the inhabitants to expand their selection of plant types used for food. Despite the higher richness of plant taxa in Pueblo III, other sites from the Central Mesa Verde region had higher richness. However, Nancy Patterson Village used the smaller number of wild plants types more intensely than the other sites from the region. No explanation was found to explain this difference.

Cronologicamente, isto ocorre na sua obra How the Laws of Physics Lie (1983).

Abstract : This dissertation aims to analyze the concepts of scientific models defended by Nancy Cartwright. Given her importance on the philosophical tradition we chose to make an inicial exposition of the notions of her philosophical program necessary to the further understanding of the notions of scientific models. Thus, we briefly approached her anti-realism of theories, even though this anti-realism is implicit throughout this text, after that we mention her realism of entities. Chronologicaly, this occurs in her book How the Laws of Physics Lie (1983). Where the author introduces the concept of scientific models as simulacra of the explanation. This concept rises from her questioning about the scientific laws being caracterized as true universal laws. Consequently, the laws lie and the theories are not able to provide us a reliable report related to the world. Therefore, by proposing the models as simulacra, the author also aims to provide a closer model of the explanation of scientific practice then the Deductive Nomological Model of Hempel. Afterwards, we mention the book Nature?s Capacities and Their Measurement (1989) in order to extract the concept of capacities which will be used in her posterior work, The Dappled World (1999). Where it is possible to find a more refined and sophisticated concept of models like blueprints of nomological machines. It is only in those models that the fundamental laws are true and work only in ceteris paribus. Finally, we make an analysis of the repercussion of Cartwright?s rich ideas. Indicating the positive aspects as well as the insuficient ones of her philosophical program.

Full text
Abstract:

Darity Jr., William, M’Balou M’Balou Camara, and Nancy MacLean. Setting the Record Straight on the Libertarian South African Economist W. H. Hutt and James M. Buchanan. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp184.

Full text
Abstract:
In their stormy response to Nancy MacLean’s book Democracy in Chains, some academics on the libertarian right have conducted a concerted defense of Nobel Laureate James Buchanan’s credentials as an anti-racist, or at least a non-racist. An odd component of their argument is a claim of innocence by association: the peripatetic South African economist and Mont Pelerin Society founding member William Harold Hutt was against apartheid; Buchanan was a friend and supporter of Hutt; therefore, Buchanan could not have been abetting segregationists with his support for public funding of segregationist private schools. At the core of this chain of argument is the inference that Hutt’s opposition to apartheid proves that Hutt himself was committed to racial equality. However, just as there were white supremacists who opposed slavery in the United States, we demonstrate Hutt was a white supremacist who opposed apartheid in South Africa. We document how Hutt embraced notions of black inferiority, even in The Economics of the Colour Bar, his most ferocious attack on apartheid. Whether or not innocence by association is a sound defense of anyone’s ideology or conduct, Hutt, himself, was not innocent of white supremacy.

Kelly, Luke. Humanitarian Evidence and Discourse Summary March 2025. Institute of Development Studies, 2025. https://doi.org/10.19088/k4dd.2025.029.

Full text
Abstract:
Monthly Humanitarian Evidence and Discourse Summaries aim to signpost FCDO and others to the latest relevant evidence and discourse on humanitarian action. It is structured around FCDO humanitarian framework themes: • Protect: Protect civilians, IDPs, refugees, marginalised groups including women and girls, and humanitarian access. • Prioritise: Prioritise effective humanitarian assistance to people in greatest need. • Prevent: Prevent and anticipate future shocks and rebuild resilience in protracted and recurring crises. Further detail on methodology and scope at the end. Click on the hyperlinks to bring you to the relevant literature. We hope this is a useful resource and you can read all the articles produced by brilliant authors and organisations(!), but each month we also invite a guest to identify their five 'star reads' from the wider list. This does not represent an organisational position or assessment of rigour, but rather a personal choice of published evidence, guidance or discourse that are of special interest or impact. This month, Nancy Bailey, from the Centre for Humanitarian Change, highlights her five 'star reads', chosen either because of their particular interest, quality, or relevance to this week’s cuts in American aid.

Maron, Nancy, and Peter Potter. TOME Stakeholder Value Assessment: Final Report. Association of American Universities, Association of Research Libraries, and Association of University Presses, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.29242/report.tome2023.

Full text
Abstract:
The Association of American Universities, the Association of Research Libraries, and the Association of University Presses have published a final report assessing the success of their five-year pilot project to encourage sustainable digital publication of and public access to scholarly books. The associations launched the Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem (TOME) project in 2018 to publish humanities and social science scholarship on the internet, where these peer-reviewed works can be fully integrated into the larger network of scholarly and scientific research. The project engaged a network of more than 60 university presses and ultimately produced more than 150 open-access scholarly works. The books cover a wide range of topics in many disciplines, including philosophy, history, political science, sociology, and gender and ethnic studies. The pilot was designed to last five years, and the sponsoring associations committed to assessing its value to its target audience at the end of that period. The report analyzes whether the community of authors, institutions, libraries, and presses that participated in the pilot found it helpful. Author Nancy Maron of BlueSky to BluePrint surveyed and interviewed authors and TOME contacts at participating institutions to assess how each benefited from the pilot—from increased global readership to stronger relationships among libraries, research deans, and faculty.
