Abstract:

ABSTRACTThis article investigates the discourse coherence of school-aged children with specific language impairment (SLI). The following dimensions of discourse are analyzed: topic maintenance, event sequencing, explicitness (including referencing), conjunctive cohesion, and fluency. The personal narratives of the children in the experimental group were compared with those produced by two groups of children with normal language development, one group matched by chronological age and the other matched by language level. The narratives of the children with SLI were significantly impaired compared with both control groups with respect to all five dimensions of narration, although impairment was far more pronounced for topic maintenance, event sequencing, and implicitness than it was for conjunctive cohesion or fluency. The former serious impairments place a heavy burden on listeners. Theoretical and clinical implications of the results are discussed.

Abstract:
The science fiction form adopted by Santiago Páez, in "Uriel" (2006), and Giaconda Belli, in Waslala (1996), owes the rudiments of its literary structure to early colonial narratives of New World encounter. Such science fiction not only contains strong traces of what Mary Louise Pratt has famously called the “rhetoric of discovery,” but also employs tropes directly or indirectly inherited from colonial travel narratives. However, Páez and Belli associate this science fiction form with a legacy of United States neo-imperialism, in which colonial narratives have been invoked and repeated triumphantly in the construction of national imaginaries. In Central and South America, conversely, the novela de la selva—the other clear structural source for Páez and Belli, and a literary form equally indebted to colonial narratives of New World encounter—remains conscious of its enunciation as a postcolonial form critical of its colonial narrative sources. While the novela de la selva, then, shares a literary taproot with sci-fi narratives of futuristic exploration, Páez and Belli utilize the latter to renovate and reactivate the former’s critique of an imperialist legacy by exploiting tensions that arise between these two disparate literary forms whose central tropes so often coincide. I argue that by adapting the ecologically aware New World imaginary peculiar to the novela de la selva, in which positivist ambitions of national expansion are checked by a forest that nevertheless becomes part of a national imaginary, Páez and Belli fundamentally alter the New World imaginary that underwrites high science fiction narratives of exploration and expansion.

It has often been said that Georges Bataille, in his fictional work, experimented with notions such as excess, loss and heterogeneity, notions which are at the core of his philosophical work. A closer look at two of his main narratives, Histoire de l'oeil (1928) and Le Bleu du ciel (1935), allows us to see parallels and repetitive structures that would hint at another tendency at work in his writing: a tendency towards homogenization of the narrative components concerned, in sharp contrast to the forces of heterogeneity.

Abstract:
In the last 30 years women have been making significant inroads into Nepal's public sphere, troubling long-held normative assumptions about women's place in modern Nepal. In this article I examine the discursive strategies that working-class Nepali women employ to justify and legitimate their presence in Nepal's urban public spaces and simultaneously claim an identity as a modern Nepali woman. Drawing on an ethnographic case study of one group of publicly visible women, female trekking guides, I provide a close analysis of how spatial language is leveraged by both state actors and informants to articulate multiple, sometimes conflicting, messages about Nepali women's “place” in contemporary society. In particular, I focus on the use of spatial metaphors, showing how informants use terms such as inside, outside, forward, and backward to locate themselves within narratives of modernity, development, and national progress. I conclude by showing that unlike women in other examples from the global South, who have framed their emergent presence in the public sphere as an extension of a traditionally feminine and domestic role, informants in the present case study appropriate a masculine language of overt publicness and mobility to justify their visibility. In so doing, informants author themselves as agents of modernity rather than objects of the state's development efforts.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This work treats about Brazilian Amazonian mixed people, not as mixed-blood by culturally mixed from several historical roots. As an hybrid culture, "Caboclo" people, as they are named in the Amazonian flood plain, create their own representation about themselves and the others, in through narrative images. The "Coboclo" narratives, as a symbolical work of the culture, is a daily and day full activity, and seems to be a real conceptual, but also practical, way to be able to self explain and maintain a problematic "way of life", a "Coboclo"-ness. The field work has been done in several villages of the Pará State, Northern Brazil

Currently the miner is a stigmatized figure by certain segments of Roraimas society, however he is historically important for being part of their culture and identity. Thinking about this issue, this paper studies the construction of identity in the mining of Tepequém. It thus explores the imaginary around the El Dorado and its relation with Roraima; it also discusses individual and collective memory from the life stories of the miners, and then analyzes their identity from the imaginary of the mining, mainly from the corrutela, the prostitute, the drink and the dream of finding a stone that would change their lives.

This Master’s Dissertation aims to present how the four participants to this investigation, fronterizos from the Aceguá city BR/UY constitute their identities performatively through the portuñol, paying attention to this language crossings in the daily life of them each one. The investigation is based on the Undisciplined Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2006), approaching the language as a social practice and, this way, for study it is necessary to reflect about the society and the culture of which is a part. Moreover, the discursive practices are not seen as neutral, so, they start from language ideology (SILVERSTEIN, 1979), (WOOLARD, 1998), (IRVINE and GAL, 2000), (KROSKRITY, 2004), (MOITA LOPES, 2013) that, consequently, are permeated by power relations (BLOMMAERT, 2014). The methodology was from narratives, understanding them how a process closely linked to the identity construction (SANTOS, 2013) and the analysis were done through the analytical clues proposed by Wortham (2001). The research emphasize how the frontier is a mobility space in several aspects and that the portuñol, although considered a lesser prestige language by some participants, is in frontier everyday life, often becoming a linguistic transgression when it crosses the limits imposed by certain linguistic ideologies.

Abstract:
This study aims at understanding psychological issues implemented in self-writing with Attachment Theory and Pschoanalysis. We recall the historical context and the emergence of philosophical subjectivity and sensitivity reported with rationality, from the perspective of Michel Foucault. The binding process, sublimation capacity underpinned by narcissistic investments and countenance needs are highlighted in literary autobiographies. We show that subjectivation arouses in the early interrelations and is continuing throughout life. The concept of "narrative identity" introduced by Paul Ricoeur connects the ontological and narratological perspectives. Recent propositions made to patients in palliative care and oncology services, leads us to question the value of writing. We report two experiments proposed to teenagers : writing workshops at the time of hospitalization in the Institut Curie in Paris and writing testimony in hospital of Nantes. We perform an analysis in the context of their socio-ethical development : Art Therapy, Narrative Medicine, Philosophy of care and supportive care. We question their validity and legitimacy. We hope to contribute to the debate on assessment requirements. Both intrasubjective and interpersonal, writing can metabolize experience. It is however necessary to preserve the singularity and psychological conflictuality to which psychoanalysis is able to answer

Tracks opened by dimensions of postcolonial studies and cultural studies served as a starting point against the power of discourse, analyzing practices of representation that impose a “regime of truth” and mark cultural difference by signifying "the racialized 'Other' in Western popular culture" (HALL, 2016). While searching for what emerges when the „Other‟ represents his/herself from their own positionality and epistemic perspectives of the South, this work intentionally draws on references that produce knowledge and theories „otherwise‟, decentering Global North‟s instrumental rationalism. Approaching socialized cultures ruled by "regimes of orality" (ANTONACCI, 2016) requires getting close to multifaceted ways of being, living and knowing manifested in cognitive and communicational practices. It requires apprehending distinctions, and considering that the unforeseen of encounters / confrontations in the so-called New World have resulted in a plurality of Afrodiasporic cultures. As paradigms are being redefined, "musicosmoving afroepistemes" are being surveyed, confronting the concept of literacy and its lack of consideration for the senses. The term coined in this research pluralizes epistemes from a sensory-corporeal-reason standpoint, where the rhythm allows for alignment with the time of the Cosmos, updating and actualizing ideas that do not constitute themselves individually, but as a whole, as performances – “vital acts of transfers" (TAYLOR, 2013) – as seen in cinematographies I have used in this work

Abstract:
The politics of a multilayered text like The Subhedar’s Son does not lie in its strong statement of ideological issues but in its silences and its emotional representations. Dinkar Shankar Sawarkar, the author of The Subhedar’s Son, deliberately connected Christian morality with specific social groups, according them relative political significance, while disregarding others as morally and spiritually bankrupt. This chapter discusses the various narrative strategies employed by Sawakar in the Marathi novel. It explores how The Subhedar’s Son is simultaneously a Christian narrative and a Brahmin narrative that makes an important case for the Brahmin-Christian contribution to vernacular nativism and nationalism, against colonialism. The chapter describes how the novel stages religious conversion to Christianity as a modern and individualist Brahmin and upper-caste decision, the analysis of which cannot be afforded within structural explorations, but personal motivations and life stories.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This policy note outlines core findings from a case study of the experiences of approximately 200 Rwandans as they left prison or community service camp and returned to their communities. Specifically, it relies upon interviews with each of these individuals before, 6 months after, and again 1 year after their release—as well as interviews with over 100 community members. Although reentry and reintegration are multifaceted processes, this policy note focuses on identity, rituals, and narratives with an emphasis on initial reentry, which sets the stage for broader reintegration. In doing so, the note highlights insights that are relevant to reentry and reintegration following not only genocide but also mass violence, war, insurgency, violent extremism, and other forms of political violence. It simultaneously recognizes, however, that the case of Rwanda has exceptional elements and addresses these elements throughout.

Abstract:
Blue Mountain is a 35-minute work for two actors and orchestra. It was commissioned by the Ultima Festival, and premiered in 2014 by the Danish National Chamber Orchestra. The Ultima festival challenged me – being both a composer and writer – to make something where I wrote both text and music. Interestingly, I hadn’t really thought of that before, writing text to my own music – or music to my own text. This is a very common thing in popular music, the songwriter. But in the lied, the orchestral piece or indeed in opera, there is a strict division of labour between composer and writer. There are exceptions, most famously Wagner, who did libretto, music and staging for his operas. And 20th century composers like Olivier Messiaen, who wrote his own poems for his music – or Luciano Berio, who made a collage of such detail that it the text arguably became his own in Sinfonia. But this relationship is often a convoluted one, not often discussed in the tradition of musical analysis where text tend to be taken as a given, not subjected to the same rigorous scrutiny that is often the case with music. This exposition is an attempt to unfold this process of composing with both words and music. A key challenge has been to make the text an intrinsic part of the performance situation, and the music something more than mere accompaniment to narration. To render the words meaningless without the music and vice versa. So the question that emerged was how music and words can be not only equal partners, but also yield a new species of music/text? A second questions follows en suite, and that is what challenges the conflation of different roles – the writer and the composer – presents? I will try to address these questions through a discussion of the methods applied in Blue Mountain, the results they have yielded, and the challenges this work has posed.
