Abstract:
Reorienting Leadership Styles for Sustainable Education This paper describes the leadership style which can sustain education in Botswana community junior secondary schools (CJSS). The concept was examined based on the policy of education in Botswana, Botswana's vision for 2016 and the current situation in schools. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews from a random sample of community junior secondary school teachers and head-teachers in Botswana. The data suggests that the head-teacher's leadership style affects teachers' and pupils' attitude towards a job and studies and that a participatory leadership style promotes sustainable education in schools. These findings can be useful for education policy makers, school administrators and researchers seeking to promote sustainable improvement in education.

Abstract:
This study is aimed at exploring and describing the factors discouraging Laos students from schooling at a secondary school in various contexts such as classroom and school, individual student, family, and community contexts. Descriptive qualitative approach was used, and the framework of the study was formulated around the aspects of school and classroom situation, principal’s management process, teachers’ teaching organization and performance, parents’ involvement and perception, and community’s involvement and perception. The data were collected through observation, document analysis, and interview from 10 students, six teachers, one principal, one vice principal at Phonsyneua Junior Secondary School, and seven parents whose children were studying at this school. The finding shows that among the factors involved in students’ schooling at secondary school, several factors discourage them. The teachers’ performances were not perfect yet and some students’ competency was not qualified enough. The students’ parents were not highly committed and involved in their children’s schooling. The community had little trust in schooling since they perceived that schooling costs a lot of money. To improve these discouraging factors, several actions should be taken into consideration. The principal should ask all the teachers to communicate the vision and missions to the students, or the vision and mission should be published and socialized in the school. The observations on teachers’ instruction should be done by both the principal and senior teachers.

Abstract:
Since the inception of Western Education in Sierra Leone, frantic efforts have been made to formulate policies in order to improve the quality of education. It has been acknowledged by various educationists that curriculum implementation is instrumental in improving the quality of education in any society. Therefore, it is seen as an approach which improves students’ academic achievements, equipping graduates with sufficient knowledge and skills for them to survive academically and socially in this modern world. On that note, the development of school curriculum is very significant in the life of a nation. The National School Curriculum as a program of learning is supposed to be a highly sensitive document as it contains the aspiration of the nation, preparing its citizens to face future challenges. It is supposed to be a document of hope. Notwithstanding the wide recognition and acceptance accorded the roles of curriculum as a career of national philosophy in Sierra Leonean Educational system, there seems to be challenges in the implementation of this important blue print. This could not be disassociated with inadequate trained and qualified teachers in the field/classroom; community/volunteer teachers unpaid; ill-trained and sometimes confused graduates and inadequate Teaching Learning Materials; lack of guidelines for the implementation of curriculum and the complexity of managing the curriculum coupled with inadequate training regarding curriculum implementation. Capacitation of teachers is essential in the successful implementation of any curriculum as they are the main role-players in promoting quality education. This and other related problems should be a cause for concern. By and large, the researcher is optimistic that although people are different and despite the negativity and inadequacies surrounding the curriculum, there is hope that with time and effort and given the total commitment of all stakeholders to implement the curriculum, success can be attained. Especially with the President’s (Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio’s) New Direction Agenda on education in Sierra Leone. Therefore, it can be concluded that the aim of the study and primary research questions which were explored, namely the Challenges towards Curriculum Implementation in Four Selected Junior Secondary Schools in Kpanga Chiefdom, Pujehun District, were adequately addressed and answered.

Abstract:
The 2003 School Health Act of Taiwan stipulated that school campuses of senior high and below should be smoke free, but data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey show that the majority of students are exposed to smoke in public and at home. More than 50% of nonsmokers indicated that they had been exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS) in public places, with the exposure rate as high as 90% among smokers. More than 40% of junior and senior high school students were exposed to SHS at home. Support for banning smoking in public places ranged from almost 60% to almost 80%. More than 60% of current smokers and almost 90% of never smokers think that smoke from others is harmful to them. With a clear body of evidence detailing the harmful effects, reduction and eventual elimination of exposure to SHS should be the goal of the tobacco control community.

Abstract:
This study was carried out to assess administrative strategies for enhancing Peace Education (PE) in 29 Junior Secondary Schools in the region of Agadez, Niger Republic. The study was descriptive. Quantitative and non- parametric data that helped determine majority views were collected, tallied, converted into simple percentages and means using a calculator. Information from documents that were initially in French was translated into English. The research used a total population of 487 teachers and school administrators from 29 Junior Secondary Schools in the region of Agadez. All the 84 administrators from the 29 Junior Secondary Schools were included in the research as their number was small; 388 teachers were sampled out of 403 using the Research Advisors’ Sample Size Table and Simple Random Technique. The research instrument was a self-designed structured questionnaire titled Administrative Strategies for Enhancing Peace Education Questionnaire, which was validated and had a reliability index of .75. This paper dealt with the curriculum content that could enhance Peace Education in Junior Secondary Schools in the region of Agadez. The findings revealed that the Peace Education curriculum content was scanty. The study recommended, among others, that the Junior Secondary Schools Peace Education curriculum should be revised, and should therefore encompass relevant issues that would mould the students’ minds, issues that would help them to learn to live together and enhance mutual understanding in community; to this end, the Peace Education curriculum should mainstream Human Rights Education, Conflict Resolution Education, Disarmament Education, Development Education, International Education, Civics and any other type of education that is likely to bar the students from getting involved in violent conflict or even terrorism.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe Indonesian government has recognized the importance of English by including it in the education system for five decades. English has been integrated into secondary school for a long time. English exerts a stronger influence in the modern world and has become an international language. There are also advantages to introducing foreign languages to young students. Therefore, the Indonesian government made a policy to introduce English starting, elementary, middle and high school. At Katapang 1 Junior High School, this policy is optional. That depends on the demands of the school and the community. Schools and communities are responsible for providing teachers, curriculum and facilities. The teacher is one of the most important parts of the educational discourse and teaching and learning process in school. The two research questions formulated are: 1) what problems are faced by teachers in teaching? 2) how they find out the solutions? These questions urged the study to conduct a research at Katapang 1 junior high school. Three English teachers were chosen as respondents. In qualitative descriptive method, the interview was implemented to collect the data. As a result the teachers believe that providing good teaching materials can increase positive outcomes for student, the implementation program for teaching English at Katapang 1 Junior High School was very good as a stage of introducing foreign languages before they continued to higher education. Schistosomiasis is among the most prevalent but neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). It is a human disease caused by the parasitic infection of the blood trematode worm belonging to the family Schistosomatidae A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence and intensity of Schistosoma haematobium infection among the students of the Government Day Junior Secondary School (GDJSS) Garki in Jigawa State for a period of 17 days. A total of 120 students from class 1-3, who randomly participated in the study, were diagnosed for the S. haematobium infection. The intensity of the infection was assessed by counting and recording the number of eggs present in the 10ml urine samples of the positive individuals. The results obtained showed a 25% prevalence of the S. haematobium infection among the students. The students in contact with the water bodies in the community were infected more as compared to the students who did not have any contact with the water bodies (odd ratio = 0.002). The positive predictive value recorded at 93.3% quantified the diagnostic test employed (syringe filtration method) and the negative predictive value of 97.8% showed that the prevalence of S. haematobium infection was marginal among the student population. The gender of the students did not relate significantly (p < 0.05) with the results of the diagnosis, as more male students were infected than female students (odd ratio = 1.455). The students’ age group related significantly (p < 0.05) with the results and the students of the age group 14-15 years were more infected than those of the age group 12-13 years (odd ratio = 0.337). There were many more eggs in the urine samples of the positive students than the Poisson distribution would predict. Therefore, the model assumes that the intensity of S. haematobium infection is very high and thus the students should be treated and prevented from further exposure.

Abstract:
When gifted Māori students feel they belong and find their realities reflected in the curriculum, conversations and interactions of schooling, they are more likely to engage in programmes of learning and experience greater school success. This article reports on a teacher-led project called the Ruamano Project, which investigated whether Maker and Zimmerman's (2008) Real Engagement in Active Problem Solving model (REAPS) could be adapted successfully to identify talents and benefit the student achievement and engagement of Māori boys in two rural Northland, New Zealand secondary school contexts. The project aimed to implement Treaty of Waitangi-responsive and place-based science practices by improving home–school–community relationships through the authentic engagement of whānau and iwi into the schools’ planning, implementation and evaluation of a REAPS unit. As a result of this innovation, teachers’ perceptions of Māori boys shifted, their teaching practices changed, more junior secondary Māori boys were identified as gifted by way of improved academic performance, and iwi and community members were engaged in co-designing the inquiry projects. Our research indicated that the local adaptation of the REAPS model was effective in engaging and promoting the success of gifted and talented Māori boys.

Abstract:
In adolescence, externalized problems such as risk taking and antisocial behavior are more frequent in boys. This suggests that there are differences in the way boys and girls evaluate risk and make decisions during this period. To explore decision making and highlight possible gender differences, 124 adolescents at a junior secondary school completed two decision-making tasks: The Iowa Gambling Task (Bechara, Damasio, Damasio, & Anderson, 1994) and the Rogers Betting Task (Rogers et al., 1999). The results indicate that girls make more advantageous decisions on the Gambling Task and boys take more risks during the Betting Task. These results are discussed in light of the differing development of emotion, cognition, and brain structures in boys and girls.

Abstract:
Provision of education as a global social service is champion by the public sector. Where these education facilities are located influences their utilization and efficiency. Proximity to these facilities also influences decisions to seek and patronize them. The study analyzes the geo-spatial database and distribution of Government Secondary Schools, using GIS in Chikun Local Government Area. 28 Government Secondary Schools were identified. Their geographic coordinates were established by the use of GPS device and mapped out. The data generated from the field was used to create geo-database of Government Secondary Schools. From the study, 51.4% of registered students were enrolled in the Government Junior Secondary Schools cadre while 58.6% was in Government Senior Secondary Schools. 79% of the student’s enrolments were concentrated in three communities. Nasarawa community was 43.3%, Sabo-Tasha community was 19.4% and Narayi community was 16.5%. These communities form part of Kaduna metropolis with evidence of high population concentration. Queries from the database show only 21.4% of the Schools were with fenced, 7.1% of the schools were with school halls, 25% of the schools were with school libraries and 14.3% of the schools were with computers. The distribution pattern was found to be appearing not different than random using the ArcGIS auto-correlation analysis tool. Government Secondary Schools in the study area appear to be poorly equipped for conducive learning experience. Therefore, the study recommends schools expansion, provision of new schools and upgrading existing schools to standard by all stakeholders.

Background: Unintended pregnancies resulting in several maternal morbidities and mortalities are still a major public health challenge in most parts of the world. Female secondary school students are particularly vulnerable due to their engagement in unsafe sex and low uptake of family planning services. The study assessed respondents’ level of knowledge on, attitude to and practice of family planning. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 240 consenting female junior secondary school students in two public schools in Ogbomoso, South West Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling method was employed in recruiting the study participants and facilitated self-administered semi-structured questionnaire used for data collection. Descriptive statistics was done and Chi-square test used to compare categorical variables. The level of statistical significance was set at p <0.05.Results: The mean age of the respondents was 13.6±2.3 and 69.5% of them were early adolescents (10-13years of age). Almost all (92.3%) of the respondents were aware of family planning but only 58.1% and 55.3% of them had good knowledge on and positive attitudes towards family planning respectively. In all, 64.0% of the sexually active respondents had ever used family planning. Condom was the commonest family planning method ever used; reported by 65.0% of those who had ever used family planning. Fear of side effects was the main reason among non-users.Conclusions: Family planning uptake among sexually active female students is low in Southwest Nigeria. There is urgent need for aggressive awareness campaigns to improve the knowledge score and attitude of students to family planning in Nigeria.

Natural science teachers at Sijunjung Regency Junior High School must teach science and crafts subjects in meeting the teaching load in their respective schools. 65% of the science teachers at the Sijunjung district junior secondary school teach prakarya subjects. Provision of assistance activities can be used as a solution that is expected to motivate teachers to continue to improve their competence. Before the service community activities are carried out then disseminate questionare to see the initial conditions in more detail in the learning of prakarya so that it can be used as a reference in the implementation of applied science mentoring activities in prakarya learning. The questionnaire was distributed using the Gutman scale. The distribution of the questionnaire was carried out on July 13, 2019 before the mentoring activities began. Analysis of the data used is descriptive data analysis. The analysis showed that the junior high school science teachers in Sijunjung Regency were still not professional in teaching crafts at school. This is due to the still lack of application of science / science in learning prakarya. Prakarya subjects have four material aspects, namely: crafts, engineering, cultivation, and processing. The material aspect of crafts is more dominantly taught by science teachers in craft subjects even though this material aspect is more appropriate to be taught by arts / culture teachers. In addition, there are still very few natural science teachers who are able to compile craft teaching materials. Therefore, the results of this initial condition analysis can be used as a reference in the implementation of applied natural science mentoring activities in prakarya learning so that it suits the needs.

One indicator that can be used as a success in the educational process is the value of students' mathematical literacy abilities. In Satu Atap Aek Natas Junior Secondary School out of 122 samples, the results of 87 students are still relatively low. Mathematical literacy is influenced by, among others, the interest in reading mathematics and low family social support. For this reason, the solution offered in the implementation of community service is to carry out learning activities using a recitation-assisted PMR approach, the application of the principle of economic tokens accompanied by the use of a contact book. Participants in the implementation of this service consisted of 30 students, 30 parents/guardians of students, and 15 teachers. Based on the results of the implementation of community service there is an increase in the average value of literacy skills, interest in reading and social support of the family before the implementation and after the implementation of service.

Abstract:
Refugees in transit often have no access to formal education. Indonesia as one of transit countries has allowed these community school-age children to join public school. Unfortunately, teenagers and adults do not have similar consent. As most of them are stranded for a long time to skip their basic education, there should be a bridge so that they still can catch up with their secondary or even higher education level. During their uncertain waiting time, some international and national organizations and local institutions have provided them with private classes in specific subjects. The problem is these classes are unaligned with the lesson grade in host country formal education institution, which is categorized based on learners’ ages. Moreover, they are placed in separated places (detention centre, interception, community housings) which cost time and fare to get these refugees in one education centre. The alternative solution for handling this situation is by having blended learning, a combination of online learning platform and face-to-face meeting managed by teachers both from the host country and refugees. These students although they are limited by any means, have been familiar with ICT such as Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Multimedia and Internet. The online learning platform will muddle through time and distance in order to support them to take Package A, B, C (National Elementary, Junior and Senior High School Equivalency) tests as these tests are admitted at work and further study in host country as well as their destination countries without age limitation.

Abstract:
This paper aims to provide a brief overview and review of the research conducted by Ofodu Graceful Onovughe under the title Sociolinguistics Inputs and English as Second Language Classrooms published by the Canadian Center of Science and Education. Using descriptive qualitative analysis, this paper tries to understand what sociolinguistic influences are most significant from the researchers' perspective. The sociolinguistic influence in language acquisition and the use of English as a second language in the classroom are the main focus of this study. This article is intended to provide a brief review of the sociolingistics influences of the most significant use of second language in the classroom. The findings in this study see that the research of Ofodu Graceful Onovughe using the design of this study adopted survey research with the population taken consisted of all secondary school students at Akure Regional Government of Ondo, Nigeria. The number of students in the sample was 240 high school students who were deliberately selected from 6 schools randomly. Used for data collection is a questionnaire of 14 items designated to obtain the information needed. The instrument trials were also carried out in this study to community junior secondary schools in Ekiti State. From the 5 existing hypotheses, the findings reveal that parent work is one of the significant sociolinguistic influences on the use of English in middle school students, other findings also reveal that gender, ages, religion, and student classes will not significantly influence the use of English in middle school students in their classrooms. Therefore, the findings of this study will illustrate whether the articles "Sociolinguistics Inputs and English as Second Language Classrooms" published by Canadian Center of Science and Education written by Ofodu Graceful Onovughe can be replicated in the same field or simply become a reference reading in the field of sociolinguistics.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Menstruation is a phenomenon unique to the females and menstrual hygiene is still a problem for adolescent girls especially in low and middle income countries particularly when attending school. This issue is insufficiently acknowledged and has not received adequate attention in the reproductive health sectors in developing countries including Ghana and its relationship with the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). OBJECTIVES: This study examined the knowledge and practices of menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls, the cultural beliefs that influence menstrual hygiene practices, and the problems adolescent girls face in practicing menstrual hygiene. METHODOLOGY: A quantitative research method using descriptive cross-sectional survey design was employed in the study. Using a multi-staged sampling technique, a sample size of 151 adolescents in Juniors High schools who had reached menarche was selected from four (4) schools located in Asamang, Sekyere south District of Ashanti region of Ghana. Data was collected through a researchers’ constructed and validated questionnaire titled “Adolescents knowledge and practice of menstrual hygiene questionnaire (AKPMHQ)”. Data was analysed using simple frequencies and percentages. RESULTS: The study revealed that 68(45%) of the girls were in the Junior High School three (JHS3) and 88(58.5%) of them ranged between 14-15 years. Most of them (74.2%) had pre-menarche education given by their family members. Most of the parents 94(62.3%) had secondary education. Majority of the girls practiced good menstrual hygiene. Their culture does not exert much influence on their knowledge and practices of menstrual hygiene. However, there were some myths which are not scientifically based. Most of the girls experience some challenges during menstruation such as lower abdominal pain 77(51.0%) and unavailability of facility in school to change during menstruation 61(40.4%). CONCLUSION: The adolescent girls are knowledgeable about menstrual hygiene and also have good menstrual hygiene practices. However, there exist few cultural practices in the community that may have negative effect on their knowledge and practice of menstrual hygiene in the midst of some physical and social challenges experienced by the adolescents during menstruation.

Abstract:
High schools in the United States are taking a fresh look at the future of career and technical education with the implementation of new learning pathways that lead directly to the workforce, including the nondestructive testing (NDT) industry. These programs directly connect high school curriculums with post-secondary education and employment, reaching kids as young as junior high. This resurgence in technical education can be traced to the current demand for “new collar” jobs—jobs that require a post-secondary degree, although not necessarily a four-year college degree. The demand for new collar jobs continues to increase, as millions of jobs requiring only a high school diploma have disappeared. Harvard’s influential Pathways to Prosperity report, released in 2011, warned that nearly two-thirds of new jobs of the 2010s would require more than a high school education—yet only 40% of Americans had obtained an associate’s or bachelor’s degree by their mid-20s (Harvard 2011). In response, a new vision of 21st century vocational training is emerging across the United States. Vocational education has traditionally taught students how to weld or how to fix a car. Today’s career and technical education encompasses a wide variety of industries and skills. Students are learning to code software, design websites, or operate robots and artificial intelligence systems that have replaced manual labor jobs across much of the economy. Through new technical and career programs, high school students have the opportunity to learn valuable skills, gain job experience and support from participating sponsor companies and mentors, and complete coursework to graduate with a high school diploma and, often, an associate’s degree as well. This article explores new high school technical and career programs in Texas, Minnesota, and North Carolina that specifically provide a pathway to careers in NDT. These new initiatives are fueled by the desires of students, parents, and educators for options outside of the traditional four-year college path, as well as urgent workforce needs within industry. Support from local industry and academia (such as community colleges) are essential to the success of the programs.

Abstract:
The correctional institutions developing nowadays adopts a penal system that is more educating and fostering. Formerly, correctional institutions adhered to a prison system that was more of a punishment for crimes committed by the criminals. In general, fostering the prisoners aims to make prisoners to be fully human through the strengthening of faith (mental endurance) as well as to foster the prisoners to be able to integrate naturally in prison and in a wider life (community) after serving their convictions. This study on the protection of self-development right for convicted criminals in the environment of class IIA correctional institutions of Bengkulu was an empirical legal research that aimed to find out and to analyze the implementation of protection of self-development right for prisoners as well as to find out and to analyze the obstacles faced in implementing the protection of self-development right for prisoners in the environment of class IIA correctional institutions of Bengkulu. Data sources of this research were primary and secondary data. Data collection methods applied in this study were interviews and documentation. The data processing method used was descriptive qualitative. From the results of the study, it was revealed that: 1) the implementation of the fulfillment of juvenile prisoners’ right to obtain education at the class IIA correctional institutions of Bengkulu had not been fully fulfilled. To fulfill the educational process, there are Program Kejar (Kelompok Belajar/Study Group) of Package A (equivalent to elementary school), Package B (equivalent to junior high school), and Package C (equivalent to high school) as a series of processes for fulfilling the right for education for juvenile prisoners. But the program had not run optimally according to standards set by the government. Most of the juvenile prisoners make self-taught learning; 2) in the implementation of the education process in prisons, there were several factors that become obstacles in its implementation. These factors included the lack of partners to carry out the process of fulfilling the right for education, the facilities available in correctional institutions were inadequate, the limited teaching staffs provided by the local Education Department, lack of supervision on juvenile prisoners if they were pursuing education outside correctional institutions, as well as minimal budget allocations for educational purpose in correctional institutions.

While funds sourced from APBD districts / cities distributed by the government district / city to each school / madrasah. This PSG fund is used for school operational costs The mechanism for accounting for the allocation of PSG funds in schools should be arranged in order to be balanced. This means that the money out must be in accordance with the entry money as evidenced by the bill of expenditure. Then the note is attached with the letter of accountability (SPJ) reported to the financial department of the education department once every three months. Suggestion that the sharing of funds from districts / municipalities should not be delivered late in the provincial government about the amount of fund sharing and reporting from school to government on the number of students and must be on target until there is no delay in receiving assistance from the province.

Abstract:
Anatole Vakhnyanin is one of the most representative of the Galician intellectuals, who in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the conditions of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy selflessly worked on the field of awareness of Ukrainians as a separate nation. Scientific and pedagogical, public-political, musical and cultural activities contributed significantly not only to the formation of the cultural and educational level of the population of Galicia, but also to the close unity of the entire Ukrainian people. In his student years, he started the activity of the student community structures “Hromada” (Przemysl) and “Sich” (Vienna), with whom the memory of Taras Shevchenko for the first time was honored. In Lviv, together with the like-minded people, A. Vakhnyanin initiated the cultural and educational organization “Prosvita” and lead its work in the years 1868–70. He also edited the daily “Pravda” newspaper in Lviv, initiated with the assistance of P. Kulish and O. Konysky and collaborated with other publications, including the “Dilo” Lviv newspaper, in which he published historical and pedagogical explorations, organized the work of music societies “Torban” and “Boyan”, for which he prepared a lot of his own compositions and arrangements of folk songs, and later made a lot of effort in the case of opening of the Higher Institute of Music named after M. Lysenko in Lviv. After graduation from Lviv and later the Przemysl Theological Seminary, A. Vakhnyanin received his first pedagogical experience, teaching rus'ka (Ukrainian), Old-Slavic, Old-Polish and Latin languages in the Przemysl High School for two years. However, he became a real teacher after graduating from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Vienna in Lviv Academic High School with the Ukrainian language of teaching, where he became a professor. During this period (1873) A. Vakhnyanin prepared a “A Short Sketch of the Geography for the Junior Classes of Secondary Schools”, and later, in 1884, he wrote an original Ukrainian-language textbook on geography “Geography textbook for secondary schools”, which for many years was an important source of geographical knowledge for high school students. A. Vakhnyanin throughout his adult life wrote music, although he did not consider himself a professional. The opera “Kupala”, which was set in Kharkiv in 21 years after the death of the composer, became the peak of his composer's art. Extremely diverse range of public-political activities of Anatol Vakhnyanin, who, with the circle of like-minded people, managed to organize the work of several public-cultural structures, in particular Prosvita, and subsequently the political organization “People's Council”, which made his name in Galicia widely popular among Rusyn-Ukrainians, so they repeatedly elected him as a deputy to the Galician Sejm and the Vienna Parliament (1894–1900). Key words: teacher, Professor, author of the textbook on geography, composer, public figure, “Prosvita”, politician, deputy.
