Abstract:
Photovoltaic (PV) devices based on PbS quantum dot (QD) solids demonstrate high photon-to-electron conversion yields. However, record power conversion efficiencies remain limited mainly due to bulk and interfacial defects in the light absorbing material (QD solids). Interfacial defects can be formed when a semiconductor, such as QD solid, is contacted by another material and may predetermine the semiconductor/metal or semiconductor/metal-oxide junction properties. The objective of the work described in this dissertation was set to explore whether electrochemical contacting using liquid electro

The Next Generation Science Standards represent a significant challenge for K-12 school reform in the United States in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines (NSTA, 2012). One important difference between the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 1996) and the Next Generation Science Standards (Achieve, 2013) is the more extensive inclusion of nanoscale science and technology. Teacher PD is a key vehicle for implementing this STEM education reform effort (NRC, 2012; Smith, 2001). The context of this dissertation study is Project Nanoscience and Nanotechnol

Transferring nanotechnology into marketable products and services is still considered a major challenge. In Europe, this issue has been identified as a weakness, not only for nanotechnology, but also for the other five Key Enabling Technologies (KETs), strategic for the economic growth of the region. In this regard, the current European Funding Programme Horizon 2020 is making great efforts with their action lines in order to prioritize the industrial implementation of KETs, and in this manner, address major economic and societal needs. The Cold-Electron Bolometer (CEB) is a sensitive detector of millimeter-wave radiation, in which tunnel junctions are used as temperature sensors of a nanoscale normal metal strip absorber. The absorber is fed by an antenna via two Superconductor-Insulator-Normal metal (SIN) tunnel junctions, fabricated at both ends of the absorber. Incoming photons excite electrons, heating the whole electron system. The incoming RF power is determined by measuring the tunneling current through the SIN junctions. Since electrons at highest energy levels escape the absorber through the tunnel junctions, it cau

In recent times, researchers have found potential in using liquid metals in broad-spectrum applications such as processing ceramics, stretchable electronics, 3D printing, coolant technology, energy storage, and many others. Gallium and its alloys are preferred over conventional mercury in all these applications because of its low melting point, high boiling point, and non-toxicity. Given these exciting applications, there is a need to understand the flow behavior of low melting metals in the liquid state, especially at small length scales. The wetting of gallium on metal thin solid films is no
