ESR Spectroscopy has been used to study conformational interconversion and addivity relationships in a number of series of naphthalene derivatives. Oscillation of the alkyl rings in 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexahydropyrene ions, and the ions of the related 5, 6 and 7 membered ring compounds has been studied. The temperature dependance of the ESR spectra have been used to assign the coupling constants. The aromatic ring coupling constants in the asymmetric compounds have been assigned on the basis of an additivity relationship. In the first part, to understand the relation between the solid-state phase structures and the photophysical properties of Poly (2,3-diphenyl-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (DP-PPV) derivatives, three DP-PPV derivatives, P1-P3 were designed, synthesized via Gilch polymerization and characterized. Among the 13C chemical shifts, the C(2) of this series compound is the most sensitive to the variation in the nature of substituent on the phenyl ring.
