Abstract:
Mechanical milling (alloying) is one of the non-equilibrium techniques used to prepare alloys with exceptional properties. This technique was employed in this research to develop a new class of Al- and Mg-based nanocomposite alloys using SPEX high energy milling. These nanocomposites are characterized by the dispersion of nanocrystals in an amorphous matrix. Zirconium was added to the Al-Mg alloys for the purpose of promoting glass formability. As-milled samples were annealed at 400°C for 1 hour to investigate the thermal stability of the nanostructure. The phase evolution of the resulting all

Research on metal nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesis and their applications for optoelectronic devices has been a recent interest in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology Photovoltaics are one of such systems in which MNPs have shown to be quite useful, due to unique physical, optical, magnetic, and electronic properties, including the metal nanoparticles synthesized in this research. Owing to the challenges with the most common physical and chemical methods of preparing MNPs, including the use of high temperatures, toxic reducing agents, and environmentally hazardous organic solvents, ther

Doctor of Philosophy
Department of Grain Science and Industry
X. Susan Sun
Biobased polymers derived from renewable resources are increasingly important due to acute concerns about the environmental issues and limited petroleum resources. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is such a polymer that has shown great potential to produce biodegradable plastics. However, low glass transition temperature (Tg), low thermal stability, slow biodegradation rate, and high cost limit its broad applications. This dissertation seeks to overcome these limitations by reinforcing PLA with inorganic nanoparticles a
