The present research activity has been focused on surface modifications of polymers in order to enhance their flame retardancy and gas barrier properties. The work has been split into two different topics: i) fabric flame retardancy and ii) gas barrier coatings for packaging applications. Within the first topic different strategies have been applied in order to enhance the flame retardancy of synthetic poly(ethyleneterephthalate) fibres and their blends with cotton. The first strategy deals with the single step nanoparticle adsorption in a finishing-like process. In order to enhance the surf

Metal oxide nanolaminate films are potential high temperature solid lubricants due to their ability to exhibit significant plasticity when grain size is reduced to the nanometer scale, and defective growth structure is achieved by condensation of oxygen vacancies to form intrinsic stacking faults. This is in contrast to conventional microcrystalline and single crystal oxides that exhibit brittle fracture during loading in a sliding contact. Abstract:

<p>In this report a model analysis is presented for three different nanostructured layers: silicon nanotips (SiNTs), gold nanosandwiches and Split Ring Resonators (SRR). The last two materials are metamaterials and both may show a negative refraction index. Experimental data are obtained for every sample using a variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometer. For the gold nanosandwiches, also an infrared ellipsometric measurement is done. For complex layers like these, advanced modeling is necessary. Abstract:
Mannan is a polymannose isolated from the cell wall of Saccaromyces cerevisiae and has strong binding affinity to mannose receptors on antigen presenting cells (APCs), such as dendritic cells and macrophages. Mannan-functionalized nanomaterials or nanostructures are thus of high interests in studying immune responses towards fungi. In this work, we investigated the fabrication of mannan-coated silver nanostructures using a laser-deposition technique. Specifically, two different starting materials were applied for laser-deposition. One is a mixture solution of AgNO3 and mannan, and the other on

Abstract:
A challenge exists for understanding the origin of color for structurally colored, 3-dimensional bioorganic nanostructures, such as the scales of butterflies, beetles, and moths. Complex, hierarchical structures found within such scales create the overall scale appearance. The controlled alteration of color through material deposition and the addition of new optical functionalities to such structures are other areas of scientific interest. This dissertation addresses these challenges with a first-of-its-kind, systematic isolation (deconstruction) of scale component nanostructures, followed by

Abstract:
The prototypical exciton model of two interacting Dirac particles in graphene was analysed by Sabio et al, Phys. Rev. B 81, 045428 (2010), and it was found that in one of the electron-hole scattering channels the total kinetic energy vanishes, resulting in a singular behaviour. We show that this singularity can be removed by extending the quasiparticle dispersion, thus breaking the symmetry between upper and lower Dirac cones. The dynamics of an electron-electron pair are then mapped onto that of a single particle with negative mass and anisotropic dispersion. We show that the interplay betwee
