Full textNanoscale pattern formation in reactive adsorbates on single crystal surfaces is investigated theoretically. Because on such small scales fluctuations become important, a mesoscopic theory for the adsorbate coverage is developed, which aims at providing a link between microscopic lattice models and reaction-diffusion equations. It describes the dynamics for the locally averaged adsorbate coverages in a continuum model taking into account internal fluctuations. This approach is applied to several systems, where patterns on scales smaller than the characteristic diffusion length, which typically lies in the micrometer range, can be formed. As has been observed e.g. in recent experiments with fast scanning tunneling microscopy, a variety of nanoscale patterns can result from the presence of attractive adsorbate-adsorbate interactions. Here, at first a single species of such an adsorbate is considered. In the absence of nonequilibrium reactions, strong enough attractive lateral interactions can induce a first-order phase transition in the adsorbate coverage. The mesoscopic evolution equation is applied to model the kinetics of this phase transition. If additionally a nonequilibrium reaction is present, stationary spatially periodic microstructures may arise as a result of the competition of the attractive lateral interactions and the reactions. The conditions for their appearance and their properties are investigated in detail, e.g. alternating lateral interactions are discussed and the influence of global coupling through the gas phase is analyzed. Furthermore, it is shown that they are not destroyed by relatively strong internal fluctuations. In the next step, a hypothetical model for two different reactive adsorbate species is investigated, where a similar mechanism leads to the formation of nanoscale traveling and standing waves. In the presence of relatively strong internal fluctuations these waves break up and a complex dynamics of interacting wave fragments is observed. In the last example, it is shown in the analysis of a simple model that self-organized nonequilibrium microreactors with submicrometer sizes may spontaneously develop in a single reactive adsorbate species without attractive lateral interactions. They represent localized structures resulting from the interplay between reaction, diffusion and an adsorbate-induced structural transformation of the surface.

Full textIn this work spectroscopic and structural investigations were performed on chiral and achiral supramolecular nanoarchitectures of J-aggregates of achiral cyanine dyes. Tetrachlorobenzimidacarbocyanine dyes with different 1,1´-Dialkyl- and 3,3´-Bis-acidoalkyl- substituents were used as model systems. To characterize these nanoarchitectures static spectroscopic methods - UV/vis-spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD)- and fluorescence-spectroscopy -, x-ray crystal structure analysis, as well as cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) were used. The delicate balance of intermolecular forces, like hydrophobic interaction, dispersion forces, as well as hydrogen bonds, leads by J-aggregation of structural similar achiral chromophores to "chiral" superhelices and achiral nanoscopic ribbons. By combination of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of surfactants with the unique properties of J-aggregates nanotubules and vesicles are built. These nanostructures are hopeful candidates for artificial antenna and light harvesting systems.

Full textThe main aim of this work was the development of a DNA-based nanostructure. The universal four-letter code of DNA allows addressing bonds at the molecular level. The chemical and physical property of DNA makes this macromolecule an ideal candidate as a construction element for nanostructures. The aim of this work was to span a DNA strand between two fixed points. For this purpose it was necessary to develop a method which makes it possible to deposit functional molecules as anchoring elements with highly spatial resolution on a surface. These molecules should be immobilized on the lower micrometer scale to meet the requirements of the desired nanostructure. The method that has been developed for this task, which enables to deposit functional molecules, uses the binding pair biotin-neutravidin. Using the tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM), which can be uses like a pen, it was possible to deposit neutravidin on the lower micrometer scale. This neutravidin molecule is the linking element between the biotinylated glass surface and the actual address molecule. The thus generated neutravidin field could then be functionalized with a biotinylated molecule by incubation. The method has been published as sequential spotting method because it enables a sequential functionalization of neutravidin after it has been deposited. It was so possible to build up a multi-component array. The limitation of being able to deposit only one single substance with an AFM has been circumvented. It also was necessary to create anchor elements in order to immobilize the DNA at defined positions. The processing of the DNA was carried out using molecular biological methods and aimed at generating a DNA strand, which at both ends has a complementary sequence for binding to the surface bound anchor elements. The defined structure is a result of the geometry of the fixed points, generated by the AFM. Using fluorescence microscopy, the constructed DNA nanostructure was detected. The proof of the interaction of DNA-binding molecules with the DNA structure was carried out by the binding of PNA (peptide nucleic acid), which is capable of binding to double stranded DNA. The PNA and its DNA-interaction is a functional building block in the nanometer scale and can be regarded as a promising nanostructure.

Full textHybrid solar cells are built from ZnO layers and ZnO nanostructures and Poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b'']dithiophene)-alt-4,7(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT). The growth of the ZnO layers and nanostructures is performed with pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on sapphire substrates. The samples exhibit a c-axis orientation. The polarity of a ZnO layer determines the morphology of subsequently grown ZnO nanostructures. One can control the morphology between ZnO nanorods on an O-terminated layer and nanowalls on a Zn-terminated layer. Studies with convergent electron beam diffraction reveals that the ZnO nanostructures are always Zn-terminated. The interface between ZnO and PCPDTBT is studied with photoelectron spectroscopy and shows a vacuum level alignment between both materials. In principle, the interface is suitable for photovoltaic activity, however, the achieved power conversion efficiencies are very low. This is due to a low exciton dissociation efficiency, which can be improved by the use of sol-gel ZnO, small organic molecules, and a lower conductivity of the PLD ZnO. Nevertheless, the maximum power conversion efficiency amounts to 0.21 %, only.
